Life On The Edge is an intense, dramatic, passionate novel about a young, talented figure skater with a dream to participate in the Olympics. Through hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance Emily and her partner are well on their way to achieving that goal. However, there is one thing that is standing in their way - Emily's heart. Jennifer Comeaux has done a fantastically beautiful job constructing a story I shall never forget. I'm truly impressed this is Comeaux's first novel. Remember her name everyone because we are going to see some great works produced by this author.

Skating is Emily's life. Unless she can be on the ice every day, she isn't happy. Pairs skating is just a new way of skating and achieving her dream of being in the Olympics. More than that, both she and her partner Chris want to get gold while they're there. Their coach is Sergei, much younger than average and with a past he's not inclined to share. With his help Emily and Chris have the gold medal in sight, but then a problem starts to develop: the feelings between Sergei and Emily. Somehow the two must keep it a secret and work past the obstacles if either have any hope of achieving that goal or keeping their careers.

This was a really engrossing, entertaining read. I've only watched a couple of skating films; to be honest I'm really not a sports person in any shape or form, yet I enjoyed reading about the competitions, the rehearsals, this constant journey the characters are on to stay on top and live their dream. I wanted them to get high scores; I wanted them to get that gold medal. It also gave me a whole new appreciation for how difficult it is to be part of a sport as a career, and just how much it takes. I'm very admiring of people who can do something like skating, because it takes a lot of skill and practice. I know as I sat there the whole time reading it I was thinking that I could never do something like that; my awful hand-eye co-ordination wouldn't allow for it and I'd probably be too afraid of all the falls, both physical and metaphorical, I'd have to take.

Emily fights past that fear. Every time a competition comes up she becomes incredibly nervous and anxious, yet she does her best to get past that and let herself be the best that she can be when she's on the ice. Her passion and determination really comes through and that made her an admirable character; it made it easy to want good things for her. Even when she'd committed herself to a relationship with Sergei, she was still fiercely determined to get the medal - this girl always had her eye on the prize.

I really enjoyed the relationship between the two. I admit I did have a bit of a problem at the beginning. It wasn't insta-love - I just want to make that clear. It's more that Comeaux just relates it more generally rather than going into detail for a couple of scenes. Through Emily she stated that they met several times, had lengthier conversations, and then they came to realise they were growing to have feelings for each other. This wasn't exactly a major problem, though, and I was soon engrossed reading about the ups and downs in their relationship, scared on Emily's behalf about the trouble they might get into. Sergei is sweet and respects Emily's morals; at the same time he pushes her to do better when she's skating, knowing exactly what she's capable of. His past is a sad one, though perhaps not as different or shocking as you might hope.

Comeaux has created a wonderful set of characters here. Yes, Emily and Sergei are the main ones, but from Chris, who's funny and supportive and generally just really likeable, to Courtney, one of Em's students, who's like your adorable little sister, to Em's roommate, to her parents...all of the characters had their own personalities and voices. This is also not one of those stories where the author clearly has no idea what they're talking about. It's extremely obvious Comeaux has done her research, and it creates a very strong, believable story. Life on the Edge is a brilliant balance between skating and romance, between plot and characters, and I can definitely recommend it to anyone, regardless of whether or not you're a sports fan.

"ROMANCE ON THE EDGE"

