I'm Mia, and I dream about publishing a book on medieval Paris. Except... I’m better qualified for writing a manual on how to go from a budding scholar to a pregnant runaway in three easy steps. - - - My sister Eva carries a torch for the wrong man. Here’s the gist of my sermons to her: “Drooling over your hunky astronaut boss is a loser’s trek to Calamity with three stops along the way: Heartbreak, Job Loss, and Spinsterhood.”
The thing is, I’m in a terrible—you could even say impossible—position to lecture Eva.
I’m attracted to my own boss.
Raphael d’Arcy is funny, smart, and uber-rich. He’s also smoking hot. That alone should have scared me away, were I not such a dolt, my academic achievements notwithstanding.
But there’s more.
Raphael is France’s most notorious playboy who doesn’t do relationships. He does one-night stands. If sufficiently intrigued, he might do a fling. Which is the most I could ever hope to have with him—a short-lived fling.
So what, right? It’s not the end of the world.
But consider this: Getting my heart broken by Raphael d’Arcy is the least of my worries. Some very serious merde has been piling up in my life lately.
And it’s about to hit the fan.
RAPHAEL'S FLING is a sexy standalone romantic comedy. No cliffhangers. GUARANTEED: a swoony bad-boy hero, laugh-out-loud moments and a happily-ever-after.

As far as story ideas go, Raphael's Fling isn't a bad book. I liked the premise of the story and was looking forward to meeting Raphael and Mia. Unfortunately, the execution didn't work for me. What could've been an emotional read felt disconnected and distant. I never connected with either main character and towards the end, I have to admit I kind of gave up caring.
I also found the Parisian setting/English language combo odd. I love books set outside of the United States, but this one struck me as a book originally published in French that's since been directly translated to English without much editing. I'd come across something that just felt off and it would take me out of the story.
All things considered, it was an okay way to spend my rainey Sunday.
When stating this book I found myself lost at times. Mia was supposed to be from Europe but when reading it felt like she was from the US. And then there are times I was thinking I was experiencing a flash back on how Mia and Raphel started their fling and then boom I'm all of a sudden reading present time. It was hard for me to keep up. And for me I never got fell in love with them as a couple. It just wasn't there for me. The thing with her parents and the religious beliefs felt like over kill to me. That Gaspard story line what in the world was that? That whole thing was just odd and wasn't needed no even in least. And what she did in college just made me roll my eyes. I wanted to fall in love with the 2nd half. But nope Raphel should have been furious with her secret and went off on her. But nope we get nothing until the epilogue on the subject. We should have really got to experience them as a real actually couple and not what they use to be. I felt cheated on that. And then once again we get this Gaspard story line. Why I must ask why? It just took away from the story. What happened with Genevieve? Something serious was brought up and we really never found out what went down went that. Just told something major went down. Usually I'm a sucker for these stories and I fall all in love with everybody. Mia was funny and I had high hopes for this one. I like her and her sister. Who I'm hoping gets a story. I'll still read who I knows I may love that. I didn't hate this one. I was disappointed.
I DNF'd this one because the author ripped us off on the sex.
This girl has a sex tape of her with 4 guys. Now she's hooking up with the company boss and the author doesn't tell us any of it. Not their first time together or the months of times after. Like WTF?
Girl be gone with your prude ass.
Oh - she's an adult and couldn't tell him she started her period because of "her upbringing". Um ok.
the two best things about this book is first it was short and second I got it in a boxed set. I was so let down by this book. I found it ridiculous. It really made me question if the author understands love. I say that with a heavy heart. The couple just made me want to weep. For starters Mia Stoll was a weak h, IMO. She is in love with our H Raphael but afraid if she tells him he will leave her. They are just a booty call to the other or so they say. This was the beginning of my confusion. I had trouble believing they felt anything for the other. The relationship is just sad and shallow.
Raphael was described in book 1 as a womanizer so I wasn't totally surprised but for me this is the first book where the H has relations with other woman and the h doesn't make demands. She does after your more then half way through the book and Raphael confesses he's been faithful for quite awhile. A little light in the tunnel flashes but is snuffed out by the secrets that pile up between the two. It isn't Raphael, no, because we don't get his POV other than what he says out loud. It is Mia and all her fears of this past coming back to haunt her. You can't even take comfort in the knowledge that Raphael will fight for her and defend her because not only is he not given the chance but I'm not convinced he'd care. He was so emotionless with her possibly being with another man. There was absolutely no possessiveness on his part towards her that would indicate anything beyond a quickie.
