Sorry if you keep seeing random updates from me, but for the past week or two I've been combing through all the old manga I have lying (laying?) around. Bit of a nostalgic trip! Of course, nothing hit quite like Fullmetal Alchemist when it was at its peak (actually, it never dipped in quality). And the author definitely pulled no punches right out the gate! This volume is the infamous one. You know, the one with that one scene. I know I'm being infuriatingly vague, but I don't want to spoil it! I will say that it made me just as emotional reading it today as it did way back when. Anyway, it feels good to be back!

Also Ed is a short king.

In this my third go at this series, I'm faring much better than in previous reads, when I stopped at Volume 1 the first time, and dropped it at Volume 3 on the second, largely as a result of not being in the most optimal mood for manga, that coincided with a long visual media slump that engulfed all graphic storytelling formats from written/drawn to filmed.

I said before that I like the premise of Fullmetal Alchemist, and I repeat it again now, particularly the rule of equivalent exchange and balance that applies to the science of alchemy (in this world, it's a science and not magic). This very rigid law forces both the protagonist Elric brothers and the rest of characters to take measures that are harsh and loaded with ethical and moral traps. In just this one volume, we've already had two alchemists break the rules to experiment with humans in a forbidden manner, and the resulting dilemmas are interesting to explore. The raised questions could apply to modern science, too. Like, to what point is it willing to break the rules to experiment with humans not for the sake of advancing science or curing something horrible but to account for state grants and investors' profits? The answer can be uncomfortable.

Another aspect I liked was that Edward is bluntly faced with someone who knows his dark secret and yet does the same anyway, although not for the same motives, and he must struggle with seeing it develop in real time. I would've wished it hit him harder than it did, honestly, sometimes I think Arakawa doesn't delve in-depth enough into these important questions when she raises them. But, on the other hand, it may be a product of this being a very early volume and the sequential nature of the storytelling demands this be done drop by drop.

The third aspect I enjoyed was that there was an interesting introduction to religious-driven terrorism. Or at least that's what it looks like. Someone sees alchemy as unnatural and altering divine laws and resorts to terrorist methods to combat it? Sounds familiar, and yet it doesn't quite appear to be what it looks like. I wasn't expecting this, either, but given the power alchemy bestows on practitioners and the uses the state is finding for it, it makes sense that the dark side would be present too.

In sum, 4.5 stars it is. I like how the series is progressing, without circumventing the difficult topics amidst all the lightness and silliness brought about by the Elrics being so young and having a loving cat/dog dynamic. I do hope Arakawa keeps this balance, it's very easy to blow up seriousness and humour combinations if one's not careful.

The brothers' search for a remedy to their 'fullmetal' situations sees them visit a bio-alchemy authority, but things don't turn out anything like they expected; meanwhile someone is viciously killing state alchemists!
I found the first volume of this series underwhelming, but this volume has the series heading in the right direction for me now; with more definitive character and reality building, more restrained humour and the full introduction of the supporting cast, as well as a delightfully dangerous antagonist. 7 out of 12 Three Stars this time. :)

Buddy read adventures with Bhavik AKA Roy Mustang

Haha. I just realised which volume this is.

Oh no.

Chapter 5: The Alchemist's Suffering" (錬金術師の苦悩 Renkinjutsushi no Kunō
Mega spoilers for those who haven’t seen FMA or FMAB/ read the manga
First: in all honesty, the original FMA made this a hell of a lot sadder.

I absolutely love the relationship between Ed and Mustang. Their dynamic makes me happy.

In this volume, Roy owes Ed for apprehending some baddies. And so, Roy introduces them to Nina and Tucker . Tucker AKA single dad with glasses syndrome is a state alchemist (known as the life-binding alchemist) who is trying his best to create chimera that can speak.

And so the tears begin.

Alrighty. So Alexander and Nina are the sweetest beings on this earth. And to top it off, the time they spend with Ed and Al is awesome.

