This book was a cute and fast read. I absolutely love the Disney Channel movies Descendants and Descendants 2, and to a lesser extent, I also enjoy Wicked World. This book was more in line with Wicked World as CJ has never appeared in the movies. The book follows CJ, daughter of Captain Hook as she plays pranks on the students of Auradon Prep while trying to solve the mystery of a treasure map she found in her father's study. I loved her friendship with Freddie (daughter of Dr. Facilier) and also her growth through the book. And it was a fun little adventure story. If you're a fan of Descendants and want a little something extra related to them, I recommend checking it out.

Thanks Katie for sending this to me!

Review:

Protagonist: CJ Hook as found a way off the Isle of the Lost, she stows away on a spell cast by the genie Jordan and is hiding out in her best friend Freddie's dorm room. She doesn't plan on going to Auradon Prep, however, no, CJ has much more adventurous plans in mind. Ever since she was young CJ has dreamed of following a map she found in her the hold of her father's ship, a map that just may be magical, but until now she didn't have any access to magic. It was really interesting to read from a real VK's perspective in this series. I mean, in the novels written by Melissa De La Cruz, we see from the original Auradon VK's perspectives, but they're either not in Auradon yet, like with the first installment, or they had been reformed though still struggled with their dark sides a little. However, CJ is a roguish riot, sneaking around Auradon Prep as to not be discovered and sent back to the Isle, or threatening to kidnap people and force them to do what she wants on her treasure chase. She does have a good bit of character development in this story, though not exactly in the way I was assuming when I cracked this book open.

World Building: So if you read my review of Rise of the Isle of the Lost by Melissa De La Cruz, I mentioned how I was getting tired of constantly going back to the Isle without really getting to see the rest of Auradon, however, this story has very little Isle, but a good chunk of Auradon to explore. There's quite a bit of backtracking in this story as the author wrote in little callouts to the Descendants movie as well as the Wicked World shorts, but seeing it from a different perspective kept those moments from getting boring. However, once this story gets caught up with the end of the first season of the Wicked World shorts, things really spring into high gear and it sees our protagonist race across Auradon in hopes of laying her hands on this amazing treasure she's dreamed about since she was little. It was a lot of fun getting to see more of this world and while I had braced myself for this feeling like it was written for a Middle-Grade audience like the De La Cruz sometimes do, or even written for a younger audience than that, it never happened. I liked how reading this short adventure felt like it was written for fans of the series, no matter what age they might be.

Predictability: So, while I never felt talked down to in the writing and the world building of this story, the plot of the story was rather predictable. Well, sort of. See, this isn't a long story and so the author only has so many pages to get from point A to point B and so there's not a lot of time to set up big twists and turns. So the adventure, while very enjoyable was a tad predictable. That being said though, there were still a few times where, given CJ's wild card personality, I wasn't quite sure where the story would take me.

Ending: I don't know what to say about this ending. I mean it's a very short story, very quick to fly through in one sitting and while the final climax of the story was really fun and we got to see a lot of CJ's character development come to light, as she faced her final hurdle toward the treasure, there wasn't as big of an ending to this story as there is in something like the other novels, or even the movie. However, there is a pretty great cooldown period where we learn of CJ's fate going forward and a bit of a tease at what's to come next in the School of Secrets series. I was pretty surprised where things ended up and while I'm sad that CJ's not going to be the main protagonist for the whole series I'm excited to read more stories in this world.

Rating:

Like I said in my review, I was bracing myself and dragging my heels to read this story since I expected it to either be geared toward an MG or younger audience or for it to be unbelievably cheesy. It wasn't though, there's a little bit of cheesy-ness in the story but overall it was a fun and exciting adventure and I'm kind of stoked to read the other School of Secrets books and have more adventures in this world.

I am very confused with the way Jessica Brody and Disney have given CJ, the daughter of Captain Hook, her departure off the Isle. If you watch the first movie, it is a point made that magic is not possible there (it's mentioned in the prologue as well), and yet CJ and her friend, Freddie (The daughter of Dr. Facilier) are magically transported to Auradon Prep thanks to a puff of smoke from a magic lamp that was on the isle. Its even reiterated on pg 15 that there is no magic on the isle.

