Jesse Kingston loves his job as a New York State forest ranger, the one thing he can commit himself to with the assurance that he won’t be hurt. And now, even that has turned on him.

His boss gives him an ultimatum—go home and get his head on straight, or hand in his resignation. “Home”—a family he’s never felt close to and a house with his name on the deed.

At least there he won’t have constant reminders of his best friend, Paul Jackson, who died in a firestorm. Yet he’s obsessed with finding out how that could happen.

Karen Ellis is four months pregnant with Paul Jackson’s baby. When Paul suddenly disappears, she contacts the office at the ranger station where he worked and is told he had perished in a wildfire.

Karen has suspicions about Paul’s death. Her baby needs a family and, for her own peace of mind, she needs an explanation to settle the questions she has about how Paul died.

She turns to Jesse for help, but will their investigation only get them killed before the love they’ve found with each other has time to grow?

Forest Ranger Paul Jackson died 3 months ago in a firestorm. His best friend, Forest Ranger Jesse Kingston has many questions that haunt him. He feels that somehow Paul was murdered.

Karen Ellis is now four months pregnant with Paul Jackson's baby. She knows that Paul was killed putting out a fire, but that is all she knows. She has suspicions about Paul’s death. He trained rangers. He’d won numerous awards for safety and was considered by his fellow rangers to be a top notch at his job. That he would risk his life by intentionally walking into a situation that had all the earmarks of becoming a deadly firestorm just didn’t make sense.

When Karen hunts down Jesse for information, he is reluctant to share details with her. For one thing, Paul was married and he's sure that Karen does not know this.

The two of them decide to investigate and someone wants them both to back away. Karen's apartment is trashed and someone has taken a few pot shots at them.

Who is behind all this .. and what did Paul know or see that someone wanted him dead?

This is a fast-paced Romantic Suspense. Characters are well defined. Some of Karen's actions are somewhat not credible, but this is fiction. Jesse is full of angst, being afraid that he cannot love or be loved since his father ignored him for most of his life. Again .. a little over the top. The suspense part of the story is very good.

My thanks to the author / Salt Run Publishing LLC / Netgalley who provided a digital ARC. The opinion expressed here is unbiased and entirely my own.

I really wanted to like this book. The plot sounded interesting but the instant and completely unbelievable love story just didn't work for me. Karen is pregnant and her boyfriend was killed while fighting a fire. She knows nothing about her boyfriend's family so she tracks down his best friend Jesse to find out more. Jesse is still dealing with the death of his friend and is sent reeling when Karen tells him she was Paul's girlfriend since he knows that Paul is married. However, he seems to know very little else about Paul and i had a hard time believing that they were really good friends. Within a day maybe two at most Karen is "falling in love" with Jesse and although at first we are led to believe she was in love with Paul the author changes that and has Karen almost immediately thinking Paul was more of a friend and the love was not very deep. Jesse and Karen set out to prove that there was something more involved in Paul's death then the fact that he made a mistake and got himself killed while fighting a fire. . Although there are a few twists and turns in the suspense portion the pacing was a bit slow. Jesse is so consumed with how his father never loved him that he has completely closed himself off and so I could never figure out what Karen saw in Jesse. He never really let her in and so while I could believe she may be in lust the love was completely ridiculous and rushed. Unfortunately this book was just okay and didn't really work for me.

A copy of this book was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.

A very contrived plot for this firefighter/romance story. The writing is simple and easy to read, but I thought there wasn't a great deal of character depth and the story was very underwhelming and formulaic. It started with pregnant Karen mourning her boyfriend's Paul's death, to insta-attraction as soon as she saw his friend Jesse and vice versa. This happened within the first few chapters. Sorry, I didn't like it much. My thanks go the NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in return for my opinion.

This is the first novel I've read by this author, and while I was intrigued by the plot summary, a romantic suspense novel featuring forest ranger/firefighters, a mysterious death, and an unmarried but pregnant heroine, it was simply an okay read, and I gave it 3 stars, primarily because it was an interesting concept, had an intriguing hero, was a good mystery and it was well-written, albeit slow-moving.