I have to say right from the start that books, be they fiction or non-fiction, about sport, are not generally my cup of tea, although I am a big fan of figure skating and ice dancing, purely as an armchair critic!
When I discovered that the author Jennifer Comeaux was a big fan of figure skating, I did wonder if her enthusiasm for the sport would overshadow any romantic storyline that was to run alongside and intertwine with it.
I quickly realised however, that Jennifer's obvious passion and enthusiasm for figure skating, only served to enhance the storyline, giving it an authenticity and reality, which it may otherwise have lacked. The vivid and informative descriptions of both ice skating competitions, practice and coaching sessions and the inherent rivalry between competitors and indeed coaches, was detailed and thorough. More than enough to make me feel that I was ringside, eavesdropping on the various conversations, without being overdosed on facts and figures about the performances and competitors, other than those which I needed to know to ensure continuity of the storyline.
-.-
There was a great balance between character analysis, plot development and information background, enough to ensure the most discerning reader of a well-rounded and interesting storyline, without getting bogged down with too many technicalities.
Jennifer takes you behind the scenes to let the readers feel the aura of nerves, excitement, disappointment, elation, and triumph, in both Emily and Sergei's professional and personal lives, in a way which captivates and enthralls.
-.-
Alongside this, the unfolding romance between coach and protege, is poignant, naive and almost simplistic in its intensity and power to move the reader. Much is to happen to the young couple before they are fully united and free to declare their love and there are several unexpected twists and turns to the plot, that left me wondering just how much more they could take, before the strain was just too much.
-.-
In Emily we are introduced to a very young, up and coming star in the figure skating world, who has recently been persuaded by her coach, that a move into the doubles competitions would be advantageous for her, so long as the right and compatible partner can be found. Emily is quite an immature and star-struck teenager, struggling to overcome her competition nerves, in order to find the breakthrough that her coach, family and friends, believe is just around the corner. For Emily, the single most thought on her mind, is winning Olympic gold for her country and she is unable to contemplate achieving anything less, which only serves to increase the pressure she constantly places herself under. The pressure from her parents, who have sacrificed much in order to help their daughter achieve her dreams, is subtle yet ever-present. The constant driving force of her coach, whilst really helping to focus her, is also a constant worry to Emily, lest she falter and destory his faith in her. The encouragement she has received from Chris, her new found pairs partner, is immeasurable and the fact that both of the youngsters have adopted an almost brother/sister relationship, ensures that any tension is tempered with some light-hearted banter and support, without the added complications of an impending relationship. Emily is therefore rather ill-prepared for the relationship which develops at an alarming rate, between herself and Sergei and we start to see all the elements of teenage feelings begin to emerge, as this unknown force is unleashed upon her, which she seems powerless to fight. She does manage to muster her thoughts together enough to be forceful with Sergei over certain aspects of their relationship, which demands his respect for her feelings and youth and what at first appears to be an infatuation for an older man, soon blossoms into something deep and meaningful, with Emily being allowed to move things along at her own pace, without recourse.
-.-
Chris seems to have been a little overlooked at times, with his feelings being almost ignored when Sergei and Emily begin their relationship without his knowledge, leaving him to wonder at the changes in Emily's temperament and concentration, which could so easily endanger his life, with the precision and skill which the sport of ice skating demands. Chris is left to find out about the relationship inadvertantly, which makes him feel even more hurt and ostracised. His usual dedication, nurturing, supportive and conscientious qualities, temporarily desert him, leaving him careless, vulnerable and ultimately in danger. He is eventually reconciled with both Emily and Sergei and proves himself to be a true friend to them both when the chips are down and the situation almost fatal to his own career.
-.-
Sergei is quite a young coach, who was once a competitor himself, although his career appears to have ended in rather strange circumstances. He is generally a cool, calm and collected customer, focused on his career and keeping his private life strictly separate. He is totally unprepared for the emotional somersaults that his emotions are put through, when he realises that against all the rules and etiquette, he has deep and intense feelings for his young protege. Although he knows that as the older and more mature person in the relationship, he should set an example and keep Emily at arm's length, he is unable to contemplate this possibility and allows the situation to develop until it is almost beyond his control to stop.
-.-
Both plot and characters develop and mature together, in this debut novel, written with great maturity and confidence, which will appeal not only to its intended YA audience, but which will also sit comfortably with a wider adult audience, who enjoy innocent tender romances, without any explicitness or eroticism.
A great stand alone novel in its own right, although Jennifer is currently working on the manuscript for her next adventure featuring Emily and Sergei, called `Edge Of The Past'.

**I received a free copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**

I was really excited about reading this book, since (as far as I remember) I've never read a book about sports, and ice skating has always had an appeal to me, it's not only very demanding, but also incredibly beautiful.

And who didn't grow up watching movies like Ice Princess starring Michelle Trachtenberg?

Emily and Chris always made me feel like I was right there with them, feeling nervous just before every competition, and getting a smile on my face when they succeeded. You really feel their emotions, and I actually felt like crying once, it was very exciting.

And Emily and Sergei were adorable. Sergei actually seemed too perfect to be true! He was such a sweetheart, and he respected Emily very much, which I really liked. I don't think I have anything bad to say about them. Although we start to notice that Sergei doesn't share anything about his past with Emily, but when it all finally comes to the light, it's something that, being Emily, I would've liked to know from the start, and wouldn't have liked to be kept in the shadows like that, so I completely understood her reaction and the way she handled things.

Even so, I really liked Sergei, he's an admirable guy. Where are all the Sergei's at?

Once people start finding out about their relationship, they share their opinion with Emily, and what they all say is actually pretty understandable! If you're finally making your dream of competing in the Olympics come true, it's only natural that others will freak out if you start dating your coach. What if you have a fight and it affects your performance on the ice? What if you break up and don't want to see him again? What if the federation find out? Emily obviously doesn't see this, since she's very much in love, but I did understand others people's worries.

And I hadn't realized this was taking place in 2001! The attack to the World Trade center is included here and it's really well done, it brings people together and makes them realize what's actually important. I thought this was very beautiful.

Another thing I hadn't realized at first was Emily's faith. She's a religious girl and has very strong beliefs, which Sergei respects.

I enjoyed this book very much and hope I get the chance to see what happens to Emily's career in the future, and also to her relationship with Sergei, since they're oh so adorable.

review:

WOW! I have always said that I am not into sports books and now I need to reconsider it seriously. At least when it comes to sports romance books I have changed my mind. Especially when it comes to ice skating romance books! Life On the Edge was an experience to me in so many different ways. Firstly, one of the few sports I am following and watching in TV is ice-skating. I grew up with it and I knew all the big names in ice skating, also the ones mentioned in Life On the Edge! Ice skating was the sport which was always broadcasted during the Soviet times because Russians were very good at that and I always was glued behind the TV because ice skating is one of the most beautiful sports in my opinion.

