About the author

Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux was a French journalist and author of detective fiction.

In the English-speaking world, he is best known for writing the novel The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, 1910), which has been made into several film and stage productions of the same name, such as the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical. It was also the basis of the 1990 novel Phantom by Susan Kay.

Leroux went to school in Normandy and studied law in Paris, graduating in 1889. He inherited millions of francs and lived wildly until he nearly reached bankruptcy. Then in 1890, he began working as a court reporter and theater critic for L'Écho de Paris. His most important journalism came when he began working as an international correspondent for the Paris newspaper Le Matin. In 1905 he was present at and covered the Russian Revolution. Another case he was present at involved the investigation and deep coverage of an opera house in Paris, later to become a ballet house. The basement consisted of a cell that held prisoners in the Paris Commune, which were the rulers of Paris through much of the Franco-Prussian war.

He suddenly left journalism in 1907, and began writing fiction. In 1909, he and Arthur Bernède formed their own film company, Société des Cinéromans to simultaneously publish novels and turn them into films. He first wrote a mystery novel entitled Le mystère de la chambre jaune (1908; The Mystery of the Yellow Room), starring the amateur detective Joseph Rouletabille. Leroux's contribution to French detective fiction is considered a parallel to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's in the United Kingdom and Edgar Allan Poe's in America. Leroux died in Nice on April 15, 1927, of a urinary tract infection.

First time reading un roman policier en français !!
I actually enjoyed reading it, it's so much thrilling you're gonna keep flipping the pages..

I really liked «La Dame En Noir» I always love me a good mysterious personnage, especially that she has this «parfum extraordinaire» of hers, I also liked the character of her son, aka Rouletabille.

I'll insert some of the quotes I actually highlighted in the book; most of them are descriptive, which they represent my love for details *_*

“Soudain, sa main retomba, et il poussa un gémissement. Lui, tout à l'heure si rouge était devenu si pâle... si pâle qu'on eut dit que tout son sang s'était retiré de son cœur.” p37

I love Gaston Leroux's phantom of the opera and hoped his other works would be as good but so far I haven't quite enjoyed them. Not terrible but not as memorable as phantom

Πραγματικά λυπάμαι πάρα πολύ κάθε φορά που "αναγκάζομαι" να φιλοδωρήσω οποιοδήποτε βιβλίο -πόσο μάλλον αστυνομικό- με ένα αστεράκι. Από την άλλη,είδα αρκετές μονάστερες κριτικές άλλων αναγνωστών και λέω "ΟΚ,δεν είμαι εγώ η υπερβολική."
Μπορεί να είναι έργο του Gaston Leroux και σέβομαι το ότι είναι ο δημιουργός του "Φαντάσματος της Όπερας",ανάμεσα σε άλλα,αλλά δεν μπορώ να παραβλέψω πως αυτό το βιβλίο είναι ένα από τα πιο αδιάφορα και ασυνάρτητα που διάβασα ποτέ! Έχω ήδη μισοξεχάσει τα όσα διάβασα και θέλω να ξεχάσω και πως το διάβασα,γενικότερα.

Αν κάποιος -όπως εγώ,ας πούμε- δεν έχει διαβάσει το "Μυστήριο του Κίτρινου Δωματίου" πριν διαβάσει αυτό,απλά την πάτησε! ΟΛΟ το βιβλίο πατάει επάνω στο προηγούμενο. Οι χαρακτήρες μιλάνε συνεχώς για τα γεγονότα του άλλου βιβλίου,οι κινήσεις τους και οι πράξεις τους είναι βασισμένες στο άλλο βιβλίο,οι ελπίδες και οι φόβοι τους είναι απόρροια του άλλου βιβλίου,ο κακός έκανε πράξεις επονείδιστες στο άλλο βιβλίο... Ε ΩΡΑΙΑ ΡΕ ΠΑΙΔΙΑ,ΓΙΑΤΙ ΔΕΝ ΤΟ ΒΓΑΖΑΤΕ Σ'ΕΝΑ ΔΙΤΟΜΟ ΝΑ ΗΣΥΧΑΣΟΥΜΕ;!
Έχω διαβάσει άπειρα βιβλία που ανήκουν σε σειρές. Οπωσδήποτε γεγονότα του ενός αναφέρονται στο άλλο,οι ζωές των ηρώων κυλάνε με μια φυσιολογική ροή και επηρεάζονται επομένως από τα προηγούμενα αλλά όταν ένα βιβλίο θέλει να λέγεται ΑΥΤΟΤΕΛΕΣ,οφείλει να αφηγείται μια ιστορία που μπορεί να σταθεί μόνη της,σε γενικές γραμμές. Διαφορετικά,πείτε ρε παιδιά πως πρόκειται για συνέχεια! Ξεκάθαρα πράγματα!

