From USA Today Bestselling Author, Renée Carlino, comes a totally unique love story that is sure to make you question what’s out there . . . or who.

“My guardian angel is a drunk.”

Evelyn Casey's life is at a standstill. She's in her mid-twenties, struggling with the dating scene in San Francisco. Nothing seems to be working out, and she’s starting to think that she’ll live out her days in her crummy apartment with her overbearing roommate, Brooklyn. It's absurd, but sometimes Evey longs for a guardian angel to show up and save the day.

And then he does. Seriously. His name is Lucian and he's a guardian angel, been on the job for two thousand years. His sudden presence in her life is both good—he's brilliant, witty, and warm—and bad—he's brilliant, witty, warm, and hot as ----. But as perfect as Lucian seems, he’s got problems of his own. He’s taken up drinking and he’s brazenly inserted himself into Evey’s life, going against the greatest cosmic law ever created.

For Evey, the rules are simple: You are not allowed to hook up with your guardian angel. But sometimes fulfilling your destiny requires a leap of faith, a confrontation with God.

Yes, God as in God.

I’ve read every Renee Carlino book out there, and I have to say Lucian Divine is much different than her other reads. That being said, it still made me FEEL which is one of the things Carlino is known for. It also made me laugh out loud more times than I can count! This book was highly entertaining, emotional, and a lot of fun to read!

“I follow you around because I’m a guardian angel. I’m your guardian angel.”

“Great, so my guardian angel is a perverted narcissist.”

Who here loves Angel books? *raises both hands*. Lucian has been Evey’s guardian angel from the moment she was born. He’s seen her through everything, but she’s never seen him. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. Until Lucian decides to break all the rules and not only show himself, but tell Evey who he is. Lucian has been a guardian angel for 2000 years. He’s had a lot of souls to watch over during this time, but none of them have had the effect Evey has on him. Lucian is trouble for doing this, but he can’t help it. He feels for Evey a way that angels aren’t supposed to feel for humans. He feels love.

Evey and Lucian’s love story was so romantic and fantasitcal. Evey is someone who has big dreams. I love that Lucian supported her dreams. I loved them together so much. Forbidden love is one of my favorite story lines and this is about as forbidden as it comes. Lucian was an amazing character. He was funny, charming and totally love sick when it came to Evey. I loved the way he loved her, and how protective he was of her (and not just because it was his job).

The story had a great flow- it was one I didn’t want to put down. Now that ending… if I could get a second book about these two, or at least a novella I would be forever grateful! Although this is a stand-alone and the ending was not a cliffy or anything like that, I wanted so much MORE! If you’re looking for a gorgeous and unique romance, with a lot of heart, emotion, and some comedy thrown in- pick up Lucian Divine!!

”You are everything to me. You’re the dream, the air, the reason, the cause for my whole existence. If I die today right in front of you, it won’t be because I gave up. I’ll never give up. There is no God that can keep me from you. I’d die ten thousand times for you.”

I don’t think I will ever think of a guardian angel the same way after having read LUCIAN DIVINE. Prior to reading this book my only visual of a guardian angel in my head was Frankie Avalon from the 1978 movie Grease, and that guy was never sexy to me!! Well, this story knocked me sideways!! I couldn’t help but to devour it and my heart was stolen by the sweet, sexy and intoxicating angel named Lucian. I haven’t read a paranormal romance in quite some time but this week I’ve gotten a hefty dose of the genre and I realize that I need to make sure that I read at least one a month!! I hope that this will not be the last paranormal romance that Renee Carlino writes because that would be considered a “sin” in my eyes. Now there may be some people who because of their religious beliefs, might get offended by the subject matter, and although I believe in God, I am not a highly religious person. I viewed this as a seriously beautiful and romantic fantasy.

Evey Casey is a young woman with an aspiring career as a fashion designer. She shares a loft in San Francisco with her bestie and for the most part, she is quite satisfied with her life. Except her love life has never been all that exciting. After breaking up with a guy whom she thought had potential but ended up being like all the other losers she’d ever hooked up with, she meets a stunningly handsome stranger in a bar up the street from her apartment. He’s definitely imbibed enough scotch to kill an ox but something about his demeanor is charming and very soothing to Evey. He ends up walking her home and then for some reason she’s inviting him up to her place. Lucian ends up telling her that he’s her guardian angel and although she thinks he must be insane, she isn’t the least bit afraid of him. He soon leaves her apartment but they end up running into each other again and ultimately she will learn that he has in fact been her Guardian Angel for most of her life.

