Can't We Make Moral Judgements?

How many times do we hear the statement 'It's not for me to judge'? It conveys one of the most popular ideas of our time: that to make judgements of others is essentially wrong. In this classic text, the renowned moral philosopher Mary Midgely turns a spotlight on the ever popular stance in society that we should not make moral judgements on others. Guiding the reader through the diverse approaches to this complex subject, she interrogates our strong beliefs about such things as the value of freedom that underlie our scepticism about making moral judgements. She shows how the question of whether or not we can make these judgements must inevitably affect our attitudes not only to the law and its institutions but also to events that occur in our daily lives, and suggests that mistrust of moral judgements may be making life even harder for us than it would be otherwise. The texts and philosophers discussed range from Nietzsche and Sartre to P.D. James and the Bhagavad Gita. The Bloomsbury Revelations edition includes a new preface from the author.

About the author

Mary Beatrice Midgley (née Scrutton; 13 September 1919 – 10 October 2018[1]) was a British philosopher. She was a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Newcastle University and was known for her work on science, ethics and animal rights. She wrote her first book, Beast And Man (1978), when she was in her fifties. She has since written over 15 other books, including Animals and Why They Matter (1983), Wickedness (1984), The Ethical Primate (1994), Evolution as a Religion (1985), and Science as Salvation (1992). She has been awarded honorary doctorates by Durham and Newcastle universities. Her autobiography, The Owl of Minerva, was published in 2005.

Midgley strongly opposed reductionism and scientism, and any attempts to make science a substitute for the humanities—a role for which it is, she argued, wholly inadequate. She wrote extensively about what philosophers can learn from nature, particularly from animals. A number of her books and articles discussed philosophical ideas appearing in popular science, including those of Richard Dawkins. She also wrote in favour of a moral interpretation of the Gaia hypothesis. The Guardian described her as a fiercely combative philosopher and the UK's "foremost scourge of 'scientific pretension.'"

بين دفّتي الكتاب عشرون فصلًا عن مفهوم الأخلاق ونسبيّتها وكيف صار الحكم على المواقف حكمًا أخلاقيا (تدخلًا في شؤون الآخرين وتصرف لا أخلاقي) .. ثم كيف تناقض هذه الفرضية نفسها، فأن تحكم على الآخرين بأنهم يجب ألا يحكموا على الآخرين هو حكم..
وكيف أن فلاسفة مثل نيتشه وسارتر وقعوا في نفس الفخ، فخ الذاتية ونشر فكرة ترك الآخرين وشأنهم..

الكتاب مُشبَع بالأمثلة وآراء الكثير الكثير من المفكرين والفلاسفة والقانونيين مع ذكر وقائع وأساطير وقصص أدبية شاعت بين الناس واستلطفوها..

وازنت الكاتبة بين ذكر الرأيين أن تحكم أو لا تحكم، فعرضت آراء لفلاسفة أنكروا قدرة الإنسان على العيش بلا أخلاق أو أحكام أخلاقية، فالحكم جزء جوهري من التفكير، والوجود، ويستحيل بناء شخصية سويّة دون الثبات على قيَم أخلاقية صلبة وواضحة.

المحتوى جيّد جدًا إلا أن ترابط الفصول ضعيف وأطالت في مواضيع أحسبها جانبية، أو أن الترجمة جعلته يبدو مفككا غير مسبوك.

المترجمة كتبت توضيحات عديدة تُشكر عليها، وتخللتها معارضات إبراءً للذمة :)

بعض الفقرات احتجت لقراءتها أكثر من مرة حتى أستوعب الجمل، واضح أنها فقرات مُترجَمة والأسلوب غير عربي..

كتاب يتكلم عن اهم مسائل الفلسفة الاخلاقية وشرح للذاتية والفردانية والعزلة وكيف انها كلها تؤثر في الحرية الشخصية مما يؤثر على اصدار الأحكام الأخلاقية ومدى تقبلنا لها.

صراحةً الكتاب معقد جداً وترابط الفصول ضعيف جداً واخذت فيه فترة طويلة على ماخلصته. لو عندي قاعدة بسيطة عن مفهوم الفلسفة الأخلاقية ممكن راح احب الكتاب اكثر.

وددتُ لو قرأت الكتاب بلغته الأصلية، الترجمة لم تعجبني وتحاملت على نفسي لأنهي الكتاب، الترجمة رديئة وركيكة ويمكن لأي شخص أن يعرف ماذا كان النص بلغته الانجليزية..
على الرغم من ذلك، كان الكتاب في مجمله جيد نوعاً ما.
والكتاب كما يصفه العنوان المترجم: مدخل ميسر لأهم مسائل الفلسفة الأخلاقية.
أمما في عنوان الكاتبة(?Can’t we make moral judgment) فيضع سؤالا لا جواب له
وفي الأخير كانت الكاتبة تريد أن يتوصل القارئ إلى وضع حد لحرية أخلاقه والحرية المسموح العمل بها. وهذا في رأيي يفيد المجتمعات الغربية تماماً . فلا افراط ولا تفريط.
أما نحن لدينا في ديننا الوسطية، لا الغلو ولا التفريط.
ولو انه بالحكم من رؤية الاوضاع الحالية فهو متجه نوعاً ما إلى التفريط.

