I really loved the bbTA!Jack story, and his picnic with Jackie Tyler and fail date with Alonso were fun! (though now I need a HAPPY date with Alonso pls!!!). Not sure how I feel about the first story, it was kinda creepy and then it was over. Super nice to hear Barrowman's voice though!

(The Year After I Died).

THE CAWPILE OF 'THE LIVES OF CAPTAIN JACK'

John Barrowman slips back into the role of Jack seamlessly, putting on a sulking performance as the abandoned former Time Agent. He appears very little in the first half of the story, which puts focus on the naively curious Silo Crook and the endlessly annoying Malfi Pryn = 7.
----
Everybody's favourite mother Jackie Tyler returns and she's just as awkward and cool as before. She doesn't get very well along with Captain Jack but is forced to work with him to avert the alien threat. Together, they make for the only people appearing in this story, and it gets quite tedious to listen to just the two of them all the time = 5.
----
John Barrowman and Russell Tovey work very well together, and it's great to hear Alonso deal with the events of Voyage of the Damned while working together with Jack on a very different kind of date. Mother Nothing makes for a memorable and pretty psychotic villain (similar to the Joker in voice and composure; I can't believe the character is voiced by the one and only Katy Manning!). The supporting characters are drowned under the stars of the story, but help to flesh out the script = 6.
----
Month 25 is Jack at his best, surrounded by boring Time Agents and being all sassy and confident. It's interesting to see Jack in what was originally his natural habitat. He feels like an action movie star here, fleeing from his peers just because he's become too curious about his past. And he has a very sexy real name = 8.

The dystopian Earth feels distant and dead, much like the inhabited world of Utopia. At the same time, things on the space station feel strange off and Jack's situation comes across as dire. The minor uprising is pretty well handled and creates some excitement for the latter half of the story.
I love the western-influenced music, it's amazing = 6.
----
This story never stops being confusing, stiff and messy; it undercuts the humour, the action and the potential tension. The actions scenes don't work, the dialogue between Jack and Jackie feels very stiff and the setting doesn't leap off the page = 3.
---
While the atmosphere of chaos and destruction comes across very well, often drawing parallels to Voyage of the Damned, this story feels like wasted potential in terms of dealing with the relationship between Jack and Alonso. The characters spend large parts of the story apart from each other, so there's no proper time to develop anything = 5.
---
A sassy and confident Jack and a simple central mystery form a funny, fascinating and engaging atmosphere that carries the story forward. Hearing Jack trying to solve the mystery of his missing past while avoiding the Time Agents chasing after him is well-written and exciting. Everything builds up towards a pretty disappointing finale = 7.

Guy Adams knows his Captain Jack, writing him much the same way we know him from TV. He struggles a bit to depict believable action but counters that with some great dialogue moments = 6.
----
James Goss is a good writer, but his approach to Wednesdays For Beginners doesn't work. He's written a Jackie Tyler monologue, which is all over the place and doesn't believably convey what is going on around her = 4.
----
James Goss' second story is a whole lot more engaging and character-driven, but since the story never allows Jack and Alonso to properly talk emotions, many of the flirts they throw at each other feel forced = 6.
----
Month 25 sees Guy Adams write a sassy, younger Jack very convincingly while putting enough material in the script to flesh out the Time Agency somewhat. This is also the only story to truly allow Jack to shine as the real star while leaving the other characters in supporting roles = 7.

Fascinatingly, Big Finish seeks to bridge the gap between Captain Jack's appearances in Series One and Series Three of Doctor Who, by exploring what happened after The Parting of the Ways, when Jack was left behind in the Game Station. It's these kinds of stories that flesh out the characters and the universe we know and love very well. At the same time, this is not simply Jack's story; it's just as much the story of Silo Crook and the remains of the Earth after the Battle of the Game Station. Despite the lively setting the main plot itself is pretty thin and doesn't seem to have much point beyond filling in the gaps left by the TV show = 6.
----
Wednesdays For Beginners is another story very light on the protagonist of the set. This is, in fact, a Jackie Tyler monologue. Big parts of the story centre around Jackie walking around talking to herself and narrating absolutely everything she sees. It's confusing, it's difficult to follow and it's not very interesting. When Jack gets involved and the alien threat is introduced, things get marginally better. The story still struggles to depict the things going on in a way that works in audio format. This story lacks a coherent plot or any hooks to keep the listener engaged = 4.
----
One Enchanted Evening is a lovely little story, letting us know how the date set-up by the Doctor in The End of Time went. It's a combination of an alien invasion plot and a romantic comedy of sorts, with plenty of Doctor Who stuff wrapped around the package. This is the most traditional story on this first set, with powerful alien threats and some fine human drama at the centre. The resolution and fallout end up being slightly disappointing, however, since there was a lot of potential as to where one could have taken the characters = 5.
----
In many ways, Month 25 is the most interesting story on the set, since it sheds some light on the ambiguous Time Agency and Captain Jack's past. It also becomes a rather fascinating mystery around two missing years of Jack's life. The story is a fine mix of action, mystery and character drama, fleshing out Jack's past while setting tracks for his future = 6.