With that said, I loved Life On the Edge by Jennifer Comeaux. It was a beautiful book which showed the daily life of ice skaters and forbidden romance between the coach and the student. It was well written and easy to read and I could not put the book away – I read it in one standing!

Regarding the plot:

The reader is brought into the world of top level ice skating where Emily and Chris are fighting for their place for the Olympics team. Emily is new to the pairs skating but she has all what it takes to reach the top of pairs skaters – she is technically strong, competitive and an eloquent dancer. Emily and Chris are training under a Russian Coach Sergei who has a strong belief that these two can make their dreams come true!

Emily realizes that she is drawn to Sergei and that they have so much in common besides ice skating: music, books and that brings them too close to each other. What starts out as a friendship is quickly developing into something more; something more which is ethically wrong and forbidden – being in love. The results of that love can be devastating for both – it could end both of their carriers.

The ultimate aim for Emily, Chris and Sergei is to win the gold medal at the Olympics, but when Emily’s and Sergei’s relationship is coming out it can endanger everything for them. Besides that, Emily finds out about Sergei’s past and the reasons behind him topping his ice skating carrier so abruptly and these facts can put a stopper to the otherwise strong love.

I adored the writing which the author did with Emily’s and Sergei’s relationship. It was so intense, sweet, aching and at the same time real. It was not a fluffy-buffy love story, but a story where there were serious obstacles which usually happen in the real life and which were real due to Emily’s daily life described.

I also enjoyed the peek into the ice skaters life with lots of training, efforts, personal problems, competitions. Even though I do love ice skating, I do not know about the details behind the screen and I was glad that the author brought it closer to the reader.

Regarding the characters:

Let me put it that way – they seemed real and believable and that made them reliable as characters.

Emily was written as a strong personality who also has issues – insecurity, anxiety before the competitions, jealousy. I liked that Emily was not perfect, but she had a will as strong as hard metal and she was sweet and loyal.

Sergei balanced her very nicely. He was supportive to Emily and Chris, never gave up on them. He leaded them towards reaching their goals. Sergei has some secrets which he is trying to hide from Emily and that almost broke them apart, but he is consistent!

Chris was adorable! I think having a support from him was essential to Emily. Their relationship was heartwarming. Besides Chris there are many important supportive characters like Emily’s parents, her friends, Viktor, young skaters etc. Everybody fitted into the book and created a wonderful story around Emily and Sergei.

Generally:

Besides telling a very good story, the author gives reader so many positive emotions while reading. Life On the Edge was like a fresh breeze which brought warmth, energy and positive feelings to the reader. Absolutely loved it!

I know absolutely zero about ice skating but this book had me on the ice soaring thru the air doing all kids of fancy spins and lifts. I found this little gem of a story by picking up a novella free on my kindle called Reaching the Edge. After reading the 12 page short story I had to pick up this one to find out more about the story of Emily and Sergio. The story that develops is addicting and now I have to keep reading. I am now a fan of this author and will continue to read her books.

This started out really strong for me! I loved the romance and the ice skating background. I am addicted to watching any sport that is somehow dance related or pretty. I can't help it, I love it. So reading all the descriptions of Emily and Chris's routines made me want to binge Olympics videos.

What really sabotaged my enjoyment of this was that the relationship drama started to get old. I can enjoy a forbidden romance trope, but this was drawn out for too long and I wasn't very happy with the resolution.

I'm fascinated by figure skating especially pairs skating so when I found this book and read the blurb about a pairs skater falling for her coach and their "forbidden" love (another of my favorite themes in romance books), I knew I had to read it.

I was surprised because I thought the age difference between Sergei and Emily was going to be more than his 25 to her 19. Told strictly from Emily's POV (which had me wishing for Sergei's POV~especially in some scenes), I found that I wasn't immediately drawn in. Instead the magic of this book slowly wrapped around me in the story and characters until I was totally unaware of anything else but this world that Jennifer created. And I definitely did not want to leave!!

Not only did I love Sergei's character *sigh* but I found myself also connecting with Emily as well. I was so invested in them getting their HEA. They struggled through the book with their feelings for each other and having to hide them from pretty much everyone. And how hiding their relationship affected those closest to them. They were so sweet together but nothing came easy for them. They got battered from all sides. I loved how Sergei was able to help Emily gain strength and confidence on and off the ice and I loved that he was consistently aware of what she needed from him and he was able to give her that comfort. Oh...and the way he loved her!! *sigh* Just loved these two together so much!! There was also great secondary characters that added so much to the story. I was rooting for Marley and Chris and I thought Courtney was so cute!! I did feel a little sorry for Drew because he was so sweet to Emily.

Life On The Edge was such an interesting read. I really enjoyed the scenes with Emily and Chris's skating practices and competitions and then the Olympics. I liked the outcome of the Olympics and how Jennifer wrote Emily's reactions and feelings about what had happened. So good!! And even the part with 911~which I wasn't expecting and made the story feel more real to me. I also loved reading Emily's thoughts while she skated and the comfort she gained from Chris as her partner.

