Le sec et l'humide est une étude linguistique, critique et psychanalytique, consacrée à un livre du fasciste belge Léon Degrelle (1912-1994) intitulé " La Campagne de Russie ", récit des batailles de la Légion Wallonie sur le front de l'Est auxquelles il participa de 1941 à 1945. Texte bref et illustré avec précision, commencé pendant la phase de documentation qui a précédé l'écriture des Bienveillantes, Le sec et l'humide nous entraîne dans l'atelier de Littell en nous dévoilant un peu de sa manière très personnelle de travailler et exploiter ses sources.

A bi-lingual (English / French) writer living in Barcelona. He is a dual citizen of the United States and France and is of Jewish background. His first novel written in French, Les Bienveillantes , won two major French awards.

His father is the writer Robert Littell, also resident in France and who authored numerous spy novels.

El autor de la monumental "Las Benevolas" gestó durante su fase de investigación esta rara avis ensayística, respondiendo a una cuestión tan compleja como es definir el caracter fascista, no ya desde una óptica política sino individual y corporal, casi fisiológica del individuo.
Para tamaña proeza, Littell aplicó un afilado bisturí -las teorías de Theweleit- para diseccionar el corpus de las experiencias e impresiones personales recogidas en "La campaña de Rusia" de Leon Degrelle, nada menos.
Por situarnos, Degrelle fue un icono fascista, fundador de la division valona de las SS, infant terrible belga que tras la guerra se afincó y prosperó en nuestro país hasta su muerte, así como supuesta inspiración para Tintín e "hijo adoptivo" de Hitler, algo así como el Forrest Gump del Tercer Reich - siempre según su versión de los hechos, claro.

Littell deja volar su pluma con tanto desparpajo como desvergüenza sin perder el anclaje académico de Theweleit y expone patrones del lenguaje usado por Degrelle en símbolos y metáforas presentes en el texto, que psicoanaliza con resultados sorprendentes: la fobia fascista a la disolución de su núcleo-mentalidad y cuerpo, bello y romántico pero débil y delicado, para evitar lo cual se rodea de una dura carcasa-armadura destinada a mantenerlo siempre tieso, rígido, atlético y enhiesto -enseguida me explico- cuya preservación depende en gran medida de mantenerlo seco, lejos de lo femenino.
Por el contrario, a los adversarios -rojos, independientemente de su nacionalidad o el escenario- siempre les son atribuídas cualidades más propias de batracios que de humanos: reptan, son blandos, resbaladizos, pantanosos... húmedos.

La ironía que Littell alcanza llega al paroxismo cuando explica la sexualidad fascista -próxima al homoerotismo aunque prohiba el acto homosexual- lamentando que "[...] Degrelle no se plantease nunca esa forma de placer: [...] para convertirse en ser humano deberían habérsela metido bien metida por el culo". Para concluir, mencionar un detalle nada anecdótico: el protagonista de "Las Benévolas" busca sin éxito a Degrelle, mas donde él erraba, Littell llega.

Very easy to read, very entertaining and a very enlightning book. The dry and the humid enters the fascist psychology through the eyes of Col. Leon Degrelle - the leader of the belgian fascist party "Rex" and commander of the SS Wallonian division -, autor of "Our Journey into Russia". Via an analysis of Degrelle's writing, his words and his expressions about his boys and the enemy, and the reading of Klaus Theweleit, author, in 1977, Männerphantasien (Male Fantasies), Littell manages to explain what makes a fascist be, and introduce us to a deep study of his thoughts and feelings.

This book was published as part of the intensive research for Littell's masterpiece "Les Bienveillantes" (Prix Goncourt 2006).

Je to beletria? Je to psychoanalýza? Je to literárny dialóg autora so sociológom Klausom Theweleitom? Alebo je to výcuc z Theweleitovho masívneho 1200 stranového diela Mužské Fantázie? Alebo je to literárna kritika (Ak sa dá Degrellova nazi propaganda považovať za literatúru)? Ťažko povedať, je to všetko vymenované, ale je to aj omnoho viac. Je to naložené a výborné DLC k Láskavým Bohyniam, a určite mi to ešte dlho ostane rezonovať v hlave. Zároveň to má veľmi príjemnú dĺžku, takže bude jednoduché sa k tomu ešte niekedy vrátiť.

Leon Degrelle byl vedoucí postava belgickýho fašizmu a dokázal se dostat hodně vysoko v náckovskejch žebříčkách hodností za druhý světový. Tendleten belgickej Tomio Okamura bojoval na východní frontě a po válce utekl do Španělska, kde si v klidu zmrdsky dožil anižby musel lézt kanálama.