There are a lot of questions in this one: is what Tucker did just as bad as what Ed did? Well, I don’t think so.

And so enter Scar.

Chapter 6: The Right Hand of Destruction" (破壊の右手 Hakai no Migite
Okay, more feels.

We finally get to see how Ed and Al were with their mother. We also experience the PTSD from which Ed suffers.

But Hughes! My favourite FMA character of all time (other than my other favourites of all time). Also Major Armstrong, who is always great.

We find out a little about Scar and his motives behind killing national alchemists. Scar reminds me so much of The Crow
Image result for the crow comic

There is so much introspection in this chapter, as well as kick-ass fight scenes.

Chapter 7: After the Rain" (雨の後 Ame no Ato
”We’re all beat up. There’s no way we can suck this much. But we’re alive. We’re alive.

This is an INTENSE chapter where all our favourite national alchemists gang up against Scar, and we get awesome humour as always.

This chapter really made me appreciate the gorgeous artstyle of this manga. And then BAM! Roy Boy is back in town.

And Riza shows off her skills!

But Armstrong shows off his muscle and Maes shows, his smarts.

Chapter 8: The Road of Hope" (希望の道 Kibō no Michi
This is when admit to you guys that I have a dog named Winry. She’s adorable, but also crazy and fierce. So she’s aptly named.

This is a good chance at enjoying some humour after hectic events. We really get to see the sweet and loving side of Armstrong.

Wait. Never mind. It gets emotional and intense again.

We finally visit Ed and Al’s hometown of Liesenburgh.

And Pride, Gluttony and Lust are always at play. The plot is really starting to come together, and all the loose pieces are tying up.

“Riza: Without his Alchemy he's just...
Jean: A little brat who swears a lot
Maes: An arrogant pipsqueak
Roy: Useless. Just useless
Alphonse: Sorry big brother, I don't know how to add to that...
Edward: *starts to cry* YOU'RE ALL PICKING ON ME!!!”
HAHAHAHA I LOVE IT WHEN PEOPLE RIDICULE EDWARD CAUSE...WHY NOT?!

I loved this! Wasn't as thrilling as the first book of course but I like where the story's going! So the Fullmetal Alchemist A.K.A Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse Elric try to restore their bodies back and they need a philosopher's stone to do that. But acquiring it is not so easy with an alchemist killer on the loose who's trying to wipe out the alchemist population. Curse him!

I absolutely loved the sense of humor and it's very entertaining and didn't bore me even one bit!

4.5 stars.

“To put it bluntly, all State Alchemist are nothing but the military’s human weapons. We do what they want, we obey orders, and we don’t complain if our hands get dirty in the process. My point being that when it comes to messing with human lives [redacted] actions aren’t so different from our own […] But the path that he’s chosen will no doubt lead to hardships greater than he faced today. He has to move forward… even if it means forcing himself to understand.”

If I were to describe this volume in one word it would probably be despair and depression because of all the things happening here.

As much as some of them are, probably, isolated stories that got solved fast, well, we are already seeing some of the far-reaching ramifications and influence it's gonna have. The fact that trauma is actually explored is really nice.

Even though there is rather a lot of pain in this volume we can also see some hope at the end of the tunnel and a lot of plot-furthering events that seem rather exciting and momentous.
How I'm loving the little details that the manga has! I'm having so much fun with all of them.

“Alchemy is the reconstruction of matter in new forms based on the knowledge of natural laws. This world flows by obeying these laws. Death, too, is a part of that flow. Accept the flow of the world.”

One of the things I love the most about Fullmetal Alchemist is the way it deep dives into the comparisons/relation between alchemy and religion and what it all means. The complexities and meaning of power and the duology and danger of incessant knowledge wrongly pursued and wanted.

It deals with such complex and multifaceted themes that I must absolutely take my time to go through it all and fully comprehend it because it deserves to be carefully handled.

The way it all reflects and appears in Ed and Al's lives and how deeply they can connect and relate to all of it it's super interesting to explore as well. Especially in the way everything is connected, to a degree, and relates and makes the story become much more fleshed and human.