Κανένα ψυχογράφημα ηρώων,αδιάφορα και αδιάκοπα πήγαινε-έλα,δραματικές εξάρσεις που χαρακτηρίζονται από υπερβολή,άσκοπη υπερβολή γενικότερα,κατεβατά χωρίς καμία συνοχή για να γεμίσουν οι σελίδες,σχεδιαγράμματα πύργων με μια αχρείαστη ανάλυση τύπου σημείο Α,σημείο Β,σημείο Ζ... που μου θύμιζαν κάτι κατόψεις μινωϊκών ανακτόρων που διδασκόμουν στη σχολή,ένα κακό που πλανάται πάντα στην ατμόσφαιρα και έχει να κάνει με έναν απίστευτα διαβολικό άνθρωπο που όλοι τρέμουν,γιατί...ΕΚΑΝΕ ΤΡΟΜΕΡΑ ΠΡΑΓΜΑΤΑ ΣΤΟ ΑΛΛΟ ΒΙΒΛΙΟ,ΑΛΛΑ ΠΡΕΠΕΙ ΝΑ ΤΟ ΔΙΑΒΑΣΕΙΣ ΚΙ ΕΚΕΙΝΟ ΓΙΑ ΝΑ ΤΑ ΜΑΘΕΙΣ. :Ρ

Κατανοώ πως το βιβλίο γράφτηκε πριν από έναν αιώνα περίπου (αν όχι παραπάνω) και απευθύνεται σε εντελώς άλλο κοινό,οι ήρωες έχουν διαφορετικό τρόπο σκέψης και αντιδράσεις... Δεν μπορώ να περιμένω ένα σύγχρονο αστυνομικό με την ανάλογη δράση. Αλλά δεν σημαίνει πως θα καταπιώ αμάσητο κι ένα βιβλίο,επειδή θέλει να χαρακτηρίζεται 'κλασικό'. Η όλη αφήγηση μου θύμισε έναν από εκείνους τους τύπου που ξεκινάνε να σου διηγούνται μια ιστορία: ξεκινάνε από την αρχή του χρόνου για να φτάσουν κάάάποτε στην αρχή της ιστορίας,χρειάζονται τον διπλάσιο χρόνο για να φτάσουν στο ζουμί,αναφέρονται σε γεγονότα και πρόσωπα που σ' εκείνους είναι γνωστά αλλά σ' εσένα παντελώς άγνωστα και για τα οποία ακούς πρώτη φορά,αλλά πρέπει να τα ξέρεις υποτίθεται,χρησιμοποιούν όλη την φλυαρία και την πολυλογία του κόσμου για να πουν την ιστορία τους και τελικά καταλήγουν στο "πολύ κακό για το τίποτα".

Φαντάζομαι πως όσοι διάβασαν το "Κίτρινο δωμάτιο" πριν το βρήκαν -ίσως- διαφωτιστικό ως προς τις επόμενες κινήσεις των ΓΝΩΣΤΩΝ ΣΕ ΕΚΕΙΝΟΥΣ ΗΡΩΩΝ και την κατάληξη της τύχης τους. Εγώ,διαβάζοντάς το ανεξάρτητα,δηλώνω απλά απογοητευμένη. Το μόνο θετικό οι σχετικά λίγες σελίδες του,κάτι που μου στοίχησε μόνο 2,5 μέρες από τη ζωή μου.

Ώρες ώρες αναρωτιέται κανείς, πως γίνονται κάτι τύποι σαν τον Λερού γνωστά συγγραφικά ονόματα. Όχι μόνο δεν γίνομαι αφοριστικός, αλλά τα βάζω και με τον εαυτό μου που ενώ θυμόμουν τι μετριότητα ήταν το "κίτρινο δωμάτιο", γύρισα για να κάτσω στον άξονα και να πάρω το ερέθισμα ακόμα μια φορά. Ας όψεται το ποσό που είχα δώσει για να πάρω την κασετίνα από την Διόπτρα.

