Anthony Neilson (born 1967) is a Scottish playwright and director. He is known for his collabo rative way of writing and workshopping his plays. Much of his work is characterised by the exploration of sex and violence.

Neilson has been cited as a key figure of In-yer-face theatre, a term used to characterise new plays with a confrontational style and sensibility that emerged in British theatre during the 1990s. He has been credited with coining the phrase "in-your-face theatre" but has rejected the label and instead describes his work as “'experiential' theatre”.

One of the earliest examples of in-yer-face theatre, Penetrator takes on the ptsd on different levels through three male characters which is important since the patriarchal trauma on men had not been displayed on the stage in such a manner enough. The vulgarity of language can be disturbing at times but that’s the effect the play is designed to give. overall it’s a play too abject for the tender heart rendering it one of the best experimental and experiential examples of the fringe. I have read other works by Neilson and i hope to see them staged as well.

Neilson's play probes into the male psyche but typically, two of the characters have a haunting past which is ripped open and re-enacted.
