Oh man, so much emotionally going on in this story. This is probably one of the few interracial romances that I can remember reading where the “other side”, the ugliness of what can happen in an interracial relationship is put on blast. Ideally, we love to read about love having no color, but in The One That Slipped Away, the underlying question is: Is love enough?

Harrison Haughton is a white boy. A fine white boy. And he attends an HBCU (that’s Historically Black College/University for those of you who don’t know.) This isn’t a foreign concept because there are more than you think. TaMia Jamison is a black girl. A beautiful, quiet, withdrawn black girl. She attends the same HBCU, and she’s dealing with her own internal struggle: What is “blackness” and can it be defined beyond what you look like on the outside? I think this is a question any black person can or has asked themselves at some point. Mia, the geek, becomes Harrison’s, the jock, tutor, and there is a quiet attraction, but both are afraid to act on it for different reasons.

The story starts in the middle and through series of flashbacks, we learn the history of Harrison and Mia and what ultimately leads to their breakup. With all of these outside influences rooting and plotting against them, we witness the drama unfold through some often difficult and maddening encounters with family and friends who are very adamant and transparent in their objection to their union. All of this makes for one very engrossing read. It’s nice to read a different perspective regarding interracial romance where it isn’t all wine and roses yet the couple does manage to find their way back to one another in spite of it all and prove after all how resilient love truly is.

** I received an ARC of this book for a honest review. I have not been paid for my review. **

This is Mia and Harrison's story. This is a story of what can happen when two people fall in love from different cultures/races. This is a black woman/white man story.

First of all this story does not give you the warm and fuzzy feeling. This is a realistic view of what it can be like in an interracial relationship. Mia and Harrison fall in love whilst at college. Harrison is attending a historical black college which seems usual but there is a reason for this which the story will reveal.

Neither Harrison's mum or Mia's parents want their relationship to work. Out of the parents I would say that Mia's were the most vocal and the most hurtful. Harrison's mum just tried to pretend indifference to the relationship. What I found most emotional about the story is Mia parents rhetoric toward Mia. They send her to all white schools, raise her in an all white neighbourhoods and then when black folks tell her she thinks she white and white folks just don't want to know her, they don't seem to think they have any responsibility in this. They placed her in an impossible situation. Should they be surprised when she comes home with a white boyfriend? I think not. Even though at the same time they harp on about the black struggle and how she should view white people.

As a mother I will pass on the same advice to my children that my father passed on to me. He said he would never presume to tell me who to marry, he would point out in his opinion what he thinks the obstacles might be and then it would be up to me to decide if I love this person enough to commit. Parents, in my view should never block or stand in the way of their children's love life. Unless they are marrying someone who might abuse or kill them. We cannot choose for our children. If we tell them who to marry, this will come back and bite us in the future.

Mia's parents felt she should marry a black man and they felt Michael was the right choice. I disliked Michael on sight, he did not love Mia he wanted status.

Harrison, I felt made a lot of mistakes but who doesn't when you are in love. However, the one piece of advise his friend gave him which he should have embraced and especially when in an interracial relationship is "your partner comes first". If Harrison had embraced this advice especially as it pertains to his friends and family some of the hurt Mia endured would not have happened. This also contributed toward the breakdown in their relationship. When Mia tried to share with him the bias of his friends he did not listen and thought she was being difficult.

I read the book in one sitting. I found the story riveting but totally heartbreaking the amount of suffering that the couple endured due to interfering parents and friends. In all relationships communication is key and Mia and Harrison allowed theirs to breakdown.

I think the story makes one reflect on the price of love and whether one is willing to pay it.

Ok read

3.5 and I'll tell you why YES, this was a good book but it WAS missing something I did appreciate the author showing the diversity of people and allowing us to see the racial tension that interracial couples go through today! I would have loved to see Ethan going off on his so called friends, but you see him having words w/his mother. Mia on the other hand spoke her mind finally to her parents but she couldn't say anything to The fiancé/remember the beginning where the fiancé and Ethan were suppose to have some kind of business relationship WHat happened? I think i would have loved 2 see Catherine interacting with Autumn.Mia blamed herself for not telling Ethan about Autumn but why wasn't it touched on that she tried!! These elements maybe petty but in my opinion they stood out!