By pg 38, I began wondering if the idea for creating this story was to basically take the first movie, remove the four main characters, and replace them with just CJ and Freddie; CJ as Mal's replacement, and Freddie as some sort of replacement for Evie.... and have the same places in it, but change what's happening. It just feels like some of the things are the same as the first movie.

Also by pg 38, there was a convo between Mal, Evie, Freddie, and Audrey (Queen Aurora's daughter), but it was brief. It honestly read like someone was recounting stuff they did....

On pg 52, CJ is in the museum and is able to lift a stone off of a display, and on pg 53, she was able to take a key that was beneath the stone... but but but... in the movie, Jay was thrown backwards when he tried to do the very same thing with the fairy Godmother's wand.... so.... I'm confused??? Was this a less protected display, or??

Pg 67, they're heading to the enchanted lake.... they did that in...the movie, too.... just for another reason.
On pg 69, (the Neon Lights Ball) it says that Frankie's new friends found out they'd been hiding CJ in her room the whole time, but doesn't mention any kind of response....like say...reporting it to Fairy Godmother???

Ok... second star to the right, and straight on till morning. In the sky... That's how Peter Pan got Wendy and her siblings to Neverland. So, why, on page 139 does CJ only have to row her boat North of the harbor? I'm still confused.

Well, it definitely was not what I was expecting or initially hoping for. It was a treasure hunt outside of the school. I was kind of hoping for a story that took place inside the school, but maybe Brody and Disney thought that would be a little too Harry Potter-y? It sure seems that way.

At the beginning of this story, it states that CJ and Frankie found that magic lamp and wished themselves to Auradon Prep (or just to Auradon?), and that Frankie was allowed to enroll, but it is never specified how King Ben knew Frankie was there, not that CJ was. It also is never specified what King Ben's thought process was on her arrival. Was Frankie scheduled to arrive anyway, so he just allowed it earlier than planned? Was this planned at all? Or did he just say, 'Why the heck not?'

.... The story as a whole isn't horrible... It almost reads like a fan fic. I'm gonna give this 2 stars.

I’m starting to feel like I understand these books too well! Each one has a message and this one is no different!

CJ is the daughter of Captain Hook. Like him, she dreams of buried treasure and adventure. Her bestie was Freddie, the daughter of Dr Facilier. This book needs you to watch the animated series were I had to watch some to understand.

When Freddie is magically transported to Auradon by Jordan, CJ is also transported. In Auradon, CJ is playing pranks on people and constantly getting herself nearly caught. CJ then finds a magical map which has treasure at the end of it.

When CJ asks Freddie for help, she agrees. However, after the Neon Lights Ball (the animated series is needed), Freddie and CJ are not the most popular. Freddie really wants to continue with her singing career in Auradon, and she is worried CJ will ruin that. However, she agrees to go ahead.

They take a trip to a fairy’s shop to try and get more of the map uncovered. Later, Freddie is caught by Audrey and is worried that she’ll get sent back to the island.

In the end, CJ and Freddie find the treasure (after a lot of hardcore action). CJ blames herself so that Freddie can stay at Auradon Prep and CJ goes to find more treasure.

Similar to the others in the series, I felt the story was very generic. However, I feel the characters were more likeable as neither of them were in the movies.

3/5 Stars

Quick Note: Only two more to go! CJ was really good so I hope she returns!

I enjoy spending time in the Descendants world. These little stories are similar time frame to Wicked World (this one happening parallel to the show). CJ's name makes sense now (Captain James).

CJ’s Treasure Chase (Updated)
Because of Jordan and her magic lamp (the genie’s daughter), CJ (daughter of Captain Hook) and Freddie (daughter of Dr. Faciler) are transported to Auradon Prep. With Freddie’s “velvet voice” she talked King Ben into letting her enroll. C.J has been hiding out in Freddie’s room temporarily. She won’t be sticking around. While settling in their dorm room, Freddie asks CJ what their doing there. CJ takes her time answering and tells Freddie *she’s* there to be a student and her well.. she shouldn’t worry her pretty little head about that.

Freddie suggests that whatever it is she’s planning, could she make sure they don’t get caught this time. She doesn’t want to be kicked out before they can do some real damage. CJ worries that Freddie’s starting to like this place already and she’ll lose her just like Mal and Evie. She has to set her plan into motion and she doesn’t have much time.

