Excellent detail of the history of abstract expressionism and the key artists who were a part of it. The book also details various mindsets of these artists in their reasoning behind their methodology and subject matter. Excellent read and highly recommended!

Sandler's comprehensive break-down of some of the major players in American Abstract Expressionism definitely illustrates the personal access he had to the culture that shaped much of the art of the 20th century, with biographical timelines of the artists' careers, as well as the history of the movement as a whole.

A seminal book in the history of Abstract Expressionism. The book that made me go back to school for my MFA.
Gorky, Baziotes, Pollock, de Kooning, Hofmann, Still, Rothko, Motherwell, Reinhardt...

Quite a few colored plates, but not enough. Very readable text by Irving Sandler.
