Thirteen-year-old Griff Lindon is dead. Murdered. But she’s determined to make the killer that stole her young life away pay. Her ghost forms an unlikely alliance with Kimberly Trent, the rookie detective assigned to her case. The problem is that Kimberly has troubles of her own.
Kim’s sister was also thirteen when she was murdered by a serial killer who was never caught, and the similarity in ages is enough to stir up old memories that will forever haunt her. Even though it’s been almost twenty years, an ominous feeling that the killer is still out there makes Kim fearful that he’s not done.
With no clues, her sister's case has gone cold, but it just could be that a ghost of a girl will be the one to help her stop him once and for all.
Griff Lindon is a good kid but she has her moments, so after Anica's brithday party she walks home alone, going into the woods and missing curfew to meet someone. Things take an ugly turn though when she is heading home after and is attacked only to wake up to her own dead body. She's determined to help the Lead detective Kim track down who it was that murdered her, and also to help Kim in the process. Kim has her own past, one she can't help recalling while working on Griff's murder. Kim's sister was kidnapped when she was thirteen also and was later found dead but the case was never solved. Kim harbors a secret about her sisters death but also can't stop feeling as if the killer is still out there.
I really enjoyed this one and I really need the sequel. The plot unfolded really well and Kim's disbelief and eventual acceptance of not only Griff but the supernatural was believable and developed great. I also enjoyed the whole mystery of who was responsible for Griff's death and I'm sure it's not hard to guess who it ends up being but I didn't know even though the foreshadowing and clues were all there. Usually in mystery books they just bring out the person who is responsible towards the end and there's no way to guess but here we have the possible suspects all introduced early on so it was fun to keep trying to figure out who it was based on the clues uncovered. I love Griff and Kim, both were great characters. I would give this book 4.5 stars, only because I wish the author had given more depth to the other characters as well like Veronica instead of presenting her as so black and white awful.
Griff Lindon is one of those teenagers that while she's only thirteen she thinks she's going on thirty and refuses to listen to her parents. After attending a party at a friend's house Griff takes off on her own into the woods to meet up with a friend before going home. This however will be the biggest mistake of Griff's short life when someone attacks and murders her in the woods.
Kimberly Trent became a police detective after having tragedy strike her family at a young age when her thirteen year old sister was murdered. Getting the call when Griff's body is found Kim is determined to catch the killer that so brutally murdered young Griff. But as Kim is investigating the case with her partner she begins to hear a voice that no one else seems to notice. Can the ghost of Griff actually be communicating with the detective?
Deadspeak is the first book of the Deadspeak Mysteries series by Ruth Bainbridge. While the story is a thriller read with the detectives investigating the murder of a young girl it's also mixed with the supernatural aspect of having a ghost help with the case of her own murder.
I actually really enjoyed this story and thought Griff made an excellent addition to the story. She's determined to help solve her case and can often verify when suspects are lying to the police. The story actually became full of twists that I wasn't quite expecting while reading and really held my attention all throughout. Would definitely be interested in seeing where the author would take the story next after solving this case.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Seeing all these other reviews of this book, I'm certain this is a clear case of "It's not you, it's me".
This is an investigative thriller with a paranormal twist to it, and while I enjoyed the original premise and the likable main characters, I never felt terribly invested in the story and its outcome. The mystery just didn't grip me the way it should have, and I can't even exactly pinpoint why. Neither the pacing nor the flowery writing were my thing, and I found myself skimming several times, but all in all, it was a fairly entertaining read.
ARC provided by the author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
One thing for certain, this book is not Lovely Bones, a book that is somewhat similar in plot, which was very popular a few years ago. This book is far more interesting. Griff has been murdered. Griff was and well known in her small community and well liked. She was also a tad bit rebellious, which cost her. After going to a friend’s party, Griff leaves early, under the ruse that her father is picking her up. However, that never happens, and Griff goes to the town mysterious woods, where she has a short meeting with a couple of friends, and ultimately meets her demise. Once the murder is discovered, Griff’s ghost forms a friendly association with Kim Trent, the young rookie detective assigned to investigate the murder. Kim has secrets: her sister was murdered abut twenty years before, with no murderer caught, in the now cold case. Griff and Kim begin “talking” to each other as the case progresses. What the reader is treated to are two inner monologues, or “deadspeak” (Kim can “hear” Griff’s ideas, even though Griff obviously is not sure herself exactly what happened that night), as the police plough through the evidence and clues to find out what really happened to Griff.
