Box Set rating: 3.5 stars -- I really enjoy Ms. Pearl's Songbird novels, though I have yet to read them all. But I've read all 3 of these, and they bring some great romance with intriguing and unique characters (who make mistakes, but are all inherently likable), and interesting challenges. I love that each story is SOOOOO different, but they all bring fantastic humour and a lot of feels. The box set is kind of up and down, with True Love and Rough Water being more weighted in the epic feels side of things, and Troublemaker bringing a bit more humour to the table as a bit of a breather in between. All in all I recommend this box set for all readers who enjoy realistic romance. And now I'll include the individual reviews for each book:

3.5 stars -- I received a copy of this ebook through netgalley!

Full disclosure: I've only read the first book in this series (and quite awhile ago too) and then skipped to this book, so not sure if there was any additional backstory behind Nessa and Jimmy in those books, though I don't get the impression there was (except maybe a cameo of Nessa in Home?).

I did feel like I was missing something when I first started this book...like I wanted a bit of Jimmy and Nessa's past at the beginning so I could feel how they were together.... We did get some flashbacks throughout the book, but they were mostly of Nessa's past with Rosie and her mother, not as much with how Jimmy and Nessa came to be friends... Maybe I'm just greedy, but I would have loved to have just a little bit of that story, how they met, that kind of thing. So basically it felt like we were thrust right into the story at the beginning, and I kept thinking "but how did we get here?" I'm not sure I appreciated that we didn't learn about what happened on that night or the aftermath until a bit later in the book....and even then we only got certain snapshots. It made it harder to get a feel for them as a couple and even as characters...or at least it felt that way for me.

Despite the slow start, I did come to feel for both of our characters. They were each struggling with the aftermath of the accident, and the choices they made that led up to that, and how that affected their future. And once I got a feel for their chemistry together, I really did feel it. It just took a bit to get to that point for me.

The story isn't just about Nessa struggling to deal with her new circumstances wrt her hand....there was a lot of damage done to her from her childhood. My heart ached for so much of what Nessa was going through. There were some amazingly heart wrenching scenes in this book that got me in the feels. The ending felt a bit rushed to me...it wouldn't have normally, but she was just so stuck in her thought processes, that it was hard to believe that she could get out of it so quickly....but maybe that was just me. I wanted to see little breakthroughs here and there to prepare for the final breakthrough. But then again, now I'm sitting here thinking about it and there were some small breakthroughs, so maybe I'm just on crack.

It almost felt like Jimmy's story really fell to the side and Nessa's story was the main focus. I liked him as a character, but I almost wanted a bit more.

Really loved the rest of the band members...mostly Ralphie and Jace (which surprised me). They added some much needed humour and heart.

I know this seems like a negative review, but it really was an enjoyable story. I love the way Ms. Pearl writes. I just wasn't as enamoured as I'd expected myself to be, and this review it me trying to figure out why. Sometimes I think I'm harder on authors I love than on others....

4 stars: I received an ARC of this book from the author for my honest review!!

I was totally unsure of this book for the first little bit...technically I'm not sure how much of the book, b/c I read it while waiting at the airport....which I guess means I was totally sucked into the story, b/c I finished it in honestly just a few hours. I was totally sucked in by sweet Marcus, but I couldn't always understand his infatuation with Kelly. I was NOT sold on her until later on in the book, and I'm not sure if I ever was 100% sold on her. I'm not saying she's not an interesting character, and doesn't have her own sympathetic plights, but I guess I just loved Marcus so much that she never seemed good enough for him, you know?

