Naofumi has cleared his name, mostly, which means it's time to focus on getting stronger. An event at a nearby island chain promises a faster way to level up, so the queen sends him and the other three Heroes there to take advantage of it. But getting stronger is going to be far easier than becoming a team with the other three Heroes.

Don't skip the prologue. Even though it mostly exists as a recap to catch people up if they haven't read the previous books (or haven't read them lately) there's some great lines sprinkled in. I still find it really funny Raphtalia keeps trying to get through to Naofumi "Don't you find ME a good enough reason to stay?" without quite saying it, but he's too dense. He just can't help remembering little things like people trying to burn him alive

The reason I wanted to get back to my world was simple enough: I hated this place.
They’d framed me for crimes, forced me to fight when I didn’t want to, and the knights that were supposed to be on my side tried to set me on fire. Who would want to stay in a place like this?

Or this little gem:

The book I’d been reading at the library, The Records of the Four Holy Weapons, had given terse descriptions of their character.
The Sword Hero was attractive and active, the Spear Hero was loyal, and the Bow Hero was a warrior for justice.
All that was well and fine for the sake of a story, but in reality the whole lot of them were pretty miserable to be around.

I've actually really missed the mechanics discussions from the first book, so I was happy to see an extended argument about how the systems of this world actually work. Because the answer is hilarious---Naofumi, the non-gamer, is getting completely different answers from Ren, Itsuki, and Motoyasu. All three of them really believe their methods work, and are the One True Upgrade Path, but they're all completely different. (Of course they're fighting about why everyone is lying to each other.)

So Naofumi, who had to do everything manually, decides to experiment. And finds THEY ALL WORK. And that leads him to understand some additional and very important differences between this world and the games the other three used to play. And why the Legendary weapons really are special in more ways than just allowing for a fully unlocked skill tree.

I also really liked that Naofumi is trying to think back on his own experience shortly after arriving, before everything went bad. How he realizes that he, too, had once had more options---and that closing himself off from others, from the world, is a large part of what's limiting him now. It's a rare bit of emotional honesty for him. And now I'm really curious to see what unique way his upgrades might have taken, even though he's unlikely to ever recover that specific method.

And you really have to hand it to the weapon shop owner. Naofumi's new discoveries basically mean he can get the benefit of that guy's equipment for himself without buying it, but since Naofumi has spent so long building a good relationship with him, he lets Naofumi have the run of the place.

I love the fact that Naofumi has an iron constitution. This came up before, with Raphtalia getting motion sickness that he didn't feel, but it comes up again with an immunity to getting seasick. It's those little ties between his actual personality and the class he ended up with that I find neat. This also applies to the "grapes" he was enjoying at the bar. I can only imagine the shield's poison resistance up skills were helping there . . . that was one of my favorite scenes in the book. I would be interested to learn if his resistance is getting passed to Raphtalia or if demihumans (or her in particular) just have a very high alcohol tolerance.

It's also nice that Naofumi's hard manual labor wasn't entirely wasted. For example, he knows how to read. The other Heroes, because their weapons translate the spoken languages, never bothered. They could learn magic instantaneously, so why bother doing it the long way? The fact that it left them less capable in the long run didn't even occur to them, because their whole focus has been on combat skills (and once again Naofumi is showing them up simply by virtue of having a greater range of skills and experience outside of combat to help).

This book is a significant step up from the previous four in several ways. Naofumi is actually making an effort to get along with other people outside Filo and Raphtalia, the worldbuilding continues to expand, some earlier mysteries gain new layers, and the writing has smoothed out. I'm really hoping that this series eventually gets an anime. I rate this book Recommended.

This volume is the most boring of all I have read, well I don't really like that the heroe of the shield have to treat with the others heroes. The most interesting thing that happen in this volume is the new character that join the shield's party.

not quite as good as some of the previous volumes but still enjoyable. I liked that some things were revealed and some other mysteries brought forth to thickn the plot a bit...still a really fun series deserves 4 stars

Volume 5 of Rising of the Shield Hero begins a new story arc after Volume 4 but takes things slowly. Now that Naofumi is no longer a wanted criminal, he can start getting proper support in being a hero. The government and other heroes (albeit reluctantly) are now willing to help him. That takes him to the Cal Mira islands, where a special event allows people to level up quickly. The anime watchers, the last 4 episodes of season 1 cover the events of this book. And the episodes were in a bit of a weird spot, narratively speaking.