Jeho vzpomínky "Tažení v Rusku" popisujou všechny šílenosti, který se na frontě děly a sloužily Littellovi jako hlavní model pro Maxe Aueho, hlavní postavu Laskavých Bohyní. Suchý a mokrý je komentovaná verze těch populistických hoven, který Degrelle zplodil a Littell svojí analýzou ukazuje, jakej to vlastně byl retard a kde lhal a proč. Littell se krom toho opírá o Theweleita a jeho poválečnou psychoanalýzu nácků. Tak a teď to zní, jako kdybych tomu rozumněl.

V knize se ovšem nedovíme, jestli Degrelle žral hovna a kouřil ptáky, nebo si to u Aueho Littell vymyslel. Bez přečtení Laskavých bohyní to asi nemá takovou váhu, ale jelikož já doma váhu mám, tak za mě hodně dobrý.

En zou, andersom, een zogeheten 'normale' man kunnen veranderen in een 'fascist'? [...] Theweleit zelf acht dit blijkbaar mogelijk. 'Zelfs normale moordenaars worde lachende moordenaars' heb ik hem horen zeggen. Want in zijn opvatting 'heeft iedere man in zich een deel van het lichaam van een soldatenman' - iedere man, of althans alle mannen die bereid zijn om tot handelen over te gaan. "Maar het 'fascisme' is een lichamelijke toestand, een gevaarlijke materie, die met macht en geweld probeert de toestand van de wereld aan te passen en te onderwerpen aan die van het eigen lichaam. Jonathan Littell, die niet na, maar tijdens het schrijven van 'De Welwillenden' aan zijn tekst over Léon Degrelle heeft gewerkt - dus terwijl hij de taal van SS-officier Max Aue construeerde-, toont daarmee aan dat hij, anders dan [Claude] Lanzmann beweert, de taal van zijn protagonist helemaal niet 'uitgevonden' heeft. Littell geeft niet alleen nauwkeurig 'de gebeurtenissen, de namen en de plaatsen' weer, hij heeft zich ook grondig verdiept in het beschikbare taalmateriaal van de 'beulen', waaronder de fragmenten die zijn opgenomen in 'Männerphantasien' en ook hij had vijf jaar nodig om zijn roman te schrijven. Dat is dan ook de minimaal noodzakelijke periode om de gruwel van het fascistische lichaam zo intensief te bestuderen en te verwerken dat iemand de resultaten in een coherente literaire vorm kan weergeven zonder permanent te kotsen of eronder te bezwijken.

Velen hebben 'Männerphantasien' gelezen en geprezen, vooral in universitaire kringen in Amerika. Slechts weinigen hebben echt met het boek gewerkt; blijkbaar is dat te pijnlijk. Des te groter was mijn belangstelling voor de studie van Jonathan Littell over de Belgische 'zoon van Hitler' Leon Degrelle. En nu is het wachten op de Duitse vertaling van 'De welwillenden'"

Szkoda, że książka jest tak krótka, ale nie mogę nie dać jej 5 gwiazdek, bo porusza aspekt faszyzmu, który według mnie jest niesamowicie ważny (może nawet kluczowy), a nie natknęłam się wcześniej na żadną pozycję, która by ten wątek opisywała. Psychoanalityczne podejście do postaci faszysty wydaje się podejściem mało wiarygodnym, ale po przeczytaniu tej książki gwarantuję, że jest jak najbardziej właściwe. W posłowiu przeraził mnie i zmroził z pozoru oczywisty, ale przez wielu nieuświadomiony sobie fakt: faszyzm żyje nie tylko w umyśle, jest również stanem ciała. Wyrugowanie ideologii i podejście logiczno-rozumowe nie rozwiązuje problemu. Faszyzm jest jak trauma, która może przechodzić z pokolenia na pokolenie i infekować sposób odnoszenia się do rzeczywistości. Postać Degrelle'a jest w tej książce jedynie jednym z wielu przykładów, jakie można w tym kontekście przytoczyć. Niemniej jednak warto zapoznać się bliżej z jego wątpliwą legendą, choćby po to, by razem z Littellem prześledzić sformułowane przez Klausa Theweleita tezy na przykładzie zapisków belgijskiego nazisty. Gwarantuję zdumienie, obrzydzenie i fascynację poziomem manipulacji i próbami uporządkowania rzeczywistości przez "bohatersko" walczącego o zachowanie trwałości własnego (bardzo kruchego i sztywnego) "ja" faszystę. Warto przeczytać.