The author spent no time convincing me as a reader that the passion went beyond cooling the fire in his jeans. The first meet was done better in this one than the first book but the relationship is so open that it is not a relationship at all. In the end this leads to the biggest mistake the author could make, again this my opinion.
Mia is being blackmailed by a man from her past and the man stalked her years prior. He also at a party when everyone was tripping made a sex tape of Mia. This was her first fear she does not want the world or Raphael to know. Why was it she couldn't trust Raphael? This is a man she loves that has had countless affairs if anyone could help her it was him! This was not the main trouble but well worth mentioning. The huge mistake is upon finding out shes pregnant with Raphael's baby she disappears for 14 months. All passion and emotion for the couple and what could have been completely died the minute the author just skips 14 months ahead. I am no fan of secrets but this just left me speechless. You want me to believe your h loves the H but does not believe in him or them enough that she tell him she's carrying his child? Let's not be soo dismissive of what a woman goes through during pregnancy. Doesn't their daughter, Lily, deserve to know?! What's worse even after being reunited she lies about it! She has no intention of telling him!
******************END OF SPOILER*******************
After the 14 month separation she just begins having sex with the H again as though nothing has changed. Yes, folks we just wheel the stroller in the other room with a sleeping child and have it like jack rabbits in the room across the hall. I had absolutely no respect for her. The author, however, decides to show how her strength lies in her ability to tell Raphael that she will no longer get Brazilians for him any longer. This is what the author believes would show strength? Strength comes from loving yourself enough to tell the man you're in love with just that I am more than just a plaything. Strength comes from demanding that he be a man and either commit or walk away. But instead she is not only lying to herself but to Raphael and Lily.
What kind of life is this and in the end we are made to believe all can just be resolved so quickly, neatly and completely? I was not! I was furious that this was what we are supposed to find hot and romantic. The sex was not hot because the couple were just too shallow. There was very little character development and we did not get to truly witness but be told the changes. We are to be reassured when Raphael tells Mia that while they were broke up he only had 3 one night stands in 3 weeks and then one serious girl who only lasted a week while she was gone for 14 months. Which is like throwing ice water on everything for me! She carries on with him all through the book convinced he is with other woman while with her and doesn't demand for a more prominent figure in his world. Everything is secret and they don't discuss personal things with the other much. That is odd to me if you are in love. In the end if you haven't gathered I was annoyed and to top it off Sebastian and Diane are totally left out. We see Seb a few times and there was that moment that connects a timeline with book 1 but nothing else is there. I don't think I will ever be ready for book 3 as I am not sure that the author and I see love in the same light. I feel sorry for anyone who believes that this is what love should feel and be like. I do not mean to be condescending in that sentence but please ladies demand more for yourself! You can't love anyone if you can't love yourself!
I really enjoyed this book, and was very pleasantly surprised. Mia, had a fling with Raphael, the CEO of the company where she was employed. That is the bare bones of the book.
This book was so much more. There were unexpected twists and turns. There were surprising layers to Raphael. You got to experience the full gambit of Mia's emotions while she worked through her relationships with Raphael and her parents. Eva had a great relationship with her sister and a solid relationship with her parents, although she didn't quite believe it.
I liked Mia and Raphael. I liked that they liked each other. Their conversations were humorous. Their chemistry was great. I would definitely recommend this book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy.
This was my first book by this author and I will say that it really wasn't a bad read. I say that because reading through the reviews many people didn't like it. It was a little disappointing how Mia handled some things but thankfully she fixed it in the end. I won't say much else. It would really ruin the last part of the book. I'm just glad they got their happily ever after.
What I loved most about Raphael is that he had the sexy, playboy vibe going WITHOUT being a jerk! He was sweet and caring without being "tamed" or boring. Even when he committed to one woman, he never lost his character.
I loved the story of how Raphael and Mia met, and Mia's strength and independence even though she was a goner for Raphael.
This was a fast, extremely enjoyable, treat to read.
