While staying at a creepy seaside hotel with the Occult Club, Kyouichi finds out about Chloe’s questionable approach to completing the Ghost Diary. They butt heads and he decides he no longer needs her help – that the Ghost Diary will be completed by him alone! But with a man-eating mermaid on the loose, breaking up the team could spell disaster.
This review is for the entire series and will be copied to the other two volumes reviews... except each will have it's own unique section about that particular volume... You can check out vol. 1 HERE and vol. 3 HERE...
Sukami is the heir to a family of exorcists, and he is very close to his sister, the strongest of them, whom is writing a book about how to defeat these different ghosts, monsters and spirits. The evening after his sister and he defeats the nameless god from an abandoned shrine she goes missing. 6 years later a reaper comes claiming to be his sister's friend! Who is she? And will completing the Ghost Diary really reveal his sister to him?
The art is very typical but suits the story. The backgrounds are well done and the characters stand out from one another. The monsters have creepy designs for the most part and add a ton of atmosphere to the story. My favorite part of the art are the tiny reaction frames and humor frames that the mangaka works into the frame layout. These aren't typical and add a lot to the relationships between the characters. I ABSOLUTELY adore the covers! Color adds a lot of character to the art, they are why I wanted to read the series and I can say I'm happy I did!
The story is quite simple... Sukami wants to find his missing sister. He meets a reaper who says if they finish his sister's ghost diary then he'll be able to find her. He has a friend who loves the occult. He has a girl who likes him a lot and wants him to get over his sister. And they have two other odd friends who make the whole experience fun! Even though the story was simple I DID want to find Hanaichi (his sister) and I wanted to see Mayumi (the girl who likes him) rewarded for her great loyalty. The problem is even though I was motivated the world didn't support the intrigue. Even though there was a monster a chapter it didn't take much to solve them and move on.
There is this strange combination that makes up this world. Supposedly it is supernatural in nature and is made up of ghosts. In the beginning we are introduced to a nameless god. In the story this is called the occult. The monsters though are really urban legends. They don't really make sense but can be creepy even though there is no real chance we'll believe them. I think the art goes a long way in making the monsters less ridiculous but they really are a crapshoot whether you'll enjoy these chapter arcs or not. There is some fan service especially with Hanaichi and Chloe and some references to incest which is icky but a major motivation. It's treated almost like a joke with the reader. It's the occult club and how these characters INTERACTED with the world that was so great!
The plot of volume 2 introduces some fascinating monsters for the chapters... and we learn more about Kukuri and Onigashima. The two friends that make this series fun! Plus Yuushirou really throws his hat in for Chloe. Even though the relationships are a little bizarre I am quite taken with ALL of the secondary characters! The world is hard pressed to support such compelling characters but I'm so glad that the mangaka went for it and gave us a lot of juicy story for each character... Now Mayumi is shaping up to be the real protagonist!
An occult world where exorcists can help monsters that started life as humans back to the afterlife. Overstep your bounds though and you can easily become a monster yourself! Yes, the world is odd and doesn't quite make sense but the characters are great and make it worth the effort to read. The secondary characters even have their own compelling arcs that are fun and fit in the occult. Plus you won't see that end coming at all...!
BOTTOM LINE: Plenty of juicy story for the characters that rock this occult world!
Thanks to Diamond Bookshelf and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. This has not influenced my opinion.

The second volume featuring more glimpses in the past, not just for Kyouchi and his sister but also for Kyouichi's friends and Chloe. But also enough horror and mystery to keep you spooked out.
5 stories, and one bonus that explains a bit more about the past things that happened. 5 mysteries. First up is a mermaid that is wandering around a place, making delicious soup... well, maybe not so delicious once you know the ingredients. It was a pretty creepy and spooky, but also very gore and disgusting. I mean, that part with Chloe? OMG, I was just disgusted and had to stop from vomiting. Holy hell.
Next up is a story about a rubberman who likes to ruin couples, and we find out that he is infatuated with Chloe. While I didn't quite like that Occult's club president, I did feel sorry for him. This wasn't a very big favourite of mine, it was a bit bland and boring, and the monster of this story wasn't that interesting to me. Though there was one thing I did like and that was seeing that Mayumi is finding out her powers and being able to use them. At least a bit.
After that a story about aliens? I still have no clue if this was all true, or if it was just a delusion. Then again, the ending did show us something, so I guess it was true, but that just doesn't make sense. Though, sorry sudden light-bulb moment, it does explain why she stayed so tiny. But yeah, the story wasn't that interesting, and it didn't help that the focus were two characters I just don't quite like.