“You’re right. People may call us dogs or devils, but Al and I will get our original bodies back. But we’re not devils or gods. WE’RE HUMANS.”

The expansion of both the plot and the cast was great and I already love most of the new characters... though I do not understand a few and would like to get a much clearer read on them.

I'm still getting used to the manga format - which rather confuses me during fights - but I do have to say that is a different experience that goes well with the story. The art and the way Arakawa draws it makes it dynamic and conveys so much emotion and intensity, which is always satisfying to see.

This world seems rather huge and the little glimpses of it we've gotten so far are very enticing. With the added bonus of the story moving forward, well, I would say a little too fast. Honestly, with things as they are, what are we gonna be discovering from now on?

“What destroys, can also create! And what creates, can also destroy! Destruction and creation are two sides of the same coin! We must tear down in order to build! That is the great law of the cosmos!”

Really, this is just too good.

I swear, I'm way too obsessed with this manga. I haven't been able to think about anything else for days, even though I really tried to start another book that I really wanted to read, and I don't think it's going away any time soon.

So, as the responsible person I am, I decided to just feed that obsession until it's sated and I can go on with my life. Yeah, that's right, I'm surrendering to it.

The good thing is there are 27 volumes and this is just the second one... I have about a month of content or more, and that is a nice thought.

Well, ouch. I picked this up looking for an fun, action-y read in the style of volume 1. I did not expect it to perforate my heart quite so quickly, or to haunt me for so long afterwards. The story still has its cute and slapstick moments, but their ephemerality is painfully evident. There's now little doubt that the stakes are high, and that the unthinkable is actually very thinkable for certain people. The early part of the story is so chilling that it kinda overshadowed everything that came after. However, there is more of a continuous storyline compared to the episodic style of volume 1, which I thought was an improvement.

The events in this Vol picked up where the previous volume ended. The plot is finally coming together.

The chapters in this Vol are one of the saddest I've ever read. Just when I thought the characters would get relief, things got worse for them.

There were some new characters here that I liked, and I really like Mustang, Armstrong, and the other alchemist. I can’t wait to see more of
them.

The Elric brothers are as cool as ever; there were more revelations about them; I can’t wait to read more.

There were many revelations in this, and I now know who the main villains are, though I don’t know their endgame yet. I hope our protagonists discover that soon.

A perfect arc and one of the most scarring things I have read (or seen in the anime) is in chapter 5 of this volume. All the major themes of the series are present in this book
Destruction and creation are two sides of the same coin. We must tear down in order to build.

Ambition, morality in serving an institution, on the pressure to perform, the collateral damage that is acceptable and the similarities between monsters and ourselves. A brilliant volume, especially with the introduction of Hughes and Armstrong, such nice characters, and daring how the author puts us at the side of genocidal regime, instead of being the goodies.

Quotes:
We are just pathetic human beings.

Humans are really simple creatures. Bloodshed begets bloodshed, hatred begets hatred.

No pude evitarlo: me emocioné. Eso demuestra que conocer de prepo cómo se va a desarrollar la historia no quita el hype que te da.

ASPECTOS NEGATIVOS

At the end of every volume of FMA is a very small panel depicting all the characters who died with halos over their heads and wings on their backs, ascending to Heaven.

It's worth noting that Shou Tucker is shown wallowing in Hell. Even Father gets to go to Heaven, but Tucker goes to Hell. That makes me bizarrely happy, because I hate Tucker more than I hate any other character in the series, bar none - not Pride, though he creeps me out; not Envy, even after all he's done; not even Kimblee, who's almost as much of a human monster as Tucker is.

The events that he's involved in break my heart every single time. To be honest, if they don't make you feel something, I worry about your emotional range. It's horrible, and at the same time that I'm sick with rage and sorrow, I can't help but take a step back and admire it, because really - it's a brilliant piece of writing to evoke such emotion.