Listeners begin their journey through the Lives of Captain Jack expecting to gets some more Jack Harkness action, and they will be surprised to get som little of that in the first story. The Year After I Died is a look into humanity coping with the destruction of their planet and it keeps the listener engaged by fleshing out this new situation and the characters involved fairly well. Despite the growing tension towards the end, the story never lifts off properly = 7.
----
After a pretty thorny beginning, including a lengthy monologue with Jackie Tyler narrating (one of the worst scenes Big Finish have ever written), the story turns up the volume on action and tension as Jackie gets involved in some alien shenanigans with Captain Jack. Those parts are a mess of alien sounds, screaming and other noises, making the action tough to enjoy. I lost interest after around 40 minutes, after which everything just turned for the worse = 3.
----
Built around two interesting characters and the overly drawn-out potential love story between them, the story keeps the listener engaged only because they want to find out exactly how everything is going to end. It has a couple of sweet character moments but other than that the story flows by with very little to chew on = 6.
----
This is the most fast-paced and exciting of the stories on the set, allowing listeners to understand Jack's past better while also telling an exciting story. The engaging mystery keeps the listener on the edge of their seats = 8.

The opening story of the set is a fine continuation of Jack's story after Series One of Doctor Who but doesn't quite hit the high marks on all areas. It's a pretty simple story with very little point to it, but great performances and interesting premise keep it going = 6.
----
Wednesdays For Beginners is not the way to wrote a Big Finish troy, The Jackie and Jack pairing doesn't work, the action is confusing and the dialogue is far from natural. The story is all over the place and it seems like it doesn't know what it wants to achieve = 2.
----
While One Enchanted Evening is arguably the strongest story of the set, it feels like wasted potential, not going all-in on the date idea and losing steam before the end = 5.
----
Monty 25 works thanks to a likeable Jack and an engaging central mystery and also helps to flesh out the character. Its story is close to the usual Big Finish quality and gives me hope for the future sets = 8.

CAWPILE RATING: 5.79 / 10 = 3 stars

1) The Year After I Died - This story gives a glimpse of what happened to Jack after the events of the new Doctor Who Series One and Rose unwittingly gave him the unexpected curse (or gift depending on your perspective and point of view) that indirectly defines the rest of his appearances, and in which he begins to realize exactly what might have been done to him. Captain Jack is a favorite of mine and I’ve been eagerly waiting for these audio-dramas since I first heard of their existence. While I did enjoy this, I was disappointed that there was a huge chunk without Jack appearing (although the story moves at a good clip and it just makes his reappearance in the narrative all that much more dramatic). This story deals with the ways that the wealthy live off the lives and suffering of everyone else (something that an awful lot of people in the United States need to be a bit more aware of). Entertaining, and something that fans of Captain Jack will undoubtably enjoy.

2) Wednesdays for Beginners - This started off on the one point that I liked least about the first chapter, not enough Captain Jack. But then ... frell! Jackie & Jack have some outrageous chemistry! They are hysterical! The definition of CAMP!

3) One Enchanted Evening - What happens when you mash-up the films Die Hard (1988) and Trick (1999) with a splash of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and starring Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Midshipman Alonso Frame (Russell Tovey)? These two just want to spend a magical evening together, but everything, and everyone, seems destined to keep them apart, permanently. And it’s all on the first date. All coordinated and arranged by the Doctor? 5 out of 5 stars!

4) Month 25 - This time the narrative jumps back to the period before we first meet Jack. As a Time Agent our favorite hero loves to break the rules, unfortunately sometimes your past (or is it your future?) catches up with you. This one has some dark moments, but otherwise it’s still a lot of fun.

I would have liked to give this a 5-star rating, but I just can’t. The third story was definitely my favorite, but the first and the fourth are also quite good. Missed having a selection selection of bonus interviews too.

Ratings of individual episodes below.

The Year After I Died
Rating: 4 stars
Not quite 5 stars but fills an important gap in the history of Jack, showing how abandoned he felt after the Dalek attack and how he discovered he couldn’t die.

Wednesdays for Beginners
Rating: 5 stars
I will always love Jack and Jackie, they are hilarious together.

One Enchanted Evening
Rating: 3 stars
I love both Alonso and Jack, but think I expected more from this story-wise and it didn’t quite meet those expectations.

