”...our heart is restless until it rests in you [God].”
- St. Augustine, Confessions

This is a book about Lectio Divina, here renamed as the Discovery Prayer, and it's a pretty easy way to pray that rewards you with more peace and joy, a battle worth the effort. There are stories from those who have used it, and it also talks through some of the obstacles that can be there during prayer. The author is a speaker on Catholic spirituality and an executive director on EWTN TV channel.

Although this is a Catholic form of prayer, I feel that it could easily be used even by other types of Christians since it's about reading a part of the Gospels, then reflecting and praying with inspiration from it. The author helps you in preparing for it, making a commitment manifesto, and showing the benefits of using it, not just to yourself but for God(!) who wants to get closer to you. :)

The interviews were short, but had a variety of people in various states of life. The book itself is short with feeling of lightness yet with depth. I think this would be great for complete beginners, and for those seeking some support and form instead of going completely on their own. I know I will put it in use; this is a very inspiring book.

I was interested in this book because of the publisher, but once I read the forward by Matthew Kelly I was even more excited to be reading this incredible book on prayer. The bible has numerous passages about prayer. And there are literally thousands of books written about prayer, so you might be asking yourself, why another. And the answer is that Dan Burke has spent years teaching Catholics and other Christians this method of prayer. In the introduction Dan states: "The bottom line? If you want something to go right in life, pray! God didn't make us for the purpose of abandoning us to meaningless toil and suffering. The reality is that he wants to work with us in life so that we can know a kind of abundance that cannot be known outside of a relationship with him." And to be honest we all if we are honest would admit our prayer life could be a little better.

The Chapters in this book are:

Foreword
Introduction: Why Pray?
One: Your Desire for God, God's Desire for You
Two: Discovery Prayer
Three: Essential Elements for Progress in Prayer
Four: Making a Solemn Commitment to God
Five: Step-by-Step into the Presence of God
Six: Winning the Battle of Prayer
Seven: Experiencing God in Prayer
A Final Word of Encouragement: Be Scrappy

I have read through this book twice now, and know that I will do so again. I could prattle on about how great it is, and I do believe it is a great book. But I want to give you a series of quotes from the book that highlight some of the teaching Dan Burke shares with us through this volume.

"Discovery Prayer is a modern name for an ancient but ever new practice called Lectio Divina (a Latin phrase that means "Divine Reading"); this practical method will build a strong foundation for an ongoing prayer life."

"Sacred Time: As with any serious attempt to progress in the spiritual life, prayer requires time and patience. There has never been anyone who experienced significant progress in prayer without a daily commitment to meet with God."

"Sacred Space: Jesus instructed his followers to pray in secret in their "inner room" (see Matthew 6:6). It is ideal to create a space dedicated to prayer and nothing else. You might think this is not feasible, but it only requires a few feet of space."

"The goal is not to mechanically execute the method, but to honor and seek God."

"Similarly, when we consecrate something to God, we are giving something to him that we would not ever dare take back."

"To sum up Discovery Prayer: Reading seeks, reflection finds, responding engages, resting tastes, and the person who experiences an authentic encounter with God resolves."

"The Catechism reveals that prayer is a battle. It is a battle against the world, the flesh, and the devil-all the things that seek to distract us from our pursuit of God."

"If you are ready to get scrappy in your prayer life, there is no better time than now. Be scrappy, my friends, and you will know a joy and peace that you never thought possible."

Some pretty powerful stuff for a few quick quotes. But the whole book is about this method of prayer, and how to start it and how to grow the practice.

The Method:
"Reading: Performing an attentive, slow, leisurely, and repetitious reading of a short passage of the Bible
Reflecting: Making an effort to prayerfully engage with the meaning of the passage and to consider how it may apply to your life circumstances
Responding: Conversing with God about the passage
Resting: Allowing yourself to rest and remain absorbed in the words of God; allowing or inviting the Holy Spirit to draw you more deeply into his presence through what you've read
Resolving: Allowing the encounter with God to permeate your day, causing you to draw near to him through his self-revelation and unique call to you to participate with him in the redemption of the world"

This book is a powerful tool in on spiritual growth workbench. It will teach you this method of prayer, and motivate you to practice it and pursue a deeper relationship with the father, the Holy Spirit and the Son. It can be an excellent resource for a new Christian to begin this walk, or for the lifelong Christian to again go deeper with God.

There are a few really great things about this book. First the style of Dan's writing is easy to access and engaging. Second the number of examples at the end of the book, short interviews with different people of all walks of life who have used this practice to grow their faith. And finally that it is immediately applicable. You can read the book and even start practising as you are reading.

Overall this was an incredible read and I highly recommend it! So read this book and get scrappy in your prayer life.

Dan Burke is an excellent resource on ways to grow in the spiritual life, and this book will break down Lectio Divina to be your first steps towards mental prayer and ascension towards spiritual life. What stood out to me is an aspect of Lectio Divina that I usually left back due to poor structure: reflect, respond, and resolve. This book does a great job of providing design and expectations. It's a great guide if you want to explore a new and effective method of prayer.