I just have to say that I have never loved a book that didn't have one ounce of sex in it more!! lol ;) Sergei and Emily's intense feelings for each other poured off the pages and there was an intimacy between them that didn't leave me feeling as though I was missing something.

Just a great story that I enjoyed so much and I can't wait to return. Loved the ending and it definitely left me with a smile and wanting more. Going into my keeper pile to be reread.

BEST OF THE BEST rating!

Yes! Life on the Edge is a sweet, thought provoking, funny, sports story. Emily Butler has been skating her whole life, yet horrible competition anxiety has kept her from being successful. So, she agrees to try pairs skating and meets with an up and coming young pairs coach, Sergei Petrov. They agree to work together and a star is made. Sergei is wonderful at helping Emily overcome her nerves. As is her partner, Chris. I thoroughly enjoyed the daily grind, hours of practice, and tremendous effort from all three. Talent and hard work turns into success for the young team.

Off the ice, Emily and Sergei start meeting at a coffee shop to discuss books. Yes! I love that they're both avid readers. It adds another element to a great story. :) As Sergei and Emily's friendship deepens, they start to fall in love. With Sergei being Emily's coach, it would be taboo and, possibly, a career ender for them both. Do they fight their growing love? Does Sergei remain the coach for Emily and Chris? Or do they do the unthinkable and try keeping it a secret from everyone, even Chris? Does it work for them, personally and/or professionally? What a fascinating dilemma. I've read about students and teachers, a psychologist and her client in the book With Good Behavior, etc. A coach and his athlete, though? Oh, wow. Thought provoking, indeed. Life on the Edge made me ask a lot of questions and think about issues I never had before.

Chris is an awesome, talented, partner. Sergei is a tall, good-looking, Russian who has lived in America for five years. He's also a great coach. :) Emily is a sweet, determined, hard working, very talented, petite, blue eyed blonde, American. Aubrey is Emily's roommate, friend and an ice dancer. Courtney and Mark are a fun juniors team coached by Sergei and Emily. Emily's parents and relatives are a close knit, loving, family. :) Viktor is a not at all likeable coach. The characters have depth. :)

Life on the Edge is clean, fun, powerful, funny, sweet, and just wonderful. To state that it's well written is an understatement.

Recommended for readers 12-up, sports fans, parents, and women everywhere.

Emily Butler didn't always plan to skate pairs, but due to her increasing performance anxiety, she soon realized that having someone with her on the ice wouldn't be such a bad idea. Now, with her partner Chris Grayden, she dreams of being the first American team to achieve Olympic Gold. As she spends more and more time with her coach, Sergei, both on and off the ice, can she stay focused and reach her goal? Or will the forbidden romance cost both of their careers?

I have read a lot of romances about athletes, but I do believe this is the first where the main athlete is female, and I loved it! I didn't know a lot about the figure skating world before picking up this book, but thanks to the author's extreme knowledge in the sport, I feel like I understand it so much better. Clearly, the author knew her stuff. She did a great job of explaining the trials and tribulations the skater's went through, and you couldn't help but share in the joy when they landed their jumps or finished clean routines. You really get a sense of what it's like to be a champion skater and how hard you have to work, the pain you have to suffer through, to achieve the dream.

Even with all of the technical aspects of the sport explained, it didn't get in the way of the romance. Emily and Chris' coach, Sergei, is a young former World champion from Russia, whose skating career ended mysteriously, and he refuses to talk about why. He already spends a lot of time with Emily and Chris coaching them, but when he asks Emily to help him coach a younger couple, they start spending more and more time together both on the ice and off. As they start realizing their attraction to one another, they know the romance is off limits and could cost them their careers, but the attraction is undeniable. Is love worth the risk? If they do give it a go, what happens if anyone finds out?

Life On the Edge is a very sweet, clean, and wholesome story of young love, working hard to achieve your dreams, and standing tall for what you believe in. I would recommend it to both young and old readers looking for a light read with just enough angst to keep you wanting more.

This book me FOUR MONTHS to finish which must be a record for me. It definitely put me in a reading slump, a lot of the books I've read since are course books. Honestly I hate to be the harsh reviewer here because it had some great reviews and I'm a writer myself I understand the work and effort put into this. However, I'm not going to lie this was hard to get through.

The main problem I had with this book was the pacing. It was so off and random. At times it would speed up skipping weeks at a time and next it would slow down and dragg or skip only an hour ahead. It always seemed to do the opposite of what it should in each scene and that frustrated me to no end because that hindered my connection to the characters. Because of all the pacing issues I didn't buy into the romance it seemed very rushed and too much happening at once, I just couldn't feel anything between them. There were also a lot of cliches, for example the villain thrown in to harass the character and no other purpose. I'm sick to death of reading a scene where the heroin is almost raped but the love interest magically saves the day.