Εκνευριστικό. Απίστευτα, απίστευτα εκνευριστικό, ρηχό, μια ακραία μελοδραματική εξτραβαγκάνζα, μια σπασμωδική κλαούνα που κάνει τον Φώσκολο να κρατάει σημειώσεις ενώ ταυτόχρονα κλαίει σε εμβρυακή στάση για την ερασιτεχνία του στο δράμα. Συνοχή; Μηδέν. Ποιότητα γραφής; Ανεπαρκής, κακή, σχεδόν ανύπαρκτη. Λεξιλόγιο; Ανακυκλούμενο διαρκώς και εξαιρετικά περιορισμένο. Μια γεύση απόγνωσης που όσο περνάνε οι σελίδες αυξάνεται μιας και φοβάσαι ότι δεν θα τελειώσει ποτέ. Η επίλυση της υπόθεσης; Από αναβολή σε αναβολή. Η υπόθεση αυτή καθεαυτή; Κακογραμμένη και γεμάτη τρύπες. Τα καρφιά του Τσέχοφ αναρίθμητα, οι εξηγήσεις λίγες, αν βέβαια δοθούν. Η επίκληση στο συναίσθημα γίνεται τόσο συχνά που σε κάθε επόμενη σκηνή κλάματος και απόγνωσης, σε πιάνει μια αηδία και καταλήγεις να είσαι εσύ ο απεγνωσμένος.

Πολύ πιθανό να είναι και το χειρότερο βιβλίο αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας που έχω διαβάσει. Υπερβάλω; Κάντε μια προσπάθεια.

Είχα διαβάσει πρόσφατα το "πείραμα" του Φίτζεκ. Σε αυτό, περιέγραφε ένα κείμενο/έκθεση πάνω σε ένα έγκλημα, που αν κάποιος το διαβάσει δεν θα είναι ποτέ πια ο ίδιος. Μάλλον για το "άρωμα της γυναίκας με τα μαύρα" θα έλεγε.

Πιστεύω πως έχασα το χρόνο μου διαβάζοντας το. Είναι ασυνήθιστα δακρύβρεχτο με ένα τρόπο που με έκανε πάρα πολύ να δυσκολευτώ να προχωρήσω, από τις λίγες φορές που ένα βιβλίο απ' αυτά που χρησιμοποιώ για το φαγητό και πριν τον ύπνο - το αντίστοιχο των μπλόκμπάστερ, σε βιβλίο - με απωθούσε να συνεχίσω.

Επιπλέον, ο ''κακός'' αποτελεί ένα κάκιστο μιμητισμό του Κολλέρ / Χερέρα και όποιοι γοητεύονται απ' τη συγκεκριμένη φόρμα κακών εκατοντάδες φορές προτιμότερο να διαβάσουν τον Πατήρ - Γκοριό, τις Χαμένες Ψευδαισθήσεις και τις Εταίρες του Παρισιού.

Το μυστήριο θα μπορούσε να αποδειχτεί πολύ ενδιαφέρον αν απουσίαζε το τόσο υπερβολικό μελό που αντί να αποδώσει την αγωνία και το ακόρεστο στην ψυχή του Ζοζέφ, μετατρέπει το εγχείρημα σε ένα από 'κεινα τα υπερβολικά λιπαρά πιάτα που είναι αδύνατο να φας. Κι επίσης. θαρρώ το παρακάνει με το τρικ εδώ παπάς εκεί παπάς, ένιωσα στενόχωρα με την τόση επανάληψη αυτού του ομολογουμένως ωραίου επινοήματος. Παράλληλα και πέρα απ' τους χαρακτήρες του προηγούμενου βιβίου, οι υπόλοιποι δεν σκιαγραφούνται, την ψυχολογία των στιγμών τη μάντευα παρακάμπτοντας φράσεις που εμένα τουλάχιστον με οδηγούσαν σε άτοπα.

Στα θετικά όμως, είναι εξαιρετικά καλογραμμένο και στα σημεία που αποφεύγονται τα συγκινησιακά επαναλαμβανόμενα τρικ δίνει μια όμορφη ατμόσφαιρα.

Please don't read this review if you have not read "The Mystery of the Yellow Room".

I got this via the Kindle, but it is not showing up on Goodreads except as a paperback book. I should have maybe passed this by once the introduction even said that this book was not as great as The Mystery of the Yellow Room. We have a sequel to that book with characters we have already met from the previous book.

Joseph Rouletabille and Sanclair are back. It has been two years since Rouletabille has solved "The Mystery of the Yellow Room." Now both men are present at the marriage of Mathilde Stangerson and Robert Darzac. They have put the past behind them and both feel comfortable getting married now that the person who was behind the events from "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" is now dead.