Lucian is in some serious trouble with the man upstairs because he has broken all kinds of rules by revealing himself to Evey. He is ordered to erase himself from Evey’s memories, and although he does as he’s ordered somehow his attempt was not 100% effective. The fact that Evey starts to remember Lucian is not a hardship for him, he has been in love with Evey for quite some time and watching her go out with other men was literally putting him through hell.

As Evey and Lucian grow closer, a love that defies all odds blossoms between them. But as their love grows stronger, Lucian is starting to go through some changes and he’s also being shunned by other angels whom he considered to be friends. There is a dark looming cloud hanging over this couple and their future seems so uncertain.

Can the impossible become reality? Can an angel and a human have a happily ever after, especially when it goes against God’s rules?

This story had me wanting to believe in the impossible. It was heartbreaking and hopeful all at the same time. I had only read one other book by Renee Carlino prior to reading this one but I definitely know I’ll be getting to all the books I have missed by this talented author!

LUCIAN DIVINE releases on January 9th. You’ll definitely want to add this to your reading TBRs!

Do you believe in guardian angels? How would you feel if you met a hot drunk guy at a bar, and he told you he was yours? I would probably think he was joking or insane, and that is pretty much what Evey thinks when she first meets Lucian. Don’t worry. This isn’t one of those stories where the angel spends the entire book trying to convince the heroine that he really is an angel. He does something shocking right away that doesn’t leave any doubt that he is who he says he is. Instead, Lucian Devine is a tale of forbidden love between a woman and her angel.

This standalone paranormal romance was my introduction to Renee Carlino’s writing. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, and I have no bias based on being a fan of her previous work. I realize the paranormal genre is new to this author, so I went into this with an open mind and high hopes.

Now that I have completed the novel, I am having trouble rating and reviewing it. This is mostly due to the fact that I had conflicting emotions while reading it, and because of the way it ended. In the beginning, I thought this was going to be a 5 star read for me. Hell, even the prologue was perfect. Before long, I was smiling from ear to ear. I may have read a couple of lines out loud to my husband and had a little laugh. All of a sudden, things began to happen that had me scratching my head in confusion.

What made me enjoy it so much in the beginning? I absolutely loved the introductions to the main characters and the rest of the angels. Their interactions were interesting and entertaining. I loved the banter between Lucian and Evey. I loved the comical way Lucian’s friend tried to warn him away from her. Lucian more than any other character charmed me right away. He was an angel fond of whiskey that was deeply in love with the heroine to the point of breaking rules in place for thousands of years to be with her. What’s not to love?

“Evelyn, I’ve existed for more than two millennia. In two thousand years, I have watched over so many lives. At times, more than five souls were my responsibility alone. I’ve watched all of them die. I’ve held many of them while they were dying. It’s in my nature to do that, to give peace to my souls, to look out for them when I can, to sway the good ones to do the right thing, and to protect man and life here on Earth. I’ve watched over stunningly beautiful and brilliant women, but I have never felt love for any human the way I feel it for you. You are literally the air in my lungs.”

Where did things begin to go wrong? Well, remember when I said that Lucian is in love with Evey? Imagine my surprise when all of a sudden he is having sex with some random angel. I want to be clear that he and Evey were not in a relationship yet, but they were headed that way. I am not a person that is normally bothered by the hero having sex with another women even if it happens after they meet the heroine. It just needs to serve some purpose or make sense for the character at the time, and I’m good. I may not like it, but I understand why the author included it in the story. That was not the case here, and it really upset me. What happened after with the heroine upset me further, and I will just let you guess what that was. It pulled me right out of the story.

I shook that off and decided to continue with the story. I won’t stop reading a book just because I dislike one thing that happens, especially since I was absolutely loving it up until that point. What followed was a story that was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I enjoyed it, and I was frustrated with it. I got the ending I wanted, but not the way I wanted it. I enjoyed it, and was slightly disappointed by it. See? Conflicting emotions.

The parts of the story I loved had to do with Lucian and Evey’s commitment to each other no matter the obstacles standing in their way. The sacrifices Lucian and Evey were willing to make to be together was touching. I wanted for them to be able to live a long happy life together so badly. I was invested in the characters, and obviously, I credit that to the author’s writing.

At the same time, the pacing was way off. It went from being perfectly paced to me feeling like I must have missed some pages. All of a sudden, they are saying I love you and going to meet Evey’s parents. Even with the paranormal aspect involved, it seemed like too much too fast. Then, the story starts progressing at break neck speed. Regardless of the reason behind that, it affected my connection to the characters. The story would have had an even greater impact on me if it gave me time to feel all of the emotions I was supposed to feel.