This is my review and how I see it. In The One That Slipped Away, author LaShawn Vasser, tells the story of Harrison Haughton and Mia Jamison and thier love gone wrong. Mia and Harrison met at a HBCU, the twist is Harrison is a white male), where Mia became his friend and tutor. They built a friendship of trust and eventually fell in love, but thier problem start once Harrison introduces Mia to his parents and the mother takes issue with Mia, because she isn't like them.

Harrison's father dies and the problems for this couple only pile-up from there as Harrison's friends and mother consistently undermine thier relationship. Harrison is too wrapped up in other things to see what is happening then he makes a choice which cost him his relationship with Mia.

Six years later they come face to face, it is a reunion, nobody saw coming. Mia's life begins to implode, in ways she could not imagine. Mia has been keeping a secret from Harrison.

The character's in this book I could have done without and wanted to throat punch where Harrison's' mother, his ex-girlfriend, his friends, Mia's parents and her fake fiancé.

I can understand why Mia kept her secret from Harrison. I am glad she finally put her parents in their place. This story had real-life situations and it allow me to related to the hurts and pains of Harrison and Mia. There was enough blame to go around and too many mistakes were made by both parties and the new that and were able to work through it.

My favorite part of this book was when Harrison jack-up Michael, Mia's fake fiancé.

I really enjoyed this story even thought some parts were a little touchy for me.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read interracial romance.

This is my review and how I see it.

I have read every book from Lashawn Vasser, but I will have to honestly say that this book was the best book to date for me. I literally had to take sometime to think and let this story sit before I could even write this review.
A lot of authors write interracial love and romance stories with the intent of making the reader feel good about love and give the readers the fairytale experience. Sometimes we can forget the real barriers and issues in a relationship and especially with interracial relationships. I love how Lashawn brought out the reality of many interracial relationships with Harrison and Miami . It literally broke my heart that these two had to go through everything they went through. Sometimes family can be your biggest enemy as with both of their families. After all was said and done, they learned two valuable lessons; communication is key to any relationship with honesty and being united and standing firm in how you feel.
I am happy that everything worked together for their good and even though they had to go through all the drama to get to where they ended up, it was all worth it in the end. With everything that has happened in the last few months regarding race in our country, I am so glad that Lashawn tackled this subject with open abandonment. This story was a real eye opener about the reality that couples face within an interracial relationship. Well done and very well written.

Sign of the Times

The subject matter is so relevant in these tumultuous times; race relations. However there is so much more than race going on here...you have controlling parents on both sides, manipulative "friends", identity crisis and yeah...more racial overtones.

Harrison and Mia had so many obstacles and due to their immaturity, the obstacles won. You are have an interracial relationship to contend with, but in addition you get scheming friends, manipulative parents and a dude dealing with a death of his dad.

Harrison's dad dying left him reeling and he didn't know how to handle Mia and her concern over how his friends and mom were treating her, his needy mother and Mia's crazy parents too. He went looking for an escape...not intentionally but it shattered his relationship with Mia.

Mia was a wimp (she was young) and a people pleaser. She hadn't realized yet you can't please everybody but her mom took the cake. She played a big part in Mia's identity issue...not sounding black enough for black people but definitely not fitting in with whites, either.

Bless their hearts...a lot of these characters needed a good throat punch but thankfully, Mia had her cousin Sheena.

I know I'm rambling but bottom line is....this is another great Vassar story that touched on a lot of social issues today. Kudos to the author!

Okay let me see...this was not one of my favorite of LaShawn. I think for me I was Kinda upset with Mia for not standing up for herself in different situations throughout the book. She was bullied and disrespected by Harrison her parents and that heifer Harrison's mother and friends. She thought/caught her man in a compromising situation and still she is calm and reserved. I found myself saying throw something at him slap an ish, I guess she still wanted to remain ladylike. Then there's Michael and his emotional abuse and you KNOW what else he did and still she moved past that without so much of slapping his azz but it is what it is. I just felt Mia allowed so much to happen to her and not confront it. Maybe it was how she was raised in a system where her parents who is conscious about their blackness did not allow their daughter to get in touch with hers. I am not talking about how many portray us as angry but self love never hurts anyone. Mia who was in total contrast with her cousin who never let folks get away with stuff. This book all in all is doing what it's suppose to do...conversation and I for one can't wait for the next one.

