Annabella Beaufort, cousin to the Queen Consort of Scotland, visits court in Edinburgh upon the queen’s urging. She has little interest in this wild and rugged land and is pleasantly surprised to find Linlithgow Palace and King James’ court quite refined. An attack on Edinburgh Castle by a savage Highlander results in her capture. This flaxen haired giant is like nothing she’s encountered before, but her fear of him quickly turns to lust and she prays he will not also claim her heart.
Son of the great Alexander MacDonald, beloved Lord of the Isles, Angus MacDonald refuses to bend to King James’ tyrannical rule. After his father is imprisoned, he becomes acting chief. Unlike his father and his schemes, Angus will attack and bring this king to his knees. His attempt to release his father is thwarted and instead he abducts the Queen’s cousin. His desire for her is intense and immediate, despite her flawed Sassenach ways. But he must keep her at arm’s length regardless of the raging passion she evokes in him. She is his pawn—his prisoner—and he must always remember that.
Though they fight on opposite sides of the battle for power over Scotland, Angus and Annabella discover a fire that will not be ignored or denied. Will their loyalties to their families tear them apart? If he sets her free, will she return to him? Or will she in turn imprison his heart for all eternity?
Kate Robbins writes historical romance novels out of pure escapism and a love for all things Scottish, not to mention a life-long enjoyment of reading romance.
Kate loves the research process and delving into secondary sources in order to blend authentic historical fact into her stories. She has travelled to Scotland twice and visited the sites described in her Highland Chiefs series.
Her debut award winning novel, Bound to the Highlander, is the first of five books set in the early fifteenth century during the reign of James Stewart, first of his name.
Kate is the pen name of Debbie Robbins who lives in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.
Prisoner of the Highlander by Kate Robbins is a truly remarkable romance novel centered in Scotland! Annabella Beaufort and Alexander MacDonald find themselves in a very interesting situation. Alexander has kidnapped Annabelle and is keeping her captive so he can try to get his Father back. His Father, a great King and leader, has been taken by Annabella's cousin's husband (who is also royalty). The Highlanders keep Annabella captive, but maybe... just maybe... there's a spark between Alexander and Annabella.
Call me crazy, but these Stockholm syndrome stories seem to be this strange trope I actually enjoy! I don't know why I find these stories seductive, because it can be downright weird. Luckily, Kate has made this story not feel creepy (like it could of) but seductive instead! I found myself hooked to every word and I could barely put it down. I ended up binging the final 3/4 of the book because I really needed to know what happened to the lovebirds Annabella and Alexander!
I didn't need to read any previous novels in this series to understand the story. Honestly, I felt like this was a standalone - but I'm sure there's a good backstory hidden somewhere. Either way, it's an easy story to jump into and as a reader, you won't be confused in the slightest! That being said, I absolutely want to continue reading this series! Kate's a marvelous romance writer, and I love a good Scottish tale!
This novel has some erotic scenes in it, so it's not for the faint of heart. The sex scenes alone make this an adult novel. So, reader beware! If you're looking for a soft, conservative novel then you're looking in the wrong place. The sex was hot, intense and breaks a few of the traditional rules back in the day.
I'd absolutely recommend this book if you love romance, a splash of erotica, or Highlander and similar stories. It's a great addition to your library!
Five out of five stars!

I loved this story! There was never a dull moment between Angus MacDonald and Annabella Beaufort. She is the Cousin of the Queen of Scots and he is the son of the imprisoned Laird of the Isles.
His father has been imprisoned several years and he has not given up trying to free him. On one of his attempts to free his father he comes across a beautiful Woman and a very pregnant Queen. He has to think quickly and concocts a plan to ensure the Queen and her incoming baby come to no harm, so he decides to kidnap her cousin. He realizes what a hellion she is though.
These two clash, ignite each other's dormate passion, and learn to trust one another (albeit late..., but that is what is great about the story).
Annabella Beaufort and her cousin the Queen are in Edingburgh Castle when it is under attack by highlanders, in particular, Angus MacDonald who is trying to secure the freedom of his Laird, his father who was taken prisoner by the King. The queen is heavily pregnant and possibly due to the attack goes Into labour. Annabelle seeing Angus takes him to being one of the Kings guards and orders him to get a carriage as the queen wishes to get away from the castle. Being impulsive and seeing a chance, Angus secures a carriage and takes the queen and Annabella towards the palace only to stop halfway there and fakes one of the horses to be lame and so takes Annabella to fetch some help. Only he takes her prisoner instead to exchange her for his father.
Things obviously don't go to plan and what starts off hostile turns into a love that they can't accept, or can they.
Read the book to find out as there is more to it than meets the eye. I couldn't stop turning the pages, it was that good. I think you'll enjoy it, I know I did.
She’s feisty and he seems almost curt. Their circumstances bring them together, but fate holds them there. They are both a bit stubborn and could use more communication. Looking forward to more of these men and women!
Fun Highland romance with appealing characters and a nice plot. I found this novel enjoyable and entertaining. Lots of passion, adventure and political intrigue.
Kate Robbins, has a wonderful way to bring her storytelling to the pages of her novels. The Highland Chiefs series is worth the addition into anyone's library whom enjoys romance, damsels in distress, hunky highland man whom have swag to their step and who swing large claymore. These are the novel that hold a story to tell and keeps you up at night trying to finish . . . before dawn.
