Hannah's finger can ignite a magical flame. But only mages deal with elemental fire, and all mages are men. The mage whispered to be her father is returning, and she intends to display her flame where he can see it. Her life changes with the dowsing of a flame. She has no friends, an uncertain future, and jealous enemies at every turn. But five years of working in the morning kitchen while listening to the gossip and cruel whispers serves her well. Her wit, sharp tongue and determination are honed to a razor edge and prepare her for the future.
I've never seen a dragon, but wish I had. I live in Washington State with my wife, youngest son, and dog named Molly. I spend my time doing what I love the most: writing about an action-packed fantasy world of dragons, and magic. My leisure time is spent traveling and exploring the beautiful countryside in the Pacific Northwest from high desert to forests to coastal terrain.
In recent years, I've published over a dozen fantasy books including one called "DRAGON! Stealing the Egg" which began the idea of how to live and survive in a world where dragons are part of the landscape. The Dragon Clan Series is built on that idea. It is unique in that it introduces a new main character in each of the eight books of the series, yet continues the same storyline.
The book entitled Blade of Lies: Mica Silverthorne Story was a finalist in an Amazon national novel writer’s contest in 2013. My most recent series is The Mage’s Daughter, which is a little action and a bit of magic.
This book lost a star because at no point did the plot settle. The entire book consisted of one problem after another none of which were solved only fled from. Everytime I thought "yes! Now the protagonist will start working towards a solution." Another road block showed up, or somebody died or something.
Plot progress is made only in the most minimal of ways, padded out with multiple tragedies and a total lack of any solid antagonist.
The protagonist touted as a talented mage, learns a total of... zero magic. They learn a little about magic, and a few related skills but at the end of this book she is either illiterate or only barely able to read. Had the author delayed a couple events by a week or two this could have been hand waves away into a have a spell which will help you learn faster. But no. The protagonist gets one skill per book, and she needed to learn knife throwing. Next book she'll finish off reading, three books later the mages daughter will cast her first spell. Hopefully the twentieth book in the series will have her at least proficient enough to finally take action.
I received this book from For Voracious Readers Only for an honest review.
When I read the synopsis, I was interested. A female mage sounded really cool. However, once I started reading, I found I had more questions:
1. Hannah is 11 but she doesn't really act like it. For someone who had never traveled before meeting the Old Mage, she has an uncanny knack for returning to places.
2. Everyone who could help her dies because of her. The entire kingdom is looking for her. Wow, before social media, how did the news travel that fast?
3. There were so many problems and not enough solutions. The bookends in the middle of travel, which is disappointing, even knowing there is another book. I would have liked to see some of the conflict resolved.
4. Until Hannah was discovered, it seemed that there were no plots to take down the king, but now there are?
So, I had some major problems with the book. I don't feel as if I got to know any of the characters well.
This is a cute story with a lot of potential. Unfortunately the plot runs on and on in a similar manner to a child speaking about their day. There were no solid parts to help develop the characters, just a litany of obstacles, disasters and deaths. After coming into contact with an 11 year old girl, grown men who have spent their lives dealing with courtly intrigue and danger drop dead with alarming speed. This sheltered little girl who worked lighting kitchen fires is suddenly more mature and worldly than most adults. The book ends abruptly in the middle of the characters traveling, which is never good. All in all a nice story that could use a bit of work to make it spectacular. I received a complimentary copy from VRO in return for an honest review.
This was a good story, but I honestly think it is for much younger people than myself. Young Hannah is quite the little learner. Curious about everything, and as Sir James said, " You ask the most intelligent questions." So much sorrow for an 11-year-old to deal with over a course of many days. After a while it got kind of old. I was kind of glad to be done with it. Probably won't read the rest of the series, not because I don't like it, but mainly it is for a younger audience than I. I can recommend this for say 10 to 14 years. And now I'm done.
I received this book from Voracious Readers for an honest review. This was a fantastic introduction to this series. It starts with meeting Hannah a lowly kitchen worker in the Earl's castle. We learn her true nature soon enough and how she is able to leave the Earl's castle. We follow Hannah as she learns more about herself and her family. Hannah is also being hunted but other Mages. We follow Hannah as she continues to run for her life and seek safety to learn what she needs learn so she can claim her place in the world. I enjoyed this book and will seek out the next book in the series.
Excellent! It was sad and then it was awesome, Hanna is adorable and a shrewd girl. She's also the making of a dangerous woman, I can't wait to read book two!
A very adorable book with great characters. I received a free copy through Voracious Readers Only and am looking forward to this series. Great read for all ages.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story line and I was drawn into the story and I worried about Hannah she was rescued and rescued and rescued but ended up having to rescue herself . It was wonderful story throughout and I was so sorry it ended so soon so please write a sequel as soon as possible thanks.
I was given a copy of this book by the author via Voracious Readers in return for an honest review. I enjoyed this, it is a fast paced story of a young girl whom seems to lose everyone close to her in her journey to learn about the magic she has. Well suited to young adult readers.
