Xyla Turner was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She has always been a writer, even as a teenager, she wrote short stories and essays that won awards and nation-wide competitions. Xyla is an avid reader of romance novels and a sucker for sassy females and dominant males. She is a lifelong learner, High School Vice-Principal and a pretty good Auntie. Outside of reading, Xyla likes to spend time with her family and friends, experiment with dangerous adventures and travel. She writes different genres, but her favorite is romance.
Once again, Xyla is NOT afraid to go there in her books, in her discussion of today's hot button headlines regarding the police and the Black Lives Matter Movement. She presents both sides of the argument. This book really made me think and examine my own feelings and biases.
And, after meeting Victor Ritter -- I was like Ryan (10-80) Who? Victor is the man. I love the words that come out of his mouth!
I love a story that pulls you in and gets you invested into what the characters are going through, and this was definitely one of those stories. Vic and Kat are two very opinionated strong-willed individuals who were determined to make the other see their point of view, which made for some very passionate love scenes between the two. The issues that they have with each other will make you think and then rethink what you originally felt in the beginning of their journey. Life's circumstances shape who we are and how we think, which also holds true for Kat and Vic, and can possibly make you miss out some wonderful adventures that may cross our paths. The key is to listen and be open minded to others views, and what you thought you knew for sure, you may not have known at all. I loved this couples journey and the awesome background characters that made this story a great read. I loved 10-99 and give 5 well deserved stars!
3.5 stars! Vic & Kat's love story makes for a lovely read, pushing all those romance buttons : Alpha male, check, stubborn female, check, sizzling hot smexi time, check. I also loved seeing characters from the first book in this series. The only detractor was the presence of few editing quibbles.
Another great story. Talk about opposites attract. Vic and Kat is a prime example. A white cop and a strong black nurse who hate cops. Their story is very touching. Looking forward to Reggie's story in this series.
Not a bad read. Author dealt with current events OK. Just when I was about to throw it aside because of some of the "I can't be with you because.." B, the author maturely presented a reasonable pov that allowed me to continue to the end. I do understand the heroine's concerns and how traumatic past events shaped much of her view. Glad that she allowed herself to grow and recognize what the universe had to offer her....
I am so in love with Vic. OMG! He is such an Alpha. The man came, saw and conquered Kay. She didn’t stand a chance.
Kay was stubborn and though she had her reasons for disliking cops, she was misguided. I liked her growth in this story. She went from a hard-nosed know it all to a woman who actually listened and changed her perception of the world by simple communication. Once she show that tiny bit of kindness toward Vic, I knew she was going to be alright.
Vic was a cop, yes, but he was a man first. He wore his heart on his sleeve and wasn’t afraid to show his emotions, whether sad, angry or in love. He was an open book when it came to him feelings. Like he said, he was too old to play games. He knew what he wanted and he found a way to get it.
The issue with race relations and police brutality is an ongoing issue in the world. As the author so brilliantly depicted, it is not a black and white thing, but a right and wrong thing. She gave a great breakdown of what the black lives matter movement is all about. I would highly suggest any person who is still confused about it to read this book. If you are still saying “All lives matter” in 2020, this is a book that can clear that sentiment up for you. Get into it!
I dont think Kat was justified in her hatred towards an entire occupation yet once she explained I understood why she would feel that way. D'asia was right in telling Kat she couldn't get down with her stance. D'asia experienced both sides of law enforcement. After all D'asia experienced with Ryan I understood that she couldn't hate an entire occupation. Vic's relationship with Dashawn was helpful. It helped both of them. It helped Dashawn get on the right track and it helped Vic later on when he most needed it. Damn u #XylaTurner u played with my freaken emotions!!!! I believe any program that helps the community unite is important and needed. It should be given more funding and be apart of sentencing for criminals looking to be rehabilitated. Police officers should be more visible in the community . We need to remind people the people in blue are not our enemies..... more here http://bit.ly/2egg4y3
Love Vic and Kat! I bawled when DaShawn was killed....too indicative of what's happening in real life!
I can understand every characters stance because as a woman of color, I've been there, done that. We as a people need to be open minded and willing to listen.
The chemistry was off the chart, the situations were moving and the love and understanding leaped through my Kindle.
I love when I'm taken on an emotional journey....that means the author accomplished her goal.
