Margaret Way was born and educated in the river city of Brisbane, Australia. Before her marriage she was a well-known pianist, teacher, vocal coach and accompanist, but her hectic musical career came to a halt when her son was born and the demands of motherhood dictated a change of pace.

On a fortuitous impulse she decided to try her hand at romance writing and was thrilled when Mills & Boon accepted her first effort, Time of the Jacaranda, which they published less than a year later in 1970; a feat that brought tears to her father's eyes. Some seventy odd books have followed resulting in a loyal readership whose letters provide a source of support and encouragement. A driving force in all her writing has been the promotion of her much loved country, Australia. She delights in bringing it alive for her readers; its people, way of life, environment, flora and fauna. Her efforts so far have not excited official recognition, but she expects one day she will be awarded the "Order of Australia."

Her interests remain with the arts. She still plays the piano seriously, but her "top Cs" have gone. She is still addicted to collecting antiques and paintings and browsing through galleries. She now lives within sight and sound of beautiful Moreton Bay and its islands, inspiration for some of her books. Her house is full of books, spectacular plants, Chinese screens and pots. She is devoted to her garden and spends much time "directing the design and digging and providing cold drinks and chocolates."

This is a middle book in a series, so I felt like I had parachuted into unknown territory at times. The central romance is a second chance between a supermodel heroine and an outback station owner hero. They were high school sweethearts, had an intense sexual relationship, and it all came to an end when the heroine left at 19 to get away from her toxic family. Hero wanted to marry, but the heroine knew she wasn't ready.

Now, ten years later, the heroine is back for the funeral of her evil grandmother. Evil mom is still around, but beta dad is committing adultery and has asked for a divorce. (This was not handled well at all. Just because your wife is evil, it still doesn't justify adultery. Get a divorce first Beta Dad, who never stood up for your daughter).

Hero is at the funeral, eating his heart out and vowing to never be involved with the heroine again. The hero's mother invites the heroine to his home as her guest. Heroine agrees because she is done being a supermodel and she wants the hero back.

Hero sulks and agonizes and says hurtful things to the heroine, but heroine just stays calm and predicts they will be together again.

This was such a strange dynamic, to be honest. The hero played the part of Penny Jordan heroine who will never love another. The heroine played the part of the Penny Jordan hero who had to leave to self-actualize. I really didn't like either one of them. The hero whined too much. The heroine was smugly complacent. They both had sexual partners in the ten years apart. *sigh*

Besides the side story of the beta dad and evil mom, the heroine's brother's story was brought up again. (Secret baby was presumed dead due to the evil grandma's machinations, but was found after 15 years. He's finally marrying his baby mama.) There was also an unresolved thread about a buried treasure. There was an attempted rape of the heroine by one of the ranch hands, but after the hero saved her the heroine declared she had it all under control. *double sigh*

Outback checklist:
Party with all the prominent families in attendance
Expedition to trap wild horses for taming
Rescue of stranded motorists by plane
Hero's skill with piloting, horses, managing a station
Ye old history of the white settlers
Flora and Fauna descriptions.

These characters just didn’t come to life for me. this may because this story is very reminiscent of a book Way published in 2000, The Bridesmaid’s Wedding in which the h completely overlooked by her tyrannical father left home to find herself and become famous despite the fact that she and the H were deeply involved and committed. The h was young and overwhelmed. Sound familiar? Of course the abandoned H, devastated and desolate swears never to let himself be so hurt again. Yes,quite familiar.

In the ten years or so since TBW was published OB which takes place in Koomera has become a tad melodramatic and repetitive but Mitch and Christine whose Grandmother, the personification of evil can beat Stewart Kinross through the gates of hell.

Christine is on her way back - to a town full of bittersweet memories, but home to the only man she has ever truly loved, Mitch Claydon.

Outback born and bred, Mitch is filled with anger whenever he thinks about Christine. He'd loved her - had even offered marriage - but she'd chosen to pursue a life far away from Koomera Crossing. Now she's returned, and despite his strong resolve, Mitch finds he can't keep away. Christine is as beautiful and desirable as ever....