You can't control other folk's life,

The choice who one decide s to be with is their's and their's alone. Now and Ethan struggled with friends and family fighting against their relationship. The author detailed all of the nuances interracial relationships have in society today. Keeping a big secret didn't help. Ethan/ Harrison was forced to grow up fast and take on a huge responsibility of himself, his father 's company, his mother and Mia at 23 years old. Her could not see the manipulation of his mother and friends. After 6 years and with the elephant in the room being out in the open, both Ethan and Mia have matured enough to draw the line in the sand with both of their families. They both realized that their love for each other had not waned and are determined not to let their families interfere with their HEA. I enjoyed reading this story. The author wrote about a complicated subject affecting people today. She included certain sayings I've heard all my life like "you have to work twice as hard to be considered half as good." LaShawn made these characters relatable and believable.

Kudos

In relationships we have to make mistakes and grow from them. We tend to overlook the obvious trying to keep the peace. Not realizing at some point we're hurting someone in the process. A hurt that can destroy. This is what happened with Mia and Harrison. Luckily the error of those mistakes righted themselves. Another well written story from LaShawn Vasser.

If you don't want any spoilers please stop right here

Sooo...i don't know if i liked this book or not, but i'm still giving it 4 stars cause the emotions were so high my heart was in my throath most of the time. And i could not put it down.

What I did not like: If i'm reading books i like fantasy and a guy that almost cheats is not my fantasy guy😡😡😡. Before that there relationship was bad. They had been friends for yearssss and it still feels like they didn't know each other well.
I think what hurt the most is the fact that when he was with Liberty he never cheated on her, he never even kissed Mia in all those times even when he and Liberty would break up constantly, but then when your in a sers relationship with Mia you go and do her like that and he even admitted that he would probbly have slept with his secratary if Mia had not seen them in the office.

I don't know, i have finished this books a couple off hours ago and i still can't sleep. I really wished someone had warned us that there was cheating in this book. And No it is not considered cheating only if the act was completed. Evan was very selfsentered and that's yust a big NO for me.

Rule number one in a relationship: If you do not trust your partner more than anybody else in your life, DO NOT move in with them, it's a recipe for disaster and Ethan was yust a mess all around when it came to treating his woman right.

The racial issues in this book goes to show that even tough people have black friends sometimes that doesn't mean they really understand us. When your in a relationship with a black person your gonna need a whole new level of understanding than when you simply have black friends and accept that your family anf friends can be racist.

I also didn't like the fact that she didn't get to be angry with him when he came back cause she hid his kid for years. I hate when authors do that. Anytime a guy does something terible they will find a way to turn it on the heroine to make her appoliges. I want to see some groveling from the man. Ethan was a millionaire and all he did to try and get Mia back was call and sent a LETTERRR Really big guy. He didn't even try.🙄🙄🙄🙄

Overall i think my biggest issue with this book is that even tough it tells us Even loved her a lot, his actions proved otherwhise. He never fought for their relationship and the ending felt rushed. We didn't get to see them in a real relationship. Did Ethan even learn anything from his mistakes?? I can't even talk about Mia, she just took the guy back. Was it out of quilt for not telling him about Autum?? There are a lot of unfinished answers in this book.

But yeah, it was a very exciting read and imma try her other books again mby, but i need some time to get over this one.

This book had me feeling all kind of ways. Mia and Harrison loved each other. They struggled to sustain a relationship that was filled with problems. The biggest of which was race related. Their relationship was doomed right from the get go. Mia struggled with identity issues and never stood up for herself. She came across as insecure and naive, trying to ignore the problems in her relationship with Harrison.
Harrison... Oh how I loved Harrison but he on the other hand had his head stucked in the clouds and never notices much of what was happening around him, with Mia and his mom and his friends.

Mia's parents were a mess. They rejected Harrison and wanted her to be a certain way, yet while growing up all they did were exposed her to and teaches her a totally different way of life. Hence her identity issue.

My emotions were all over the place. I experienced sadness, disappointment and outrage.

