An illustrated study of the life and art of the noted Impressionist traces Renoir's career from his early struggles to his triumphant later years and discusses his stylistic, technical, and topical contributions to art
The definitive book on my favorite artist. This jumbo book (at least 11"x 17") contains at least 100 large color images, key personal letters and commentary by the foremost English-language scholar. The only downsides? Some pages are in black and white and the commentary is a bit dry.
Astonishing, I always felt that Renoir was the least talented of the impressionists and a careful look at these reproductions and then reading about his hardships it is miraculous that he painted at all in his twilight years. He had a way to portray all of his surroundings as intensely beautiful. I haven't read all of the text, I thumb through this book when I'm feeling as though life is a little drab and always come away with a better perspective and a much more cheerful attitude.
An informative biography, easily read (though not easily held - this book is HUGE and HEAVY!) even if you don't have a background in art or art history. There are lots of pictures, color as well as black & white. For the most part, the author lets Renoir and his contemporaries speak for and against his work, without providing her own readings.
