Shawn is a traumatized detective who is suffering through PTSD and decides to go back home to recuperate. Unbeknownst to her that will not be as easy as she thinks. The characters are well developed and engaging and the storyline is full of twists and turns to the end.

Get ready for a funny, emotional, action-packed mystery with a sassy lead female with a hilarious inner monologue! Investigator Shawn Angel is suffering form PTSD after almost dying at the hands of a serial killer. Even after months, she’s not ready to go back on active duty – she’s not even capable of sleeping outside of the bathtub (handy gun named Joan by her side) for fear of leaving herself vulnerable to attack – so she takes a little trip to her sister’s house in her hometown to get away for a bit. Reuniting with her ex is a plus, but being stalked by the man who wants her dead is a definite minus.

I absolutely adored this story. It was super fast-paced and fun to read. Like I said before, Shawn’s inner monologue is hilarious, and the random things she comes up with had be cracking up with laughter. But then it was also quite emotional, dealing with a trauma that psychologically scarred this poor woman who had always been so strong. It’s a good message that even the toughest of women are allowed to have moments of weakness. Or maybe that even women with weaknesses can still pick themselves up and be strong. One of those two. There doesn’t have to be an either/or with strength and weakness in a powerful woman – there; that’s it. Great message to send out with this story.

I look forward to reading more in the Shawn Angel mystery series!

On Paid Leave (A Shawn Angel Mystery Book 1) by Beth Mikell

Detective Shawn Angel is suffering from PTSD and decides to go on vacation to relax and unwind. She does not expect a missing person and murder. So she decides to do the right thing and help her former boyfriend in the investigation. Soon she finds herself in trouble and may be the next one to end up dead.

The plot is original, with twists, turns and surprises. Told in alternating voices, I got to know what each person was thinking and feeling. That made the story much more enjoyable. I really liked Shawn, she is down to earth and all around likable, flaws and all. She tries to relax and take a vacation, yet she still decides to help solve a crime (even if her life is in danger). I highly recommend On Paid Leave to those who love a great mystery.

On Paid Leave by Beth Mikell is the first book in a new series, Shawn Angel Mysteries.

Shawn Angel is a police detective on paid leave due to an attack she survived by a serial killer she's been hunting.

Shawn is carrying the scars from that attack, both physical and mental, and it interferes with every aspect of her life.

This story was impossible to put down; it evoked real emotions as you walk through Shawn's issues with her. Absolute 5-star must-read.

The Golden Boy was an obsessive serial killer Detective Shawn Angel has been hunting. He left her physically and emotionally scarred, and made a point of hunting her friends and family. It is really isolating to think that folks connected to you could be targets. A really good excuse for not letting yourself get closer to people.

Facing her trauma and her foe will come at a high cost to Shawn and those around her.

Intense psychological thriller!

On Paid Leave is the first book in the "A Shawn Angel Mystery" series and is a great start to this series.

I really enjoyed this romantic suspense story. The characters are well developed and interesting. Shawn's PTSD is handled well by the author. The storyline is well written and captured my interest from the start, with murder, danger, intrigue, and a second chance for romance.

I read and reviewed this book with no obligation.

On Paid Leave - This is my first read by this author and I was surprised. The story is well written and thought out. The multiple storylines are interesting and detailed enough to keep the reader immersed in the pages. The emotions are well written.

The characters are realistic and with intelligent dialogues. Near the end, the conflict between Finn and Leo did not feel real nor did their actions and dialogue. The car accident did not come across as realistic. Shawn is an interesting character and I like the way the author describes Shawn's problems and demons without putting her down as a silly, weak female with all sorts of nutty thoughts. She is aware of her trials and tribulations and struggles to regain her life and control back.

There is good intrigue and suspense throughout the story. This one of the better crime stories I have read in a long time. I found this book on Booksprout. 4*

Marked For Death - Hoping for another good read I was thoroughly disappointed by chapter three. Acting on sexual attraction in less than 10 hours at most, ridiculous. The dialogue is not realistic and a bit ridiculous, like bad Hollywood scripting. Luke uses inappropriate language and behavior when talking at Sabene.

There is not enough development on her to get a feel. I did not care for the heavy vulgar language used by Bizet, the bad guy. He also comes across as a Hollywood B-grade stereotype.

I am glad I read On Paid Leave first, which was well done. I found this book on Booksprout. 2*

Shawn Angel narrates at lightning speed, and her humor at all the wrong moments is something to which many of us can relate. The story has just enough memory, romance, and mystery to keep the pages turning.
