The story happens in the south of ancient China. Meng He with her incredibly beautiful appearance gains the top in Female Provincial Examination, attracting a group of pursuers. However, she disguises to be a boy and steps on the way of finding her natural father by ship. On the way, the ship encounters snow storm suddenly. People on board are stranded on the frozen river helplessly and suffer the fatal test of survival. In such a hopeless situation, the examinee Jin He digs ice to rescue others at night but cannot attend the exam because of cold injury. For sake of gratitude, Meng He takes the examination under Jins name and achieves the first which arouses a series of bewildering accidents and sufferings. And she also finds her love, leaving a memorable romance legend.

Yu Qiuyu (余秋雨), born in 1946 in Yuyao, Zhejiang, is one of the well-known contemporary Chinese cultural and literary figures. With an enormous readership in China and overseas, his cultural explorations link China with the rest of the world and his bold and direct criticisms of certain cultural phenomena make him loved and detested in equal measure. In 1985, Yu became the youngest full professor in China at the age of 39, and later became the president of the Shanghai Theater Academy.