I was interested in the subject matter but quite disappointed by what Mary Midgley made of it. I have enjoyed some other books of hers and it took me a while to understand why this one didn't do it for me; at the end of every chapter I would look back on what I had just read and feel like I had learnt absolutely nothing from it, gained no new insight or additional context to make sense of a concept. She offered ideas that anyone who has devoted more than two seconds of thought to the topic would have already developed on their own, and presented them in a very plain way, with no added complexity that might make you feel like you acquired a deeper understanding of the question. Writing 'accessible' philosophy might be a noble goal but there is a way to do it without draining a matter of all philosophical depth and offering nothing but commonsensical, almost redundant remarks.

Examples: the conclusion of her chapter on the validity of cross-cultural moral judgments is that cross-cultural moral judgments are inevitable because different cultures are not separate monoliths but actually interact and have common historical origins.
... Of course?? Her extremely straightforward take on the matter of cultural chauvinism is that "peoples who are now distant from each other, and admit no kinship, show close similarities of language and culture". I sure am glad that the détour we made through Hesiod's Theogony and the Book of Genesis culminated in this groundbreaking conclusion.
She also makes a lot of obvious statements followed by several, repetitive, even more obvious correlations: "A great many moral questions do not concern relations between groups, but those between individuals. Here the kinds of moral scepticism that are popular today tend to take a different, more individualistic form. They choose a much smaller moral unit. Instead of claiming that each morality is valid only in its own group, they prefer to say that each is valid only for a single individual."
Moral questions that do not concern groups, but individuals, induce individualistic forms of moral scepticism. The moral unit is therefore smaller. It does not apply to a group, but to an individual. My brain is melting out of sheer boredom. Can we skip to the part where the moral philosopher I am reading actually teaches me something new about moral philosophy? Unfortunately this part was nowhere to be found.

صراحة موضوع الكتاب يحمل فكرة افضل بكثير من محتوى الكتاب. توجد مواضيع جميلة ومفيدة، ولكن معظم الكتاب كان خارج ما اردته او توقعته من العنوان. الترجمة ليست موفقه بشكل كامل ولكن لا بأس بها.

كان من الافضل ان المترجمة تنفرد بكتاب خاص فيها وتركز فيه على ديننا ومجتمعاتنا العربية، وان ارادت تستطيع ان تقتبس ماتريد من الكتاب. ولكن الكاتبة "ماري ميدجلي" ركزت كثير باستخدام امثلة واقتباسات واساطير غربية بحتة لا تفيدنا بتاتا.

ولذلك، اخترت كتابي القادم، وهو: "أزمة الفلسفة الاخلاقية. لماذا لا يمكن بناء نظام اخلاقي بلا دين؟"

Only God can judge me
جملة بنسمعها كثير ويساء استعمالها اكثر خصوصا من قبل الشاذين عن المعايير الاخلاقية لمجتمعاتهم. يراد منها الانفلات من القيود الاخلاقية والتي في معظم الاحيان تكون مفروضة في الدين اي من عند الاله مباشرة !

كما يتم اتهام من يلقي احكاما اخلاقية بأنه judgmental او احيانا critical. وهذا كله تنصلا من التقيد بالمعايير الاخلاقية وعيش حياة فردانية يتبع فيها المرأ هواه المنحرف في اغلب الاحيان.

الكتاب مبسط مقارنة بكونه كتابا فلسفيا ،وأسلوب سؤال وجواب جعله اكثر بساطة وأيسر للفهم.

أخالف الكاتبة في الكثير من آرائها لكن لا أنفي أن كتابها مهم في الجواب على من يرفض الأخلاق والأحكام الأخلاقية من بني جنستها

أما عن ترجمة د.زينب صلاح فقد كانت مثالية، أحببت تعقيباتها على الكاتبة وملاحظاتها وآرائها

قرأت النسخة المترجمة للعربية، للآسف ما قدرت اكمله ووصلت الى الفصل ١٥ ، عجبتني بعض الفصول فيما يخص النسيية الاخلاقية ولكن فيه استرسال متعب وكلام انشائي من الكاتبة فضلًا عن المترجمة اللي تحاول تظهر وجهة نظرها ببعض اراء الكاتبة.

This book concerns moral judgments - defined as decisions which cannot be mathematically or empirically shown to be correct, but instead are based cultural norms, personal opinions, and values. The title is somewhat misleading, because of course people can and do make moral judgments all the time. Indeed, it would not be possible to get through life without doing so. The argument that moral judgment inherently is impossible and not valid usually appears as part of an effort by the speaker to refute criticism of positions he or she knows are difficult to defend, and is based on relativism, which itself is a form of moral judgment. Instead, the author focuses on what goes into a moral judgment and what makes it valid or invalid, proper or improper, with an emphasis on real-world situations and plain language rather than the abstract, jargon-filled reasoning philosophers sometimes employ. All in all, this short book is enlightening and interesting, and would be worthwhile reading material for virtually anyone.