I will say the one thing I liked was the friendship between the main character and her skating partner Chris. That felt more real to me and it was nice to see the love and respect they had for each other in a non romantic way.

Overall I wanted to love this because I love ice-skating and there isn't many books written about it. Unfortunately though this one was not for me.

It seems that lately I have struggled with rating books, and this is another one. This book has a lot going for it. A nice older young adult romance, ice skating, and it's completely clean! This is the most exciting part of the book for me. No profanity, and no sex scenes! Your teenager can read this, and your mother-in-law can, too. I have to say that Sergei and Emily are great together, and you can sense the chemistry from the start. Not only that, Sergei is a fine coach, and he is a real man. I'll let you read the book to understand what is implied there!

This is your typical young adult romance. Don't expect anything out of the ordinary, and you can bet there will be a lot of "sappy" romance. Yes, if you follow my reviews at all, you know that is something I always point out. But at least Sergei is sweet, and nothing horrible happens between them. There is a bad guy, and I wasn't expecting it, but all's well that ends well. I was glad that not everything ended according to everyone's dreams--no spoilers from me.

If you like sweet, clean romances and/or figure skating, this would be a perfect book for you. Quite seriously, what you see is what you get, but it is a nice, quick read for any quiet evening.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

I expected a lot more. I don't want to be the only (mean) person who gives this book the lowest rating but I can't lie and say it was amazing when I thought it was just an average story. Sorry,I really, really wanted to love it since I am a huge fan of forbidden romances. However,I did manage to get butterflies in my stomach at "certain" scenes. *wink* *wink*

I took several different things away from this book. The main one being a better understanding of a sport that I love to watch. :) I also took away a story that leaves you rooting for someone even when you don't realize that you are!

At just 18 years old, Emily is quickly becoming part of something huge. She is half of a world figure skating team, that if all goes right, is headed straight for the Olympics. Every girls dream right!?

Can we say perfectness?!

Insert the left field feelings that Emily suddenly finds herself feeling for her coach, Sergei. Her coach, of all people, and she is falling for him. One would think this is awesome because they get to spend all that time together. Tell that to the partner, Chris, who just happens to have his own feelings for Emily. Insert insane complications here.

As you turn the pages, you watch as Emily and Sergei battle through all the emotions that come with their situation. Do we hide the feelings. No, we act one them. No, we hide them. Is this right? Can we do this? Should we do this? Am I willing to give up my dream? Is this worth it? While working through all of these things, they suddenly find themselves at an impasse, and everything is suddenly on that line they were trying to hard to avoid. Can they save it?

One thing I would have liked to see more of in this book is the drama concerning Chris. I realize he is the partner and that would have been an "obvious" move, but I felt there could have been more conflict about this where he was concerned. Aside from this small thing, I freaking loved this book.

Jennifer brings you a truly heartfelt story that you cannot help but get into. You could tell from the first couple of chapters that this one was very researched book, which made everything more enjoyable for me as a reader. You get everything in this book. Struggle, emotions, heartbreak, romance, real life problems, and watching some achieve their goal come hell or high water. Not to mention that the characters internal monologues were amazing and gave me so much more insight to their character. I can't wait for the second book to read more about these two!

I can honestly say that I've never read a book like this before. When I read the synopsis, I was so excited. Ice skating? Cool (no pun intended), I use to love watching the winter olympics for that sole reason and the summary reminded me of one of my all time favorite movies The Cutting Edge. I knew if anything, this book would bring me something different and it completely did just that.

I found myself rooting for Em and Chris like they were real people; everytime they'd take the ice my heart would beat just a little bit faster keeping me on the very edge of my seat bed. I may have even been chanting, "USA, USA!!" in my head a few times ;-)

A few things I really loved about this book were the characters, the forbidden romance, and the drama; it had just the perfect amount to keep things interesting.

Jennifer Comeaux is a new author and it seems she took a few chapters to find her rhythm, but once she got warmed up the story took on a life of its own. I wish a little more time would have been spent developing the relationship between Em and Sergei. I feel like they got together too quick. For me, the build-up and anticipation is half the fun and wish she would have made me sweat just a little bit longer. Eventhough she did a beautiful job encompassing a wide time frame; it all went by too quickly. It took me some time to really get into the story and once I did it was over; I wanted more time with the characters I had grown to love.

Despite the slow start, the book was definitely worth the read; I even found myself going back and re-reading the second half of the book. It's also "new adult"; a genre I have developed quite a taste for. I think the author is off to a good start. She has piqued my interest and I will definitely read other books she writes in the future. Sequel perhaps?

Give it a shot! Its only $2.99 on amazon :-)

Life On The Edge is a wonderful story about Emily. She loves to skate and along with her partner Chris and new coach Sergei, they dream of Olympic gold. Emily and Chris have not been skating together that long. Their coach Sergei is young, having left Russia to coach in America. They have many obstacles in their path including Emily's stage fright. She can't seem to calm her nerves when she is on the ice. Emily has always thought that Sergei is too young to coach but he never talks about why he left Russia and his own skating partner so suddenly. The line between coach and student start to blur when Emily and Sergei start getting close. When Sergei reveals his feelings for her, what will happen to their professional skating relationship? With no rules in place with coach/student dating, it is still frowned upon by the stiff judges. How will her parents and skating partner react to their new found love? Is it even worth it? They will have to find out the hard way when a jealous coach gets wind of their feelings for each other.

