THE GREATEST WESTERN WRITERS OF THE 21ST CENTURY

They risked their lives to make a home in the heart of West Texas. Now the Kerrigan family must face the deadliest challenges of the land they love--and the evil that men do.

COME HELL OR HIGH WATER . . .

After a two-year drought, the Kerrigan ranch is dry as a bone and as dusty as a honky-tonk bible. On the brink of ruin, Kate Kerrigan hires the rainmaker Professor Somerset Lazarus, who promises salvation--in the form of a deluge. Kate is desperate enough to try anything. But when four angry gunmen show up, ready to lynch the phony rainmaker for swindling them out of their money, the Kerrigans have to choose sides fast--before the bullets start to fly. It doesn't take a divining rod to figure out that these unsatisfied customers want more than a refund. They have their sites set on the Kerrigan ranch. And it's just a matter of time until it's raining water or raining bullets. Either way, there will be blood . . .

The book description is completely incorrect or I somehow got a different book. The story I read involved the Kerrigan's, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and some outlaws..? Not sure what the deal is with that.

Also, what was with all the random Annie Oakley hate? How many times can the author say how mannish Annie was and how beautiful Kate is? It was weird and juvenile, it just made Kate look so petty. And what about Kate are we supposed to like again? I find her hardly a heroine and barely a protagonist.

To not end on a sour note, it gets some points. I liked Josiah Mosely and Cloud Passing and feel like a book about them having adventures across the west in the balloon would have been a much better read.

I would not discourage anybody from reading these books because regardless usually pretty good western stories. In saying that, I wasn’t too happy with the writing. Surely did not like towards the end when he put a whole chapter out of a section from the first book of the series when Kate killed the three men in five points after raping her sister. Everything was Word for Word in that section except they changed it up by saying her sister snuck away from the rapist when they were sleeping but in the first book she snuck out while they were knife fighting over her. I could never understand why the authors blatantly change things up when in a series. Another thing is how they have Hank Larry back in this book when he was killed in the previous book. Go figure.

Somehow I got hooked on western novels this summer. This is the third book of William Johnstone that I've read, and I really like his most authentic voice. I'm about to dig into another one of his books right now.

Plenty of action

There is plenty of action and some unusual characters in this story. From the rainmaker to Kate Kerrigan. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good western story.

Last book in the series

Loved the story, but hoped it would end with Kate married to Frank Cobb, but keeping her
last name. But was still great

Kerrigan_= Hate They Neighbor

Not as good as the other Kerrigan books but not bad. I thought it dragged a little but I enjoyed it.