In Into the Deep, Burke strives to make the difficult and challenging concept of prayer a simple and approachable practice.

And, I’m glad to say, he succeeds.

What Burke does so well is plant the seeds. It’s each of our responsibility, though, to water those seeds with our efforts. God will provide the sunshine and the miracle of growth.

Burke offers each of us a simple approach to prayer.

If you struggle with prayer…well, that means you’re just like the rest of us. Burke is right in the trenches with us, and he holds out his hand, offering tips, insight, advice, and, best of all, encouragement.

The book is divided into seven chapters, with an introduction and a closing. It’s not designed to be the end-all be-all of prayer, but rather your guidebook and starting point.

For example, in chapter 3, “Essential Elements for Progress in Prayer,” Burke outlines three keys to success, all of them sacred: sacred time, sacred space, and sacred attention. He gives a straightforward explanation and instructions for each.

Even my 12-year-old can put this into play. (Not that she will. But I think my college-age niece might…)

I also really appreciated chapter 5, which I think may be the part of the book that’s going to get dog-eared and highlighted the most for most people. In it, Burke goes through each of the steps of what he’s dubbed Discovery Prayer. After he explains he step, he also includes key questions, which help guide you through that step into the next step.

The marketer in me can’t help but see this process as the “Five R’s of Discovery Prayer”: Reading, Reflecting, Responding, Resting, and Resolving.

Again and again, Burke refers to prayer as a battle, and I used to not understand this. Four kids and 13 years of marriage later, I have more than a glimpse of what he means.

Which makes me appreciate his humor, too.

Because it’s not just about distractions and a scholarly approach to winning this battle (and, we hope, also the war) on our journey to holiness.

Nope. Burke has dubbed the distractions monkeys, and given that my youngest toddler is a climber and the fearless adventurer of my current days, I can’t help but laugh.

The moneys are in my head, though, too.

“The monkeys represent everything that distracts you during prayer,” Burke writes, “your memory, your will, your emotions, your desires, your frustrations, your sins, your shortcomings, your interests, your habits, your good thoughts, your bad thoughts…”

I would add, too, the physical things that distract me: the temperature (too hot! too cold!), the children (who need something! right! now!), the calls…

This book is truly a treasure, and though I would complain about its brevity, I actually appreciate that, like any good teacher, Burke has left us to engage with the material and learn for ourselves. He gives us the instruction and sits back, taking himself out of the spotlight and allowing the material to do its work.

Into the Deep is a a must-have book for Catholics of all stripes. Though it’s targeted at beginners, you might want to check it out before you consider yourself advanced and think yourself beyond it.

Although this book could be read in one sitting, resist doing so. Read it slowly to allow its wisdom to soak into your heart. Prayer is essential to a relationship with the Lord. The author has done all who endeavor to pray well a great service with his website and books. This newest book offers practical advice to grow in the spiritual life. It includes testimonies from several who are striving to pray more deeply and more frequently. I highly encourage all readers to read Dan's books and check his site daily.

If you are wanting to spend productive time in prayer with the Scriptures, this is a good place to start. The chapters are short, but full of good advice. Author Dan Burke calls his method "Discovery Prayer," which is also known as Lectio Divina. While implementing this book, you will discover God through His word.

A short, concise and direct unpacking of what it means to pray as a Catholic. I appreciate how the author unashamedly directs readers towards the foundational beliefs of the Catholic faith— scripture, the sacraments and community. I’d recommend this to year 8/9 students and above who have grown up in a Catholic family and need a refresher on what it means to seek peace through prayer. In 100 pages, this provides practical resources as well that are ready to be out to use at youth group or in the classroom.

Daniel Burke’s book “Into the Deep: Finding Peace Through Prayer” emphasizes how each person can have a stronger relationship with God through prayer. He emphasizes that God desires to have a relationship with each person and that he cares about each person individually and he interacts with us as individuals. So, prayer will be different for each person based on where each person is at his or her life.

Burke emphasizes that the desire to pray to God is evidence that God is working in the person’s life. The Lord desires a relationship with each person, and an individual’s desire to pray comes from God’s initiative. The author points out that the first step to prayer is realizing that God has loved us first. Burke quotes 1 John 4:19, which says “he first loved us.” So, God loved us before we ever began to love him. This is the starting point for prayer.

The author emphasizes that the second step to prayer is to simply begin to pray. A person is encouraged to set time aside daily to pray to God and get closer to him. So, while God initiates our relationship with him, it is also necessary to make a commitment to him in prayer.

Discovery prayer is emphasized in chapter two. The author says the first step of discovery prayer is to read the Bible, followed by reflecting on the passage, which is the second step. He encourages a person to read and reflect upon scripture for 10 minutes a day. Of course, someone could spend more time daily, but 10 minutes is what the author mentions.

The third part of discovery prayer is responding, which involves talking with God, and the fourth part of discovery prayer is resting, which involves resting and remaining immersed in God’s word. The fifth part of discovery prayer is being resolved to allow God to permeate a person’s daily activities.

