A Reason For Hope: Gaining Strength for Your Fight Against Cancer

Rate this book
Hope is a strange commodity. When we don't need it, we rarely think about it. But when we need it, we need as much as we can get. So it is for people who are dealing with cancer.

As a chaplain for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, author and pastor Michael S. Barry has an insider's understanding of the cancer patient's need for A Reason for Hope. With warmth and wisdom, he offers the reader scientific evidence and Scriptural principles that fuel the will to live and build the hope that can heal. If you have cancer—or are in a support role to someone who does—here is A Reason for Hope.

"A Reason for Hope is one of the most important books on cancer survival available. It is a must-read for cancer patients as well as for the family and friends who support them." – Jerry K. Rose, Cancer Survivor and President, Total Living Network

it's aggressively optimistic. it would be helpful for someone diagnosed in the early stages as a guide on a helpful perspective while fighting cancer.
I personally just felt that it would be discouraging/giving false hope to someone dying from cancer. the author does attempt to propose the worst case scenario but it felt lacking.

it is a short easy read. and a good reminder of hope for someone battling cancer.

A satisfactory, very lay level book on struggling with cancer from a Christian perspective. As a minister officiating the funeral of a tragic cancer patient, I found the book to be too "charismatic" in its optimism regarding healing. I believe in healing, but it just doesn't happen at the frequency the author suggests.

Good book

I have recently been diagnosed with lung cancer after 3 month's of recuperating a liver transplant. The book showed me many Spiritual and mental adjustments for what I now face.

A Reason for Hope by Dr. Michael S. Barry is an exceptional book. In his book he tells us that many things contribute to cancer and how he shares with us the different things that need to be done if you have cancer.
Dr. Barry is the first to say that if it is your time to die then God will take you, but if it isn’t your time these steps will help you.
One amazing thing Dr. Barry said is that people have been cured/healed from every type of cancer. So it is possible to beat any type you have.
He said the main thing is a positive attitude to overcome. If you think you are going to die you will even if it’s not your time.
Having faith and praying, growing closer to God are all very important steps. Nothing will make you stronger than being close to God.
This isn’t the only thing that can cause cancer, but one thing is having a very drastic thing happen in your life, like a death of a family member, divorce, loss of job. It all depends on how you handle these horrific events. The main reason you could get cancer during these times is because your immune system is fighting your emotions and the cancer slips in.
Also things like diet, not exercising or bad habits.
The book is telling us even if these things happen we have hope. Never lose sight of that, because once your hope is gone it’s to late. Also if a doctor tells you, you only have a few weeks or months don’t believe them. God is the one who is in control and you need to keep the faith and hope. Very interesting, small book. Recommended.

Review: A Reason For Hope by Michael S. Barry.

Even when news of terminal cancer hits close to home it 19s hard to digest and understand. The word of wisdom and spiritual truths sometimes gives strength where it is needed. This book did not give me all the answers I was looking for but at least I got some insight on the emotions that people go through. I don 19t feel alone now and I feel more comfortable around my love one. Sometimes I have to put on another face but the person who has the cancer puts on a better one. We all know this is the process of life but to live it is the hard part. The book was written by a minister so of course the adventures of religion and prayer was included. However I found this book was also about understanding the disease and how it affects your emotional core and how to utilize feelings and not shelter them because it won 19t help you or your love one.

What I couldn 19t understand is 26WHY!! That word haunts me everyday even when I 19m feeling.. HOPE is always there; just keep hanging onto that word gives me the strength that my love one will still be here tomorrow. I just want to say the book was helpful at the time I read it but the life long memories are the best 26..

A MUST READ FOR ANYONE ONE YOU KNOW AND LOVE THAT GETS CANCER! A great read for anyone that knows someone fighting the good fight against cancer. As a cancer survivor myself I wish I would have found this book a lot sooner! Christian based thoughts on exactly what you need to keep that tough fight up.

This little book is so comforting and calming. When things feel tough, Pastor Barry is there to encourage you and give you hope. This book has been my favorite through my husband's cancer journey. Pastor Barry has a couple of other excellent books as well.

Every cancer patient should read this. The book is definitely written from a christian ministers point of view, but the underlying message is one that should be taken to heart by everyone who is facing a battle with cancer.