So after all that, how did I still come up with 4 stars?? Well, a lot of that was with Marcus. While his judgment sometimes came under question, he just never failed to make me smile (and occasionally cringe) at his antics and just fantastic outlook in life. Reading about his history and infatuation with Kelly really was cringeworthy, but I liked the man he became. It was nice to read about a guy who's a little bit dorky and unsure of himself, and not the usual 100% unattainable hunk. And I guess in the end, despite my reservations about certain parts of the story (the steam scenes were up and down for me, parts great, parts meh), the good parts just outshone the rest. I guess part of me is still waffling about making it a 3.5 stars, but I just had such a big smile on my face for good parts of it that I say screw it! It's my review, I'll do what I want! :P

I still need to go back and reread books 2-4 of this series, but I enjoyed getting a little bit of Chaos cameo in there, and catching a glimpse of Jimmy (and hearing about Nessa). And let me tell you, if you're a fan of Chaos, there was some fantastic news at the end of the book about that...

Ms. Pearl just knows how to write an easy to read story with likable characters. And if you've ever been a fan of the underdog guy, then this is truly the story for you. I even liked that he was a little bit on the shorter side, b/c I married me a shortie and they are underrated.

ROUGH WATER:

3.5 stars -- I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.

Well crap. This book didn't work out as well for me as everyone else. I'm not sure if it was just a mood I was in, but I just didn't feel all the emotions that I was expecting to. Now, that's not to say I didn't tear up at points...but I had been anticipating some bawling, and it just didn't come.

Part of it is that I had been anticipating a tragedy at the beginning of the story, and so maybe I just wasn't allowing myself to get sucked in because I was too busy trying to figure out what the tragedy would be? I honestly don't know. All I know is that my cold heart didn't shed a tear. And that made me sad, and so I put the book down and went to bed.

Now when I picked the book up again the next day, I started to get my emotions involved a bit more. I really felt for Justin and all the guilt he was feeling. He definitely made me choke up. I definitely felt for his character and what he was going through. And I actually found the initial part of the book and what they were going through as a couple dealing with the tragedy (badly) to be unfortunately realistic, and I could totally see it happening. And even though this book touches on one of my button issues that normally has me saying a big nope, it was handled in a very realistic manner and it didn't bother me too much (ie it had me squirming a little, but I made it through). Though it probably did affect my connection to Sarah a wee bit.... It's not that I didn't feel for her, but I just ended up connecting with Justin's character more.

In the end I just don't think I was in the mood for such a devastating book, and so I just didn't allow myself to go all in. I felt like the middle part was really well done, but I wasn't convinced with the resolution. I feel so cynical, but I feel like Justin's talk with Marcus was just too easy, and it all wrapped up faster than I was expecting. Again, I don't really know if this was mostly a personal (mood) thing, or if the book itself contributed, but in the end I just wasn't satisfied.

So yeah. I hate writing these reviews. I hate being the odd one out. I had really been looking forward to this book, but in the end it just wasn't really for me. :(

I've only read 2 of the 3 books so far, but I've enjoyed them. Below are my reviews of the 2 books I have read.

Troublemaker review:
This is my first book in the Song Bird series and I liked it. I'm not a fan of love triangles which is why I kind of avoided the earlier books, but when the author offered this one as an ARC, I figured why not. I like other books from the author, I just wasn't in the mood to read another love triangle. This is not one of those, but I have to say, that by the time I finished this, I felt more sympathy for the plight of nice guys everywhere. Marcus was one of those nice guys who spent the tail end of his high school years in love with the most unattainable girl. He went out of his way to get her to take real notice of him. Sure, she knew who he was, and that was someone completely out of her league. Fast forward five years and Kelly re-enters Marcus' life. Hired as a personal assistant to him and another talent manager, he figures now is his chance to show her that he is and isn't the same guy. On the one hand, kudos for being persistent. On the other? The man puts himself through so much to get the girl. And she was just so damn shallow that I struggled to understand why any man would bare that much of his soul for someone who was stuck on looks and prestige. It wasn't until much further in the book that you realize how much influence her parents had on some of those decisions, but it wasn't all on them. She finally had to realize that she is her own person and that her choices are hers and hers alone.