First, I love figure skating. I have always enjoyed watching it on television. It amazes me the strength and sacrifices these young people have to make to do what they love. I really enjoyed reading this book because even though fiction, it gives us an inside glimpse into the life of a figure skater. We see them skate through the bad times and the good. It is such a sweet romance. Something so good and clean that you won't mind to share this book with someone. I can't wait to read the sequel to this book. Be sure and read my review for the second book, Edge Of The Past.

I find it interesting when you have a book sitting on your Ipad to read for so long and then you forget about it till something prompts you to finally read it. For me , that was Jennifer's book "Life on the Edge" as I have had it since it was released on my Kindle but for some reason I just hadn't got around to finishing it and then I was prompted by the tour to read and review it. So I dug out my Kindle App and searched for the book and got stuck into it. Reading it , it reminded me of a movie plot line that I think I watched in one of those Ice Skating movies I love so much as I have seen them all from The Cutting Edge Quartets to The Ice Princess and Ice Castles. Life on the Edge is the story of Emily who is a champion ice-skater who starts to develop feelings for her coach Sergio. The pair know that what they are doing isn't right and could cost them both their careers - hers as a champion Olympic Ice-skater and his as a Coach. So begins an on/off secret romance . What will happen though when the pair are found out and secrets from Sergio's past in Russia come back to threaten their relationship ?
Life on the Edge is a contemporary Romeo and Juliet story where instead of Verona it is the Ice Skating Rink.
I look forward to reading the next two books in the Edge Series = The Edge of the Past and Reaching for the Edge .

I highly enjoyed reading about the skating competitions and they way the partners feels about each other during skating.

This is one of those guilty pleasure books where the Coach falls in the love with the trainee but it's a big no-no! Love these type of romances! It's risky to be together so they have to watch themselves and hide from everybody. It was a great book with not too much drama and it was very realistic.

The romance is not heated at all so if you're looking for a contemporary romance piece - this isn't it. There are no steamy scenes as the main character, Emily, is a catholic who absolutely must be married before she has sex. There are still hot and heavy lead ups and the characters must stop themselves but that is all. I still loved them together.

This book made me binge watch a bunch of skating competitions on youtube. LOL! I like figure skating and watch it during the Olympics but this made me want to watch everything...so I searched everything - the Lutz, the death spiral, etc. I just had to see what Emily was talking about when she did them.

Summary - Lighthearted, competitive, risky romance.

I enjoy watching ice skating movies and the Olympics. Life on the Edge is a compelling novel that takes you into the lives of a pairs figure skating and we get an insider knowledge of the highs and lows of the sport. Emily and Sergei have some choices to make on the relationship the have and where they want it to go. It was fun to see this unfold. Sergei has some secrets that come back to haunt him. Emily has a lot to take in and can she forgive Sergei? I like the close relationship Emily shares with her family. But, not family is perfect and I found Emily's stubbornness a important key to her success in her personal and professional life. I think that Ms. Comeaux did an extraordinary job of describing the skating performances. I felt like I was at the rink watching it happen. Life on the Edge is a fun modern day romance with a hit of mystery and a really creepy bad guy. This is a clean read no sex or bad language. I am still thinking about this story several days later. I will be on the lookout for more from Ms. Comeaux. Enjoy!

I. Could. NOT. Put. Life On the Edge down!!!

I shirked my Saturday duties yesterday afternoon because as soon as I picked up Life on the Edge I was hooked! Hardly braking to make lunch and dinner and take potty breaks! I had to know who won the competitions and did the romance work!?

Emily, Chris and Sergei's story is an intriguing novel that involves one of my favorite Olympic events. You really discover just how much heart, energy, muscle, emotion, and mental determination goes into this sport. Each character was well developed with real reactions to situations and a great balance of strength and weaknesses. The emotional responses were spot on, they felt real, not over emotional or under emotional.

So refreshing, a romance story that doesn't have a sex scene, but has lots of romance.

I wouldn't change a single element of Life on the Edge.

I was so impressed with this DEBUT novel from Jennifer Comeaux that I already went on Amazon and gifted Life on the Edge to my sister!

Thank you Jennifer for sharing Life on the Edge with Clu's Review!

I read Life on the Edge in one sitting! What an endearing story! I really cared for these characters, I was on the edge of my seat to find out what happened to them.

I also really appreciated the attention to detail in the book. I'm just a fan of figure skating but the book illustrated that world so well, I could easily see it all in my mind!

I can't wait to read Edge of the Past and find out what happens next.

This was a very sweet read. Clean, YA.

I got choked up at the moments of the competition. I know how much dedication and work and sacrifice it takes for those moments to happen.

4 stars.