So as a reader we get a huge reveal regarding Rouletabille and his connections to some of the characters. I really found that hard to be believed. I still struggled on to keep reading, even after the author put himself in the novel and had him meet Rouletabille. But I threw in the towel when I got to the author trying to describe where everyone was headed and the multiple ways in and out of the place and none of it made any sense. Frankly the whole book premise didn't make sense. I totally skipped to the end just to see how it ended and thanked goodness that I did not force myself to keep reading. There is too much information in this one and not enough dialogue. We have Sanclair just telling us the readers everything. And Rouletabille feels like a totally different person in this one. I can see why this book was not well thought of by people. I know that there were subsequent mysteries starring Rouletabille, but I am going to pass on them.

Ευχαριστήθηκα αρκετά την ανάγνωση της ιστορίας που είχε αρκετό μυστήριο και αρκετούς υπόπτους για να με κάνει να μαντεύω και να ρίχνω τις υποψίες μου και σε κάποιον άλλον σε κάθε κεφάλαιο για το ποιος είναι τελικά ο Λαρσάν και πως κατάφερε για άλλη μια φορά να εισχωρήσει ανάμεσα στους πρωταγωνιστές της ιστορίας!

I sufficiently enjoyed reading this story which had a satisfying mystery and suspects to keep me guessing and place my suspicions in a different one with each passing chapter in my attempt to figure out who Larsan was and how he managed again to intrude once again amongst the main characters of the story!

I'm over this series. I really liked Rouletabille in the first book but learning more of his back story made him less interesting. Also, the contrivances just piled up to a silly extent and it did that annoying Sherlock Holmes type thing where nothing is explained until a big info dump at the end.

The villain was overly cartoonish MAJOR SPOILER I don't care how much of a 'Master of Disguise' he was, he would not have been able to impersonate someone and fool his wife, father in law and friends and the new characters were boring (with the exception of Edith and the russian Prince, I wanted more of them!)

Whilst I love any story set in Imperial Russia, I'm going to give the next in this series a miss.

Découvert via un très chouette livre audio ! Le texte et le style sont savoureux, l'histoire plutôt agréable à suivre, mais j'ai trouvé le mystère assez peu prenant et les explications finales pas très crédibles.

I love "Mystery of the Yellow Room" for several reasons--and Joseph Rouletabille is a standout reason for that. He's a play on your stereotypical detective archetype, but his antics in the first novel were eccentric enough that he was enjoyable to read about and I found him hilarious.

"Perfume of the Lady in Black" was just not as exciting as the first novel. We catch up with all of the previous characters 2 years later, and spend the novel chasing Larsan again. While I liked getting to read up on Rouletabille's backstory, he just did not feel as present in this one and the plot felt weighed down by a lot of excessive detail and red herrings. It didn't feel like the major action moments were as thrilling either.

I think we spent too much time in Sainclair's head with this book, and I frankly found him irritating by the end. I would love to read more Rouletabille books if the actual protagonist features front-and-center in the future.

I can't bring myself to rate it any lower than 3 stars because it's Rouletabille, and I like this cocky Jr. reporter/detective, but this one was a little disappointing.

I much preferred this over the first Joseph Rouletabille book, The Mystery of the Yellow Room. This felt more crafted than the first, which is quite a feat considering the first one was nothing to sneeze at. The reader learns more about Rouletabille this round, back to his childhood and what sparks his memories of the lady in black in the first book. It's not required to read The Mystery of the Yellow Room first, but I think it enhances the reading to already have a little idea as to who this Rouletabille fellow is. Like I said, the glimpse into his childhood doesn't hurt either.

Like Yellow Room this mystery involves a locked room, but overall this story felt more complete. I was surprised that this was published only a year after Yellow Room - Leroux seemed to have grown as a writer in that one year, using nice literary tricks like throwing himself into the story as a background character. He did it when it wasn't the next best thing in literature, so even now it feels fresh.

Rouletabille was off to another adventure at the end of Lady in Black, but these were the only two books I actually owned. Eventually I'll check to see if the library has any of these books, but for now it's time to move on from Leroux - as tempting as it is to stop everything and find the third book which appears to take place in Russia.

In addition to the series character, Joseph Rouletebille, and his friend Sainclair, there are characters from the first in the series, The Mystery of the Yellow Room. There are multiple references to that title and, though not exactly spoilers, it is highly recommended that be read first. Well, "highly recommended" only if you actually plan to read this one.

I halfway wish I had not read this one, but it ticked off a year in my Mysteries Challenge. Only in that way can I say I'm glad I read this. It felt padded, and I thought there were unnecessary paragraphs. Apparently in the original - and maybe in existing print editions - there is a map of an old castle. Leroux takes great pains to use letters and points on the map to explain parts of that old building and the relationships between parts. Unfortunately, only the narrative was included in this one: no map for reference. I thought there were other parts that went on unnecessarily.