As the novel opens we first meet the heroine, Karen Ellis, a NY-based freelance photographer, who always felt that she was treated like a stepchild and a burden when compared to her sister, Elle, whose mother was deeply involved with Elle's beauty pageant career. Karen was having a relationship with Paul Jackson, a forest ranger, who, several months ago, was killed while fighting a raging forest fire in upstate New York's Adirondacks. She's 3-months pregnant with his child, a child she never even had a chance to tell him about. She's always dreamed of the perfect family, but during their rather short relationship, she never learned anything about Paul's family or his childhood, but she does want to inform his family about her pregnancy--wanting her child to have a family life she always wanted for herself. She also cannot believe that Paul died in a fire--he was simply too good at his job for that to have happened and she wants both answers and information. She decides to try to find his close friend and co-worker, Jesse, for those answers and that information, and she tracks him down to his small hometown in Bristol, NY. As luck would have it, she stops at The Diner in Bristol for a bite to eat and in walks Jesse. They notice each other immediately and are immediately attracted to one another, but Jesse knew absolutely nothing of Paul's relationship with Karen and while he thinks she's hot, he curtly and rudely brushes her off.

Karen is not easily brushed off and manages to discover where Jesse's family lives and goes there to continue trying to find out more about Paul. When she arrives at Jesse's sister Emily's home, the family is having a welcome home party for Jesse. Apparently his relationship with his now adult step-siblings and their families has been chilly at best, since he was sent to live with his father at age 9, and his father was a cold, remote, stoic man, who, rather than get to know his son, either ignored or punished him. He's surprised to find that Karen is welcomed into his family dynamic in a way he never was and he resents it. He's still attracted to her and she to him, and she's persistent enough to convince him that she believes that Paul died under very suspicious circumstances (so does he). When she finally lets Jesse know about her pregnancy, he's beyond shocked, since he knows that Paul was married and already had a family, information he keeps to himself.

As the story moves to the search for answers about Paul's death, we finally get to the suspense part of this romantic suspense novel. Attempts are made to stop their investigation--people in town are talking, Jesse's boss warns him to back off, and attempts are made on their lives. The whodunit part of this novel keeps you guessing until the end, but the on-again, off-again nature of the relationship between Jesse and Karen is too much like insta-love and Jesse's waffling between wanting her and wanting her gone become incredibly repetitive and annoying, as does Karen's non-stop weeping. She starts off as a strong, spunky woman looking for answers and turns into a weepy, clingy, pathetic character, and I found her more irritating than sympathetic.

I think this could have been a 4- or 5-star read had the action not lagged, had Karen and Jesse not fallen almost instantly in love, and had I not lost respect for Karen midway through the novel. I'm curious to read some of the author's previous work because I think she has the capacity to do a better job, and since this is my first encounter with her work, I don't know if this novel is par for the course or an anomaly.

Karen is still reeling from the loss of her boyfriend, Paul, a forest ranger who was killed while on the job. Since Karen didn't find out about Paul until a few weeks after his death, she was unable to attend his funeral or meet his family. The family he never talked about it. While that might seem strange for a relationship, Karen didn't push for information because she assumed, like herself, that family was a painful subject. But now at three months pregnant, a fact she wasn't able to tell Paul before he died, she's determined to find his family so they can be a part of her child's life. Her only source of information is Jesse, Paul's co-worker and best friend. Plus, maybe he can help her figure out what really happened to Paul.

Jesse, even though he was following orders, is still struggling with the guilt he feels over Paul's death. His boss, Hank, issues an ultimatum, forcing Jesse to take some time off or lose his job. It seems Jesse has been asking questions in regards to the true circumstances of Paul's death, and that is starting to make people uncomfortable.

When Jesse and Karen meet, they're both immediately aware of the attraction that's sparking between them, but for different reasons vow to resist it. For Karen, she feels it's unfair to Paul's memory and as for Jesse, he doubts his ability to love and be loved in return due to the actions of his parents when he was younger.

However, as Jesse and Karen start looking further into the details of Paul's death, it isn't long before their desire for one another becomes unresistible and the connection between them quickly grows into so much more.