Interesante exploración psicoanalítica sobre los modos de emergencia y reproducción del fascismo, particularmente en torno a la literatura. Tomado de forma aislada, es una obra difícil de entender y encasillar; si se lee, no obstante, mano a mano, o a continuación, de "Las Benévolas", del mismo autor, es un libro que toma una dimensión casi impensada. Por decirlo de algún modo, pareciera ser una auscultación psicoanalítica a la mentalidad fascista y nacional-socialista, la que a su vez debió de haber servido como ensayo y aclaración teórica para su trabajo en su novela más conocida.

Een zeer vlotte en - bij vlagen - geestig geschreven introductie op/toepassing van het werk van Klaus Theweleit. Aan de hand van het werk en leven van Léon Degrelle, onderzoekt Littell in hoeverre de theorieën van Theweleit toepasbaar zijn op een Waalse context.

Perfect voor iedereen die zich niet door vijfhonderd pagina’s Deleuziaanse antipsychiatrie wil werken in Mannenfantasie. (En als je de NL’se vertaling leest: pagina 50 is smullen, iykyk.)

Le sec et l’humide is a richly illustrated study of Léon Degrelle’s World War II memoirs La campagne de la Russie. Degrelle is an infamous Belgian fascist, leader of the Rexist Party during the ‘30s and commandant of the SS “Wallonie” divison, formed by Belgian volunteers.

In this book, Jonathan Littell – more known for his magnum opus Les Bienveillantes - does a close reading of Degrelle’s memoirs employing the theoretical framework exposed in Klaus Theleweit’s Male Phantasies, a study of the literature composed by the members of the Freikorps, a German fascist paramilitary group that existed for a few years following WWI.

Just as Theleweit has shown with his group of fascists, Littell shows how Degrelle’s fascist psyche tries to expurgate everything that is “wet” and “liquid” from him and his fascist comrades, and thus reinforcing his fascist-Ego (though not in a Freudian way), while at the same time attributing such feared characteristics to his Asian and Slavic enemies. Littell’s prose is slick and engaging, while the results of his study are most impressive.

I am currently finishing Kindly Ones and when I spotted this book on the market I simply had to buy it. The psychological study, this time real Nazi, was breath taking in its nakedness in the autopsy of Léon Joseph Marie Ignace Degrelle. Degrelle was Walloon Belgian politician, who founded Rexism and take his part in Wafen SS on the eastern front. He was one of the most controversial character of the Belgian history. The book is focused on his exploits in Russia using own Degrelle´s text describing his Russian exploits. Littell was inspired by work of Klaus Theweleit who wrote extensive work about Degrelle. The Dry and humid theme is used to enhance the movement of Degrelle ´ s mind. The two principles are in polarity and the fear of wetness and humidity was described as a huge motor in Degrelle ´s mind. Oh by the way humidity is connected to female element...one would question our Belgian even more...
However this book is one of my must read and re-readed ones.

Decepcionant. Es tracta d'un estudi psicoanalític des d'un punt de vista freudià del feixisme nazi i dels feixistes en si mateixos, prenent com a font un llibre d'un filonazi belga que va participar a la invasió de Rússia per part de l'exercit alemany a partir del 1942.
A banda d'aquesta relació entre Max Aue (protagonista de les Benignes, un llibre impressionant de Littell) i Leon Degrelle, no hi ha cap semblança entre aquell libre i aquest.
Ho recomanaria a psicòlegs i a criminòlegs, però en cap cas és una lectura a l'abast de qualsevol.

Anwendung der von Theweleit in "Männerphantasien" entwickelten Thesen auf das Buch des Wallonischen Faschisten Degrelle ("La campagne de Russie") - vor deren Hintergrund man auch "die Wohlgesinnten" lesen sollte. Angesichts des im Postskriptum abgedruckten Fotos des lachenden amerikanischen Soldaten, der vor der Leiche eines während der Folter in Abu Ghraib gestorbenen Gefangenen posiert, wird auch die Aktualität der Ueberlegungen zum soldatischen perversen Männer-Ich augenscheinlich.

Excelent view to psychology of fascist. J.Littel (author of epic The Kindly Ones - propably best book I ever read) work with one concrete person (Léonne Degrelle) and one concrete "work of art" (Campaign in Russia) of this person.
Compulsory reading for everyone, who wants apprehend thinking of fascists.