I loved this book! It is now one of my favorites by Alix. It was a true love story that had me rooting for the couple throughout the book. Raphael D'Arcy owns and is the CEO of D'Arcy Consulting. He is known as a womanizer and never staying with a woman more than a couple of times. He is rich and good looking. All his female employees are trying to hook up with him. The company has a Christmas party where everyone must dress up. Mia, who's is working on her Ph.D and working at D'Arcy Consulting dresses up as Rudolph in a onesie and mask. She dances with a Olaf the snowman in a onesies and mask, then later is on the balcony cooling off when the snowman comes out on the balcony with her. They talk some, but never trade names. They do share a kiss. Mia's coworker is calling her name to go home, so she leaves the snowman on the balcony. In January Mia finds a note on her keyboard to meet Olaf in the room off the balcony where they met. She goes, but doesn't understand why he wants to meet there. Here she finds out he is Raphael the big boss and owner of the company. She is going to walk away, but his draw is too powerful. She decides she will enjoy what they have while they can. In the meantime she gets messages from someone trying to blackmail her with something that happened in her college days. You need to rad the book to see what happens.
The characters in this book are phenomenal. I loved the relationship Mia had with her sister and her coworkers. Mia and her coworkers sounded like that were able to have fun and were good friends. Raphael had something happen to him with a woman at work five years earlier. He also felt like he was just like his womanizing father and would never be able to settle down. Mia worked hard supporting herself while working on her Ph.D. Mia's mother was a paster and her father an ex-cop who always tried to instill morals into the girls. Especially no sleeping with a man before they were married. The story in the book was so fascinating that you didn't want to put the book down. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book.
Raphael and Mia meet at an office party while in costume. They don't exchange their real names and Mia has no idea that Raphael is the CEO of the company. When Raphael reaches out a few weeks later, a secret relationship ensues. In the meantime, someone from Mia's past is scheming to blackmail her due to a sordid college event. In order to keep this past event secret from her "religious" parents and Raphael, Mia makes some life-altering decisions.
Oh, how I love Raphael. His personality was such a surprise when compared to his brief introduction and cameos in Find You in Paris. Although the story is told from Mia's POV, Raphael's characterization is vivid and detailed. I felt like I knew Raphael's true colors, while Mia and even Raphael couldn't look past his reputation. Regardless of how their relationship begins, Raphael and Mia are sweet, playful and loving with each other. It wasn't hard to be endeared to both characters. If I'm being honest, though, due to her conservative upbringing and my own naivete, I was a little bit shocked by Mia's past permissive behavior. At the same time, I appreciated how the author portrayed Mia's parents and didn't mock or belittle their Christian faith, but instead showed how forgiveness and grace was an integral part of their beliefs.
This is my 5th story by Alix Nichols and I have enjoyed each story more or as well as the previous. It's hard for me to describe why I enjoy them so much except that I simply connect to her writing style. Even if one of her stories follows a familiar romance trope, the reader still gets a completely unique experience unlike the typical romance book.
I received a copy of Raphael's Fling from the author. My review is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Ah. poor Mia. She is a seemingly self-aware, intelligent doctoral candidate working at a low-level job in Paris to pay the tuition. She has a loving, very moral, religious family in Alsace, a rather provincial area near Germany and Switzerland. Her mom is a pastor. Her love life will certainly cause misunderstandings.Raphael D'Arcy, is a wunderkind auditor, from an aristocratic family. He is of course, exceedingly wealthy (he created a billion dollar audit firm). achingly beautiful and muscular, and a bit of a man-whore. All before he is 30 years of age! At the company costume party, our hero and heroine meet, with flying sparks and no names given. An invitation to meet later, given by the hero, is where the fun and trouble begins. Except. Mia has a "big secret" which will cause havoc later. The story follows the lust story of Raphael and Mia, with many cursory sex scenes, with Mia expressing (to herself) her concerns about what happens if her relationship with the boss is exposed, and what happens if her secret is exposed, how is she to pay for tuition, will she succeed and get her doctorate etc. How the the couple get to Happily Ever After is actually interesting. Ms. Nichols wrote a satisfying ending, using humor and engaging dialog. Her character development of Mia was complete. Raphael, on the other hand was somewhat one-dimensional. His change of mind-set and behavior was not as clearly delineated. Still, this is a good, solid romance. I recommend it, and other books by the author. Bon appetit!
Alix Nichols loves her Paris settings and it shows when she writes her books since the description of the area seems so incredibly vivid that you'd swear you were there. Raphael's Fling is a small conundrum for me, especially considering that the last novels I've read by her was her La Boheme series which encompasses the true Parisian experience - I wasn't too sure if I should be reading a story about an American's view in Paris or an American in Paris. Both point of views are incredibly different and kept me on the fence until I realized that Mia is simply a woman out on a limb in a new country hoping that she doesn't get rejected by the man she's had feelings for longer she'd care to admit.
