Per fer una bona planificació de l'espai públic hauríem de ser creatius i transgressors, apunta Richard Sennett en aquest llibre. Si volem viure en entorns flexibles, sostenibles i estimulants, tots els professionals implicats en el disseny de les ciutats haurien d'incorporar coneixements d'altres disciplines, com ara la biologia evolutiva, l'antropologia, la filosofia o la literatura. A partir de la descripció d'un sistema urbà obert, en evolució inestable, Sennett ens emplaça a concebre l'espai públic en el sentit de «context», amb tota la seva complexitat dinàmica, com un procés sempre en marxa, capaç de respondre a la incertesa i al canvi continu a què està exposada la societat. És un llibre que se situa en la intersecció de la sociologia, l'urbanisme i l'arquitectura.

About the author

Richard Sennett has explored how individuals and groups make social and cultural sense of material facts -- about the cities in which they live and about the labour they do. He focuses on how people can become competent interpreters of their own experience, despite the obstacles society may put in their way. His research entails ethnography, history, and social theory. As a social analyst, Mr. Sennett continues the pragmatist tradition begun by William James and John Dewey.

His first book, The Uses of Disorder, [1970] looked at how personal identity takes form in the modern city. He then studied how working-class identities are shaped in modern society, in The Hidden Injuries of Class, written with Jonathan Cobb. [1972] A study of the public realm of cities, The Fall of Public Man, appeared in 1977; at the end of this decade of writing, Mr. Sennett sought to account the philosophic implications of this work in Authority [1980].

At this point he took a break from sociology, composing three novels: The Frog who Dared to Croak [1982], An Evening of Brahms [1984] and Palais Royal [1987]. He then returned to urban studies with two books, The Conscience of the Eye, [1990], a work focusing on urban design, and Flesh and Stone [1992], a general historical study of how bodily experience has been shaped by the evolution of cities.

In the mid 1990s, as the work-world of modern capitalism began to alter quickly and radically, Mr. Sennett began a project charting its personal consequences for workers, a project which has carried him up to the present day. The first of these studies, The Corrosion of Character, [1998] is an ethnographic account of how middle-level employees make sense of the “new economy.” The second in the series, Respect in a World of Inequality, [2002} charts the effects of new ways of working on the welfare state; a third, The Culture of the New Capitalism, [2006] provides an over-view of change. Most recently, Mr. Sennett has explored more positive aspects of labor in The Craftsman [2008], and in Together: The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of Cooperation [2012].

L’autor exposa una revisió del concepte d’espai públic i d’allò q se n’espera q hi passi. Parteix d’una ideia molt bàsica q va enriquint i sofisticant. L’espai public com a lloc on es troben els desconeguts. Que acaba sent un espai d’alliberament, aprenentatge i intercanvi però també a on busquem la indiferència i l’anonimat. Posa el focus en les grans ciutats i com l’urbanisme afavoreix o no determinades relacions socials.

És molt interessant com utilitza la definició de sistemes oberts o sistemes tancats que fan servir els biòlegs per establir comparacions i exemples q faciliten moltíssim la comprensió.

Conceptes com frontera, llindar, permeabilitat, context, intercanvi, perímetre, prenen una nova dimensió. També com la definició del concret compromet i perjudica la perdurabilitat o les definicions obertes permeten la flexibilització dels usos i l’adaptabilitat.

És un llibre molt breu, alhora q molt ric.

Bona introducció al concepte de l’espai públic. Presenta tan les diferents aproximacions que s’han fet al respecte, com els teòrics que desde diferents disciplines han contribuit en la seva conceptualització. Perfecte per un principiant en la disciplina de l’urbanisme. És un bon inici per començar a estirar del fil. Les explicacions són molt divulgatives, i sobretot, posa exemples. Es nota que Sennet és profe d’uni (ojala algun dia ser alumna seva), i vindria bastant a ser el que aspirem a ser, tant a nivell de forma com de contingut.

Tot i així la última part se m’ha fet curta. Després d’introduir al llarg de tot el llibre els conceptes de sistema obert i tancat, i com el primer és millor en termes d’urbanisme, el moment de justificar el per què es queda curt. Amb 4 o 5 pàgines enllesteix el que ha estat introduint durant les 60 pàgs prèvies…

En definitiva, ens ha agradat i ens ha deixat amb ganes de llegir ‘Construir i habitar’.

Llibre de butxaca molt ràpid de llegir en una o dues tardes. Planteja diferents maneres d'entendre l'espai públic i fa un mini repàs de les diferents escoles de pensament. Està bé!
