Dr Bogle & Mrs Chandler - The Confession

Rate this book
The Bogle-Chandler Mystery is recognised as one of the most baffling cold cases in the annals of crime.

The victims, brilliant physicist Dr Gilbert Bogle and Mrs Margaret Chandler were found dead beside a picturesque river in Sydney, Australia. Investigators found no evidence to suggest how they had died. The bizarre manner in which the bodies were covered only added to the mystery. The police immediately suspected Margaret's husband, Geoffrey Chandler, as the killer. But despite drawing on the expertise of police and forensic agencies around the world, the coroner was unable to determine how the victims met their fate.

In his award-winning film and book on the case, the author presented new evidence, which provided a solution to the mystery. This new edition, brimming with photos and original documents, features the explosive testimony of a previously unknown witness to the deaths - a testimony that has thrust the case back onto the coroner's desk.

'This really is quite amazing! All I can say is that if what your new source says is true, then it pretty much means you've hit the nail on the head, and the mystery is finally solved, just over half a century after the event.' - Professor Jo Duflou, Chief Forensic Pathologist, University of Sydney

'An excellent read that for the first time tells the full story, aspects of which have baffled the best of scientific brains here and overseas.' - Viv Mahoney, Chief Toxicologist, Bogle Chandler Case

Thought provoking book. I think he may have hit the nail on the head with regards to what caused the deaths of these people. I'm trying to track down the film he made about it but have had no success so far unfortunately

Any Australian interested in the weird and spooky simply must add this book to their reading list...

Peter Butt, a man who seems to have dedicated all of his spare time to solving this mysterious case has written an extremely detailed and completely seamless account of what may have happened to Dr Bogle & Mrs Chandler that New Years Day in 1963... I received a free copy of this book from the publisher after I requested it however after having read it I feel a tad guilty that I didn't pay for it, it's such a well written book from someone who obviously has a real passion about this case, all his hard work shouldn't go without any reward so to make up for it I am going to buy a DVD of his film Who Killed Dr Bogle & Mrs Chandler...in my little world that will make me feel a bit less guilty, haha! This case is one that is well cemented into Australian history, anyone alive around the time would know about it and anyone that's interested in True Crime form down under would also be familiar, it's such an odd case that is still unsolved, what Peter Butt does here though is somewhat adds some closure, he presents the facts in great detail and lets you essentially make up your own mind, it's pretty hard to not agree with what he says though - I won't say it here because of spoilers but he has definitely done his research and knows what he's talking about, I doubt there is anyone in Australia that would know more about it than him. Sometimes with true crime books or history books that take place over different time periods can become confusing and hard to read, this book is so well put together and paced that I knew exactly what was happening at all times, his writing is very clean and easily read all the while being incredibly interesting, I was never once bored while reading this book.

I would recommend this title to all aussies after something that will spook and intrigue them... Easily the best book about "The Mystery of the Century" - read it!

This book completely reshapes the way you view one of Australia’s most baffling unsolved mysteries. It makes you rethink everything you’ve ever read about the case, especially how the key evidence was right there at the scene—yet the authorities failed to investigate it properly.

Peter Butt certainly outdid himself with the depth of research he uncovered and the way he presented it, not only within the book but also to professionals in forensic science and the medical field for their expert opinions. His meticulous approach adds weight to the theory that this case could have had a very different outcome if handled correctly from the start.

And who would’ve thought rotten eggs would play a role in this case? The revelation is just one of many fascinating details that make this book such a compelling read.

A terrific book that brings fresh perspective to a true mystery of the century. Highly recommended for anyone interested in cold cases, forensic failures, or historical true crime.

Mystery deaths! Illicit affairs! Secrets taken to graves! It's hard to believe that this case remained unsolved for so very long. I didn't watch the TV movie -with its new insights - when it aired in 2004, but this case is definitely an example of life imitating art. There are so many intriguing characters here. I definitely think Butt is on the right track when it comes to unravelling what really happened.
