With a hurricane bearing down on their local town, Jack decides it's a good time to go visit his father. Not his brightest idea, but he swears Ben to secrecy. When Ben cannot reach Jack and realizes he has taken his dog Scout too, Ben pretends he is heading home where he grabs Hero to track Ben and Scout in the woods. His other bestie, Noah, comes along too. They face several natural and nature-related disasters along the way, and cannot call for help in the remote forest area, even when they come across an urgent need to do so. Hero remains hero, and more accolades are earned by Ben and Hero. Not really written for adults.
I love me a good, fast-paced boy book, and adding a search and rescue to it just makes it about a hundred times cooler in my book.
Characters: Ben has a good heart, even if it does get him into some pretty deep trouble in this book. He and Hero are naturals at search and rescue. Noah is the greatest friend ever! Jack is still growing on me... but I prefer Noah.🤣 Hero and Scout are both awesome dogs!
Romance: N/A
Language: N/A
Violence/Gore: There are injuries, mentions of being stuck in a hurricane, what if they died, what if they couldn't find people? Flashflood, mudslides, near drowning... lots of things going down.
Overall: Again, I would have liked to see a touch more resolve to the ending... likedid Jack get to see his dad? Were there any repercussions for disobeying? You know, basic things like that.
Hero Hurricane Rescue is a fictional story written by Jennifer Li-Shotz. The story is about three boys who are friends and their dogs. Ben is the main character with his dog, Hero. Hero is a retired search and rescue dog that is dad used as a policeman in Gulfport. Ben and his two friends, Jack and Noah, play on the baseball team together and always hang out. Jack has a puppy, Scout, that he rescued with his friends. The story begins with the three friends playing near the forest and Jack tells Ben that he wants to see his father who lives in another town. He also asks Ben to not tell anyone because his mother would not want him to make the journey. Ben agrees but the next day, they find out that a Hurricane is coming. They get to leave school early so that they can prepare for the storm and Ben asks Jack to not go until after the storm. When the weather starts to turn bad, Ben tries to get in touch with Jack but he doesn’t answer. This is where the adventure begins because Ben decides he needs to stop Jack from going to see his dad until the hurricane passes. Ben knows that it would be a dangerous journey.
Ben and Noah pack a bag with rain gear and other supplies for their journey. Ben also gets Hero’s search and rescue gear. Ben, Noah, and Hero take-off in search of Jack and Scout. During their search, Ben and Noah run into a series of adventures and dangerous obstacles along the way. During the adventure, all three boys learn how dangerous the storm is and how acting on impulse can get you into trouble. One of the most memorable quotes in the book is “a crystal clear, perfect rainbow arcing across the sky like a beacon of hope to them all (p. 156).” This quote showed me that even though there are difficult times that there is a path you can follow to something better.
The book was a very fun read, especially if someone likes dogs and adventure stories. The story was adventurous with lots of cliffhangers. It kept you interested in the story and you just wanted to keep on reading. The other great part of the book was learning about search and rescue dogs and how they work during different scenarios. The book was a great read. I definitely recommend that people read this book. It would be especially interesting for people between the ages of 10 and 15 because it is an adventure of three young boys. But if you’re a dog lover, I think anybody at any age would enjoy reading this book. The book really appeals to people who love adventure stories and stories with dogs as one of the main characters.
The book I read was Hero it was about 3 boys ben, Jack, and noah. There was a hurricane coming and one of the boys Jack went to go see his father by walking to the next town over or something like that and he got stuck in a hurricane. On their journey home they discovered a boy scout troop in a cave waiting out the storm. The scout leader Marco or Marquis whatever his name was. Marco was hurt and he couldn't go with them Ben decided to make their way up the hill to try to get a signal on their phones.
On top of the hill the Boys Got a signal and Ben Called his Dad right away not even looking at any other notifications. Ben sent His location to his Dad. There were three helicopters that came and Ben turned and one of the boy scouts was gone.
Ben and Hero went looking for him and when they found him he was stuck in mud. When they got him out they asked him where he was going he said “I am going to get my Dad”(who is still in the cave) Ben went back to the cave with the boy scout to get his dad. Once they got back Ben's dad asked him where he was. Ben Said “ I was Getting Marco”. In the end they were alright.
Hero: Hurricane Rescue by Jennifer Li Shotz is about a boy named Jack and his dog, Scout. When a hurricane hits him and his family's city, Scout and Jack get lost in the city. Hero the hurricane rescue dog comes to save the day to try to get Scout and Jack back together with his family before it's too late.
My opinion on this book was that i thought it was a really good book a lot of the parts got me jumping up and trying my hardest to always get to the next page to see what was going to happen next! It also was a heartwarming book with the dog and the boy and was also somewhat funny which i love those comedies.
My recommendation for this book is for people who like action, dogs, laughs, and heartwarming moments all of these parts are in the story and it is awesome, every page you get one of these. moments in every page you turn.