This was a great love story, but the aspects of the story that caught my attention was the commentary on black lives matter and blue lives matter. A few of the arguments I've heard but this book gave me some food for thought.
There are things I enjoyed. There are things I disagreed with. Still, I appreciate a romance novel that sparks such deep reflection.
Here's the thing: I felt like there were stances where this author tried to compare a prejudice against cops to systemic racism. Those were not equal, to try to do that is very... disheartning, I'd say.
Of course there are bad cops and good cops. Black Lives Matter's discussion is about the police as a institution. It's such a broad discussion that demands a lot of research and care.
She chose to bring this discussion through individualization, my issue is that it should't be kept in that lane.
On the other hand, Vic realizes that endorsing a Blue Lives Matter speech can be twisted. So maybe it was a matter of this author exploring those realizations better... I just didn't feel like Vic made a deep criticism about the institution he defends. About what he stands for. But then, he's a white, straight, cis-gender male, so maybe he isn't capable of that sort of reflection, lmao, that'd be realistic, even if it's unsatisfying... I do think Kat had the more well-rounded conclusion here.
I enjoyed her allowing herself love despite her trauma. Because it was about that for her: trauma.
Overall, I think this book approaches a tough subject but it doesn't fully do its job at showing it how complex it is.
No, when you say you don't like cops, it isn't as ignorant as saying you don't like black people. For starters, one is a chosen profession, the other is a race... I could go on. This comment was made more than once as an attempt to change Kat's mind. Honestly, if I disliked cops as much as she did, that would never work.
But like I said, it can be a starting point for some discussions. If you get people to think, that's never a problem.
Also, I don't really like Kat's friend? Her going off the first time Kat spoke was so... insensitive. I wished she had a bigger support system outside of Vic.
Romance level, I didnt quite feel the chemistry. I kept waiting to understand why they were so into each other... I finished the book still confused.
There were also a few glaring editing errors. But that doesn't affect my rating.
Great read ! I'm just answering the questions or some: 1) justified is not the word I would use in Kat's case, misguided is more like it because of her experiences . Her prejudice against all cops were ingrained bc of the own mistreatment + her brother 's and then other leader ( I don't think she did truly hate them) 2) D'asia wasn't right, however Kat needed the wake up call from a true friend. Tough love and all!! 3) Vic & Dashawn relationship was beautiful and helpful, I wish there could more Vic and Dashawn in this 🌎. 4) yes we need more programs like UNITE in this country 6) Vic is wonderful human being with a heart of gold, and would die to protect his own as in pp he loves and others. A true blue! 7) I believe he learned quite a bit and still learning 9) I think Sal just made some choices and live to regret it. 10,) yes I'm ready for Reggie 11) The media has twisted the black life matters movement into something totally different than what it means: yes lives matter, however, white pp's lives always matter, it's never an issue... It means : "black lives matters also". Period. But p, the frikkin media has to make it ugly for attention purposes. Sorry if I skip one of 2!!
I enjoyed this book. I think this series is a great example of why I like Xyla Turner's writing. She deals with topics that most tread lightly over. She dives in and causes you to question yourself. In this book, it was dealing with bias and prejudices, those unspoken rules that plague our society. I like that she gave a clear picture of both sides. This book had me reeling during several parts. I liked how the main character, Kat, is called to rethink her stance and ideals. I liked that despite her stance, she was compassionate, but didn't take any mess. I liked Vic's character as well. He was strength and honor wrapped in a hot package. I enjoyed the questions Turner wrote for discussion at the end of the chapters the most. Further promoting the need for us all to talk about these very real issues. Great job Xyla. Caution: this is written for adults (language and situations).
Vic and Kat's story is more than BWWM, it's an American reality that makes you look passed the skin and to the character of the person. The story touched on a current narrative where it seems law enforcement and people of color are at odds. Where right and wrong are blurred based on what the person looks like. Xyla sought to tackle this story from different points of views while love being the core for Vic and Kat. You'll find yourself recognizing that you make hAve some biases that need to be addressed. That it can be an uncomfortable truth. Yet with friends like Ryan and D'Asias Kat and Vic were able to work through and see things from different lens
If All the BWWM books I've read, Kat and Vic are one of my favorite couples. This book tackles what is currently affecting society. I could totally understand Kay's ambivalence with developing a relationship with a Cop, in particular, Vic. They were able to find and did their best to keep each other in spite of family, friends and co-workers working hard against them. There were some heartbreaking situations that can receivers for those that have lived through similar situations. Loved this story and hope to read more about Kat and Vic as well as some of the other characters.
