Simple-ology: The Simple Science of Getting What You Want

Rate this book
Success is simple, and scientifically reproducible, if you know the 5 Laws

Simpleology proves that success and happiness are easier to achieve than most people think they are. In fact, people can almost guarantee their own success simply by following a few simple rules. These "5 Laws of Simpleology" aren't new; they've been around forever. Throughout history, these 5 laws have helped the world's greatest minds amass fortunes and forge new paths. But until now, no one has committed them to paper in so simple and straightforward a style as Mark Joyner has here. Applicable to any challenge or goal and irrefutably commonsense, these 5 laws form the basis for almost any successful person or endeavor. Simpleology explains the 5 laws in detail and shows readers how to apply them to every aspect of their lives.

The beginning of the book was very interesting. It teaches a lot about logic and how we are manipulated (and how we could manipulate others). All this was supposed to be the premise, to have you begin to think logically and scientifically and see reality for what it is. The last part of the book was supposed to finally get down to it, how to get what you want in life and how to apply all of this theory you learned to practical living. Just when I thought we were getting there, the book ended. To be fair, the author did say several times that to find out how to do this or that to use the software that came with the book. I borrowed the book from the library so I had no such software. Basically, he said, be focused on one thing and the fasted way to any point is a straight line, the end. All of the previous discussion on psychology, neurobiology, and logic, while fascinating, did not really seem to apply to his final chapter. But that's just me....

OK, if you're into systems, this is for you. If you like the scientific method, this is for you. There are those who are a little more into "creative flow," so maybe this book is not for you. I've read other Joyner books, even signed up for his online simpleology course, this one is his online course in book form. If you don't know much about how to achieve, the mind set, discipline, all the stuff you need to do, then this is good for you. I'm more advanced in this area (the reason why I quite the course--actually signed up as a case study for my motivational philosophies) so I was familiar with what he's saying here. If you are a procrastnator, need someone there to hold the whip over you, then I suggest the online course. He's got Simpleology 101, 102, and 103 (102, 103 advanced proper or "good" thinking) that are helpful. I'd go with the online course if you're looking for all the details. If you're more familiar with success principles, maybe the book. Or if you don't want to spend the money right away on the online course, buy the book to see if the course is right for you. Joyner has been around for a while and his methods are pretty sound.

This book actually caused me to go back through my entire list, and re-evaluate all of the other books on the list - this book actually deserved 6 or 7 stars, rather than the maximum 5. Seriously, it's that good.

It's the only book that I've ever read that covers influence, hypnotic trances, Korzbyzki, e-prime and Polya all in a single book. And it's a good read, too.

And it comes with a web-2.0 time-management system. And an MP3 version. And videos.

It's *that* good. This is easily the best book I've read in my life, by a large margin.

I was attending a seminar in Surabaya on November last month, and suprisingly the speaker Pak Tung Desem invited Mark Joyner to present his simple.ology, it was superb!!!

This book gave me lots of new views in seeing what become "invisible walls" in my life, first chapter might seems confusing, try to work together in Joyner's website http://www.simpleology.com and the simple.ology 101 is amazingly gave 20 simple lesson which might change your life, I'm move to simple.ology 102 now...

Some of the science was compelling, but to get the gist of the book, reading the last chapter would have sufficed. There were several times throughout the book where I made a conscious effort to figure out what the author was trying to relay to me and I honestly couldn't say where he was going with it. Joyner does seem to know what he's talking about, but I think he could have utilized his own theory of having a laser focus to get what he wants (us to understand "simpleology") a bit more.

This book would be more aptly tittled "How To Keep Others From Getting What They Want Out of You"! Mark has a great way of putting the fundamentals of common sense into a nice nutshell of philosophy. My take is that we all should live our life like a knife that cuts though the bull and focuses on the target. Eliminating distractions and discerning my "invisible walls" are the areas that really hit home for me in this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone seeking a good road map to life in general;-)

For some reason I have been reading a lot of these "achieve your goals" books out of curiosity. This one comes with online software designed to help you achieve...anything. But for someone like me, who doesn't know yet what exactly I want out of life, it just didn't cut it. The middle of the book is irritatingly verbose. Skip it and just remember this: if you want to get something done quickly and well, don't get distracted with other things and focus all your attention and energy on what you'd like to achieve. That's the main and most useful point Joyner makes in the entire thing.

Personal Ratings : 3.2

The author promises simplicity, but the body of the book is a collection of scientific practices, theories and the reader needs to have a great deal of patience to wait for the punchline. The last two chapters are the best in the book. In fact, I would give the last two chapters a 4-star rating.

The key insight of this book is the rationale thinking that the author provides at the end about going after goals in a straight line and how to evaluate this.

Recommended only for the patient reader.

This was a very short audio book. It briefly touched on many topics that I found very interesting, and would have loved for the author to go into more depth on. But then he bounced onto something else.
I also failed to see how his touching on this wide array of interesting material, related to his stated goal in the title of the book called “The simple science of getting what you want.”

Perhaps in his effort to keep it “simple”, he shortened it more than he should have. I would have preferred a slightly longer more in depth book.

This book is a quick read, and I enjoyed it. But it's more about how to identify and fix flawed thinking patterns as a prerequisite for getting what you want.

