Zachary Quack is a small but very determined duckling and he sets out to make friends with Hairy Maclary - whether he wants it or not. www. hairymaclary. comAuthor BiographyLynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. She went on to teach art before taking a break to start a family. She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes To Hide in Boxes. There was no looking back as Lynley went on to write and illustrate her own books for children. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. As well as being a visual delight, these are some of the most rewarding books for children and adults to read out loud. It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language. ' Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. Today, Lynley is a big fan of Quentin Blake 'because of his humour and very clever art work. - Hairy Maclary And Zachary Quack By Lynley Dodd
Dame Lynley Dodd is an internationally celebrated writer for children whose titles are highly regarded and much loved by her readers in New Zealand and around the world. Her stories are known for their lively sound qualities, curious animal characters, and the memorable illustrations that accompany the text. Lynley has received numerous awards, both for her writing and illustration, and in 2002 she was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to children’s literature.
This book would be great for looking at poetry in FS and years 1 to 3 as there is rhyme used throughout. It is also a lovely story accompanied by colourful illustrations. There are also some made up words which may be similar to what children would say such as ‘pittery’, ‘pattery’ and ‘skittery’, ‘skattery’. Capitalisation is also used to emphasise key words and could be used to show where extra expression may be used when reading aloud. Zachary Quack also helped Hairy Maclary when he was stuck in the water, so the story could also be used in PSHE to teach about helping others.
Will Hairy Maclary (a dog) and Zachary Quack (a duck) develop a beautiful friendship?
Stranger things have happened in the big-print, heavily illustrated, world of picture books.
Mostly the appeal of this story is the cute language and cuter pictures. For many readers, at any age, that's ALL a picture book needs. What I consider lightweight and forgettable would, to the intended readers, qualify as absolutely perfect.
On the behalf of those intended readers, sure, FIVE STARS. Because it takes all kinds of Goodreaders to make a world.

I really enjoy children books. And read them to my kids every night. But one thing I don't do it review them. Why I don't know, but I decided it was time to start.
There isn't a book by Lynley Dodd I dislike. I mean seriously they are so funny! The original book is a classic that every person on the planet knows! Always recommending this author for children's books.

This series, at least to me, lacks a lot of heart - it seems just a little too short and repetitive to really make children love the characters or enjoy the story, but it cannot be argued that a little duck is always cute.
This was far better than the first Hairy Maclary story, with an ideal layout once again for face to face reading with particularly small readers, but again just feels like it’s missing something - for me that something is a compelling story to really draw children in.
This is my favourite book so far by Lynley Dodd. This book has a real nice flow story wise. It sorta goes through the heroes journey. Dog is trying to sleep - duck comes and annoys him, he runs away and finds new spot, duck finds him and annoys him again. Eventually dog runs away but into danger and the duck helps to save him. After that, there's this nice new equilibrium and the two take a nap together.
This is a story of a sadhika and god being chased day and night night and brooding day…. Until finally he sees the sadhika refuses to stop chasing him despite his Lila (gods game) being set before him. To ruin a good thing is perhaps not intentional; but eventually if you try without fear of death one attains the final goal- friendship with krishna (the most difficult god to please; in Hindu philosophy)
Hairy Maclary wants to take a nap in a space in the shade, but Zachary Quack wanted to frolic and play. No matter where Hairy ran and hid, with a pittery pattery, skittery scattery, ZIP round the corner came Zachary Quack. But in the end after all the silliness Zachary became the perfect nap time friend.
This one has to be my favourite of the Hairy Maclary books - the characters actually get a little personality. The illustrations of the duckling were clearly drawn by an astute observer of toddlers - they capture so much character. Also, this book has a storyline.
Hairy Maclary Book 13 and the third one that I have read in this great series of little reads, which charm and make one laugh - a great character is Hairy Maclary, but so are all the other characters as well in his little world.
I can't get enough Hairy Maclary. I just love reading the rhymes aloud and am buoyed up by words like "pittery pattery skittery scattery". I also think 'Zachary Quack' is an excellent name for a duck!
A definite return to full star form for the series. Truly delightful, a very entertaining new character, and some psychological and social lessons along the way.
Of course the simple poetry remains top notch. Head and shoulders above most other doggerel (pun intended).
🐕 It was drowsily warm, with dozens of bees lazily buzzing thought flowers and trees. Hairy Maclary decided to choose a place in the shade for this afternoon snooze. He dozily dreamd as he lay on his back ... tucker up together with Zachary Quack 🐕
Loved this, made us laugh when poor Hairy Maclary is scared of the a little duckling & goes on to cause a lot of fuss. Short rhyming pages, great illustrations, such fun for little ones.
My wee one is too young yet to appreciate the story, but she enjoys the colourful pictures and lively rhyming. The Hairy Maclary books are amongst my favourite to read to her.
I like these books. I'm sure I'll have this one memorised really quick. They're great to tell her off the top of my head when she's starting to get restless in her buggy or something.
‘Zachary Quack, a small and determined duckling, sets out to play with a rather reluctant Hairy Maclary. A ‘cat and mouse’ chase follows, with the two characters ending up peacefully snuggled together after Zachary Quack has saved a soggy Hairy Maclary from the river.’ This book was wonderful. After reading Hairy Maclary I decided to read a few more books from Lynley Dodd’s enormously popular Hairy Maclary and Friends collection, and I am very glad that I did.
Unlike Hairy Maclary and Slinky Malinki; the two previous Lynley Dodd books I read recently, I have no memories of reading this book as a child so there was no nostalgia boost this time around, but on the other side of that coin, I got to experience everything for the very first time. This hilarious rhyming story captured my attention from the first page and held it until the very last. The way the lyrical rhymes carry the reader is quite magical, add to that the bright and blod, full colour illutrations and you have a wonderfully entertaining little book. As I am not the target audience for this book I can only imagine how much joy it must bring to young readers. The wonderful animal characters, the following and easy-to-read story, and the stunning illustrations are perfect for young readers. Lynley Dodd has done a fabulous job with this book. Since this book is targeted at young readers I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The story was sweet and the writing was perfect making this book just as entertaining for adult readers as it is for young ones. I am very glad that I have not only read this book but that I now own a copy of it to enjoy many times in the future. Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack by Lynley Dodd is a must-have for all young readers and their families.
My 4 year old chose this one for world book day. It's short, there's a good rhythm to the words and my son likes to say the repeating sections. I much prefer it to the original.
