A LIFE OF ADVENTURE SUITED HER WELL . . . UNTIL SHE WAS FACED WITH THE MOST PERILOUS GAME OF ALL: LOVE! The Earl of Northbridge was nobody's fool, but here he was lost in a sea of outrage, embarrassment--and honest perplexity. How could a woman masquerade as a man . . . and fool him so cleverly? Worse, how had she managed to coerce him into joining her scheme? For her part, Isabel was proud of her mastery of disguise. Now she was putting her skills to the ultimate test: She must get her young friend past a snare of murderous characters who mean to keep him from claiming his legacy. Only too soon did Isabel discover her greatest danger was not her enemies, but the earl himself. With his fathomless blue eyes, he seemed to see all her secrets--and there was no way she could mask that she'd fallen hopelessly in love!
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the main characters and the story was intriguing. Isabel must protect the young heir, Jamie, as he attempts to get to Thornwynd in time to inherit the title after his father is murdered by his own brother. The Earl of Northbridge has been named Jamie's guardian, but there are two claimants to the title and the Earl does not know which is the true heir.
When the Earl goes in search of the second Jamie, he encounters two males: Jamie and his protector, 'Jack,' trying to evade the criminals trying to stop Jamie from reaching Thornwynd in time to inherit. As he spends more time with the couple he discovers 'Jack's' secret. And their whole relationship is turned upside-down.
Add to that, Isabel has a another secret, and this secret can lead to the hangman's noose.
Very enjoyable read. Didn't expect it from the blurb. I love action packed HR and don't remember ever thinking there was too much action in a HR, but this was actually the case in this book. Therefore 4 stars and not 5.
Started off really well but by the middle I was feeling like it repeated the same lines over and over. The heroine then got annoyingly bossy and the hero annoyingly wimpy. Read her "The Mad Miss Mathley" instead!