Emily Butler is a nineteen year old figure skater with a dream to make it to the Olympics. Once a singles skater, she has made the transition into pairs skating. She and partner Chris Grayden dream of competing at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City and winning the Olympic gold medal. With their young Russian coach Sergei, a former junior world champion who left Russia after his career ended suddenly and mysteriously, they have a good chance of going all the way to achieving their dream.

The story opens in the summer of 2000, leading into the competitive season a year prior to the Olympics. Emily and Chris are practicing for the preliminary competitions leading up to the Olympics. In order for them to attain their Olympic dreams, Emily must not only master technique but conquer her performance anxiety. With the encouragement and support of both Chris and Sergei, Emily is able to control her anxiety and they start to win medals. But along the way the skater-coach relationship between Emily and Sergei grows into a friendship when they co-coach a younger pairs skating couple, that soon blossoms into a forbidden relationship. As a matter of ethics, coaches and skaters are discouraged from dating each other, and Emily and Sergei struggle to find a balance between skating and love, while not losing out on their Olympic dreams. As their love story starts to unfold, new obstacles cross their path and others take notice of their relationship, which threatens to end it all for them.

Life on the Edge is so much more than a romance story, it is an in depth look into the life of an Olympic contender: the dedication to practicing her craft; the unrelenting pressures and expectations from coaches, partners, family and friends; the loyalty of her fans; and ultimately the pursuit to follow her Olympic gold dream.

In her debut novel, author Jennifer Comeaux weaves a riveting tale told in the first person narrative through the eyes of Emily Butler. The story is full of drama, romance, and intense competition, that captivates the reader and transports them into the world of competitive figure skating. I have been a fan of figure skating since I was a child, and in Life on the Edge, the author does not disappoint me. Her research and intimate knowledge of figure skating is phenomenal, while her love for the sport is undeniable. She brings the world of figure skating alive for her readers, and makes it easy for them to follow along, and even feel like they are alongside Emily as she is living out her skating dreams.

I love a good love story, and a forbidden love story is even better! The character's are realistic and complex people who have flaws and strengths that balances them. Emily and Sergei's love story takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride, their chemistry is so palpable, it simply captivates your interest. You can't help but cheer for Emily as she fights her feelings while doubting Sergei's feelings for her, their struggles keep you turning the pages. Emily is a strong girl who struggles with her performance anxiety, while Chris is easy going, and his laid back nature helps to keep Emily calm and centered. The secondary cast of characters are realistic and engaging, they also play an integral part in the storyline.

Life on the Edge is an engaging story that has a mixture of romance, drama and intensity that easily draws the reader into the storyline. The author does a wonderful job of transporting the reader into the world of figure skating. You can feel the intensity every time Chris and Emily steps out onto the ice together for each performance. I was able to easily visualize their performance, feeling the pressure and cheers from the crowd as they performed their program. I literally found myself holding my breath as they completed each element. This reminded me of my favorite skating movie, The Cutting Edge, I could easily see this story becoming a made for TV movie on Lifetime.

Life on the Edge is a wonderful story of love and following one's dream. It is a story that will easily draw you into the daily lives of competitive skaters, while providing the added bonus of a palpable forbidden romance between a coach and skater.

Life on the Edge is the first book in a series. The sequel, Edge of the Past, will be released in late November. The sequel will continue Emily and Sergei's story, but this time the reader will discover Sergei's mysterious past!

Yeah, Emily is a bit of a dull one. Though to be fair, she did have a couple of moments.

To be honest, I just wanted to shake her a lot of the time and say grow up. Especially on the parent front. But I did enjoy her relationship with Sergei. They did have chemistry. And I like that their relationship wasn’t all instantly hot and heavy. In a weird way, I like the fact that they waited. Comeaux didn’t make it seem overly preachy and religious. It was just a simple choice and after Sergei agreed that was that.

Though, I kept waiting them to eventually relent and bone each other.

Because obviously I watch too much daytime television and have not attended mass enough.

The figure skating scenes were done quite well too. In fact, I’d say this was the strong suit of this series. All the sequences, the competitions, the coaching, it seemed fairly realistic. A bit vanilla maybe. But realistic enough.

What I did have problems with though were the characters.

Emily is a bit of a Mary Sue. Her mother….God her mother was insufferable. The sad thing is this installment is the mother character at her best. She just goes downhill. I didn’t help that Emily completely let her boss her around when she’s a grown woman. Have a little backbone, darling. Mommy shouldn’t have a say in who her twenty-year-old dates. And for that matter, barge in on her apartment with not even checking with her.

It’s called boundaries.

The side characters also seem remarkably under developed. I wish that Comeaux would’ve taken more time with Em and Chris’s relationship they are figure skating partners after all. But you really don’t see Chris, unless there’s a skating competition.

Sergei was relatively interesting. He had a backstory and I did like that he didn’t pressure Em and in fact pushed her away. Honestly, he was probably the best character in the book.

In the end, I didn’t love this one or hate it. I pretty much gave it a middle of the road rating (C+). While it didn’t thrill me it didn’t have me raging. If you want a cute skating romance you might give it a try.

