If you’re looking for beauty and fashion advice, I think this would be a great book for you. Candis has had to figure all this stuff out on her own as she navigates an unfamiliar body in female form. Most of us that have grown up as girls are bombarded with the “correct” makeup, hairstyles, and clothing for their shape, face, etc. I did pick up a few pointers from Candis, given that she wasn’t so hard-set on things she had learned as a kid, like a lot of us. She was freer to experiment and really find what worked for her.
I think the problem for me is that I was hoping for more autobiographical content on Candis herself, which is probably my mistake. I just wanted to hear more about how Candis got from where to was, to where she is now. But, again, if you’re looking for some useful hair and makeup tips, I think this is a great book. She talks about all different styles and how and why they work with certain types of features and shapes. I don’t really style my hair (I keep it exceptionally short), and I never wear make-up, so a lot of this didn’t really interest me, and there was much more of that to this book than anything else. So, I ended up finding myself skimming a lot.
I would recommend this book, but only if you know what you’re looking for so that you can get you want out of it.

I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for a review. I really enjoyed this! It felt like I was receiving personal advice from a friend the whole way through. Hi Gorgeous! is educational, but also somewhat of an autobiography. I also enjoyed the beautiful photographs throughout the book. If you're looking for a confidence booster or to learn more about beauty and style, this book is for you!
Glamorous transgender actress Candis Cayne believes beauty and confidence come from within. Her upbeat and empowering self-help guide, HI GORGEOUS! , begins by helping readers dismantle their insecurities (fed by a body-shaming media) and build up their self-confidence. "If you don't believe you're beautiful or even worthy of beauty in the first place, you're never going to experience the absolute joy that comes from living a life of radiance, happiness, and especially freedom," writes Cayne. Mixed into these opening chapters are Cayne's memories of growing up effeminate in Hawaii. "I knew in my heart and soul that I was born to be a woman," she writes. "These feelings, though, confused and angered people, so growing up was not always easy."
Cayne details how inner beauty can be achieved through yoga, visualization, exercise, meditation and diet. Steps toward outer radiance include skin care, makeup tips, hair care, clothing for every body type, jewelry/accessories and essentials for a complete wardrobe. The final chapters offer advice for online dating and for projecting confidence at job interviews.
HI GORGEOUS! is welcoming and useful to trans and cis readers alike, with the beauty and makeup sections striving toward Cayne's classic elegance. Cayne and coauthor Katina Z. Jones's energetic and encouraging advice is complemented by Frances Soo Ping Chow's fun book design and Kourosh Sotoodeh's stunning photos. This is a thoughtful, generous and helpful guide that offers solid steps to embracing and showcasing your inner and outer beauty.
Trans actress Candis Cayne's guide to achieving inner and outer beauty is upbeat, empowering and beautifully designed and illustrated.
Such an easy read- positive, light, and happy. I work with all sorts of patients- old, young, all sexual orientations, various races and creeds. I occasionally work with patients who are transgender. I found this book and thought it would be a good read to increase understanding. Honestly, I found the advice pertaining to me more than I expected. I found myself searching for suggested products on Amazon and placing them in my cart. We all deserve to be loved. We all should love our bodies. This book is meant for all. It was like a big literary big.
the "biography memoir" tag is super misleading. i didn't know anything about candis going in to this book, and having read this, i still know nothing about her
if you've read a single self-help book for women written in the last 20 years, you've already read this one. i mean even if you've read a single cosmo article in the last 20 years... you've already read this book.
This book wasn’t exactly what I thought that it would be, it was more of a guide on how to do hair, make up and to live your life as fab as possible, but I did like it a lot! It really showed Candis’ personality and how she has overcome so much!
Although I completely understand the purpose of this book, I feel that for someone who doesn't truly struggle with body/beauty issues, it misses the mark. I can empathize, yes, and I can understand why people, man or woman, SHOULD read this book, however, for me, it felt as though I was being told to love myself and value myself when I already do that. The entire book, which I admittedly had to skim, is about staying true to yourself and not letting anyone rain on your parade or dull your sparkle.