The author has written a fascinating novel, wherein there is a good mix of mystery, paranormal and detective work. I found it interesting to witness, through reading, how Griff plays a role in this mystery and its solution. I also found it interesting to follow Detective Kim Trent, as she maneuvers through the myriad of events, persons and clues that she uncovers herself as well as those uncovered with the help of the now dead Griff. The idea behind this shows some definite creativity on the part of the author, as this no longer becomes a simple murder mystery. There was definitely enough difference to keep my attention throughout. This is a different sort of mystery, as the paranormal aspect lends to this unusual sort of tale. I think anyone who is looking for something a bit different will enjoy it, as well as someone who enjoys a good, solid mystery. I received this from Library Thing to read and review.
I have to say that I was entirely surprised by this book. Reading the synopsis I immediately thought "oh great, another Lovely Bones." but it was SO MUCH BETTER!!!
First of all, the characters are so rich and just real. Griff is written like a 13 year old girl, even when she is a ghost. I appreciated how the author gave you both hers and Kim's internal monologue. You can hear their thoughts and why they react the way that they do. The confusion, the need for justice, the search for the truth of what happened is explained through the experience of the living and the dead. I also love how everything that Kim was experiencing wasn't just written off or taken for granted. Other people in the story saw how communicating with Griff was affecting her. The story was much more real for all of those little details.
The woods were almost their own character. They seem to be living, breathing, and dangerous. Just the description of the woods on the night of Griff's murder gave me goosebumps. As they were searching for the body I was seriously creeped out...I even turned more lights on in the room. You are just sucked in by the darkness of the woods contrasted with all of the other parts of the town. Even the police station isn't as ominous as the trail that takes you to the lake.
I also love how the investigation is detailed so you come to the same conclusions as Kim and her partner. You see all the evidence they see. You hear everything that they do. You realize that something isn't right right along with the detectives. Every word, every movement, every nuance means something. I found myself going back pages to see exactly what was said and how it was said, and yet I finished the book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down.
If you are a fan of mystery, suspense, drama, paranormal, or if you just want to see if you like any of those, then this book is a great place to start.
Deadspeak by ruth bainsbridge. Things look different when you’re dead.

Even though it’s been almost twenty years, an ominous feeling that the killer is still out there makes Kim certain that he’s not done ... This was an absolutely fantastic read. I loved kim and how she could talk to Griff. I was gripped. Very cleverly written with a twist. 5*. Netgalley and xpresso book tours.
When I first decided to read this book I assumed that it would be similar to "The Lovely Bones" (which I did enjoy) but this one deserves to be read on its own merit. Thirteen year old Griff Lindon has been murdered and "enlists" the help of the detective who is working to solve her murder. I enjoyed the perspective of a teenage girl whose hopes and dreams have been stripped away in the worst way possible and a detective who is fighting demons of her own.
If I had to sum this storyline up in one word I would have to say it was "Amazing". The characters were so life like that I felt like I was in the room with them. The author did a great job of portraying Griff and her friends and their responses, actions and attitudes were spot on. From the fist chapter the author dangles the bait and you are caught hook line and sinker. As the storyline progresses and more of the events around the young girls death come to light you start to think like a detective and try to piece together the puzzle before the real cops in the story do. This is a complicated mystery that has connections to the past adding some interesting background on Kim Trent increasing the intrigue and raising more questions. It was well written, engaging, filled with angst, heartache, betrayal and a blue eyed ghost who wants to help even though she is dead. Griff was such a cute young lady, she had such a glowing spirit that even death could no dampen it. As a mystery I give the author credit as I was not sure who was guilty and that is rare for me. I was on the edge of my seat quickly turning the page thinking I was going to get answers to my next set of questions when the story ended. I am pretty sure that I said some bad words at the time but it made more and more motivated to see if book 2 is out. I will be adding Ms. Bainbridge to my new favorite author list.