What happens when Jesse, determined to keep Karen safe, pushes her away time after time? Will Karen realize why he's doing it? Or will she believe his words and actions instead? How did Paul really die? Was it an accident as they were led to believe or was he murdered? Can Jesse keep Karen safe? Is their a HEA for Jesse and Karen? Or will he believe she's better off without him?

One-click now and follow along as these two, connected by someone they both cared about, realize fate has other plans for them.

On a side note, the book continually refers to Diane and Emily as Jesse's stepsisters, when they are in fact his half-sisters as the three of them share a father, Jesse just has a different mother than they do.

Bound by Fire

Karen is a NYC based freelance photographer who recently mended fences with her sister and also recently learned her boyfriend and father of her unborn baby, Paul, a firefighter from Montana, was killed in a forest fire in the Adirondack Mountains. She wants her baby to have a family, something she lacked growing up. Paul didn't talk about family, but did talk about his best friend and fellow firefighter Jesse Kingston from Bristol, N.Y.. Karen drives to Bristol, gets a room at a B & B and stops in at the local diner.
Jesse has returned to Bristol after being told by his boss to go and get his head on straight. He stops in at the local diner, where an unfamiliar woman approaches and tells him she'd like to talk to him about Paul. Already in a foul mood, Jesse stomps away, only to find her at his family's welcome home party the next day. A few awkward conversations later, Karen and Jesse initiate an investigation into what really happened to Paul, something both have questioned. But someone else is equally determined to keep them from finding the answers.
Both Jesse and Karen come from lonely backgrounds, though Karen currently has a better grasp of what she wants from life. Jesse mostly wants to be left alone. There is an instant attraction, but Jesse is unable to reciprocate by leaving himself open to a relationship. That's compounded by wanting to impose distance to keep her safe from whoever is attacking them. The dynamics remain awkward between them for most of the book and I had a hard time finding the circumstances or the relationship "real". I was hoping for more.
This standalone KU Library read gets 3.5 stars and has an HEA.

Review: BOUND BY FIRE, by Elizabeth Sinclair
Rated 3 out of 5 stars by Iris Chacon.

Karen Ellis has just learned she is pregnant, but before she can even tell her fiancè, Paul Jackson, he is killed on the job, fighting a forest fire. Karen knows nothing of Paul's family but wants Paul's child to have a relationship with them, so she contacts the only source of information she can think of: Paul's friend and fellow forest ranger, Jesse Kincaid.
Jesse is still mourning his friend when Karen reaches him and introduces herself as Paul's fiancè. Now Jesse has something new to worry about: he knows Paul Jackson was a married man. Even more worrisome is Jesse's growing conviction that Paul was murdered.
The story follows Karen and Jesse as they try to determine what really happened to Paul. Soon they will find their own lives may be snuffed out by the same killer if they can't figure a way out of danger.
I had difficulty summoning up empathy for the characters at first, and the prose seemed to need more sparkle, more pizzazz. The plot lumbered at an oxcart's pace for about the first quarter of the book, but once it picked up speed, the book was enjoyable and pleasant reading. I liked the ending.
The story contains mild language and minimal sexual material; the assumption of adultery and pregnancy out of wedlock is a pivotal part of the plot.
This writer received an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest, objective review.

Karen is a freelance photographer who happens to be pregnant with her deceased boyfriend Paul’s baby. After a successful attempt to mend fences with her estranged sister she decides she wants her baby to have the family she never had. She decides to track down Paul’s family and friends. She also hopes to glean some more details into what happened to Paul.

Jesse is one of Paul’s friends and co-workers. He’s feeling guilt over Paul’s death because instead of following his instincts and following Paul into the fire that killed him, he followed Paul’s orders and stayed away. Now he’s asking questions about Paul’s death and he is soon ordered to take time off or lose his job. This raises suspicions. What really happened to Paul?

This book is definitely a quick read. The suspense was a little on the bland side but it was there. The resolution to the mystery seemed a bit rushed.

