Lord Kirkheathe's first wife was dead, and though his liege lord deemed him guiltless, rumor yet tarred his reputation.
Now, Elizabeth Perronet found herself his newly wedded bride with a question of her own: If Raymond D'Estienne were truly no savage, how had he unleashed in her things so…untamed and wild?
Or so believed Raymond D'Estienne, courtesy of his late wife. What, then, was he to make of the remarkable Elizabeth Perronet, fresh from the convent and determined to change his life—in ways he'd never dreamed!

After thirteen years in a convent, where she was starved and beaten, Elizabeth Perronet will do just about anything to escape. When her cousin Genevieve breaks her betrothal to run off with another man, Elizabeth's uncle comes to the convent and offers Elizabeth an ultimatum. Elizabeth must marry the man Genevieve was promised to, or spend the rest of her life in the convent. Elizabeth quickly agrees the marriage, even though she has never met Raymond D'Estienne, Genevieve's former betrothed. Elizabeth doesn't expect to find love in marriage, but longs for children and hopes to find happiness as a mother. Raymond is not looking for love either. His first wife betrayed him, and he is only remarrying to provide an heir. I really enjoyed this love story about two people who don't expect much from marriage finding out just how wonderful love can be. Margaret Moore is becoming one of my favorite historical romance writers. I'll definitely be reading all her books.
The Overlord's Bride is a book that I actually saw randomly scrolling through my Libby's library and I was shocked to see such an old-school romance. And I instantly grabbed it up and the moment that I started reading it, I was hooked. I had forgotten how much I had enjoyed this author's writing in the past, so if you are looking for a fast quick read, this is definitely one to grab up especially if you want to explore the older historical's that are out there (and trust me there are plenty of great ones) This is part of a series, although it seems to be loosely connected. Its a big series 15 books I think of all medieval era themes and settings and I can't wait to explore the series here more.
The Overlord's Bride features some strong characters in:
Raymond D'Estienne-English Aristocrasy, poor, injured voice,
Elizabeth Perronet-grew up in a convent, beautiful, cunning, and intelligent
The Overlord's Bride sets off with our heroine, Elizabeth, who has been taken from the convent by her uncle who wants her to fulfill an arranged marriage contract that her cousin was originally supposed to fulfill. But when her cousin fell in love with another man, it is now her duty to fulfill the contract. Elizabeth is more than willing to do so, her life in the convent was full of abuse all of her life, and is grateful to escape its horrors. When she first meets her lord and future husband, she sees someone that strikes fear in many but not in her. She knows there is goodness in him and is more than willing to prove to be a good wife and mother to his children. She knows he has had horror in his life as well and feels a connection to him. But there is a plot to a neighboring lord who wants what her husband has and it will take some creative cunning for Elizabeth and Raymond to work together, defeat the enemy and prove to the Earl that they are worthy and of the plot against them from a corrupt lord.
Elizabeth had never heard anything quite like the soft hoarseness of Lord Kirkheathe’s deep voice. It seemed at once intimate and frightening, as if he were part beast and, at the same time, pure human male. A man might sound like that in the throes of fierce passion, whispering in her ear.
The Overlord's Bride is a story that SURPRISED me so much. I was really stunned by the heroine, she was so wonderful here. You know how in those horror movies, and the character (most times women haha) go down the alley alone and you think to yourself "no no you stupid girl" well I had one of these moments in this book when I thought that the heroine was being too trusting and then she shocks me by being cunning and crafty and setting her own trap for the villain instead of the other way around and man I wanted to clap and cheer this character on because YEP!! I loved it. The romance was sweet and not too full of angst, which I quite enjoyed. It was such a fast read, read it under two hours so it really was quick, faster than I expected. You never know when you delve into older historicals and if the writing will be more harder to adapt to. But its Margaret Moore, and she is so easy to read while also holding up to historical authenticity in the story. The hero was quite a delight, he is somewhat alpha, but not too much. I loved him though, he has scars and injuries, but I like that he doesn't let that set him back. He is determined to protect his people and loved his hard work ethic and devotion to them. I really felt for some of the side characters who get caught up in the trap that the villain sets and I respect the author in showcasing the lives that the poor and how they were used by those more powerful than they. But it was done it quite a admirable way that didn't take from the story but added to it. The setting was so well written, and I loved being able to immerse myself into this medieval era without it being too specific.
“It’s love, Elizabeth. Love has come over me. My love for you has freed me and yes, loosened my tongue.” He gave her a small, mischievous smile. “Or perhaps I only wanted them to know how pleased I am with my wife.”
Overall I found The Overlord's Bride to be an essential story that was exactly what I needed in a historical (too many modern ones of late), this author's writing voice was such a refresher and a reminder of the gems of older historical's that are deeply missed. Highly recommend you picking this one up here.
Sim!
The heroine was the star of this story. Funny and clever. The story moved along at a nice pace. The hero was very likable also but it was really great having a heroine where the hero really took note of her wit. The usual tropes were bypassed thank goodness.

