Ann Herrick is the author of several books and short stories for kids and teens. Her books have won several awards, such as the ALA Recommended Book for Reluctant Readers award and an IRA/CBC Children’s Choice award. Her stories have appeared in magazines such as 'Teen, Listen, The Single Parent, Children's Digest and The Friend.
Ann Herrick grew up in Connecticut, where she graduated from The Morgan School and Quinnipiac University. She now lives in Oregon with her husband, who was her high-school sweetheart. Their wonderful daughter is grown, married and gainfully employed, and has given Ann her only grand-dog, Puff, a bloodhound-rottweiller-beagle mix. While she misses the East Coast, especially houses built before 1900, she enjoys the green valleys, fresh air and low humidity in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Ann loves cats, walking and working in her back yard. In addition to stories and books for children and young adults, Ann also writes copy for humorous and conventional greeting cards."

The vast majority of Ann's books are HFN (Happily For Now, with the possibility of Happily Ever After. The characters are in their teens, after all, so Ever After would be a *really* long time.) Two books have positive endings, but not the standard HFN or HEA, but with those possibilities if the reader reads very carefully between the lines at the end of the story.

What happens when your mother marries The Perfect Guy’s father? You become his stepsister, live in the same house, and even share a bathroom.

For a while now, Rebecca has been dreaming of Pres, a senior at her school, but now that her mom has married Pres's dad, he sees her as a kid sister. Even her best friend, Celeste, tries to discourage her from her obsession with Pres. But Rebecca is sure she can win Pres over; all she needs is time, and now that they live together, they have plenty of time.

Pres’s father is in charge of the school play, and he offers Rebecca the opportunity to write the school play's script. With lots of research into the town’s past, Rebecca discovers an ally and a great friend in Josh, Celeste’s brother. Josh helps her learn how to dance for her mom’s wedding. Josh helps her search the town’s past for her script, and he is also there for her when she needs someone to talk to about her new family dynamic.

All her careful plotting is unfolding and not in the way she planned. Will Rebecca see what’s right in front of her? Can she find the happy ending in the family she’s always wanted? Can she find it in the not-so-perfect family she now has?

The Perfect Guy was an endearing look into the life and teen struggles of Rebecca, her friends, and even her new family. I found this story delightful, charming, and enjoyable. I did feel this story would be a perfect fit for the tween audience, Rebecca’s youthfulness and predilection seem to match that age group's mindset the best. Even the length is very conducive for a young reader, making it a quick, easy, fast-paced read.

This copy of The Perfect Guy was given to me by Ann Herrick in exchange for an honest review.

*NOTE: We (The Readdicts) received a copy of The Perfect Guy from author Ann Herrick in exchange for an honest review. We thank Ann for the book!

The Perfect Guy was an extremely cute and jolly read that I completely relished. It is the kind of story that has a feel good effect that doesn't just come at the end but starts at the beginning, continues throughout and lasts until the very end.
An absolutely lovely story of two brother and sister duos who also happen to be best friends, The Perfect Guy is a perfectly lighthearted and casual read or better yet, it's a short and sweet read that will have you smiling.
In her head, Rebecca knows who the perfect guy is for her. This guy, Pres, also happens to be her new step brother. Rebecca looks at her mom's marriage to Pres' dad Bill as a way to get closer to Pres. Only Rebecca doesn't know that all along her heart has already been swept away by someone.
Rebecca was genuine. She was a really sweet girl who was confused about her feelings and watching her got back so many of my own teenage memories.
Pres was a great guy. He was smart and sweet. He and Rebecca shared a very nice relationship. I loved how they saw each other as good friends, took their parents marriage with good spirit, adjusted well to the newness of it all and enjoyed their new family life. Their relationships with their respective parent and step-parent were also very good.
Rebecca's best friend Celeste and her big brother Josh who happens to be Pres' best friend were two really adorable people. Celeste was a practical girl who tried to keep her best friend's feet firmly planted on the ground and helped her see how Rebecca was just living in a fantasy land of her own.
Josh was an absolutely awesome guy. He was kind, protective and really funny. I loved his relationship with his sister and Rebecca. He was just too cute.
I've always enjoyed books that revolve around plays and in The Perfect Guy as well, there is a school play going on which celebrates 350 years of Sandy Cove, the place in which the story takes place.
Author Ann Herrick has written an absolutely wonderful and enjoyable Young Adult novel. Her writing is smooth and simple.
It had been a long time since I read a good, clean, simple and sweet YA novel and I'm glad I read The Perfect Guy. Sweet characters and an even sweeter story along with a perfect, practical and happy ending make The Perfect Guy a sugary read that is wonderfully pleasant and leaves you feeling good.

