1.5 stars, really.
Okay, so, as others have pointed out - this is not a book, this is a sample couple of chapters, written by a dog (who sounds exactly like her owner, just with a smaller vocabulary) and the rest of the thing (from 36%) is padded out with tweets written by other people, about their love for their dogs.
Now, I love Miranda Hart. I really do. I need to underline that for the sake of what comes next. This was very disappointing. The writing is bland and empty, with some quite shocking spelling errors and homonym slips, for example:
“Right now, back to the point in hand, I mean, paw. Although I get to chat to you a bit in Peggy and Me I simply can’t wait until that is published. I am just to to TOO excited. So I have decided to write my own. Get it published before Miranda’s. CHEEKY PEGGY!”
24-26% in, Miranda and Me, by (Peggy) Miranda Hart
To to too.
But the main issue with this one was twofold.
1) if it’s promotional and therefore, presumably, intended to increase sales for the main book, it should have been not only better written - thereby increasing interest in the main book - it should have all been the work of the main author, rather than filled up with tweets from other people.
2) I can name easily a dozen authors who are self-published (which some readers can be a bit sniffy about, as if it suggests an absence of quality) who could write better than this in their sleep. All I can think is: if this was written by really anybody else, it would never have been published.
Also, re: the tweets - the book makes a point of saying some of the tweets have been "edited for clarity". Shame they didn’t bother to spellcheck them because I found two errors without really looking.
I still love Miranda but this was disappointing.