This is not your average murder mystery or ghost story!
Confusion reins at the beginning, as the writer uses a main character-Griff-to becoken readers to continue reading so they can find out what is actually going on. Even after the news caused my emotions to plummet and shatter, I felt compelled to continue. This book had a lot of different elements: paranormal, mystery, police procedure, murder, and a thirteen year old girl trying to come to grips with a major change. All these aspects worked together to twist and turn things around so jt was difficult to know what would take place next. It also wasn't helped that Griff tried to help, despite not being completely sure of what happened to her and why. The author did an excellent job creating a book that grabs hold of a reader and forces them to think. There are some times where things are spelled out too much and more imagery could be used, but the overall uniqueness and story makes this a worth while book to read. I have would have given it 3.5 stars but was unable to do so. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Griff Lindon is your fairly normal 13-year-old girl. She's pretty, has lots of friends, and a crush. After taking a shortcut through the woods one night, she is also dead.
But she's determined to get the man who killed her. Her ghost won't rest until she does.
Her ghost latches onto Kimberly Trent, the new detective who is investigating her very first homicide. Needless to say, she's a bit startled when she starts hearing a young voice in her head.
This case has become real personal to Trent. Her sister was sexually assaulted, murdered and beheaded when she herself was 13 years old. Her sister's killer was never caught. That's the reason Trent joined the police.
Who killed Griff? and Why? Seemingly she had so enemies. Trent will have to sift and sort through a lot of lies, a lot of secrets. Suspects are many, the boys she count as her friends, the man who she dog sits for, a random stranger?
And will Griff help her resolve her sister's murder, even though its been 20 years?
I don't read a lot of paranormal, so it's a real treat when I come across one as well written as this one. I loved the characters of Griff and Kimberly. Watching their relationship evolve made me smile. No one can ignore a teenager with a goal in mind. Kimberly's partner/trainer is out of the loop. Kim isn't going to tell him about the ghost she sees and hears, and trying to remain in character when Griff is yelling in her ear takes a lot of self control.
Even though this is a murder mystery, it's a light-hearted read and the pages seem to fly once you start reading. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
WARNING: CLIFF HANGER

Detective Kimberly Trent hears the dead. In this instance Griff Lindon is determined to make his killer pay. Kimberly is seeing so many similarities between Griff's case and her sister's cold case. Written with an intensity that one could be forgiven for thinking it was real. We grieve Griff's death and search for answers of how this could happen and who someone could harm a child in such a way.
From the chaos we will find focus. As Det. Trent gets closer the reader can feel the anger anticipation of bringing justice to a killer and peace to his victims.
My hat is off to Ruth Bainbridge for a well crafted story. This is the first book I have read by Ruth Bainbridge and I am greatly pleased. I simply can't wait for the next book in this series. I know this is short but believe me if you like mysteries and detectives and a sweet ghost you will like this.
Detective Kim Trent discovers she can communicate with the ghost of a murder victim. The two of them work together to solve the mystery of who killed Griffin. I enjoy books like this, however I don't like when there is a cliff hanger and the reader is forced to buy the next book to find out what happens.
This is a great book! The characters and suspense were well developed and interesting. I enjoyed seeing them discover their new reality and learn to accept and use it to solve the crime. I will definitely continue reading this series.
Deadspeak by Ruth Bainbridge is amazing, y'all — unlike anything I've ever read. I don't usually read paranormal books, but I am SO glad I made an exception this time.
Deadspeak has two main characters, and the action is told from their alternating points of view. Kimberly Trent is a first-year detective for the Harbinger, Ohio PD. Almost 20 years ago, her big sister, age 13, was abducted and murdered. Kim has been tormented by this horrific event ever since, which led to her becoming a cop.