Life On the Edge is an absolute joy to read from the first page to the final chapter. There are so many things about this book that are so admirable and I truly appreciate Jennifer Comeaux for! She has made my list of all time favorite authors with her very first Novel! That in itself should speak volumes!

Emily Butler is a twenty year old figure skater with a dream to make it to the Olympics. Once a single skater, ... she made a difficult transition into couples skating. Not only does she have to overcome the obstacles of skating with a partner, Chris Grayden, ... but she is gripped with anxiety every time she has to perform.

Sergei, has been hired to coach Emily and Chris. He was once a figure skater himself, but ended his carrier at an early age, and moved from Russia to the States to coach. He takes Emily and Chris under his wing. Not only does he help them win medal after medal, but he is able to talk Emily through her anxiety, ... and ultimately, wins her heart.

With the pressing matter of ethics on a professional level, (coach dating student) ... Sergei and Em struggle to find a balance between work and love. They must find a way to love each other without losing out on their dreams in the skating rink. As their love slowly unfolds, new obstacles are thrown in their path. Someone takes notice of their relationship and threatens to end it all, ....

Lace up your skates, because your about to embark on an amazing journey with Emily, Chris, and Sergei to achieve a life long dream, while finding unexpected love in the wings! ;)

Emily Butler is a pairs figure skater with Olympic aspirations. It’s a life that revolves around the rink. Training all day every day to become the best of the best. With so little time to spend socially with anyone outside of the skating world, it is natural that her circle of friends consists of only other skaters. When Emily starts to spend time outside the rink with her coach, a young Russian man who used to be a champion pairs skater in his own right, she finds she has a lot more in common with him than just skating.

The two struggle with their growing feelings for one another. Relationships between coaches and skaters are frowned upon and can cause Emily’s Olympic dreams to grind to a screeching halt. And not just hers. Crossing that line can do more damage than any of them are willing to admit.

Review: I love the level-headed yet innocent Emily, who tries to fight her feelings for Sergei. A losing battle, of course. And Sergei, a man with integrity, though still mysterious, is willing to risk everything for Emily. Two well-developed characters the reader can fall in love with. The life of a skater was shown in living color. All the work that goes into preparing for the Olympics. How one wrong move in a competition can crush those dreams and the emotional roller coaster of the competitors. Jennifer Comeaux is a talented writer with true voice.

Recommendation: Though I’m not necessarily a fan of figure skating, this book was a wonderful love story and well worth the time and money spent. Clean with strong values exhibited. Good for anyone who loves a good clean romance. Loved it!

I have to admit, this book surprised me. It's the first contemporary romance I've ever read, and I was a bit worried about the MC only being nineteen and whether or not I'd be able to relate to her. However, the premise intrigued me, so I bought it.

I shouldn't have worried. I couldn't put this book down! I read it in two days and loved every minute of it.

While the main plot of the story is Emily and her pairs skating partner, Chris, trying to fight their way to the 2002 Olympics, the love story is a perfect blend of fiery chemistry, tender love, and incredible heartbreak. Emily and Sergei (Emily and Chris's skating coach) struggle against the attraction between them, knowing their relationship is forbidden and could ruin everything they've worked for.

This is a sweet romance that draw's the reader into Emily's world. I also really enjoyed the ice skating routines and performances, even though I don't know an awful lot about the sport. It was exciting to live the dream through Emily's eyes.

This one is headed to my re-read pile. I know I will enjoy it again in the future. I'll be on the lookout for more books from Jennifer Comeaux.

I was amazed at Comeaux's ability to draw a reader into Emily's world from the first page. I was immediately engrossed in the story and did not want to put the book down! Why? First, this book is about an ice skater, and I have loved ice skating since I was young. Second, the story was magnetic and Comeaux's story flowed easily. I continually thought, "Just one chapter more." But one more chapter was never enough! There was something distinct in every chapter that gave me that desire to keep reading. I didn't want to stop until the book was finished! When I finally did reach the end, I was satisfied, yet so happy that there was another book so I could finish Emily and Sergei's story! This is definitely not your typical romance novel! I found it very refreshing to find an author who wrote a romance novel where the main character has firm beliefs on saving herself for marriage! I highly recommend Life on the Edge! The story, the characters and their relationships are so magnetic that you cannot help but be drawn in!

Read the complete review here.

I don't know about any of you guys, but YA books that spotlight the lives of female athletes have always piqued my interest (case and point - Catching Jordan, the Pretty Tough series, etc.). One day, I chanced upon a list on goodreads that listed these kinds of books, and this was how I came to find out about Life on the Edge. Upon reading the blurb, I was at once intrigued - I immediately wondered how Comeaux will go about the forbidden relationship, and whether she can actually make the said relationship feel right. I also wondered if she would be able to give both aspects of the book - the sports part and the romance part - equal attention, or whether one aspect would just eat the other up.

Let me start with this - both the sports part and the romance part of the book were done perfectly.