3 cuddle worthy dreams
Raphael and Mia's relationship was nothing less than an actual one - there were ups and downs that you'll find in any other, and the hardest they've had to deal with was learning if some things (or secrets) were able to be forgiven. As beautiful as the story was, it also left me with some questions and I do wonder if having had a chance to read the first instalment would have helped. That to say that I still did enjoy the novel but just maybe I'll be able to thoroughly enjoy it better if I read it a second time, only I'll start with the first in the series.

This is such a great book! It is descriptive and touches your heart.
This book is about Mia. She meets Raphael at a Christmas party without knowing. She starts a "fling" and falls head over heels with him. She not one of those women who think they can change her. She's different from all the other women who throw themselves at him. Raphael is rich, gorgeous and a ladies' man. All women that he encounters always throw themselves at them. The skirt ends up too high or the button on their blouse is open just a little too much.
Raphael and Mia meet a costume Christmas party and the attraction is instant. Mia is different from all the women that Raphael has dated. She's intelligent and sexy. They have fun and make a deal where they are exclusive. Mia does question herself because she falls in love with him. How could she not?
Then something happens and she has a couple secrets. She runs away from Raphael and her life. She comes back for a couple days and her old haunts come back to her. She stands up to some people and finally tells the truth. She can't hide from it anymore.
This book took a while for me to get excited in. The only reason is because I was expecting Raphael. I read about Sebastian who makes an appearance in this book.
VERY ENJOYABLE BOOK This book is a fun and sexy read with a great story- line that kept you turning the pages. Mia and Raphael begin a fling after they meet at a costume company Christmas party. Neither one of them is looking for a relationship, but can't stay away from each other. I love the chemistry between Mia and Raphael. Things become interesting when her past comes back to haunt her and she is being blackmailed. Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to her next book. I voluntarily reviewed this book that was gifted to me by this author with no obligation. Patsy Sacco
Raphael's Fling by Alix Nichols is a sexy contemporary romance that will entice many. It hooked me from page one. I was entertained. The plot was fast and held my attention immediately. I was drawn into the drama and realistic scenes. After having read Find You in Paris, I was looking forward to reading this new title. It was just as hot.
Inside this title, I met Raphael d'Arcy. He's an alpha male that can make any woman swoon on spot. His sexy looks and money make every woman want him. However, Alix Nichols has created more than beats the eye to this man. He has had a past involving a woman and that's where he's at now. He was just going through life until he met Mia...
Mia is a graduate student working to pay for her tuition. She works at Raphael's company. Like all the other women, she has the hots for her boss. She knows he's a player and that nothing will come of their affair, if they ever have one. Until one kiss, Mia didn't think she'd ever share anything with her sexy boss. However, lightening strikes, and that leaves Mia's world spiraling out of control. All thatshe had held dear may just be lost. Someone is threatening her...and only time will tell where she and Raphael will stand once it's over...
Raphael's Fling is by far the most enchanting real-life tale. Romance that tugs at my heart and sends me deeper into suspense. So many things can happen and did. Readers will have to dig into the book for the details..overall, I loved it. Believable, heart melting, and stunning. I highly recommend this book to all.
A charming, heartfelt read told in first person that I couldn't put down once I picked it up.
Mia is pursing her doctorate degree in Paris, but she still works to pay the bills. She never intended to begin a relationship, actually that was the last thing she ever wanted to do, her studies took up most of her free time, but somehow she ended up deep in an affair with her boss. Well, not technically her boss, but the CEO of the company, so the big, big, BIG boss. Raphael d'Arcy himself.
Not only has she broken her mother's rule to procreate before marriage (her mother is a pastor), okay to be honest Mia broke that rule years ago, but what I'm talking about is her own rule of sleeping with someone she works with. Mia promised she'd never have sex with someone from work. So what is she doing and more importantly why couldn't she stop?
Why did Raphael have to be so sexy? So charming? So handsome? Just so Raphael?
She is going to break it off. She really is. She knew it would never last. His so-called "relationships" never did. She hated being a dirty secret. Well maybe not the dirty part that was actually nice. So, maybe next week she'd have the willpower to call it quits. But right now with Raphael and all the dirty thoughts running around in her head next week sounded like a much better idea. Yeah.