Month 25
Rating: 4 stars
It was interesting to see Jack as a Time Agent and this leads almost directly onto the The Empty Child, where we first meet him. This is very different to the Jack of later audio dramas, also got to learn his real name (as Jack Harkness is an alias).

A collection of four hour-long stories starring Jack Harkness, but not based around his time at Torchwood. Set at different points along his personal history, one of its strengths is showing how the character has been changed by the experiences he has had during the TV series; in effect, there's a different version of him in each episode here.

The Year After I Died – As the title indicates, this is set shortly after the events of The Parting of the Ways and notably, before Jack has discovered that his survival in that story wasn’t just a one-off event. In some ways, therefore, it’s a sequel to that story, taking place on an Earth still recovering from the Dalek attack. There’s a good look at a Jack still uncertain and cautious after his scrape with death, as well as a number of references to that story’s events and the future society depicted in it. The plot, however, is less strong, being fairly straightforward with an over-the-top villain whose utter ghastliness is a little too much to swallow. But, as an introduction to this series, it works well enough for what it’s trying to do. 3.5 stars.

Wednesdays for Beginners – The second story is much better and this is largely due to the fact that it has Jackie Tyler in it. It’s primarily told from her perspective, with her waking up one Wednesday morning to find that something is very wrong on the Powell Estate. The story itself has some fun ideas, as the actual nature of the problem and how it might be tackled become apparent. But mainly, it’s the interplay between the two leads that sparkles, with plenty of great lines that contrast Jackie’s down-to-Earth nature with Jack’s otherworldly experience. This makes it a real joy to listen to… although those who aren’t British might wonder why Jackie finds the aliens’ name so funny. 5 stars.

One Enchanted Evening - This time we get a sequel to Voyage of the Damned, following on directly from the brief scene with Jack meeting Alonso Frame in The End of Time. The pair's planned evening goes badly wrong when the space station they are on suffers a disaster and Alonso finds himself once again trying to get the few survivors to safety, despite the insecurity induced by his failure to save most of the passengers last time. There's plenty of flirting amidst the peril, some touches of humour, and a nice turn from the ship's engineer. But once again, it's let down by a ridiculously over-the-top villain that damages the story's credibility - although Katy Manning is clearly having great fun with the role. 3 stars.

Month 25 - While the previous stories have moved chronologically through Jack's life, this one jumps back to when he was still in the Time Agency. Which means that he's both mortal and still using his real name. It's a good portrayal of a younger Jack, still extremely cocky (something he notably isn't in the previous story) and more interested in having a good time than actually working for the Agency. The story is set almost entirely in his native time period, concerning a plot within the Agency itself, guest starring Alexander Vlahos as a stranger who knows entirely too much about Jack's life. 4 stars.

We got two stories from James Goss and two stories from Guy Adams. So, it's basically a show down! Let's see who wins~

Let’s start with Guy Adams.

The Year After I Died

Finally we get to see what happened after Jack was revived, but before he joined Torchwood. This was a beautiful window into the transition between the morally grey character we saw travelling with the Ninth Doctor and the man we see in Torchwood, the man who is beginning his path to become a hero in his own right. Overall, pretty interesting and important to Jack’s story.

Month 25

Timey Wimey as hell. We get another rare peak into Jack’s life, this time from before he met the Doctor, back when he was a time agent. We get to hear his real name used, and see a young, more self centered version of Jack than we are used to seeing in Torchwood. Plenty of fun, but a bit confusion if you aren’t paying very close attention.

Next, the challenger, James Goss.

Let me start out by saying, he has a massive unfair advantage because of his guest stars.

Wednesdays are for Beginners

Jack and Jackie Tyler have an adventure trying to save the people of Jackie’s neighborhood. This story is hilarious. The two have incredible chemistry that switches from playful banter to real, raw emotional moments. As far as the timeline goes, we have a look at early Torchwood Jack, still looking for the Doctor and checking in on Rose. Who knew that at this point in his life, Jackie Tyler would be the exact person he really needed to talk to. While it might be a less important story than the ones Guy Adam’s submitted, it is also without a doubt, a hell of a lot more fun.

One Enchanted Evning

The fun continues, this time with Alonso! Remember the guy from the Titanic episode that the 10th Doctor set Jack up with? We finally get to see the evening they had together…no not like that. Things get out of control and action packed very quickly, but the pair have a really comfortable back and forth that is flirty and supportive. It’s a shame Alonso didn’t get to join Torchwood, he would have been an incredible addition to the team (not to mention a ray of sunshine after over half the team died.)