Speaking of rushed, we start the book with Karen still grieving over Paul and worrying about her unborn baby and quickly fall into Karen falling madly into love with Jesse. It happened so quickly that if you blinked you would miss it. Of course she ends up saving Jesse from his broodiness and the book ends about how you would expect. It was a little disappointing to say the least.

My first read of Elizabeth Sinclair, “Bound By Fire” starts off a bit too slow and the crux of the story doesn’t move as much as trying to create a relationship between Jesse Kingston and Karen Ellis.

Pregnant Karen is trying to get to the bottom of her fiancé Paul Jackson’s death in a wildfire and Jesse as the best friend of Paul has been trying to prove that Paul’s death was not an accident. With a common goal, Karen and Jesse end up spending time together uncovering clues, and the proximity leading to attraction. As they explore the sparks between them, a killer in plain sight will do anything to keep things under the ashes

The plot is interesting and not something new. It’s the narration and the lack of that grip on the plot, the lackluster suspense and thrill is what did not work for me. The story did drag in the middle pages. But the bottom line is that “Bound By Fire” can be read at least once. It’s one of those books that can be re-visited.

4.5 stars. This is an awesome contemporary romance about members of the forestry that fight wild fires. The author draws the reader into the story with hints about both the past and future. It's like a puzzle using words to see what you have in the end. The story contains intrigue, suspense, love and romance. Jesse has held himself away from his family for years, and loves the forest and peace it brings until a friend dies. Karen asks what happened to the man she loves and lost. She needs closure as she's having his baby. Both main characters are lost souls. I received a complementary copy of this book via NetGalley and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by this author.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I thought it was a great story!
Karen finds out she's pregnant, then that the father of her baby is killed in a fire. In trying to locate Paul's family, she meets his partner, Jesse.
Jesse is upset about his ranger partner being killed in a fire but he never bet on meeting Karen.
As they both feel something is suspicious about Paul's death, they start a little investigating of their own.
A few warnings and close calls don't stop them. But will they find the answers they're looking for or will the answers find them?
I give it 5 stars.

BOUND BY FIRE .by Elizabeth Sinclair. Story jump starts with two sister not being close, after father leaves. Mother drags the one to beauty pageants.
Now, wants to mend this, and have ties with a family. Karen is pregnant
And father of the baby, disappeared / or killed in a firestorm. Not knowing and wanting to connect with family of the father she seeks out answers. For me the story didn't have something to lead into, and to follow the characters. First time I have read her books, maybe the next one will.

This is a book for those that want to read about insta-love under ridiculous circumstances. A. I would never disparage an author over her/his work, we all put to much time into our writing for any of us to deserve that. I will just say this was not my cup of tea. Too rushed, the insta-love was not believable, but I will say her writing was good. I hope the author understands I am not criticizing her work, it just was not for me, and as I am a reviewer I like to be honest with my reviews.

This book started out strong and then just got really slow for me. Jesse and Karen both had bad childhoods that keep them from moving on with life. Add a pregnancy to the story and someone trying to kill them it all just became repetitive and slow for me. Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy sorry for a not so good review.

There is a lot of self reflection in this story. Jesse and Karen both have past issues, as well as present ones upon which to reflect. I shed a few tears over their problems. While I thought they jumped into their relationship a bit fast, sparks cannot be denied. There is some action and a mystery or two to solve. The publisher did provide a copy via Netgalley for my review.

Karen Ellis, a NYC freelanced photographer is four months
pregnant when she learns that the baby's father, Paul Jackson
a NY State forest ranger and ace firefighter has died in an
accidental fire. Karen feels something is off and is determined
to find out the circumstances regarding the Fire.
Jesse Kingston is a New York State forest ranger and had been
a very close friend to Paul. He has been put on administrative
leave after he was questioning the circumstances of the fire
that devoured his friend.
Karen and Jesse combines forces to unveil what really occurred
to cause Paul's death.
The characters were vivid, well developed involved in plenty
of mystery, drama and suspense around every turn.
I volunteered to read this book. Thanks to the National
Readers' Choice Awards Committee for the book. My
opinion is my own.