As others have pointed out, the section about getting what you want is comprised of 5 laws at the end of the book, just 14 pages total.

Nevertheless, these laws are important to understand, and Joyner's companion software available at simpleology.com is extremely powerful for helping you get what you want out of life.

A sale's pitch for additional material that is not in the book and it is 'mostly' free. However, I do like the ideas in this book that emphasize importance of science rather than cults and dogmas, and suggest that math such as tautology and logic can help us develop skills that could be applied in everyday reasoning.

I wanted to give Simpleology.com a try to help me get more organized with the tons of projects I have on my list so I signed up a week ago. Then I realized that Mark Joyner, the creator of Simpleology as well as the author of a few very popular marketing books, wrote this book a few years ago. So I gave it a try... After a few minutes, I realized this book is full of anecdotes to illustrate a few ideas that could be told in a few sentences. You can skip the first three parts and just read the last part on the Simpleology principle, and even then, it's so obvious, you've probably tried it before or are doing it right now. The Simpleology.com concept also required you to train every single day to learn how to navigate the website, repeating the same steps every single day until the system decides you have mastered them. This system may work for some people, but it's not for me. I think I'm more of the old fashioned pen and paper type so I can have my lists right in front of me, every single day. I do like the idea of a "dreamcatcher" list, where you jot down anything that comes to your mind while you're working on something important. That helps you postpone it for later while keeping on track with your current project. Now that's a great idea that I'll be using from now on to avoid distractions.

I really enjoyed Mark Joyner's other book, The Irresistible Offer. He's clearly an expert marketer and knows what he's talking about in that arena. Unfortunately, Simpleology is nowhere near as good. For one, the book is largely a plug for his "web cockpit" software. I hate books whose sole (or primary) purpose is to sell me something. Despite that, I kept finished it since I know from his other book that he's a smart and insightful guy.

Simpleology is basically an explanation of the author's own utilitarian epistemology and instructions for how to apply it to your decision making process in a way that will help you reach your goals.

It's not so much that it's a bad epistemology, it's not, it's just not novel. In a nutshell it is this: challenge your assumptions, use the scientific method, use logic and learn to recognize logical fallacies, know your goals and take the most direct path towards reaching them.

Decent advice really, and for someone who hasn't thought much about how they want to determine truth, there are some interesting starting points in this book.

Overall though, my review is "meh." Not bad (other than the slew of plugs for the "web cockpit," that was terrible), not great.

I remember really enjoying this book. It has helped me become more sceptic to whatever message authorities, media etc wants us to believe. I wish I actually followed more of the "science" behind this book.

The core concept is: follow the straightest possible line towards your goal, make adjustments along the road. Kind of hard to do when I don't know exactly what I want from life.

But often I find myself sidestepping more than stepping forward, even with things I just need to get done (so: If I just took the straight path I'd finish faster and stress less because I wouldn't have such a bad conscience about not taking that straight path. It's all good though; I've started to think I'm ok with whatever happens - because it already happened).

Since it's been almost 10 years since I read the book I can't say if I still like it. I remember thinking it was one of the better self-help-books though.

It's bizarre when my first review on Goodreads is about my least favourite book. I tried to finish this book because in a way it's quite easy and short to read.

For me, the cover of book is really eye catching. The whole concept is also tempting. But Simpleology, turns out too simple and boring. The author tries to make it simple as much as he can, but the book doesn't focus on any specific points which make the ideas too plain.

The writing style is a bit annoying sometimes. I feel like reading commercial ads which manipulate me to try the website for this book.

Of course, it doesn't mean reading this book is a waste of time. I just wish the author could make it more informative and "complicated".

The name of this book really intrigued me, but once I opened it, it was a big let down. I picked it up at the library at the reserve desk so I didn't peruse before taking it home. If I had, I would have left it on the shelf, but since I went to all the trouble of picking it up, I figured I might as well read it. The book really doesn't give you any sort of guidance on the topic of simplifying your life. It simply tells you how to think for yourself. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to learn that lesson a long time ago.

This book wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. I expected another book on the law of attraction similar to "The Secret" and other books. But this one was different. It's sprinkled with advice throughout which sounds common sense and simple but the advice is comprehensive.

Joyner goes beyond where many other books in this field have stopped, offering practical steps to apply to your daily life. Some of those steps at first sound odd but after you think about them you realize this guy's giving you some sound advice.

Although there was definitely some good info in this book, especially the stuff about logic in daily life and the universal model, I can't say that it's anything truly groundbreaking. Of course, I suppose that's the simplicity of it, but I felt a little like I was reviewing things I already knew. Despite that, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants some pointers on how to utilize logical strategy in their daily life and how to implement a malleable model of the world around them in order to better achieve their goals.

This one was a little too self help, buy into my product for my liking. I think that the sections on logic and reasoning as to why people fall into traps was quite good. They made for several great lunch time conversations with coworkers. I was left expecting more. I think David Allen's Getting Things Done is a better "system" and articulated more coherently. This book is good if you are wanting to understand how to debate and use logic better.

This should be titled "the parts of an argument" and "how not to finish a sentence." GOOD GRIEF! This man ended every chapter (or sub-chapter) in the middle of a sentence that was supposed to lead into the next few sections. Rather than doing that, all he had to do was list the items he was about to go into detail about.