I think this might have needed a little more for me to make it a 5. I only wish I knew what part of the medieval time period it is. I was reading it but there is very little mention of royal politics or years so I guess I'll have to be in ignorance.
This book was really sweet but it bored me. It was like, three hundred pages of her being brilliant, him growling and adoring her... and yeah, that's about it.
It really didn't get its claws in me. But honestly there's nothing wrong with the book itself at all. It's really cute. 🤗🤷🏼♀️
well this is the fastest I've read in this series. i enjoyed the hero and heroine talks and spending time together. i liked the villain he kept me on my toes wondering what was going to happen next. one of the best so far.
Wow! This little treasure bowled me over. I loved the story from start to finish. The is the first Margaret Moore novel that I've ever read, and based on my experience with this book, it certainly wont be my last! First off, the book is very well written and the characters are all amazingly drawn. Elizabeth is a wonderful heroine. She's a bundle of energy; lively, bubbly, chatty, sweet, loving, and generous to a fault. Having endured a thirteen years in a convent overseen by a cruel, selfish Abbess, Elizabeth is more than happy to comply with her uncle's command that she marry a man she's never met. Elizabeth would rather wed a stranger than have to go back to the convent. Her only worry while en route to the hero's keep is whether or not he will agree to accept her plain self as a replacement bride for her beautiful cousin, Genevieve. Genevieve was Raymond's promised bride, but in an effort to escape the arranged marriage she ended up ruining herself with a Welshman who she married. Genevieve's story precedes this one and can be read in The Welshman's Bride. I have not read that book as yet, but that in no way impeded my enjoyment in this book.
When Elizabeth first meets Raymond she is so adorable in her desperation to get him to accept her as a wife that she makes promises that the little darling can't possibly keep; promises to be humble, biddable, and quiet--this last is particularly difficult for Elizabeth! LOL Raymond is the quintessential tortured hero. He was married before to a woman he loved, and who seemed to love him in return, that is until the night she tried to kill him and Raymond ended up killing her instead.
As a result of the attack by his wife, Raymond is left with a ruined voice; he speaks very low in a harsh rasp. Needless to say, the incident left Raymond with scars, both emotional and physical, and he no longer trust any woman. His sole purpose for remarrying is practicality--he needs the alliance marriage to Elizabeth will bring, and he needs an heir. Raymond has no intention of ever feeling anything towards Elizabeth except "a certain tolerance"; she is a means to an end and nothing more. However, almost immediately upon her arrival Elizabeth begins to wreak havoc in Raymond's life. LOL Very shortly after they marry the two fall deeply in love.
The romance between Elizabeth and Raymond is very sweet and very touching. To add some intrigue to the plot is the enmity between Raymond and his former brother-in-law, who is determined to wreak revenge against Raymond for the death of his sister. The story spans a period of about a year and does skip ahead a period of months a couple of times. As for sexual content, there are a couple of love scenes, but they are minimally described. Furthermore, no crude language is used in the story. This is an amazing book. I loved it and highly recommend it. Happy reading!

It is too disjointed. The conversation is flat and she (author) killed the dog! our H comes across his small furry body covered in cuts. when she killed off Rual, the maid turned spy, that was...okay, villain's character just notched up a bit, then he (villain) had to make it look like she'd been raped and then murdered... and Barden, the faithful old garrison guard gets and arrow in his chest while our h is talking to him.
i think i disliked the dog being killed the most!
it was an okay novel to spend time. but wasn't that good of a read. atleast it wasn't over the top angsty. so one extra star for that. 3 stars.

Come to think of it, considering this is part of a long series (this being 13th!!), this was actually quite easy to get through even though I haven't read any of the others. There weren't too many characters being thrown in and revived. We had glimpses of them, but this can be read easily as a standalone, which is quite and accomplishment of the author's.
Also, the storyline is simple, straightforward, sweet (nice bit of alliteration). Nothing very ingenious, but rather ingenuous (i've been waiting to use those two words together :D)-- girl locked away in horrid convent married off to scarred, scared of love stranger becomes chatelaine of his castle keep and his heart. There's the obligatory villain-- neighbor, brother-in-law (who had been sleeping with his sister- the H's wife, who is now dead because she tried to kill him when he hinted at their 'unnatural' relationship)
So, all in all, a good story. still giving it 3 stars :)
For my #3 challenge (Title With Wedding Word), I read The Overlord's Bride by Margaret Moore. Lady Elizabeth Perronet is given an ultimatum by her miserly uncle - marry Lord Kirkheathe, Raymond Destienne, in place of her cousin Genevieve, or return to the convent where she was mistreated for thirteen years. Rather than return to the convent, Elizabeth decides to take a chance on marriage to the dour Lord Kirkheathe.
Raymond Destienne had a reason to distrust all women - years ago, he had killed his first wife, Allicia, in self defense. Her death left him with a ruined voice and a broken heart. His overlord had deemed him faultless, although castle gossips still blamed him for her death.
Now the time has come for him to marry again. Surprisingly, Elizabeth's sunny disposition and loving heart just might help Raymond to overcome the scars of the past. I give this sweet medieval romance a B+!
A pleasant read. Lady Elizabeth is taken from the covenant that she has live in for the past 13 years so that she may be married to Lord Kirkheathe. Kirkheathe, has already had one wife whom he accidentally killed whilst warding off her attempted murder upon his person. Scared and untrusting Raymond (Lord Kirkheathe)enters this marriage with more than just a grain of salt at hand. However Elizabeth's' straight forward, bold and honest nature proves to be just what he needs to heal his wounded heart. A wonderful tale of how two people grow to love each other and how they overcome the obstacles that have been set in their path along the way. I give it 4 stars.
This book caught me from page one. I love reading historic books and this was a gift from a friend. I enjoyed the entire store. The main female character is a strong woman. I felt like i could relate to her because I am like her. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romance and history
