Apache War Feather

Rate this book
1882 New Mexico, and the southwest frontier was about to burst into flames in more ways than one. Lieutenant Troy Quadrangle of the United States Sixth Cavalry was sent with a detail to save and advise settlers that a war party of Mescalero Apaches were on the rampage led by Hatchet Face who was used to freedom and had never been restricted to a reservation. He not only was a determined Apache but wore a single feather in his head band that gave him confidence, for it was assumed to hold special powers that could bring nothing but victory. As if to promote this the rampage was bigger than thought and eventually most of the Sixth Cavalry was sent from Fort Driscoll by Colonel Morton, headed by Captain Joe Knatchbull and Lieutenant Quadrangle with seasoned scout Jebediah Hoskins.

Another more peaceable Apache was the brother of Hatchet Face, by the name of Stone Face. He decided to join his brother and combine tribes at the behest of his Shaman, Stolen Bonnet. As if that wasn't enough to enlarge the opposition, a gang of desperate Comancheros, mixed half white and half Comanche, headed by Gringo Goncalves, were involved in the biggest gold bar robbery in Mexico and were on their way back to New Mexico and intended to join up with Hatchet Face.

In addition to this the famous Geronimo was also on the run, from a reservation, and being chased by General George Crook with Cavalry from Fort Apache.

And then to culminate things was the mysterious and controversial Indian lover, Senator William Mackinnon.