That all being said, for me, the winner was without a doubt James Goss. His episodes were fun and memorable in a way that Guy Adam’s weren’t, but that all comes down to person preference. The great thing in this collection is that between the two of them, you get everything. The playful, flirty, banter-filled romps, and the serious, complex, adventures.

Fans of Jack should definitely buy this!

When I discovered this box set I knew that I just had to have it. Great idea to use the audiobook medium to fill the gaps in Jack's story.

The Year After I died
At first I had a bit of trouble to visualize what's going on, but hey - one more reason for repeated listening. I really liked this story, I would not mind to listen to more stories set in this time. I like the character of Silo a lot. While Jack does not appear much in the first half of the story, it's important to set up the story and I think it was done in a very fast paced entertaining way. I always wondered how Jack would do after being left behind and I was kinda reliefed to see him angry, confused and scared and not just rolling with it. And how he refuses to be called a hero. Aw, so in denial. ;) So yeah - since he still doesn't really get that he can't die - I would like to have a sequel!!
4/5 Stars

Wednesday For Beginners
The story did not make a lot of sense, but the interaction between Jack and Jackie was great - so I was really enjoing it! Still with everything Jack told her, I'd excpect a dose of retcon in her tea. I would kinda not trust her not telling Rose about meeting Jack...
3/5 Stars

One Enchanted Evening
Another story that begs for a sequel. Not at all how I expected this story to go, but it was actually pretty amazing! Really, really loved it. Alonso is so sweet (I just wanna hug him and keep him!) and all his scenes with Jack (in person and on the phone) were spot on. The only tiny thing I missed was that while Alonso got enough introspecive moments into his state of mind, with Jack it was only hints and teasing. The most we got here was with Mother Nothing and that was kind of not the right creature to have this kind of conversation with. I wish this would have gone deeper. But I guess what would have been kind of out of character for Jack so... sigh.
5/5 Stars

Month 25
Last story of the box set and turns out it was the most interesting! The hour just flew by. Of course I always wanted to know about those two missing years and I think the story delivered. It's important to say that this one should be listened to unspoiled. Which I thank fully was. I liked the idea that we learned Jack's real name through this story... but boy did it feel strange to hear it. Most interesting thing was to learn more about the Time Agency. I would love to hear more stories from that time.

1. The Year After I Died by Guy Adams

2. Wednesdays For Beginners by James Goss
Captain Jack incontra Jackie Tyler... e fanno faville.

3. One Enchanted Evening by James Goss

4. Month 25 by Guy Adams

My husband can't stand Captain Jack for some reason but man oh man, I think he is charismatic! I know there is some controversy over John Barrowman but I love the way he plays Captain Jack and would love to see him take the role again. I hadn't listened to his Big Finish stuff yet so after recently revisiting Torchwood, I picked up The Lives of Captain Jack series. He is not only a great actor, he is a great voice actor!

I loved his story with Jackie Tyler, I adore Camille Coduri who plays Jackie - and I love that years after playing her on Doctor Who, they still bring her back for Big Finish (seriously check out The Dimension Cannon series, she's great in those and gets a lot more character development than you got to see on screen). I doubt many of them thought they would still be playing their characters inching near a decade later but I think that speaks volumes about how much fans love these characters. Hand clap for Big Finish because the fans are crazy about their lore and they go above and beyond to keep the world lore consistent and in line with the Doctor Who universe.

Will definitely finish the series, it has been enjoyable and fun to listen to!

1. The year after I died

2. Wednesday For Beginners

3. One Wnchanted Evening

As much as I've been loving the new Torchwood audios this I didn't like just quite as much. Maybe it's just cause Jack can be a bit one dimensional. In the first story he was way too much like Tennant's doctor, even to the point of saying how wonderful humans were, which as a human was even more annoying than when Tennant would do it.
The 2nd story though was really great. Wonderful to hear Camille as Jackie again. She was SO brilliant. I'm not sure Jackie would actually talk to herself that much. But it was an excellent, very funny and slightly scary two hander.
The third story was a rather typical space adventure, made lots better by the vocal talents of Katy Manning playing an absurdly horrendous alien who was trying to eat things and steal the universe's biggest diamond.
The fourth story was back with the time agency. It was fun science fiction but very light. (Even with one of the main characters having a dying husband).
I enjoyed it but I'm not sure I'd buy volume 2 unless it has Jackie in it!

He’s the young star of the Time Agency, and his whole life is about to fall apart. But that’s not going to stop him winning.

Would like more stories with Jack at the time agency.

Can’t say this was worth €30 but the last one did make up for some pretty bland stories.

So, since Jack is back, I had to get this box sets. My mind was completely made up, when I learned that in the next series he’s going to meet River Song. How epic is that going to be?!