Raphael's Fling was a fun read. It had twists and turns which is why once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. Mia suffered from the same angst and insecurities every woman does, even if we weren't sleeping with the boss. Even Raphael was relatable. He wasn't over the top and didn't make grand gestures that were out of character. Actually I loved that they both moved at their own pace and never broke character to make outlandish gestures.
To some their romance may have seemed subtle, but it was in the small things that Raphael did, that Mia didn't always notice at first herself, that made the story romantic. At one point, Mia sat in retrospect and realized that Raphael had ruined her for every other man because of those little things. He always seemed to know when she was unhappy or upset. He also knew the things that made her excited and what she liked. He took the time to take an interest in her dissertation, her interests. For in those small things he made grand gestures of love. That made my heart melt.
This was the second book in this series and I didn't read the first, yet. I am hoping to pick it up in the new year. However, I didn't feel lost or like I'd missed anything. If you are like me and also haven't read the first book, but want to dive right into Raphael's Fling you shouldn't have any trouble. Just a heads up there is a third book in the works which will be about the youngest brother, but I don't believe a publication date has been set yet.
This is the second book in the Darcy Brothers series, and continues to build on the people and friends of the La Boheme eatery books.
Mia Stoll is assistant to the daily bulletin editor at D’Arcy Consulting and Audit. She’s made a couple of decent mistakes in her life, the least of them being involved in an affair that violates her own personal code of honour – sleeping with the boss. The BIG mistake, from five years ago in college, is her own personal secret, that if revealed, may result in the devastation of her parents’ love and support for her, along with her credibility as she prepares to complete her doctoral program and defend her thesis, which is about the history of Prostitution in Medieval Paris.
The middle D’Arcy brother is CEO Raphael D’Arcy, and it is he, the boss’s boss’s boss with whom Mia is having a fling. Even though they are keeping things casual and on the down-low, Mia knows that Raphael is a recidivist playboy, knows it is going no-where and is trying to create some space between them, something that Raphael is not yet ready for, even though the time they’ve spent together has outlasted any of his previous liaisons to date.
With a mother as a church Pastor, and a father who adamantly respects the calling his wife has chosen, and both of whom still believe that Mia and her sister Eva, lead pure lives, Mia is aware of her parents disappointment should they find out about her sexual history and, thus it is only Eva who is aware of Raphael’s involvement in Mia’s life. Adding to her stress is contact in the form of some very vague letters from someone who seems like they are leading up to blackmail, and she thinks her five year old secret is the reason why. When the perpetrator finally reveals himself, her worst fears are realised, and his demands are despicable. There is only one option left for her – to run.
Raphael’s Fling is a hot and fun book with a side of intrigue, and will also appeal to those readers who have love Alix’s other books surrounding La Boheme. There is also an element of second chances. I am also going back to read past books to find out the back stories of some of the other characters, and absolutely adore the loyalty they all share among them. 4.5 Stars I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
Arc review for honest review. Raphael and Mia had a affair 14 months ago that gave them Lily but he didn't know yet this story shows that a man can and does take responsibility for his actions. a awesome love story.
This is the second in Alix Nichols’ series featuring French brothers named Darcy. The first book, Find You in Paris, had a deliberate connection to Pride and Prejudice. I was hoping for another Austen tie-in, but didn’t detect it here. Our heroine, Mia, works at D’Arcy Consulting where she has been having an affair with the hunky, womanizing boss, Raphael D’Arcy. They have a meet-cute at a Christmas party where she is dressed as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and he’s come as Olaf the Snowman. They have a fun, flirty discussion on the balcony with her having no idea that the snowman is actually her boss. They get to know each other without having their attraction simply based on sexual attraction.
The book switches back and forth between current time and flashbacks. So we meet Mia and Raphael once their affair has already started. We just have to find out what complication is going to ensue and how they’re going to meet it. We need to find out if Raphael can get over his reluctance to get involved in a serious relationship and whether Mia where get over her reluctance to carry on an affair with her boss. She also is ashamed of her behavior because her parents are very socially conservative and apparently think that she and her sisters are virgins. That plotline was a bit unbelievable. And she seems to have an easy time finding jobs whenever the plot demands it of her. I somehow expect that jobs for specialists in medieval Europe aren't that easy to come by.
I was really enjoying this book through the first half. It all gets resolved rather quickly and easily. Given the plot complications that pop up in the latter half of the book, I would have anticipated a little more angst and difficulty with settling everything.