It is probrably never a good idea to fall in love with a guy that is soon to be your step brother.Or have a mother who falls in love with a man whose son happens to be the guy you are crushing on.The Perfect Guy was a super cute read.I loved the main characters and the secondary characters.Celeste is so focused on one thing that she misses what has been right in front of her the whole time. Its real. That's what I love about it.I think many many teenage girls need to read this! This is definitely a book worth reading and I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did!

I want to start by saying that I'm not hugely fond of this cover and I think it's where the book lets itself down the most. Unfortunately it wouldn't have made me buy it, but it could be worse. The guy is rather cute though.

For the YA genre the characters are spot on and I could imagine myself being just like Rebecca when I was that age (I too had a step-brother). My only niggle was I thought Rebecca forgave a little too quickly. I won't say who she forgave and why she needed to but it felt a teensy bit out of character to be reconciled quite so quickly. it was a minor niggle though.

The storyline was a fairly typical YA romance so no disappointments there. It played it safe but it did it well so I was content to go along with the flow.

I really enjoyed the pacing and smoothness of the book. For me it was spot on the balance between action, description and emotions. Again, nothing totally special, but yet also special, because I never felt jarred out of anything. It just kept rolling along nicely. Definitely the strength of the book. I was absorbed and just kept reading.

I don't think I noticed a single mistake the entire book but the formatting for the indent at the start of each paragraph was a little kooky. I think spaces were used rather than the indent feature and it was a little odd sometimes, but my eyes got used to it eventually.

In conclusion this is a great YA romance that will be a breeze to read and not overly tax the brain. Very satisfying ending and well written and edited. I definitely enjoyed it and will be on the look out for more by the author.

Two reviews for the price of one: I read The Perfect Guy last summer, as did a sib of mine, and we both enjoyed it! It's the first Ann Herrick book we'd read. Loved the romance. Rebecca, the main female character, had to figure out how she felt about the different guys in the book. Really like that both guys are nice, good, and handsome. That works well because then she has two great guys to decide whom she likes best.
Favorite character award goes to: Josh - he's very cool and fun. Love reading about him.
Sometimes I almost told Rebecca out loud to be a better friend to Celeste, who consistently showed her true and faithful friendship. She had it pretty rough sometimes. Rebecca did also, and we felt for the sadness she had to go through. She tried to make things as good as possible. Unlike her adopted dad, who was pretty difficult to put up with at times, just not understanding and he didn't seem to be trying all that much in certain instances to make things better when he could have so easily. Rebecca had her mom, grandmother, Celeste, Pres, and Josh - all of them were there for her, so that's very cool.

I won't give any spoilers, I'll just say that we're very pleased with how it worked out on who ended up with who. :) The Perfect Guy is a great summer read - love it! :)

Very cute, fast paced, short, clean read. This story sucked me in right away. I appreciated how clean the story line was. I loved the 4 main friends/sibling pairs. The secondary characters were in this just as much as the leading lady, Rebecca. They added to the story nicely and they made you want to know them a little more.

Rebecca is a play writer, who's a sophomore in high school. Her mom is marrying her dream guys father. Pretty soon her and Pres will become one big happy family. Problem is, Rebecca may be the only one living up there on cloud nine while Pres is living on planet oblivious. However, the Sullivan siblings may be the only two with a clue as to the real deal while Rebecca lives life through rose colored glasses. While Rebecca comes to terms with her ideas of the perfect guy, someone else will be waiting in the wings for her to clue in.

Loved about this book:
1. Josh- great guy and friend and his devotion.
2. No real angst or major drama.
3. Issues resolved nicely and quickly.
4. HEA
5. I felt Rebecca learned some valuable lessons along the way as well as a bit of maturing/growing up.

