Skye Donaghie is having the worst day; she gets stranded twenty feet above the North Sea, her girlfriend dumps her and her neighbour is run over by her car – whilst fishing.
The only saving grace is that she reconnects with Natalie Jeffries, the gorgeous soccer star sister of her best friend, Sara. However, the reunion is bittersweet as it brings back memories Skye has spent the past decade trying to forget.
Faced with a family who abandoned her, and a friend who doubts the new found relationship, Skye must conquer her demons and lay the past to rest, or she risks losing everything.
Fox was raised in the north-east of England, in the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. She attended Durham University, where she gained a Ba (hons) in Education. Fox then moved to Cambridge after University to begin her teaching career, and taught mathematics and science for eight years. She truly loved it, but also knew her passion lay elsewhere. Since her memories first began to form, all she could remember was having her nose stuck in a book; when she was young and her friends were collecting Star Wars figures and Barbie dolls, Fox was starting to build her Agatha Christie collection; she used to play book seller with her great-grandma, another bibliophile; whilst grocery shopping with her mother, Fox would read one penguin abridged classic walking the aisles, then buy a different one to take home! Her love of reading paved the way for a love of writing, although it took a long time to actually give it a proper go. 4.2 stars. My fourth book by Brison which I also consider the best out of all of them. Even though romance plays a large part in this story I felt it's more about Skye overcoming her past trauma and complexes. It's about moving on, overcoming yourself, it's about her personal journey and it's written well.
Brison's usual formula from what I've read of her is usually a bad cover that masks a good but flawed story with likable characters that have depth. Where she usually comes short are antagonists who are caricatures and plot turns which she often forces. While she uses some well known tropes in this book, the antagonist didn't feel like a caricature and the last major plot turn was on the fence but I accepted it because it fits the story. The result is her best book yet.
Both main leads are likable and have depth though Skye is way more developed than Natalie because the story focuses on her journey. I identified with Skye personally because she has gone through some of what I've experienced so the story resonated with me deeply. This is not by no means a light read but I wouldn't call it heavy either. It never gets too gruesome in its descriptions but there is violence.
The topics of family, homophobia, domestic violence, bullying and self worth are explored well. I can't recall bullying ever depicted in lesfic so accurately so props for that. It's not a thing you mention in passing to motivate your characters like Brayden did in her latest book. It's a thing that scars you for life, a thing you try to fight off every single day. It's passed so why should you let it influence your life now? Easier said than done. And this book expresses that on point.
The supporting cast while not out of this world was good I think. The drama with brother might've been solved too fast, more buildup was needed but otherwise it all works well together.
Overall a solid read. Just please get a graphic designer for your next book, it would pay you back in spades in the long run.
I enjoyed Beholden so much I decided to see what else the author had out there. Turns out she has several books and they are all on Kindle Unlimited!! So I grabbed this one and it's sequel. I really, really enjoyed it. Finished it one day which is quite a feat for me. I love this author's style. I love the banter between family members. It's one of the few books that made me laugh and cry almost at the same time. The ONLY thing....and I can't say it was actually bad, just sometimes a little annoying....the author uses a lot of local lingo. With the books set in the England/Scotland I found myself having to google phrases. Not because I couldn't get the gist of what was being said...but I just wanted to make sure I was right.
Post hang-over, binge reading, it is perfect. Tears, laughter and genuine emotion grip from the start and don't let go. My sort of book - it's more Fox on the menu for this happy reader! 2nd read: Oh! wow!! Such class - an orgy of reading this & book 2 in one day. Totally love it!
I really liked both main characters and the cast of secondary characters were well used. I found a pivotal scene between one main and her brother, very moving. I really disliked those I was supposed to. I enjoyed the whole and especially finding out, that although this novel is complete, there is a sequel! The location, an area I know of, but don't know, also played a role. There are a number of UK set novels now, and I particularly enjoyed this setting.
Witty, well written romance Loved the descriptions of Holy Island and St Cuthbert. I was familiar with all the places mentioned in the North East. Very funny very witty. The scene in the A @E Department was priceless! Other parts showed the hurt of rejection by family members. It’s a not just a love story but of Skye coming to terms with all the hurt from her past, and homophobia from her family. I loved the characters of Skye and of course Natalie the footballer. Fox Brison is an intelligent and talented writer, and I shall be reading more of her books. I recommend this book.
Skye's life begins to disintegrate while she's on a trip to complete her thesis. It's the kind of the thing that happens when life is trying to get you on the correct path. It's up to Skye to understand why these things are happening while trying to open herself up to new possibilities. Natalie has to learn to be patient and allow Skye to work through her issues if she wants to have a future with her. Natalie helps Skye throughout her sabbatical, but I'm the end she may still allow her her insecurities to get in the way of her future.
This the first book I have read of Fox Brisons. And I thought it was really good. The characters were believable and I liked how their wasn't a villain in there. I really liked Skye's storyline line. I kept thinking she has the worst luck of anyone I know. Then Natalie shows up on her white horse. Definitely keeping this on my kindle. I also definitely recommend this book.
This a very good story, Natalie and Skye make a great couple. Nat is a professional soccer player, Skye is a history doctorate and writer and both had a crush since middle school. Skye is very insecure and feel unworthy of Natalie.... Not good enough but fate and love worked brought them together....I struggle to finish it because it's so long and full of history I got bored sometimes..... first book I read from this author..