Sadness because I knew they both loved each other and were doing a terrible job of fixing what was wrong.

Disappointment because with all the crap Mia was taking from everyone, she never stood up strong enough to defend herself and their relationship.

Outrage because Harrison's friends were so rude to Mia. They straight out undermined and dismissed her as someone who was an important part of his life

Interracial relationships are sometimes hard to maintained. We get to sit back and watch Mia and Harrison's relationship unraveled before they figured out that love conquers all. This was a great read. Thank you Ms Vasser.

Awesome , so worth the read!

I absolutely love , love this book! This is a book I will read and reread many times ! LaShawn has outdone herself . I saw myself in Mia on so many levels. The struggles with her self love and acceptance and stand up herself and finding her voice. The love between her and Harrison was a true as it gets yet the both allowed others to get into their heads and cloud what they both know what was true. They both needed to grow and grow into themselves . LaShawn has masterfully handled a subject many black women have and continue to deal with , being comfortable in one's skin and dealing with prejudices , inside and outside of one's own family . With their truths being revealed , Mia and Harrison claimed their hearts .

Harrison & Mia

Harrison and Mia met in college, became best friends and lovers later. Falling in love since the get go really, but circumstances and other reasons stopped them from acknowledging their love Tragedy hits Harrison real hard, and he is just navigating life..Through it all, Mia always there for him.. She left everything to be with him... But life can be a B**** , and family,so called friends,ex-lover etc... Trying their best to separate them. Harrison oblivious to it all, even when Mia voiced her feelings and concerns, if anything he became annoyed.,and lead to other things that finally broken the camel back. Mia left, and Harrison finally had a wake up call.
There is so much more to this story... It hard to review it the way I truly want to. So I'm leaving you with this: IT IS A GREAT READ!

Amazing

This book was a great read of Mia and Harrison. It was great to see how their journey started to how it eventually ended. These two individuals had some many factors and influences that were against them and their relationship it was a surprise they lasted as long as they did. Mia and Harrison's story really goes by the saying "if love you love something set it free, if its meant to be it'll come back to me". Really glad she didn't end up with Michael, that guy was all types of wrong for her. Lashawn has us clamoring for more of her books with that awesome teaser at the end!!!

A lovely story

The story of Harrison and Mia's relationship was well worth the read, the love they shared was very special they had to battle parents and friends to keep it alive.
I liked how realistic this story was, when dealing with grief, and an interracial relationships, especially if both parents have got bigoted opinions. The only thing I didn't like in the story was the author didn't spend enough time on their present relationship and really how they got back together, that bit felt a bit rushed and could have, in my opinion, been more detailed in the book. On the whole this is a lovely story and worth reading.

There comes a point in time when you watch a movie or read a book that will make you cry, well I can sure add this to the list. Like all LaShawn Vasser books, I LOVED this book. There were times I wanted to slap the characters, but shouldn't you want to, that just truly means you've connected with the characters in some way or another. What I've always loved about Ms. Vasser books are they are relatable, at least to me.

When reading The One That Slipped Away, you'll see how the two main characters grew and made their share of mistakes. But don't we all...

Another compelling story from LaShawn Vasser!

Mia and Harrison loved each other but they let family and friends get in the way of their relationship! Now it's years later can they find their way back to each other. I really enjoyed reading this book and you will too! LaShawn's a fabulous writer and will take you on the roller coaster ride of emotions. I laughed, cried and was ready to kill off a couple of characters too!

Brilliant

Another excellently penned book by LaShawn Vasser. This author is smoking hot, the characters in her books are so on the money. Love that the heroines are independent and well educated. Love that she is so on point with her books. If you have not read any of her work what are you waiting for you will not be disappointed I guarantee you.

The writing was good in this book, my prpblem(s) are as follows. 1) If you start out with the ending of a book it shouldn't be that long from beginning to get to the ending where the story began. 2) I was very annoyed at the heroine cause was to weak for her own good. Almost to the point of total irritation

Wonderful engaging story

Excellent book this woman always knows how to write a story that keeps her readers hooked from the first few words until the last! Harrison and Mia were both great MC that had to get through their problems. When Harrison broke her heart so did mine. I loved how Ms Vasser took the reader back in time to tell their story. Great work as always