Prescott Nelson is the perfect guy. He's president of the school council, an athlete, a talented singer, and absolutely gorgeous. Tomorrow, after the wedding, everything was going to be even more perfect. Rebecca would be living in the same house as Prescott Nelson. Soon they'll be madly in love. What could be more perfect?

Problem. The marriage ceremony is for Rebecca's mother and Prescott's father. Prescott is now going to be Rebecca's stepsister. I just don't see how this is going to work out.

I loved the stubborn somewhat naïve Rebecca, her slightly more realistic friend and confidante Celeste, and the dynamics between the two characters throughout the story. I also liked the underlying message that sometimes perfect isn't what you first imagined.

This is a super sweet YA romance story. I love books that are written in first person. This story is told from the perspective of Rebecca who is in high school. I was pulled into the story right from the beginning and loved watching the story unfold. I have read a few of Ann's books and all of the characters she writes are very easy to relate to. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this one as much as the others but I loved it! Sometimes we stare at one person or thing so long we don't notice what has been there all along and this was that kind of story and I am happy it turned out the way it did!

It was okay but if it was up to me, I wouldn't of been so forgiving to Celeste. I would of kicked her ass. She betrayed her friend, no matter what the novel says. Disgusting!

This is a great YA read. I was fascinated by the story and how skillfully Ann wove in so many important issues without making them seem preachy. She has a good grasp of teens today.

The Perfect Guy is a new edition of a young adult romance novel previously published in 1989 and again in 2005. Like Twisted Window by Lois Duncan and Fog by Caroline Cooney, this book has apparently been modernized from its original form in the hopes of reaching a new, 21st century teen audience. The main character of the story is Rebecca, whose mother has just remarried to the father of Rebecca's crush, Pres. Rebecca is naively convinced that this new family dynamic is sure to cause Pres to finally in love with her. She keeps trying to make up reasons to spend more time with her stepbrother, but despite her best efforts, he always seems to respond in a brotherly way. What Rebecca doesn't realize, though, is that another guy in her life is ready to give her everything Pres won't.

I have to confess that I could tell right away that this was a not a brand-new contemporary novel. Even before I learned that it was originally published in the 1980s, I noticed that all the modern-day technology in the story felt out of place. I also thought the characters' names - Pres, Celeste, and Rebecca - sounded nothing like names that teens commonly have in 2013. This isn't necessarily a flaw, but for me, these things were slight distractions. I also questioned whether it was necessary for Rebecca to be in love with her stepbrother, as I don't know how common a problem that truly is for real teens.

That said, the story itself is easy to read, with straightforward writing, lots of dialogue, and short, fast-paced chapters. Herrick captures that sense of obsession some girls develop when they have crushes, and very realistically portrays how blind they can become to the reality of the boys' lack of interest in them. Middle school girls - and even some high schoolers - who are reluctant to read will enjoy the interpersonal drama that emerges as the story progresses, and they will be just as pleased with the happy ending, even if they will see it coming a long way off. The story also offers a lot of sympathy and comfort for girls adapting to new stepfamilies, which is always a relevant topic for this age group.

"…Can a teenage girl open her eyes to what is reality and what is fantasy before it is too late?

Ms. Herrick did a wonderful job in portraying the feelings that just about every teenage girl goes through. Rebecca is a fun, lovable character that has enough optimism to fuel the world."

The book was ok, a light read but utterly forgettable. You know, the kind of book you read once and forget about it quickly enough.

Josh was the only character I really liked. He was sweet and charming, plus I liked how he worked to make Rebecca pay him attention. It was great to have him around, especially because Press wasn't very interesting and Rebecca was a little too naive and self centered.

However the character I really disliked in this story was Celeste. Even though it was clear from the beginning Press wasn't interested in Rebecca, she deserved some loyalty and sincerity from her best friend. I wouldn't want a back stabber like her as best friend and of course trusting her again would be impossible (can you really trust someone who has been lying to you for weeks? For me is not about a guy, but about friendship).
And with friends like her who needs enemies?

3.5. I really enjoyed Josh's character but at times Rebecca got on my nerves with all her daydreaming and the bestfriend didn't feel like a bestfriend but a frienemy. I'd say if you like a happy read then this will work.