The anime episodes that covered Volume 4 gave that story arc a different ending. And it felt like a real ending; a true season finale. Especially with the changes they made to the story compared to the books. And then it just kept going with a few more episodes. Most light novel adaptations cover three to four books, so it was surprising that Shield Hero season one covered five. The tone and pacing also felt a little off. After Volume 4 was covered over 8 episodes, we are back to a whole book being covered in just 4 episodes like at the beginning of the season. Some odd choices, but maybe they did not know if they were getting renewed until later or some other real-world factor.

Regarding Volume 5 itself, this was another solid entry in the Shield Hero series. It is a bit more light-hearted and low stakes than the previous two entries. There is some major action at the end, but most of the book has Naofumi and co. returning to a sense of normalcy and staying there, at least for a short time. It is nice to have a series that is not high stakes all the time.

The slower pacing provides more time for world-building, character development, and other changes not directly related to advancing the plot. It becomes even more apparent here what advantages Naofumi has developed over the other heroes, despite doing things “wrong” from their point of view. And now that he can talk to people without fear of being arrested, gathering more information on the world state and the Waves is easier. The next story arc does start to come into play towards the end of this book, but it is more setting things up for the next novel than truly kicking things off. The overall different tone may turn some readers off, but the next book will likely get back to the action.

This volume of Shield Hero serves as a transition chapter mostly about leveling up and the heroes banding together (somewhat). It's kind of an infuriating chapter outside of the leveling, as we've come off of a huge victory and yet we have to deal with these other petty heroes and their attitude towards Naofumi.

Really, not a ton happens this chapter. Character interactions aren't that illuminating or entertaining. Lots of the focus is spent on explaining levels, and finding new shields that we'll never hear much about Naofumi using if past and present volumes are any indication. We do get some new characters, but even their development is hampered by them just not inserting themselves into the plot much.

I heard later volumes had typos, and this particular volume had quite a few. Really inexcusable ones too, like since instead of sense, the instead of a.

This series on rewrite feels night and day different, so much got added and most of my major complaints have been getting addressed. This is the moment in the original series where everything started to slow down and get dull/repetitive, here they were like lets add 2 new characters and change what was the major part of the story to a minor one and have the new major one revolve around these 2 new characters.

This is one of the better books in the series. I was feeling a bit down on the sheild hero books after the last volume, figured I might drop the series. But this one has definitely reignited my interest.

This book introduces a lot of new mechanics and feels quite different from the previous 4, in a good way. It's the closest to the 1st book we've had so far, and it definitely reignited my interest in the series. Will definitely go for book 6

I enjoyed this story. I liked the new characters. I enjoyed the extra story added at the end. It was a fun read. I liked how Naofumi won the battle and drove them away this time. Also he didn't have to pull out the shields that hurt him. I wonder what the next book holds.

Great Continuation of the series

Watching the anime has inspired me to read the LN. It provides a lot more on the character's motivations. A good read but you can still tell something was lost in the translation to English.

Hmm...okay, at this point, I feel like there's not a lot for me to say anymore. So let's just cut to the chase:

First of all, the translation is absolute shit. There were more grammatical and spelling errors in this one than any of its prequels. Normally, I'll just brush it off, but when it happens in serious and tense situations, it kind of takes you out of the scene. That just infuriates me. Was this even an official translated version?

Second of all, it becomes quite exhausting and, frankly, old that the other three heroes have almost no character growth at all. You would think that after being majorly injured in three separate events, they would come to terms with the fact that they will most likely die if they don't get their act together this time. At this point, they've just become one-dimensional figures that doesn't serve the story other than to show the contrast with Naofumi and make him look good—which is redundant, because even without them Naofumi is doing a fine job at that himself.

Now, let's get to the parts that I do like:

1.) I love the storyline of this volume. Its easy-going, chilled atmosphere—which is a huge contrast from the previous book—allows us to rest from all the thing that's been going on recently. It has also allowed Naofumi and his party to grow significantly, in terms of strength—which I think is a long time coming. Being set in a different area, away from Melromarc, allows Naofumi and his friends to relax a bit more, because most people don't have prejudice about him here. It definitely feels a bit like a vacation—albeit not without some tense moments later on.

2.) L'arc and Therese are, by far, my favourite characters in the series. They are way more complex than most characters—probably even more so than Naofumi—and have a great dynamic in their relationship. You don't know 100% what goes on between them and/or what kind of people they are. Therese, in particular, attracts me because she is much stronger and more feisty than her appearance seems to portray. Her behaviour towards L'arc sets the tone of their friendship. L'arc, on the other hand, is pretty easy-going and oblivious, but possibly with something darker underneath. It's such a breath of fresh air after a barrage of one-dimensional characters that have appeared so far.