Not to mention, there is a point where the novel takes on a completely different feel altogether. The heartache Lucian and Evey experience changes a romantic, light-hearted book into a tragic and depressing one. Combine that with the change in pace, and it was almost like I was reading two different author’s writing instead of one. The couple begins to argue often. Evey starts to feel suffocated by Lucian. She keeps complaining about the need for more normality in their relationship. Acting like she has no idea why he might feel protective, she makes it known that she doesn’t like the way he always wants to watch over her now. Things between them are changing. When he is very ill, they are still fighting. Why did all of that happen? Who knows? Not me. It just made me feel really bad for Lucian, and that maybe he made the ultimate sacrifice for nothing. I thought maybe the author was trying to make them realize they were wrong for each other or that sometimes reality doesn’t live up to the fantasy, but I was wrong. Nothing ever comes from this fighting. I want to talk about this further, but I will spoil too much of the book, so I am going to leave it at that.

During the story, information given about the angels and God is extremely vague. They have never seen God. Lucian did, however, know Jesus. He, nor any other angel, ever asked Jesus any of the questions they had I guess. That makes no sense, but okay. The people over Lucian never have any definitive information about anything. They don’t know what’s happening to Lucian. Lucian and the other angels don’t even know if there is a heaven. Where do angels go when they “die?” How did they become angels in the first place? In the end, we don’t really find out the answer to any of those questions. We don’t even find out how the ending was allowed to happen or the details of what actually happened to make it possible! I was left with so many questions that will never get answers, and that frustrated the heck out of me!

“Evey, next time, in the next life we’ll be together—that’s how this will be corrected. This will be righted. This can’t be our forever fate. Next time we’ll live together, we’ll die together. We’ll experience every war together, inside ourselves and outside in the world. We won’t be out of reach, unavailable, unattainable, just love longing to be. Let’s keep moving fast in opposite directions. Keep praying we meet on the other side. I’ll see you there; I know I will. I have to believe that. Watch for me. I’ll be barreling toward you, arms wide open, and then we’ll crash into each other with the force of two spent lives yearning to be one.”

Overall, I enjoyed Lucian Devine, but I wanted more from it. The story grabbed me right away, and I read the whole book in one sitting. I was invested in the characters, and their relationship immediately. The story warmed my heart and broke it, then put it back together again. I wanted to rate this book four stars, but as I started writing this, I realized it is more like a three.

Would I recommend this book to others? If you like paranormal romance or are a fan of Renee Carlino’s work, I still think you should give this a try. You may find that you aren’t bothered by the same things that I am, and even if you are, that you enjoy it anyway. The majority of reviews I have seen rated this 4 or 5 stars.

“Isn’t love supposed to be easy? Isn’t love supposed to be fun? The moment you fall in love, you become acutely aware of all the different ways the person you love can die. It’s sickening. It’s morbid and painful and heart-wrenching, and it’s all totally worth it.”

Will I read more of the author’s work? Absolutely.

Okay first of all I have to confess. I have a thing for fallen angels / guardian angels stories. So maybe because of that, I liked this one. And I have a big girl crush on Lucian. :) He was so funny and sweet. <3

This book could be 5 stars for me but I have to admit that everything and I mean everything happened super fast. I felt like I'm reading a novella not a book. They met (I mean first Lucian showed himself to her) and then boom! Lucian told to Evelyn that he is her guardian angel and then they fell in love Do you understand what I am trying to say? ( If you read the spoiler, you knew what I meant. :D) Okay but still I enjoyed reading their story because I felt their connection. And because of that I'm giving 4 stars to this book!

Oh also, I really liked the ending. It was so sweet! And I wish there were more pages. Because I'd love to read more about them. :) <3

…that is love. That is life. Brutal and beautiful all in the same.”

This is only my second Renee Carlino book, and I have to say, she thinks of the most intriguing plots I’ve encountered! It was interesting and I found myself getting more attached to the story as I read it. As someone who was raised by religious Catholic parents, I honestly didn't know what to feel when I first started. I did my best to read it with an open mind though. Some might not feel comfortable with how angels and even God were portrayed, so a bit of warning there.

Lucian Divine is a story told in alternating POVs that takes forbidden romance to a whole new level. Evelyn has a less than stellar love life, and after that disastrous end of a date, she doesn’t expect to meet someone who would change her life. Lucian is the drunk guy at the bar who claims to be her guardian angel.

This is fun, Lucian. You have quite the imagination. My life is complete now. I’ve met an angel who sits in bars, binge drinking and playing stupid songs on the jukebox.”

