Scoring Chance

Rate this book
After a disastrous first half, it was time to get serious and win the game. Hockey superstar Dean Winchester is willing to do anything to win his girlfriend back and put aside his insecurities about her relationship with her curator/boss. However, a mistake during their break-up has the potential of ruining everything he and Sydney had built. Up and coming artist Sydney Walker admitted she was a bit naïve in her dealings with Dean but she is fully committed to working on their relationship. With her art curator promising her the world and fame, she can only go up. But when a blast from Dean’s past threatens to come back and destroy them, Sydney feels it’s time to play fire with water. Can Sydney and Dean survive a potential scandal? Or would they have exposed themselves for absolutely nothing? Scoring Chance is the fifth book in the Breakaway series. It is a standalone New Adult romance that deals with second chances, trust issues, and true love.

Sydney and Dean: So Happy Together

I love this series because it’s what NA romance is all about: Insta-love gone wrong, vindictive exes, a sweet, fine hero, sensual, steamy romance, and high stakes drama all rolled into one.

Scoring Chance is Book 5 in the Breakaway series, and it literally reads like a serial. I strongly suggest you start with Book 1, Breakaway, and work your way up. Technically, you don’t have to, but you would want to know how Sydney and Dean met, and how Sydney has blossomed from a Macy’s counter girl to the IT chick of the art world. Her growth is phenomenal, and it doesn’t help to have the love and support of a good man behind you (even when he does fuck up.)

Each installment is an evolution of Sydney and Dean as both individuals and as a couple, and the sexual tension in this story is bananas! Dean loves this girl so much that you can feel the emotion radiating off the page. In spite of all the mishaps and misunderstandings, they really love and route for one another, and I just can’t get enough of this series. I love that it speaks on social issues without being preachy, and my boo Scott Reed even makes an appearance. The villains, alone, make reading worthwhile because you just wanna put paws on them, especially that heffa Rebecca…Ugh…

didn’t even finish.

Made it to the skating scene and stopped.

Laying all the blame at Deans feet is actually crazy. So what if he slept with Rebecca for a week or a night… Sydney slept with the man her entire camp including her fiancé warned her about. She wanted to sleep with him and found an excuse that wouldn’t make her look too bad but can’t handle Dean sleeping with Rebecca?!?

The art based on the descriptions is mid. Also weird bc based on the authors description, which she loves to mention, Sydney is almost passing… yet she’s profiting off the plight of dark skinned women? It’s all so tone deaf and if she wasn’t in such a nonblack bubble someone would have advised. Notice how no one outside of those who want to sleep with her truly compliment her art… so she really isn’t talented enough for what’s being portrayed.

Till death do us part or till she gets another childish crush on someone and can paint Dean as the villain so she can cheat again?

Love beats all

Vera has told a beautiful love story. This wasn't about sex this was about having a real connection and relationship. I even fell in love with Ian the manager. I really recommended this whole series!

Scoring Chance (Breakaway #5) by Vera Roberts Hockey star Dean Winchester’s and artist Sydney Walker’s story continues in Vera Roberts’ fifth book of the Breakaway series, SCORING CHANCE.  After their recent breakup, the two reconciled, both making mistakes while not seeing one another.   Now a possible scandal once again threatens their relationship.

Both Dean and Sydney did some growing up in this story.  They are both still young, Dean 22 and Sydney 24.  They have a lot of responsibility for people their age.  I appreciated when Vera Roberts had Sydney and Dean flashback to their childhood memories.  It helps the reader understand the characters more.

I was sort of surprised how the story started out.  By the end of the book, the action at the start of the story seemed brilliant.

Jameson and Sarah get married in Vegas toward the beginning of this story.  Considering they are Dean’s and Sydney’s best friends respectively that makes for some interesting viewpoints throughout the novel.

Ian still rubs me wrong.  I like that he looks out for Sydney, but I don’t trust him.

Rebecca is a piece of work.  She adds controversy to the story and keeps it attention-grabbing.

I liked Quinn.  He was a fascinating client.  I could totally visualize Sydney’s mural.

I liked how the story was resolved.  It had a wonderful ending.  SCORING CHANCE is a great addition to the Breakaway series.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

No Sleep(song) = Dean and Sydney

Love that Dean and Sydney got it together. That they were able to talk and work on their obstacles. I still don't trust Ian and he knew that he would not be able to capture Syd's heart. Also, Rebecca is 5 short of a dozen and somebody really needs to check this little girl---hell she is not acting like a woman---she is just trifling. Love how the combatted Rebecca's with art of their own. Loved how Scott was just a little jealous when he asked Mari about watching the taping. Vera will continue to read your works. A loyal fan.

Liked It

I liked this series but I would have loved it had the main characters were a little older. And not really sure how I felt about the ending. But I do have a question. Is this the last book with these characters???

OK, I conceed!

I had planned to skip this book however, I just couldn't let this story ends on such a sore note.
So, I read book #5, and, I have you say; there was effort made to further inform what all happened between the couple. This still does not exist any infidelity but if causes me less Acida!
