The world of running is completely alien to Libby Sarjeant and her friend Fran Wolfe, but when Libby’s son Adam and Fran’s stepdaughter Sophie join the Nethergate Harriers, they have to take an interest. And when one of the runners goes missing in the middle of the Nethergate 5K, they take more than an interest! It’s not long before a body is found – and Libby and Fran are caught up in another investigation…
The seventeenth instalment in the hugely popular Libby Sarjeant murder mystery series.
I have read and enjoyed all the previous sixteen books in this series - more than once - so I have been looking forward to this latest instalment for quite a while. The waiting was worth it as this book is every bit as good as the rest. Libby and Fran know nothing about running but when Adam and Sophie - their children - join the Nethergate Harriers they feel the need to learn all about it even if they don't want to take it up themselves.
Then one of the runners goes missing during the Nethergate 5K run Libby and Fran's curiosity is rapidly aroused even if they don't want to be involved in yet another murder. Against their better judgement they do become involved because it suddenly seems as if Sophie and Adam might be in danger when another runner goes missing and a body is discovered.
This series includes some marvellous characters - Libby and Fran themselves and their partners Ben and Guy; the much tried DCI Ian Connell; Peter and Harry and the Pink Geranium; Hetty at the Manor and all the characters in the village of Steeple Martin.
The author creates an interesting and believable world peopled with characters you feel you would recognise if you met them. If you want an entertaining read which doesn't pretend to create a realistic picture of crime investigation then do try this series. It really does create a world which you can lose yourself in. I think the books in the series need to be read in the order in which they were published in order to follow the development of the relationships between the characters.
As always, I love this book, really relate to Libby, and want to be best friends with Peter and Harry. However, the more of these I read, the more irritated I am by the character of Fran. One second, she's pushing to get involved and the next, she's snapping at Libby that she needs to back off and leave it to the police. Honestly, I almost wish that she had been written out at some earlier stage in the series, because her fickle, condescending attitude really rubs me up the wrong way! Add in any of Libby's children who go from begging her to help to blaming her for interfering in less than a chapter and I start to wonder if the author is baiting me!
A little less drama in this book. Its still a good read tho. I just think the pace & some of the action wasn't as good as some past books. I still enjoyed it though. Its a bit repetitive about them being told not to get involved tho! You know that both Libby & Fran will always get involved!
The scene is set for a wonderful Saturday in Nethergate to watch runners complete the local 5k run when a runner disappears. Libby with Fran start the search and again tunnels, caves and mad monks intertwine with multiple murders. Great read.
I enjoyed the book but the proof reading really needs to be improved, several words run together e.g. "Fran'sexploits" , also there were several references to that peculiar and non existent article - a toothcomb !!
I find cozy mysteries to be just what I can read at night. No nightmares! Yet, when I pick up the next one in the series, I find I can't leave it alone until I finish it!
Just Finished Murder on the Run by Lesley Cookman, a nice easy read, and I understand why people like them, but for me I find it a little naive and the characters unbelievable.
Another great book in the Libby Sarjeant/ Fran Wolfe series. Kept me guessing right to the end, lots of twists and turns during the book. The same comforting characters were in the book too - Harry, Peter, Ben, Ian, Hetty, Flo, Guy, Adam and Sophie too. The only negative was that the book hadn't been formatted that well with hypens and words running into each other, but that didn't spoil the enjoyment of the book and it was still readable. Really looking forward to the next book, hope we don't have to wait too long!
I like this series of books. This one however was spoilt by the many typing errors. Did no one bother to Spell check it. However despite that the storyline and characters were very good and I did enjoy it.
This is my first foray into the world of Libby Sarjeant and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Dubbed cozy crime genre this book reminded me of a hybrid of Midsomer Murders and Ms Marple mysteries. Libby Sarjeant it seems always finds herself embroiled in local mysteries. When her son and his girlfriend enter a local run, Libby doesn't imagine that it would lead to her being at the centre of yet another crime when one of the runners from the local running group goes missing during the run. She appears to have disappeared into thin air! Libby and her friend Fran desperately try to stay out of the case but the locals all assume they are part of the investigation and very soon they find themselves at the centre of everything whether they want to be or not when the ones they love may now be in danger. A great book to disappear into for a while and lose yourself in the characters and location. While its not necessary to have read the previous books in the series I think I would perhaps at some point like to go back and do that as given the host of characters it would be good just to see how these characters have developed over the series. Thankfully the author has provided a handy character list at the beginning of the book to help identify each character. I liked this book and enjoyed the surprises it threw in along the way. The story flows at just the right pace and Lesley Cookman has done a great job in writing characters with interesting back stories. I particularly liked Fran and her gift! Great book. Definitely worth a read and investing in the series.
I've read all the Libby Sarjeant books. This one was slow and plodding. Too many peripheral characters that contributed little or nothing to the plot. Too much time is spent on Libby and her friend Fran's reluctance to get involved in solving this mystery or being told to stay out of it by police and family. The plot was mostly formulaic and predictable but there was one twist I didn't see coming. I gave it 3 stars because I still like the main characters and hope the next one will pick up the pace.
