Rate this book
Ecclesiastical History is a book written by Sozomen, a Greek historian who lived in the 5th century. The book is a comprehensive account of the Christian church from the time of Christ to the early 5th century. It covers the major events, figures, and controversies of the church during this time, including the rise of Christianity, the persecution of Christians under the Roman Empire, the Council of Nicaea, and the spread of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. Sozomen draws on a wide range of sources to provide a detailed and nuanced account of the church's history, including the writings of early church fathers, official documents and records, and contemporary accounts of events. The book is an important source for scholars of early Christianity and provides valuable insights into the development of the Christian church and its impact on Western civilization. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Fascinating early account of the post-Constantine era of ecclesiastical history. More personal and readable than the ecclesiastical history of Socrates Scholasticus. Perhaps that is due to what seems like a better quality of translation. However the final book of the history seems to be a fragment since it ends in an unusual place. Perhaps the remainder of the history will be discovered someday.