I always enjoy Nichols’ style and the contemporary French settings for her novels.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a continuation of the first in the series, with characters from the first book appearing in this one too. However, you do not have to have read the first book to enjoy this one.
This second book is all about the Casanova d’Arcy brother, Raphael. More playful than the first, beginning with the hilarious way our hero and heroine meet in the story—dressed as Olaf the snowman and Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer at a Christmas party—we get a unique love story. It starts as a secret office fling, moves to juicy (still secret) exclusivity, then to scandalous, and finally to a truly mature relationship. I love the progression of falling in love that happens to Raphael—from interested, to intrigued, to ‘in lust’, to ‘in love’—and the way it sneak attacks him. Mia is the oddest mixture of nerd scholar and confident minx. It is a combination that somehow works and makes her immensely likable as the heroine of the story, realistically struggling with her secret office romance, her strict upbringing, and her past. You really just want both of them to fess up to loving each other and live happily ever after. That is one thing I can always count on from Alix’s books…you really root for the characters. I just adore the ending to this book and, to me, it perfectly fits their unusual relationship journey. I implore you to read this book so you can laugh along and enjoy that ending too. It would be a perfect weekend or holiday break read.
Alix did a wonderful job of continuing the d'Arcy world while staying true to the current brother's story. I highly recommend reading all of this series
•Hilarious Talk about a funny but oh so sexy straight forward guy who doesn't hide the fact that he's Paris' biggest playboy. Raphael d'Arcy also freely admits he doesn't want a relationship, and definitely doesn't want to get married. He's got everything, money, career and any woman he wants, what else is there? Mia is working for D’Arcy Consulting and Audit (aka DCA), as the assistant to the daily bulletin editor, while she finishes her doctoral program. She surely doesn't ever have any intent on sleeping with the BIG boss CEO Raphael d'Arcy. However after the company Christmas party, she finds out just whom the Olaf snowman that she'd made out with on the balcony was.... And the Casanova that Raphael is already had her sweet talked in. She could've and should've walked away, but something about him wouldn't let her, even when she found out who he actually is. What happens between Raphael and Mia? You'll have to read Raphael's Fling to find out. There are lots of things that happen, especially to Mia throughout the story. This was my first Alix Nichols story, but I look forward to seeing if any of her other work has the funny character banter as this one. I received an ARC via Tasty Book Tours via BookFunnel in exchange for an honest blog tour review. Due to sexual content this novel is recommended for readers 18 and older! Favorite Passages~ ~ whatever force hurtles me over the edge, and however high the cliff, I know I won’t splinter and burst to pieces. There’s enough love around me—and in my heart—to cushion my fall. ~ “It’s a really sweet plan.” “It’s because I’m a really sweet man,”
Genre: Romance Stand-alone: Yes Part of a Series: Yes. Book 2 of the D'Arcy Brothers series. Raphael's Fling focuses on Raphael and Mia. Sebastian and Diane show up briefly but their story is not an integral part of this story POV: Mia's Steam level: Steamy in parts 4.5/5
At this point it's safe to say that I've read all of Alix Nichols published book. It's been wonderful to see her grow in her craft. Raphael's Fling is no exception. Nichol's storytelling is emotional, witty and fun to read. She makes her characters come to life, makes you care about what happens to them. I found myself smiling throughout with either the outright humor between the Mia and Raphael or her friends and the slower moments when you realize that Mia didn't get a joke or reference. My only disappointment was that Nichols didn't really address the concepts behind "the calamity." Partially this is due to what I do for a living but I can understand why she didn't. I also like the way that Nichol's wrapped up that storyline. I also loved the fact that there was an epilogue. Fans of Alix Nichol's works know that she has previously struggled with this. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and all of Nichol's future works.
I received an Advanced Copy of this book for free from the author and am voluntarily giving an honest review.
First off, this book was not nearly long enough. I want so much more of these characters. I want so much more of this couple.
I quickly fell for Raphael. His is everything a woman would want, wrapped in one tight little package. Smart, funny, hard working, sexy, good in the sack. All around perfect. Except for one simple fact. He never intends to settle down. He doesn't date. He doesn't stay with anyone for very long. He doesn't see marriage and kids in his future.
