3 stars (at most) -- I am glad that this book has a surprisingly redeeming ending because I did not enjoy most of the book. John 'Pete' Peters has just moved; it's a new house, a new neighborhood, & a new school. He is anxious about the first day of school, so at breakfast that morning, when his dad sees an ad in the paper for free puppies, Pete, his mom, & his dad all agree that he can bring one home. When he gets to the address after school, however, no puppies are left, so the man gives him a dog, Mishmash. And Mish is no ordinary dog. How Pete manages to find a new home for his overly friendly, overly helpful dog is the best part of the story. The rest of the story is a bit annoying to be truthful.

What a story. I do like the main character in this book, Pete. He’s a cute why boy, and he ends up getting a dog Mishmash. Mishmash is a really friendly but kind of unruley dog, but I liked him. I’m not ure that I’d let a dog sit at my kitchen table, but at the end of the book Pete ends u doing the right thing, and making a friend... :-)

Slight spoiler, no dogs die in this book. I can't handle old yeller type books so just want to assure people of that. It has a bittersweet ending but makes you wish everyone had a teacher like Miss Patch.

Mishmash is a very special dog. He's too special for most homes... but, after a few tries, he lands in the lap of someone who can really appreciate him. That's how families are made.

Fun classic to read-aloud with my 5-year-old. He can't wait until we read the rest the series.