3.) Naofumi is starting to actually look and feel stronger than before–creating a huge power gap with the other heroes. Before, it seems almost as if we just HAVE to believe that he was unbelievably strong amongst his peers—although we clearly saw how much he was struggling just to survive. Now, it definitely feels that way too—thanks to the rapid leveling that should've happened a long time ago. Raphthalia and Filo got stronger too, of course, but that's no surprise, since they've always been portrayed as being incredibly strong—especially Filo.

All in all, I think the story flowed very nicely this time. There were more showing than telling, in terms of letting the story unfold, and we can see Naofumi bond with some new people. It's refreshing to see that he's starting to want to trust more people. Also, the mystery of the wave comes back to remind us that it's not solved yet. So I'm curious what's going to happen next.

Well, following the events of Vol 4, it’s time to get stronger for the next wave. To do so, they decide to head to the Cal Mira islands, at the behest of the Queen. There’s a phenomena occurring where you receive more experience than usual after defeating monsters, so adventurers come from all over to take part and grow stronger. After the events of Volume 4, where Naofumi and his party narrowly escaped defeat at the hands of Glass, he knows he and his people need to be stronger.

Prior to going to the islands, the heroes have a meeting in order to exchange information, because Naofumi is woefully uninformed due to him not having played similar games the other heroes did back in their worlds. This exchange of information is tatined because none of them trusts each other, and the other three believe that Naofumi is “cheating” somehow to be as strong as he is. Because a shielder can’t be stronger than attack based in their eyes. Of course, he couldn’t just have worked harder than they did. The meeting divolves in chaos and everyone goes on their way to prepare to head to the island to level up.

On his way to the islands, he meets two new people: Therese and L’Arc Berg. These two adventures are all but equal to Naofumi and his party in terms of strength, so they join up with Naofumi on their quest to the Cal Mira islands. Training ensues and Naofumi and his party grows much stronger than before, which works out, because another Wave of destruction is upon them, so they’ll need all the strength they can get.

I won’t go into detail about how the Wave is handled or what comes after, but just know, things get crazy in this Volume, and it sets up some major questions going forward. I’m interested to see how everything unfolds!

This was a really enjoyable volume. It comes off almost as a fun sidequest of sorts, but has plenty of important stuff going on beforehand and then leading up to the climax. It's a nice change of pace from what came before while expanding the world even further. The new characters are fun as well.

I already know much of what happened, having watched season 1 of the anime, but it makes me curious all over again what the deeper mysteries are about the Waves.

There are a few bits that seem a little slow, but I think that's just natural after how tense things got leading up until this point. It's natural to have a little bit of a breather.

My one complaint is the bonus story. Don't read it. It's literal garbage. I mean, it's nice to know Naofumi was actually going to the hot springs to treat his curse, as the main story keeps mentioning he needs to go but I don't think it ever specified he did it. The rest of the bonus story, however... It reduces all the male characters to pervs as they try to spy on the females. The one exception is Naofumi, but then he even gets a scummy line about it right at the end. The ending also plays off as more of a humorous thing than as them sexually harassing the females.

Like, I get it, fan service is a huge thing in Japanese media and you just have to live with that if you watch anime, but that entire bonus story just felt disgusting.

Other than the disgusting bonus story, this is a great volume and I can't wait to see where the story goes next.

There were quite a few typos in this volume, though. I understand the occasional typo across an entire series, but it was odd how many were in this book alone. The others haven't had this many typos.

Nesse mundo, a raridade do equipamento é tudo. Depois disso é dinheiro... Se você usar a mesma arma por uma longa quantia de tempo, ela vai ficar mais forte. E quando uma arma se torna obsoleta, você pode converter essa proficiência em energia e transferir ela. Guardar energia libera poderes extremos. Isso é muito importante... O oposto do Ódio também é a Apatia..."

Ahh what can I say, I love the shield hero series. Ever since I had completed the anime back in the beginning of September sometime, I had started reading the light novels. In fact I finished book one on the same day I finished the first season of the anime. I love Naofumi, the type of person he is more than the whole shield hero thing. This book is the last of the installation which has been adapted into the anime in season 1. It ends at the same point, post the battle of Cal Mira. I especially liked the extra-chapter which had Naofumi thinking that he might actually open up and have some fun with a man whom he now considers his friend. With everything that he had to go through to reach this point, just seeing those words where such a future is being imagine by him was enough to make me happy.