This book is very timely to what's happening today about blue and black lives. Vic and Kats love story is very nice it also makes you think and helps you to realize that you have to treat people as individuals and not as a group. That's something that was very difficult for Kat because of her experience with her father's murder by cops. Kat is an emergency room nurse she loves her job she's good at it. Vic is a good cop he is loyal and dedicated to his job and the people that he loves. When tragedy strikes Vic and Kat are thrown together this is a story of not judging a book by its cover.
Another good read by this author. Interesting how she was able to intertwine Black Lives Matter into this story. Although there is still conversations that need to be had about BLM I thought some of the topics here were good questions, but we as a whole (African Americans) have to be open minded to want to discuss the matter. There are still different opinions which people still say that all lives matter which is true, but there are some people who will never understand the movement and what is simply being said. Ijs
This is Vic & Kat’s story ; we met them in📕1 featuring Ryan & D’asia. This is a slow burn , but it does take off with the ✍🏼s signature style of drama, heartbreak & soulful ❤️🩹❤️!Officer Vic Ritter is a 💯, dreamy Alpha with a kind heart & works hard to bridge the gap between law enforcement & the community they serve . He purses his lady love Kat, an ER nurse with tenacity, understanding, 🥵 🌶️ & passion that pays off for them both 🥳🙌🏽. I truly love this series , but I wish the author gifted us with epilogues. Happy Reading🍷
What an amazing, unlikely yet perfect pairing. Sometimes the universe just works its magic and if you're lucky it lands right on you. Kat & Vic are opposite sides of the same coin and made for each other. This tale is full of some heavy duty real world drama and handled perfectly. The author goes there so if you have a weak stomach give it a pass. Intelligent, insightful .... and definitely on time. Well done!👏
This story line was pulled from today's headlines. Cops killing black kids and communities protesting about it. I found the relationship between Kat and Vic to be secondary to a series of thought provoking questions. Very realistic subject matter with romance and intrigue. I love the continuing update of characters, D`asia and Ryan, from the previous book. The third book in this series is up next.
I liked this one better than the first one in the series. Vic was not as pushy as Ryan. I liked that he was straightforward but let Kat make her own decisions at her own pace. Their relationship evolved more organically. I was a bit hmmm about how the situation with her brother got 'solved', and also the speeches about black/Blu lived mattering were a bit too speechy but other than that I enjoyed this read.
Once again this author take you on a ride. I loved the fact that the author take issue that we are dealing with today and present from all side. I loved me some Kat and I totally get where she coming from. Then she met Vic and realize that you can't hold everyone for something that someone else did. I look forward to read more of this author work.
Loved Vic, man I loved him! He was passionate about his role as an officer, and his feelings for Kat. I loved that Kat looked past her hatred and found love instead. This book was bittersweet for me with the subject matter, but I thought Xyla did an excellent job in voicing understanding of it! Great book!
I really enjoyed all the books in this series. They are a great commentary on our current political and social climate. Black citizens' relationship with the police is precarious at this time and the thought provoking dialogues in this series of books was enlightening. Kudos Ms. Turner for tackling such sensitive topics with respect & clarity.
Definitely appreciated this one! The first series had me somewhat perplexed and even angry. However, the one did a great job of pulling things together and putting both sides of the story out there. I wish more people could read this and understand the entire movement. Great read!!! A mustmust-read!!!
Lots of thought provoking questions this book bring to love much of what of is still happening today. Both characters needed to open their minds a bit and am glad they did. They were both good people who came together in a world thAt thinks they shouldn't. I liked God's plan for them and their future.
Code should read, "the world needs to let destined souls become one and stop trying to dictate who should love who" Soul mates should acknowledge that only ....... has the final verdict and should act accordingly
Our world is different not because it's changed it's just more openly apparent that there is still so much to do and that with interracial love is definitely a challenge and yet love is love great read!!!
I love the fact that this is a true story and not just about sex. Don’t get me wrong I love the hot scenes but I like a story to go with it. You truly have a gift for writing and I have enjoyed every book I have read so far!!!