Yes, Kokkuri time! We see that Mayumi's powers are growing, and I am quite interested in how much potential she has. I guess someone needs to teach her some things as she is quite oblivious to what it means to be so spirit sensitive. This one was quite creepy, and I hadn't expect that to happen when Chloe pinned Mayumi to the wall.
And the bonus story which teleports us back to the past. I did like this one as we see Kyouchi's sister again.
I liked how the stories are seemingly without connection, but when you read them you see the connection, and see that things are getting closer to a conclusion. There is a bit of trouble between Chloe and Kyouchi, but thankfully they are able to talk about things. They both need each other. Kyouchi wants to complete the diary so he can find his sister, whereas Chloe wants her memories back. I am quite curious to if they can do this, plus what Chloe's memories are.
The art is still very fabulous, I quite love the style. Sure, some of the characters designs aren't that big of a favourite to me, but generally I am happy with how the characters look. Also big big plus points to that fabulous cover. It is just beautifully drawn.
Now, off to the next book, which is the final one in this series. I am quite curious how they will wrap up the story in those last chapters, will Chloe get her memories back? Will Kyouchi get his sister back? And will Mayumi and Kyouchi finally kiss or at least can we have a confession? Please?
Okay, this is still not good for the same reasons as the last volume (annoying, useless characters, tonal issues, lackluster story) but I have to get one particular thing off my chest: in the chapter where it's revealed Kukuri is actually possessed by an alien, this plot point is NEVER BROUGHT UP AGAIN. She is straight-up possessed by an alien, and that's that. Um, fucking WHAT?! There's literally NO resolution to this, she's just stuck sharing her body with an alien, ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! What was the fucking point of all that anyway?! That aliens exist in this world?! SO. FUCKING. WHAT?! Holy shit, I know I shouldn't be making a big deal about this, but why would you put it in the story that one of the main cast has been possessed by an alien this whole time and there's NOTHING that can be done about it?! Also, Sukami and Onagashima choose not to believe it, so WHAT WAS THE FUCKING POINT?!
The one thing I will give credit to in this chapter is that at least a price had to be paid for harming the aliens. So often in series like these the main characters will persuade the wronged party to let it go, but the aliens were having none of it and I appreciate that. That's about it, though. Didn't really like this volume outside of the supernatural stuff, really just want to read the final volume and get this series over with.
Although it still carries over all the flaws from volume 1, volume 2 is a small step up for me. Kyouichi, his friends and the reaper Chloe continue solving ghost mysteries, and thus adding more contents for the Ghost Diary. What I enjoyed the most out of this volume was the chapters that focused more on the friends, Yuushirou, Kukuri and Tatsumi. My favorite chapter was when Kukuri used hypnosis on Tatsumi, making him have a flashback of when he and Kukuri met and became close. Everything in that chapter alone brings a new side to this already supernatural/occult story, and hopefully it comes back for the next volume. Also, why are most of the ghosts/monsters appearing as little kids? Like?? Why??? I get that Ghost Diary isn't an overly horrific, ghoulish gore-fest... but still. Why can't there be adult-sized ghosts? Also-also... there's seems to be a bit of foreshadowing? I have hunches on a few things.
The first volume of Ghost Diary disappointed me. There was potential, yet it remained unfulfilled. Had I not borrowed the second volume from the library, I would not have continued the story. As I had already borrowed it, I decided to give it a read as I knew it would not take long to complete.
I enjoyed the second volume of Ghost Diary a lot more than I enjoyed the first. I would not label this a favourite, yet it certainly kept me engaged more than the first volume did. There was more to the second volume, sucking me in deeper. I have theories and expectations now, which were largely lacking in the first, and a desire to know how things will come together. It just goes to show how much a story can progress between volumes, and this one certainly managed to deliver more with volume two.
All in all, if you enjoyed the first volume, the second volume is certainly worth the read. If you were on the fence with volume one, as I was, it is worth reading to see if it hooks you more.
Interesting. seeing as how the next volume is the final one unfortunately I feel as though there wasn't enough evil spirits to add to the ghost diary or that it just needed a few until it was finished, but overall the ghost stories were very unique. I really love the art and the characters back stories. it was pretty cool to see one of their pasts. looking forward to the next volume. sad to see it end shortly tho.
Not quite as good as volume one, and with all the same flaws, but still a compelling story. I'm definitely going to pick up the final volume and see how this turns out.