Burke presents prayer to God as something that can deeply change and transform one’s life.

The author encourages people to take time to pray in a certain location with a certain posture or attentiveness to prayer. Burke divides the three parts into sacred time, sacred space and sacred attention. He encourages people to pray at the beginning of the day in an established location with an attentiveness that fosters concentration.

Burke encourages people to read and meditate on the four Gospels. He briefly discusses each one and the specific reason each one was written. He suggests going slow and taking one’s time as one reads and reflects upon the Gospels.

The author also discusses obstacles to prayer and how to overcome them. Additionally, he interviews some people who are trying to develop a prayer life, and discusses with them how they are doing in their journey.

Burke also encourages people to overcome obstacles to prayer. He cites some personal characteristics that help a person overcome obstacles to prayer. These characteristics are the following: Being positive; resourceful; trusting; having the long view; trying to be resilient; and trying to be consistent and humble.

I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to get closer to God. The book’s primary message is that God desires to have a relationship with each person, and that relationship can bring peace and strength. Such a relationship can be strengthened through prayer.

This super easy read motivated me to the point of setting up a daily prayer life. Why do I need a daily prayer life? Because I am not capable of living a life without God. I pray because I am not yet a saint and want to be. "I don't pray because I am holy; I pray because I am not. God didn't make us for the purpose of abandoning us to meaningless toil and suffering. The reality is that he wants to work with us in life so that we can know a kind of abundance that cannot be known outside of a relationship with him." As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength... He invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life."

This is one of those books that you can probably read in an hour, and it is so packed full of information, helpful tips, suggestions, & examples that you don't want to put it down until you've finished it. And then you'll want to read it again. Seriously, it's as close to perfect as a book can be regarding mental prayer. It covers everything from how to establish your environment, how to position your body, what accessories you need, how to use a written contract to commit to our Lord the hours of the day and the type of prayer you will be praying, and so many more useful pieces of information that will set you on your way toward successful mental prayer. Honestly, if you follow Dan Burke's information and guidance in this book, I don't see how you can fail to improve in your meditation and/or contemplation. I cannott recommend this book highly enough.

Few books may actually make an impact on a person's life, but this book is one of the few. I have never read a more concise and attractive work on prayer. This short book is far from a theoretical treatise on prayer, but rather it compels its readers to dive into a relationship with God in a very doable and practical way. While the book is written for your average lay man, it may also be of use to the erudite if they are humble of heart and wish to return to the basics. God speaks to us in his Son Jesus and this little jewel of a work provides a window into the world of God with an easy to follow Scriptural approach to prayer. The work also provides compelling testimonies on the impact of prayer in the lives of those who have responded to God's invitation to walk with Him. I invite you to go out into the deep!

Short, practical manual on lectio divina (here called Discovery Prayer). It is enhanced by personal testimonies in interview form describing the learning process, challenges, and fruits of daily prayer with scripture, including the most surprising and life changing moments encountered so far. Above all, this book is a trustworthy introduction to seriously taking up a prayerful orientation even in the middle of a busy life. Dan Burke and Melissa Ellsson host Divine Intimacy weekly radio show and podcast, which delves even more "into the deep." Burke also leads the Avila Institute.

I read this book as part of a course I took on spiritual direction. This is a simple, straight-forward look at the importance of prayer in our lives. It also clearly lays out why being prayerful can be a battle. There is so much in this world to distract us away from making time for prayer, but Dan Burke gives us clear and gentle ways to grow ever more deeper into a daily habit for a rich prayer life. This is a perfect book for those just starting out on their pilgrimage, and especially for those who are beginning spiritual direction.

Awesome book on mental prayer!

The book was easy to read and comprehend the basic elements of mental prayer. I like how the author also explained what mental prayer is not. The prayer method brings you into a closer relation with the Blessed Trinity and does not cause you to empty yourself or your mind like eastern methods of meditation or 'Mindfulness' practices. The title is so appropriate because the book teaches you to go deeper into your prayer life and relationship with God.

A motivational read in regard to prayer life. I think this is a good book to help build up your prayer life. It has inspired me to want to try out this form of prayer. The little interview section at the end was precious, and I liked reading about the experiences of others. I’m glad I read this before Lent has started because I feel like it will help me with this season.

Reading this book makes me want to wake up early to pray. In general, it makes me want to put a time into my schedule dedicated to prayer.

A helpful, easy-to-follow guide on incorporating prayer into one's daily life, focusing, in particular, upon lectio divina, referred to by this author by the easier-to-understand term, "discovery prayer." This guide is helping me to become more focused in making my quiet time with God more of a disciplined practice.

I read this book while attending a 5-week prayer group in our parish. Into the deep uses the term Discovery Prayer as an alternative to Lectio Divina. He talks about going into deep meditative prayer and how to do so. I particularly liked his section on Winning the Battle of Prayer, but in many ways this book was just another way of explaining Lectio Divina.