The resolution of the mystery was good. I admit I had not made a single attempt to figure it out, so I wasn't fooled or surprised. For me, this is a high 2-stars.

Une seconde enquête en huis clos qui m’a un peu déçue par rapport au Mystère de la chambre jaune.

On retrouve les mêmes personnages dans un nouvel endroit où cette fois nous avons un corps en trop (j’en dirais pas plus), mai l’auteur m’a un peu perdue dans trop de longueurs. Ça reste quand même une bonne enquête, et je n’ai rien vu venir, mais pas de plot twist incroyable qui m’a fait accrocher.

J’aime quand meme mon petit rouletabille et je suis contente d’avoir enfin eu la réponse au parfum de la femme en noir, mais finalement c’est assez minime dans ce récit.

Сюжет цікавий, вбивство у зачиненій кімнаті, підозрюються всі, і наче заноситься на пристойний детектив, але тут бах! бух! лунає сентиментальний романс, і починається мильна опера з сімейними таємницями зовсім вже безпомічного штибу. Треба перечитати першу книгу серії, там автор тримався.

L’auteur a tenté de refaire le succès du Mystère de la Chambre Jaune.
C’est malheureusement trop long, trop pompeux, et pas aussi passionnant que sa première aventure.
Très déçu, alors que l’histoire aurait pu être passionnante, elle était juste chiante.

As a sequel to Mystery of the Yellow Room this one surprised me; it's less straightforward as a mystery, in fact I'd say part of the puzzle is figuring out what the mystery actually is, or which of the multiple questions that get brought up throughout the book actually matter. This "looseness" is also reflected in Rouletabille's actions and demeanor, whose usual genius is incapacitated by the very personal circumstances that surround the central events of the novel, which also casts Sinclair, his assistant, in more of a handler role and makes both of them feel like onlookers rather than active participants. By the time the explanations came, I honestly wasn't as invested in the mystery aspect and some of the usual satisfaction involved was lost on me.

I gave up on this book less than 25% into it. First reason is that the solving or even understanding of the mystery requires a familiarity with the map of the castle. Being as this was an e-book, there was no map.

Second reason was I that although I thoroughly enjoyed "Phantom of the Opera" and managed to finish "The Yellow Room," this was just too overwritten, overblown, and just downright purple. Consider this--there's a horrific storm blowing outside. The narrator goes to check on the main character. He finds the main character standing in front of an open window "blowing kisses at the storm." Sorry, but even though the characters AND writer are French, that's just a bit too much for me.

Αρκεί να διαβάσετε πολύ προσεκτικά τη σελίδα 75 με την κάτοψη του Πύργου, να κρατήσετε σημειώσεις, να τις αποδελτιώσετε, να τις κάνετε υπνοπαιδεία, και ιδανικά να δοκιμάσετε και ένα 3D πλάνο των δωματίων.

Λαμβάνοντας πάντα υπόψιν το context, ας πούμε ότι είναι ενδιαφέρον και ευχάριστο *χασμουριέται*.

Toujours excellent, quoiqu’un peu long. La première moitié du bouquin est très descriptive et il ne se passe pas grand chose (voire carrément rien). Puis l’intrigue s’accélère mais trop de choses se passent et ça devient un peu confus. La solution de l’enquête est délivrée et expliquée entièrement sur les toutes dernières pages et c’est un peu dommage je trouve.
Néanmoins le livre reste très divertissant et la lecture est agréable. Je suis toujours aussi friande de l’écriture de Gaston Leroux.

This book is a suspenseful but overwrought mystery by the author of The Phantom of the Opera. The book is very atmospheric but it is steeped in so much detail and overheated drama that it is at times hard to follow the actual of progress of the solution of the mystery.

Non ho più l’età per i gialli d’inizio secolo.
Nonostante qualche colpo di scena ben assestato, e l’interesse per il prosieguo delle avventure di Sainclair e Rouletabille, ho trovato “Il profumo della dama in nero” di una devastante lentezza. Già alla descrizione della pianta del castello con le varie torri, cancelli ed ingressi, ho accarezzato l’idea di gettare la spugna.
La risoluzione finale è geniale, ma non riscatta lo svolgimento estremamente prolisso, considerando che la storia si sviluppa nell’arco di 4-5 giorni che sembrano durare un’eternità.

Jubilatoire. L'enquête n'est qu'un prétexte pour beaucoup de poésie, d'émotions et d'humour. Encore mieux après avoir vu la superbe adaptation cinématographique de Bruno Podalydes qui pointe pour le lecteur "tout ce que l'on ne voit pas et qui est immense"
