Jesinta Campbell is a former model turned television presenter who, in Live a Beautiful Life, wants to help us be more happy.

I borrowed this from the library because I am fascinated by celebrity books. I know that they are rarely written by the celebrity themselves but they distill what it is that the celebrity wants to impart to the rest of the world: the things about them that they think are important enough to share. These things are invariably silly and trivial yet give real insight into people whose professional success is often based on how they look. In these regards, Live a Beautiful Life does not disappoint. It is profoundly silly - for example, Jesinta suggests that a good way to prepare for a business meeting is by properly contouring one's face (no, nope, not even a little bit), that if one wants to lose weight, one should just give up sweets and alcohol completely (it's really not that hard, she says) and that being happy is intimately involved with a regular, consistent exercise plan (actually, that one is pretty good advice). It's clear that for Jesinta being happy is closely related to looking good and being thin, which is actually pretty sad! A beautiful life should be about more than one's appearance.

In addition to the beauty and exercise advice, there is also a recipe section. It's pretty much what you would expect from this type of book - a strong aversion to eating solid foods for breakfast, lots of avocado and not many carbohydrates. The first few recipes are introduced with detailed descriptions of Jesinta's reasons for cooking it (detox, superfood, etc etc) but she soon tires of this and the final recipes are introduced very briefly (her sweet potato recipe gets the short and sharp intro of "Yum!"). This section is where I made a critical error. I was thoroughly enjoying the book and all of its ridiculousness (yes, Jesinta, lunges *do* make one more happy), when I got sucked in by the very good food photography and tried the recipe for baked tofu. It was not good - dry, bland and definitely not in any way looking like the picture. I accept that I can't borrow a book for the sole purpose of poking gentle fun at it and still expect it to be a good cookbook and I should not have been sucked in by pretty pictures. But I was, and the bad tofu takes this rating down from three to two beautiful, ridiculous and silly stars.

I loved this book! I feel inspired to eat even healthier, dream bigger and work on my goals for 2018! Couldn’t have read it at a better time really!
Jesinta has put together an absolutely beautiful book and I feel honoured to have read it! Definitely one I will refer to in future, and I can’t wait to try some of her recipes!

I picked this up from the display at my library because I assumed it was someone with an education in health or nutrition, but it’s just some beauty queen with her single serving recipes.