Oblique spoiler for Volume 4:

My favorite and yet least-favorite moment

The second half of the volume, which deals mostly with Scar, really pales next to the first, even though it has its own fair share of rich moments. The way Ed and Al react to things feels very real, true to their experiences and their age - they may act like adults, as Hawkeye says, but they're really just children, and here we see that in action as that uncommon maturity fails. At the same time, despite everything, they have an incredible internal strength - they turn pain into determination and just refuse to back down; I can't help but admire them.

I actually don't remember exactly what happens in Volume 3, so I'm looking forward to re-reading it. Not, however, to Volume 4. That one is going to hurt.

While the first volume establishes the essentials in Fullmetal Alchemist, volume two expands this industrial-mechanical world as it introduces evem new characters and storylines.

Volume 2 also does not veer away from elements which are pretty much hard to stomach, alchemy and political issues that display the dark side of this world. Kudos to Arakawa for being bold im writing these darmer elements.

But FA is not Attack of Titan. It may be heavy on certain scenes, but the humor and the deliberate goofy art are abundant! This volume is very much balanced in action, comedy and drama.

This was a pretty good volume!

As Al and Edward are searching for the Philosophers stone they meet the guy named Shou Tucker and his daughter but as things transpire and what he does to create chimeras is shocking and at that moment Ed realizes the inhumanity that some men have and its a lesson to him. In some other place a Alchemist hunter named Scar is hunting them and he has to deal with him with the aid of other state alchemists and we come to know about Ishbalans. They go to their hometown Resembool for repairs but meet another man named Dr Marcoh and the revelations there that happen.

Great volume as it continues the story and the boys attempt to get their body back and I love how the author is able to weave in future villains and story elements that will become big in the future. The villains in the background sure are something but its also good to see that Ed wont compromise his principles and convictions for gaining the stone. Its a great book about sacrifice and discovery and what we often do to get them but some persist. The artwork is simple and suits the book and I like it.

Even as the world of Fullmetal Alchemist is shown to be increasingly dark down to its roots -- religious conflicts, civil war, genocide, martial law, human experimentation, religious extremist serial killers -- Arakawa brings more humor to the character interaction. It's a battle manga with a quest for the Philosopher's Stone at its center, but I'm hoping the characters will become more human as the story progresses. It's on the right track at the moment.

After the slow-paced and mellow first volume, volume two kicks into high gear almost right outside the gate. The main storyline triggers properly and breaks an arm. In the span of a few pages the pace goes from zero to hundred... which is a bit of a problem, really. I think it could have used another whole volume at least, maybe two, of short single-chapter stories, to establish the characters and the setting and give us some time to breathe and get our bearings before bringing out the big guns.

Upon further reflection, the problem I think is the introduction of Dr. Marcoh, which is what gets the main plot going more than anything else here... and which was introduced to us essentially at random, in the middle of the characters trying to do something else. I believe it would have been better to move it a little later into the story - another two or three volumes in, with a couple filler chapters to pad up the middle - and make it less reliant on chance and more deliberate.

Still, the pacing gets very good in the climactic battle against Scar, and we're also introduced to some more of the most memorable cast members and antagonists, especially Armstrong. So it could have gone a whole lot worse.

So I can see a lot of religious details, such as introducing three of the seven deadly sins (lust, gluttony, envy) as demons? at this point, I don't know what they really are, but they're there. Scar's whole story and religious view are interesting. Using Alchemy to destroy Alchemists in the name of (religion?).
I'm enjoying the tasks Edward and Al go through, and despite not being able to keep up with all the alchemists introduced in this volume, I love their variety. We also need more female characters!

2024 review:
- the mix of european names random names (what kind of name is Havoc?) is strange after reading so many mangas with japanese names
- the dreaded volumes. I can't believe that the "dog incident" happened in this volume
- the brothers' relationship is gold
- I'm still intrigued to see how the characters of the seven deadly sins will play in this world of alchemy and magic