When Freddie leaves the room to go to lunch, CJ takes the map from her pocket that she stole from her dad. She’s been gazing at this map every since she was a little girl and somehow, she always knew that when she got to Auradon the map’s magic would unlock and point her to a great treasure. CJ however, still is shocked when a section of the map that wasn’t there before shows up. Still, it isn’t the complete map. A lot of it is still empty. In frustration, she tries to get something else to show up. Then she sees words that say.

“In this historic site of the learned lies a special stone unturned. Find it among the tulips so bold ad your future will shine bright with gold.” CJ knows the treasure will be enough to buy her a ship of her own. If only she had a compass like her dad’s. It was gold with a diamond but the Beast took it along with the rest of the villain’s most prized possessions.

CJ sneaks around Auradon Prep for some days but realizes princesses only seem to talk about parties and what to wear to the parties. It also loses it’s appeal because everyone is so trusting. She thinks she’s on to something when she hears tulips mentioned in a conversation but it’s just the girls planning the Neon Light Ball and they’re arguing about what flowers to have. They start to talk about music and Freddie offers to sing, but Audrey cuts her off and says Lonnie will be djing. CJ fumes and then gets back at her by gluing her locker shut. CJ also puts a dead fish in her locker that flops down on Audrey’s head.

Ater this tho, she gets back to business. Only she doesn’t find anything. Freddie offers her help and CJ realizes it can’t hurt. So, she asks her to ask around about tulips or where to find a stone unturned. Freddie asks why and CJ says she’s become something of a botanist scholar but Freddie knows this isn’t true. She says she doesn’t need to ask around she already knows where the tulip so bold and the stone unturned are. She says she’ll tell her if she’ll tell her what she’s up to. Only CJ can’t get the words out. Then she goes off to eat some cream puffs and go to music class which CJ thinks is way too AK. If Freddie won’t tell her she thinks she’ll just have to do some breaking and entering.

CJ sneaks out one night and into Evie and Mal’s room. She tries Evie’s magic mirror but soon sees that it doesn’t work for her. She then sees Mal’s diary and reads about how they tried to steal the wand from the Museum of Cultural History and smiles. Inspired by Jane’s Knight mascot costume at the tourney practice, CJ decides she’ll use the costume to sneak into the museum. CJ decides the best time to steal the costume in the morning of the Neon Lights Ball. She steals the costume and leaves Mal’s bracelet behind. She has to wear the suit because she can’t carry it. Freddie catches her and says whatever she’s doing she wants in.

CJ says no way. Freddie says she’ll tell. CJ says she won’t because then she’ll have to tell that she’s been hiding her and then she’ll get kicked out. CJ tells her she’s a pirate and she doesn’t really need a sidekick. In the Golden Afternoon Flowerbed she finds a plaque that says Little Bread and Butterflies Kiss the Tulips. Underneath a stone is a gold key.

There are words on the stone Nothing Is Carved in Stone (which is absurd because the words are carved in stone). Then she sees the map is changing (after she says the words). The map fills in a little more but then it stops. Still not complete. She needs to go to a lake on the map for the next clue. CJ finally drops her pride and asks Freddie to help her. Well rather manipulate her by telling her she’s turning into an AK. Freddie says she’ll help but she’s not CJ’s Smee. To which CJ says their partners.

Freddie and CJ reach the Enchanted Lake. The map doesn’t do anything. They take a sip from the Lake. It’s good but still nothing happens. Freddie, suggest they need to actually get in the water. So, they jump in. Freddie accidently gets water on the map and the next section starts to reveal itself but this time its like someone’s splatter painting with ink. It shows a town called “Briars Hollow”. Freddie learned about it from Audrey. This town was where BriarRose lived while she was hiding from Maleficent and it’s now inhabited by fairies. For the next clue it says they need to find a fairy to shrink the map.

CJ and Freddie decide to pay a fairy beauty shop as students who need help or they’ll fail. They convince one of the fairies but then find themselves shrunk. CJ thinks it’s the fairy (Peony’s) fault. At this size she can see more dots on the map and there’s another section called South Riding and a castle called Towering Heights. (When magic shrinks from big to small you’ll see the final clue of all). CJ shows Freddie the new section says HOOKS BAY and stops by a small island marked with a skull.