Back to the review though, book 5 encompassed the trip to Cal Mira and the activation event which was the reason for the trip. A lot had happened and now Naofumi had finally decided to give the other hero's a chance to get along with him. Things were rocky but at the same.time the relationships between the four has improved a lot. New characters, L'Arc and Theresia had also been introduced here. They ended up playing very important roles towards the end.

I'm excited for all the things that's coming up for my favourite party members in the next book 🤍

So like this series, a super-fast read. I almost knocked a star off because of all the world mechanics and what not then realized I'm rating it for myself and I like that sort of thing. So seeing how to level up equipment and see all the new shields (albeit briefly) that show up was nice. The accusations of lying did drag on for a smidge longer than necessary, but I suppose it does show that while none of the other heroes ever really liked or trusted Naofumi that they don't really like and trust one another either. So rather than being Four Heroes, there are 4 Heroes. Trying to change that in this volume was a start. Considering how many books are in the series I can't say I'm surprised at the outcome so far.

We are also introduced to some new characters L'arc & Therese. I wanted to like them. And while I don't hate them I haven't actually managed to like them thus far. I am sure we haven't seen the last of them so maybe things will change.

All in all, I'm still digging Shield Hero.

First off I must say that I really love this series. With my transition from the anime to the light novels I have felt a bit disappointed... The story itself isn't bad, it's great actually, but One Peace Books' translation of the LN is making it harder for me to justify reading more. Simple things such as misspellings or misuses of words is getting really annoying and it makes me ponder as to whether or not they proofread this before shipping it out. Perhaps I'm a bit spoiled by Yen Press and their magnificent translation of the SAO LNs, but the issue isn't even with the translation.

Regardless, most of this volume is pretty filler with the introduction of two new characters who may play a bigger role in future volumes, L'Arc and Therese. I think they're fine characters and I'm curious to learn more about them in the future; however, their introduction isn't the best and I wish they were given a bit more development to make their betrayal a bit more impactful.

Needless to say, it's okay.

Okay, this book rounds out the first season of the Anime. I'm actually surprised they managed to fit 5 books into one season while leaving out so little. Sure, they're light novels that probably aren't much more than 50-60k words each, but still, that's a lot of material to cover. The Anime was pretty faithful to the books. Book two had quite a bit that didn't make it into the show, but the rest of the books up to this point only had small things here and there skipped or glossed over.

And the lazy localization continues. I mean, it would literally take me like 3-4 hours for each of these books to proofread them. They couldn't pay someone to do 3-4 hours of proof reading? Really?

A 'training' arc volume, as our hero finally gets much needed support and we get to catch up with the other heroes summoned alongside him, as disappointing as they are.

New surprise antagonists get introduced this volume as well, but their motives remain as mysterious as ever.

Unfortunately, this volume suffers much more worse to the subpar translation, due to the number of characters talking with indeterminate patterns, making it nearly impossible to differentiate the dialogue being spoke at many times. Very disappointing translation quality.

Naofumi finally catches a break!

After getting his name cleared from the Myne "incident" he can focus on catching up with the other heroes by leveling up.

The first half feels like a fresh breeze with new characters. The three Heroes are still the same naive side characters as they were from the beginning.

The plot thickens as the latter parts seem to expand the mysteries of the previous character Glass, encouraging the Shield Hero to grow further as a Hero.

The next volumes may lead readers to something bigger.

Here we go! Fifth entry in the series. A lot of the attention of this entry goes to the levelingup of the characters. The interactions with the rest of the sacred heroes are terrible most of the time. But now that I have finished it, I can say that the light tone and continuous misunderstanding keep the mood high during the read, and probably are the reason why regularly I go back to this series.

Recommended only to those who already are committed to the series and are looking for some time off from the buzz of the world.

A fun, quick and easy read. After the big showdown with the priest in the previous volume this one has a completely different pace and feel to it.
That is not to say that this one is boring, there is a lot of new information and we get to meet some new characters on both sides of the conflict the only thing that stopped me from giving it 5 stars is that the beginning feels a little bit like an information dump but that feeling quickly disappears when the story moves on.

This volume starts some new story threads and introduces some new characters. There were some really interesting moments in this one but there were also some boring bits in the early portion. L'arc is a fun character and Glass makes a return in which some new details are revealed. The bonus chapter was a bit on the weak side but the action throughout was solid.
