Adair MacTaren had come in friendship, but one look at the comely lass standing before him addled the young man's mind beyond repair. Margaret sold her first historical romance and the premiere book of her Warrior series, A WARRIOR'S HEART, to Harlequin Historicals® in 1991. Lady Marianne has just come home from years spent in the convent. But she learns that her brother has already had her life mapped out, she is to marry a older Scot, who has plenty of wealth and connections to the King. Marianne doesn't trust any of the Scots, she considers herself Norman and only wishes to marry a Norman. But when a group of Scots come in, her attention goes straight to the son of the Mactaren Laird...Adair. Adair has his future mapped out, and he always thought he would marry a Scottish lass. But there is a Norman woman, one that he finds compelling. When he learns that she is to be forced to marry a man she doesn't want, and through a series of events, they find themselves married. Will they be able to find happiness despite their differing cultures and expectations?

It has been quite some time since I have read a book by this author. I used to read her all the time, but I lost touch with her the past couple of years. And lately I have been wanting to read more medieval themed romances, and this one seemed perfect. It is set in the 1200's and we see how this author has done her homework on the culture and differing feelings from the Scots and the English. There were many aspects of this story that I really enjoyed. One of my favorites, was how this author combined historical data with the love story and made them go hand in hand together in a way that makes you thirst for more stories just like this one.

What we have here is a love story that starts off with mistrusts and not the best circumstances, but we also see how these two try to do everything that they can to make their marriage work, and learn the values of patience and communication. I loved how Marianne learns to endear herself to the clan, and learn their ways and tries to cultivate it into her life so that she can be accepted as one of them. Adair learns the value of being honest and patient, and what a good hero he was. He could be rash and prideful and definitely have a temper, but at the heart, such a good human being. I loved how these two worked together and they were definitely fully compatible once they got over certain misunderstandings...but it was quite fun seeing them work through things.

A sensational story, that takes you back to the medieval time period, with the passion and captivating writing...witty and romantic!!

Love me a Scottish medieval romance, but I fully admit, this one didn't come up to my expectations. I'd read a few other Margaret Moore romances, and enjoyed them, but I guess a few things threw me as I began.

For starters, I had already read the second book in the BIA series, Lord of Dunkeathe, and must say, it was a damn good thing I did, because I wouldn't have been even slightly interested in Nicolas's story, if I'd begun with BoL. Because here, he is just a full-on, grade-A a**hat, without anything much to recommend him as a character I'd want to read an entire novel about. It was a bit jarring to see him in BoL, after LoD. Happy mistake, to start with book #2!

Secondly, I'm all for "feisty" heroines, with guts and determination, but Marianne annoyed the crap out of me! It's not "strong" or "brave" for her to be so completely stupid/stubborn that she acts like a spoiled brat, claiming that she has the situation with her impending nuptials under control, and the she would have found a way out of things. The character seems to vacillate between being willfully naive about how the world around her operates one moment, and then worldly-wise and sensuous the next, because, well, convents. Huh?!? I found her rather inconsistent, and pretty arrogant, for the situation she was in.

Aidan was more appealing, though I felt a bit like I was looking at

It finally grabbed me at the end, because I wanted to see how they were going to get out of the whole mess they were in. But it took a while getting there, and I could see the entire plot staring me in the face the whole time, so it was a little hard waiting for the end.

Ok for brief entertainment purposes, but not one I'll re-read in future. I'd prefer to do that with Moore's Kight's Prize series.

I finished this Scottish adventure/ medieval romance
on 03/10/25. I liked the first half better. This had 5 sex
scenes. 3 stars. Read 1x.

Sir Nichols, a Norman, was awarded land in Scotland.
He brought home his beautiful sis Marienne, who had
lived in a convent for 12 yrs, w/o professing vows. He
had intended her for a wealthy, elderly Scotsman,
Hamish. She was a little spoiled & preferred a Norman
man. Nick needed funds to fortify his castle.

Adair, heir to his sire, a chieftain, met Marianne twice.
The 3rd time he tried to save her from a loveless
marriage, 2 days before the ceremony.

The MCs insulted each other and lusted too. Both
needed to mature. I have read more interesting
books by this author.

The writing was good, the plot was mostly good. I found a few things abhorrent so I must give it a bad review.
(1) The male protagonist kept behaving like a moron and putting others in danger. He kept doing what he liked and not being punished. His stupidity and not being punished led to rebellion.
(2) The men are bad and women are good trope was there.
(3) Women being shamed for sleeping around *even in a society where it is not considered wrong* was there. Women being shamed or rejected for being raped was there. Maybe it could be historically accurate, I don't know, but I find it unacceptable. Neither my family nor others I know would consider that an acceptable social norm.
(4) There was a very sweet, almost childlike serving woman. She cried easily. Virtually every character was mean to her and made her cry! Then, at the end of the book, she is raped while the super sexy queen like main character is spared. I found this horrendous! I found the idea of any of the women being raped to be horrendous!
(5) I found the main character letting so many people be in danger rather than abdicating to be crazy. Not good for his wife either.

Very few characters I liked. The main female one was one of the few.

Me gustó!

Marianne and Adair were so perfect for each other. They had an initial misunderstanding but once they sorted it out, I think their relationship was stronger for it.
I enjoyed the clashes between the Scots and Normans/English, and the differences in culture. The Scots are clearly resentful of the Normans, and the Normans don’t like anything to do with the Scots’ way of life.
I liked how Marianne didn’t let her prejudices against Scots get in the way of endearing herself to the clan. She sees that for good or for bad, she is stuck in Scotland and there is nothing to be gained by acting superior and disdainful.
The baddies of the story are varied and generally well explained.
The ending felt a little cut short. It was leading up to a huge showdown between Adair and Lachlann, maybe a battle. Instead, the rebels surrender. The tension was released too quickly.

Scotland 1235

So we have Adair the braw Scot who notices Marianne at her brother Nicholas' castle while trying to find things out about the Normans. He decides that she doesn't want to marry the old rich Scot her brother has her set to marry. He catches her trying to run away in the night and he ends up kissing her. After some thought he sneaks back into Nicholas' castle to rescue her from marrying the old man. She doesn't want to go but once it's found out Adair is in her room, her brother tries to get in the room calling her a whore the whole time. Adair leaves out the window and then she has no other choice and decides to try fate leaving instead of staying with her mean brother.

I am curious as to the other brother of Marianne and Nicholas. They mention at the beginning that his name is Henry and he's a knight. Is this the same Sir Henry from Book 4? I haven't read that book in awhile so I can't remember if Sir Henry mentions that he has a brother and sister. And if they are Nicholas and Marianne.

This was a re-read for me and I'm not sure it held up to my memories of awesomeness. Marianne came off as spoiled and bratty - did not appreciate her stubbornness in finding a "respectable" NORMAN husband. We get it, your Norman and you want to marry a Norman, but jeez she was not very open minded.

Adair was the hero - who was a Scot and a warrior but we never get to experience that side of him. The author tells us he is but we don't actually get to read anything that shows us this. Even the ending was robbed of action/tension of any kind because the big battle/showdown is cut short before it even really begins.

It was an okay read but definitely not at all at the same level as my favorite Highland reads by Julie Garwood.

Silly and cringy historical romance to get over reading slumps >>>>>>

This trashy romance novel wasn't acutally all that trashy, and it was actually entertaining. Decent plot, adequate writing, fairly interesting characters. A solid three stars, especially given the genre.

I'm taking this author off my shelves. She likes her protagonists to be antagonistic to each other and then fall in love. Not realistic at all.