The island is SKULL ROCK. Her fathers told CJ of it many times. Peony finally notices she’s turned them small and turns them back. They decide they need to get a boat to get to Skull Island but before they do they see Audrey coming toward them. Not far from her there’s a truck. Freddie says they gotta get out of there. Audrey could tell on them and get them expelled. The truck that’s hiding them is about to move. They run to the truck and CJ hops inside. She calls for Freddie who seems to be frozen. Audrey is now staring at them trying to place them. She then recognizes Freddie and asks her why isn’t she at school.

She tells her she can tell Headmistress and get her in serious trouble. This snaps Freddie out of it and she starts to run after the truck (that’s now gone). CJ wraps a strap around her wrist, jumps out the truck, and grabs Freddie and the strap snaps them back. CJ asks her why she didn’t move. Freddie confesses she doesn’t want to leave AP. She likes it there. She says they sing there and they see her than more than Dr. Faciliar’s daughter. CJ says she’s lying to herself if she thinks they care about her. She says that’s why they got off the island so they could have their own adventure.

Freddie says it was never her adventure and after they’re done, she’s going back to AP. CJ says why wait. Just go now. Freddie tells her she’s becoming like her father who pushed everyone away because he was so obsessed with Peter Pan. The truck stopped. The driver discovers them and ask what they’re doing back there. CJ tells him she was just leaving. She has a boat to catch. On her way to the island, she realizes all her life she thought she needed a boat and gold but she and Freddie have had adventure after adventure. Freddie was her true partner. So, she turns the boat around. This adventure is for the both of them.

Only Freddie came back and is the Jazz Club. They make up, admit they missed each other, and they’ve both have fun. When they reach Skull Rock, it’s just as CJ’s father described it. There’s a ladder leading up and CJ decides she needs to go at it alone. Inside (the rock?) there’s a series of hooks that CJ has to swing across. She does this with ease but while she is she hears the tick tock of the crocodile, realizes it must smell her blood, misses one of the hooks, and starts to fall into the ravine below. But she’s jerked up and sees the last hook caught on her pirate coat. But then her coat starts to rip. She’s able to swing herself up onto a ledge. CJ sees a deep, dark, pit and discovers it’s the other eye of the skull. She sees her treasure box inside but it’s surrounded by crocodiles.

CJ decides she’s come to far. She ties a rope around her ankle, swings upside down, and tries to open the chest. Only it’s locked. She remembers the keys and is able to open the chest. There’s only one thing in the chest but before she knows it the crocodiles wake up. Then the light from her match goes out. Even tho the rope frays (from the crocodiles), CJ uses the hook stuck in her coat and pulls herself up from the ledge (pit).

CJ looks for Freddie and sees that she has two ways out to swing back across the hooks or to dive into the water. It’s quite a drop but Freddie says she’ll be right there with the boat. Cj’s coat starts to drag her down and she starts to sink, but then she feels Freddie pulling her up into the boat. Because she’s still holding the hook, Freddie thinks she wound up like her dad. CJ says she almost did. She shows Freddie her dad’s compass. Freddie says oh kaaay. We came all the way here for *that*. Even tho CJ has the same reaction at first, now that she’s had some time to think about it this is way more valuable than a chest full of jewels.

CJ says she doesn’t know if she’ll sell it. She use to think it was the ship that made the pirate but maybe it’s the compass. On the compass are the letters CJH. CJ thinks its Captain James Hook but Freddie says now its CJ Hook. When they get back, Evie and Mal are in their room. They tell them Audrey said she saw them at “Briars Hollow”. CJ says it was her fault. She kidnapped Freddie (old habits). Mal tells CJ she doesn’t trust her and she thanks her and says it’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to her. Mal tells her she hope she’s not sticking around and CJ says she can’t. She’s got other plans.

Freddie says she can stay but CJ says she’s really not cut out for dorm life. Besides her next adventure waits her. As she leaves, Freddie says mine too.