Although to be fair, Marcus kind of brought it on himself too. Part of me wondered why someone would put themselves through all the rejection for someone they thought they knew. I really liked Marcus. At times he came across a little mushy, but very genuine. Kelly was interesting. I didn't like how she treated Marcus, but as the story progressed, I came to realize that she could definitely be worse than what she was and she definitely had her soft spots when it came to her friends.

Overall, a good story even if I think in reality, odds of this actually happening would be rare. It takes a lot for someone to bend as much as these two have (both in their own way).

Rough Water review:
This is going to be a hard review for me to write. I struggled with Justin for most of the book. Perhaps because I could not relate.

Others are going to hate this review and that's ok. The author wants my honest opinion, and this is it. I loved Sarah which is how I actually finished the book. If I did not like her, it would have been hard to read. First, it is sad and very emotional. I got that. Overall, I ended up liking this book because of the things that made it emotional, but it took up until the end to get me back to seeing the good guy Justin is. I don't think he deserved anything that happened to him, but I also think everyone is responsible for their actions in reaction to bad situations and his just wasn't what I would have expected. Although I guess you wouldn't have a book without the conflict.

True Love
Another beautifully written story by Melissa Pearl. It draws you in and takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
Nessa's life hasn't been easy and Jimmy breaks her heart her automatic coping method is to run. A decision that will change not only Nessa's life but that of her fellow Chaos band member's. While on the run a terrible motorbike accident leaves Nessa broken both physically and emotionally as her main coping mechanism has been taken from her. Can Jimmy redeem himself and help Nessa both peace with herself both inside and out.
Can true love be found by two people who aren't quite perfect apart but are perfect together

Troublemaker
Really enjoying Songbird Series and how the stories and lives of the characters weave together.
You can read it as a stand alone but reading them in order you see more than if you read them alone.

I loved how Marcus never gave up on loving Kelly despite her misgivings about them being together and how people show themselves to the world isn't always who they really are. That the right person for you isn't always the one you imagine

Rough Water

wow what a read, this story the 7th in the Songbird series is seriously full of feels, a real rollercoaster ride of emotion.

The books starts of happy with the beautiful wedding of Sarah and Justin only to be followed by the gut retching death of Justin best friend and brother Blake. It cause Justin to retreat into a shell putting all his efforts in to a his job as layer while studying a law degree neither of which he loves or is passionate about. Mean while Sarah is also focused on her job as a designer. When Sarah makes a drunken mistake can these two former lovebirds find their way back to each other or is too late.

I can't wait to read the next books in this series

LOVE these books. After only having 'discovered' Melissa Pearl a short while ago, I have found myself absolutely devouring the Songbirds series. These three, just like the other six (plus a few novellas) are rapturous. They swaddle you with emotion, will make you laugh and cry and cheer and scream. So beautifully written, with glorious and surprising plots that don't feel stale.

I love Melissa Pearl's story! So this box set is perfect to enjoy a little of the wonders she writes.
These stories are beautiful and very well written, and all the characters are fantastic!
I highly recommend it!
I loved all of them!

Troublemaker (Songbird #6)
I loved this story, especially Marcus, he's a guy so sweet, funny and lovely, he goes all out to cheer people around him, sometimes forgetting his own happiness. Kelly is really a troublemaker, and in some parts I came to hate her for everything she did Marcus suffer, but at the same time, her life was not easy, always having to keep up appearances for the sake of her parents. A very well written story! With fun and some sad, but beautiful parts.

Rough Water (Songbird #7)
Sarah and Justin has everything to be the happiest couple in the world, but when a tragedy happens, things change completely for them, Unable to communicate, they end up moving away from each other and one more bad thing happens between them, which makes them have to face their fears and insecurities so they can be happy again. I loved the characters and what they have to overcome so they can take control of their lives again. Beautiful story!

Melissa Pearls Songbird Box Set is full of Beautiful Love Stories that will pull at all our heartstrings.

I enjoyed reading each and everyone of them. I love the emotional roller-coaster ride I went through with each book and was on book hangover after reading the boxset. I didn't want to leave the Songbird World I was happily sacked into.