Mia was just looking for a way to get herself through school. She wasn't looking for a hookup, much less a fling. Especially with her boss. They both know each other is supposed to be off limits, but it doesn't stop them. Not by a long shot. When her past catches up with her, it threats to mess up all her plans. Not knowing who to turn to or what to do, she goes with the only choice she thinks she has.
This story completely surprised me. Raphael surprised me. My heart went out to Mia and the things she was going through. I'm super said this is a standalone and there isn't another book to accompany it. I loved the little laughs throughout, even during the serious conversations. I loved them as a couple and seeing them grow.
The first time Mia sees Raphael, they're both in silly costumes and she starts to fall for him, not knowing he runs the company she works for. Raphael is known for his playboy ways and vows never to settle down. When Mia's past comes back to haunt her, she has to make some tough choices, regarding her work, life and Raphael. I loved this book as much as the first one, but in its own way. I love how Mia is strong-willed and could care less about Raphael's wealth. Twists and turns that keep you reading until...it's after 2 am now, but definitely worth the coffee I'll need in four hours!
A story of work romance born out of deception but also love too. With blackmail and a couple secrets thought forgotten tossed in. This is a rollercoaster ride you don't want to miss.
Mia Stoll's life has been turned upside down since her run in with a snowman named Olly at the company party. Only Olly wasn't who he said he was. Now she's doing her boss when ever they can get together, even at the risk of getting caught at work. Even though its out of a convenience for Raquael, he's starting to fall for the girl at his work place. The only reason she even took the job at DCA Paris offered was to get a good paycheck, to help with her scholarship program, and get her doctoral. Sleeping with the big guy wasn't on her radar at all. Its justa matter of time before someone finds out. But then whats worse it seems someone knows and is sending her creepy messages about spreading the news. Not only that but if her moma and papa find out about any of her activities she will surely pay the price.... is she willing to go all out for the man who turned her life upside and be with him? Or will she run away from it all ti escape?
I received a free book and voluntarily chose to review it. Everyone knows how office romances go in books and how they go in real life. Lately, it seems as if I pick all the sad books to review. There was a short bit of sadness, but I survived it. It is a well written, flowing nicely book with Mia’s circumstances being realistic.
A holiday fling that encompassed much more than your average short term relationship. There was a bit of drama, humor, mystery, and of course passion, lust, and then some. Mia preached to her sister about life’s issues with lusting for your boss. Only to find that her one night with a stranger would turn in to her boss and the possibility of more. A fling was proposed and things just take off from there. I found the focus to be on Mia. This was her story and the way she handled life.
I found the characters to be engaging. I felt there was more to Raphael than we could see through the eyes of Mia. Her life was not a bed of rose and glasses of Champaign. She has a lot going on and coming for her. I enjoyed what I read and felt that it related to the feel of a read that I expect from Nichols.
I am an unabashed fan of Alix Nichols' novels. Each is more delightful than the last--regardless of in which order you may read them. Her heroines are smart and sassy, her heroes equally smart--although not necessarily about relationships. And they are set in Paris.
Reared by loving but strict and religious parents, Mia cannot fathom how to tell them of her fall from grace while in college plus the further situation in which she now finds herself; and now the merde is about to fly. Interweaving several layers of complexity with descriptions of Paris and food . . . Of course there's fabulous food, and even an ode to a baguette! . . . this tale will have you laughing and crying with Mia as she struggles for control of her life.
When does a fling become something else?Mila has a good job she is working hard on her PHD but she is also sleeping with the boss and things are going well but there is no future in this arrangement. Mila made a mistake in college and someone is blackmailing her and there is only one thing that she can do. She runs and has her baby in secret. Raphael knew that Mia was special so he was surprised when she up and left, he has followed her progress since he just didn't know that she had a baby. Can Mia ever see a future for them and will the blackmailer leave her alone so that she can find some peace? Has Raphael changed his ways or will it all be for nothing? A great story made me laugh be angry and hope for their future. I was lucky enough to get a copy from the author.
I have loved everything Ms. Nichols writes and this is no exception. When it first starts out one may be unsure of what is going on but if you pay attention to the actions of the characters and the situations, a read between the lines if you will, you find a really nice story. Raphael is Sebastian's brother and runs a different part of the d'Arcy company. Mia is a Graduate student working towards her PhD while working for Raphael. They meet and start a "fling" that has far reaching consequences. I loved the story and how we see all of Mia's thoughts and learn a lot about Raphael by his action more then his actual words sometimes. This overall proves that no matter what you think about your life love is the base for it all.