Griffin Lindon states in the book's opening sentence: "I'm not always right, but then, I'm only thirteen." She has just completed eighth grade, where she was voted Most Popular in a landslide. Griff has charisma, and IT — that something that makes everyone want to be around her. Well, almost everyone — because someone murders her in the first chapter.
Griff, who's now a ghost, is at the crime scene when Kim arrives with her partner to investigate Griff's murder. While there, Griff realizes that Kim can hear her speak. After a bit, they develop a rather odd partnership. Griff doesn't remember any details of her attack at first, but eventually remembers enough to help solve her own murder.
Griff enjoys helping Kim so much that she has decided to stick around awhile (for them to solve more murders, in future books in the series). I loved Deadspeak, and can't wait to read Deadspeak 2. The Deadspeak Mysteries is a series I will definitely continue with.
I recommend Deadspeak to anyone looking for a stupendous paranormal, suspenseful, mystery/ thriller. Deadspeak is a winner, and I can't say enough good things about it. I loved Deadspeak by Ruth Bainbridge, and award it my highest rating of Five Stars!
Note: I received a complimentary copy of Deadspeak, and voluntarily reviewed it. All opinions shared are 100% my own.
DEADSPEAK by Ruth Bainbridge is AMAZING!!! It was nothing like I expected and I LOVED it! It’s some weird hybrid that’s part mystery, part thriller, part paranormal, part ghost story—and all gripping suspense. The end result is fascinating, and had me flipping pages until my fingers bled.
The homicide of a thirteen-year-old girl sets the stage for what is to come, and while I didn’t know Griff Lindon very long, her murder hit me hard. I don’t know why it shocked me so much. I was horrified and felt a real sense of loss. If I had to guess, I’d say it was because it was written so believably. Ms. Bainbridge did a brilliant job, and even though not particularly graphic, it was SO disturbing to me—as if it happened to someone I knew.
In terms of the story, it opens with Griff Lindon explaining what she’s going through. She’s confused and alone and we wonder why. The rest of the story fills in the why and, oh, what a beautiful story it is!!! Imaginative and full of surprises, there is not one place where I succeeded in guessing what was going to happen next. It’s extremely unusual, and I appreciated that Ms. Bainbridge took the path less traveled and made this absolutely unpredictable.
DEADSPEAK hinges on Griffin staying behind after death to help Detective Kimberly Trent solve her murder, BUT (and this is a big BUT), she doesn’t remember all the details. This complicates what should be pretty simple, but there’s more. The other problem is that Kimberly Trent is keeping some pretty devastating secrets of her own. What was done to her and her family is so overwhelming that my heart went out to her. I bonded with this rich, complex character which brings us to another point of why this story worked so beautifully. It’s because the characters are divine—most especially the two leads, Griff Lindon and Kimberly Trent.
I don’t know if Ms. Bainbridge has a degree in psychology or if she’s only a student of the human condition, but she pretty remarkably nails each and every one of her characters. As Detective Trent does the yeoman job of tracking down Griff’s killer, we’re treated to these vignettes that delve into what makes the people interviewed tick. It makes Trent solving the homicide downright intriguing because at its heart, DEADSPEAK is a taut mystery.
I applaud Ms. Bainbridge for taking a chance and doing something different. I double applaud that she did it so brilliantly. There was another reviewer that mentioned Mystic Woods was almost another character. Yes! It’s true. I put it down to Ms. Bainbridge being a meticulous and complete writer. Everything in DEADSPEAK is developed, including the woods!
I highly, highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a gripping, unputdownable read! If your thing is superb writing, you will not be disappointed. DEADSPEAK has everything that a reader is looking for and more. DEADSPEAK is as good as it gets and I can’t wait to see what comes next!!!
I really liked this book! A mystery with a ghost on top of a great plot! In the plot there's another mystery from a childhood trauma. I hope there's going to be another book.
As others have mentioned, this book is similar to The Lovely Bones, but MUCH BETTER. The characters are well-written, the mystery is much more detailed and has more intricate plotlines. I LOVED this book. I have read several by Ruth Bainbridge and highly recommend you read them all.