Hero Hurricane Rescue is a story about a retired search-and-rescue dog that is able to find lost friends in the middle of a hurricane. Hero's owner Ben was at school and hears about this massive storm coming into town. His friend Jack and his dog Scout, did not want to get caught in the storm so they run and go missing. Hero is Ben's only hope in finding his best friend Jack and Scout. My favorite part of the book is when Hero encounters a wild alligator. Hero is a very brave and smart dog. He tricks the alligator into thinking that he is somewhere else with the help of Ben. Ben makes noise to make the alligator go to him while Hero escapes and jumps to safety. I wish my dog was that smart. Overall this book is very interesting and well written. You will constantly be on the edge of your seat because you never know what will happen next during the wild hurricane.
This book is full of exciting, perilous adventure. It is fast paced and never lulls. When a hurricane hits, Ben and Hero, his amazing dog, are put to the test saving not only their friends but their own lives. You do not have to read the first book in the series to follow the story, but it would add more background for both Hero, the dog, and the main characters. The one downside is that while focusing on the action, Shotz falls a bit short developing the characters. You don't really know much about Hero or the boys Ben, Jack and Noah. Readers who like action and animals will enjoy this series.
Exciting adventure story involving 3 middle-school age boys, 2 dogs and a mighty hurricane. Jack misses his father a great deal now that his parents are divorced. He and his mother have moved to Gulfport, Mississippi. Jack has decided to leave home with his dog, Scout, to visit his dad. Ben and Nathan, along with Ben's rescue dog, Hero, are supposed to be at Ben's house taking cover. Instead, worried about Jack, they set out, in spite of the impending storm, to find them. The tension builds and the action is non-stop. Readers will find it hard to take a break and put this book down. A terrific read for children in grades 3 - 7.
Decent junior fiction featuring a very clever canine. I got this out of a Little Free Library as Hurricane Ian approached, for some topical reading. Some quibbles: the kids in this book make either really stupid decisions or really perfect decisions (to get out of all the troubles they get into while a hurricane is blowing about). Just about every character is male, all the women and girls are gotten out of the way early, presumably because they would be too level-headed to allow all these shenanigans. Still, probably a thrilling book for a young reader.
Hero: Hurricane Rescue is the second of three books by Jennifer Li Shotz on a retired search in rescue dog. The second book is great, just like the first; it happens a few months after the first story takes place. In the story, a hurricane hits Ben's town, and he, Hero, and Noah go out in the storm to rescue their lost friend. This book is awesome is full of excitement and action. I recommend this book to anyone. I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I will admit, I purchased book of this series because of the picture of the dog on the cover, just too cute to resist. I enjoyed the story line enough to purchase book 2 and 3. Book 2 is a nice continuation of the original story and show's Ben, the lead characters, ongoing struggle between boyhood and adulthood. Great look at the love and loyalty a 4 legged family member can bring.
I had to remind myself that this was for kids. But even then, it's not an excuse for giant plot holes. Like the boy has a smart phone, but uses an old school compass and paper map. Even before he loses cell service.
Also, that's not how hurricanes in the Gulf work. Just no.
Just because it's for kids doesn't mean you should hand wave things.
My son (10) wanted me to read it because he enjoyed it a lot. It’s very cutesy and a lot of action for kiddos. I would say the age range would be 8-12. A good family book to read with your young kids. My only criticism is the inaccuracy of a hurricane event. You don’t just hide until a tree for a few minutes for “the worst of the storm”.
Hero the rescue dog was an excellent story of a fearless dog who's determination led others to follow his lead and become heroes as well. There is an excellent description of the terrors of an impending hurricane and it's destruction.
This was a feel good Young Adult book about a boy and his dog. The dog's loyalty and dedication in getting his people home is inspiring. Every young man dreams of having a dog like one in the books. This is that kind of book. It speaks to the dog lover in all of us.
the book was great and had a lot of suspense as a dog named hero and his owner ben go looking for bens friend jack and his dog scout who are running away to find their dad. the book is very detailed in its setting and the emotions the characters have during the hurricane.
I thought overall this was a great children's book. The story-line was easy to follow & while it's a little slower of a read for adults it's a perfect book for young readers. This book got my younger brother interested in reading other books & taught him about being responsible!
Hero: Hurricane Rescue was an amazing book, Hero, the black Labrador retriever was perfect, this is the only way the protagonist, Ben, could describe him. They realize Jack and his puppy Scout have gone missing so it is up to Ben and Hero to find them and get them back to safety.
I really enjoyed this book because it was very interesting. Every chapter had a lot of different obstacles that the characters went through. I would recommend this book to a friend.
Ben and his rescue dog Hero, have had enough adventures to last a lifetime, but apparently danger comes to them, when a hurricane threatens the safety of their small Florida town. Worse yet, is the fact that Ben's friend Jack and puppy Scout run away to go visit his father. Right when the hurricane hits. Now, Ben and his faithful K9 along with friend Noah have to face dangers, including alligators and raging flood waters to find Jack and Scout, and make it back home before Ben's dad finds out about their escapades! 4 stars for a book that'll keep younger readers on the edge-of-their seats, worrying about their favorite K9, and his brave human.
This was one of the best dog books i have ever read. All of the characters are really good. The book was action packed with a twist and danger at every turn. Definitely a must read book.