My Thoughts:
This was cute! It actually reminded me of a good memory. My aunt used to play this game with me. In a very similar way to CJ's hunt, my aunt would give me an initial clue that would take me to somewhere in the house. At that spot was another clue. At the next spot was another clue. Until you got to the final clue and there would be "treasure" like candy or a toy or something. CJ was a pretty, decent, character. She was what I expected a pirate's kid to be like. And I liked the details like her pirate's coat, ruffled shirt, boots, and braid in her hair. She was also very clever and cunning. And I liked that she was a VK true and through. I don't really like when VK's get soft and switch up, so I understood CJS annoyance with Mal and Evie. Although people do change. Aren't I WELL aware of that? Yet, CJ stayed true to her roots and I could appreciate that. I thought the compass was a great treasure to find! It held sentimentality and I hope she keeps that and doesn't sell it. It's worth more than a flashy ship. That'll probably come on its own someday. But if she gives away a solid, gold, compass that's an heirloom, she's gonna be kicking herself. Great message that friendship is the greatest treasure you can find! Although CJ still goes after the treasure, she realizes that she can't do it without Freddie. And I REALLY wanted one of those beignets!

Intermediate Juvenile Fantasy Novel
Grade 3-6
CJ’s Treasure Chase (School of Secrets) is about an antagonistic girl named CJ the daughter of Captain Hook a crude conning man. CJ is on an assignment to find the pirates hidden treasure on an old map left behind from her dad. Her friend Freddie has plans to attend Auradon Prep where the treasure is hidden. Freddie has a velvet soft voice that hypnotized anyone she tries to possess. When Freddie was transported by a puff of cotton pink smoke into a genie CJ tagged along. CJ used every minute to solve the map clues each clue unveiled the next step.

The novel bounces back and forth about the boarding school experience, friendships, sneaking around and taking some insane risk to find the treasure. All though out the story CJ makes reference to her dad’s harsh and treacherous ways she did not influence Freddie to tag along with her on the treasure hunt. Freddie wanted a part of the adventure so she threatened CJ by telling her secret of hiding in her dorm room. CJ agreed because she did not want Freddie to mess up her opportunity to find the treasure and free room and board.

This led them into a deep adventure using the maps magical powers, on a trail that was uncovered through ingenious thinking. The story had suspense and humor, but the fantasy is released in many different turns from Evie’s magic mirror not luck, and sneaking into Auradon’s Museum of Culture History seeking tulips to unveil a part of a clue. Each clue is neatly disguised so the CJ and her friends along the way do not find the gems, but they do.

I liked the characters in this book. CJ and her best friend Freddie were funny and adventurous. The friendship between CJ and Freddie felt true. While I liked the characters, the story was a little predictable. The clue giving map has been in many books. It was little light and kiddish and if it had gone a little darker, since they are kids of villains, I think I would have liked it more. There was a lot of action in this book but it didn’t have big character emotions. I think it would be good for younger readers. I would recommend it to a friend’s younger sister but not the best fit for an eight grade guy.

This is not a typical book that I read and I understand that it is geared towards younger readers. I read this mostly to analyze Jessica Brody's use of the 3 act structure that she preaches in Save the Cat! Writes a Novel. This book was okay and I can see the parts of the 3 act structure in it as well as how the main character's character arc played out. It is a simplistic and straightforward book, but I do think that the black/white aspects of the book are typical of this younger middle grade genre.

This book was okay I would have liked it more maybe 3 years ago but reading drives my imagination crazy which helps with animation, comics, and drawing which will help me getting a job but looking from a different angle it was pretty good seeing how the children of Disney Princesses and Villains act.

It's the first book to finish reading EVER! I would recommend this to the kids and tweens who would want to start reading for fun. It would make more sense if you have watched the descendants movie. It was such a quick and fun read. All the adventures and comedy and stuff! It becomes more adventurous when you get to the middle of the book. Overall, I give this book a 4.6/5

This book was kind of like a mystery. Spoiler Alert: So the mystery to me was if CJ was going to survive and make it out or if she was going to die from the alligators. If you like Descendants,I think that you would really like this book. Enjoy!!!!

Decent. My kids enjoyed, but definitely plot holes regarding the movies... Captain Hook has a son who works with Uma. He was never mentioned. Also, there were some other bits that made em think they just kinda forced this story. However, still entertaining to my kids.