Like a literal angel, wings and all. She thinks he’s hilarious––drunk, possibly clinically insane, but hilarious––but when he suddenly proves what he’s saying is true, she doesn’t find him so hilarious anymore. But there is a connection there, and soon they can’t resist.

Lucian knows there are rules in his job, and he knows he’s broken more than he knows. But he loves Evey, and they’ll do everything in their power to be happy together. The thing is,

Jesus forgives, but there are rules for a reason.”

What I loved about the book:

The angels. I love how they were portrayed in this story where they were given more human aspects you would not usually associate with angels.

The premise. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never read a story like this before. I just had the read it the moment I read the blurb. I wanted to know the story would go and how their love story would unfold.

The feelings it brought me. Like I’ve said above, this book made me think about my existence and what I’m doing with my life. It made me think of the mysteries in life and if fate and whoever is above (if there is one above; I’m still in the team “God’s up there”) have anything to do with each other.

Lucian. He’s not an easy angel to love, but he’s charming in his own cocky way. He cares about Evey, obviously since he’s her guardian angel, and he’s always looked out for her, going way more than an angel would for his/ her soul.

The ending. By 80%, I was ready to cry for the star-crossed lovers. The ending made me so happy, so hopeful. I was grinning by the end, okay?

Why not 5 stars then?

Plot holes and Pacing. I think the story ended with more questions than answers. The story in general felt rushed as well. Things happened in a snap and sometimes I felt I had whiplash from what was happening. I wish the pacing was the way it was somewhere in the 70% mark.

But overall, I really liked this book. It’s something I know I won’t easily forget. It’s a story of love, forgiveness, humanity, and not giving up. As some of the other reviewers said, if you decide to read the book, go into it with an open mind. It pleasantly surprised me, and I’m so happy I read this!

This story was heartbreakingly beautiful. My heart is still hurting over it and that ending definitely didn't help matters!!

Evelyn was a good girl turned good woman. She was just a really good person. She had a job she hated in the field that she loved. She had a supportive father and a mom who pushed her to excel. She had a best friend that has always been there for her, but secretly harbours jealousy in her heart and takes Evey for granted. She had very little luck when it came to dating (a lot of frogs). Oh and she had an incredibly delicious guardian angel. yes, that's right, an angel. Who happens to be stupidly in love with her. And then she falls in love with him. What they share goes against all of the rules Lucian has lived by for 2000 years! Will true love prevail? Read the book to find out ;)

Fave parts: the banter, the angels, the way the angels walked in our world, and the obvious effort the author made to create this story.

“When you feel pain, Evey, so do I.”
I thought it must work exactly the same way for me.
“Please don’t hurt for me,” he said softly.

After another date gone wrong Evey runs into a very handsome guy who is more than drunk. She takes pity on him and takes him home so that he can sleep off his inebriation. When he tells her that he is an angel, in fact, HER guardian angel, Evey realizes the guy isn't just drunk, there is something really wrong with him. Unfortunately he is also insanely hot and when he tells her things he can't possibly know she starts believing him.

“This is fun, Lucian. You have quite the imagination. My life is complete now. I’ve met an angel who sits in bars, binge drinking and playing stupid songs on the jukebox.”
I chuckled.
“I was bored. This is the second-most boring job in the universe, especially since I started following your ass around.”

Lucian has been a guardian angel for more than two thousand years. Never before has he felt a connection to anyone like he does with Evey. When he realizes that he can't hold in his feelings for her any longer it's either being reassigned to another charge or breaking every cosmic law there is. Guess what he goes for. But there are laws made by God and crossing them has serious consequences.

I loved Lucian. He was such a wonderful combination of cocky, snarky and sweet and affectionate.

“So am I your only one?”
“You mean pain in the ass? Yeah, you’re the only one. They’ve been giving me a light caseload lately.”

He struggled with the effects of his decision to out himself and was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for Evey. His love had no price tag, he just loved this girl for who she was.

Evey was a strong heroine, she had some snark and was sweet most of the times but also had a bit of a bitch about her which I tried to explain with her being afraid. Yet, that didn't always work and I had to admit that she sometimes just was a bit hurtful with this amazing man, who put her on a pedestal and gave her pure and unconditional love.

He went up on his knees, leaving my body so he could sit back on his heels. I was waiting, open to him as he stared down at me.
“You are the sexiest thing. I can’t get enough of you,” he said, his voice thoughtful and soft.

I realize that this book might not be for everyone. On one side you have the religious aspect. Admittedly, I'm not a very religious person but I'm a spiritual creature and I do believe, despite (or maybe because of) my science background, that there is a higher power. On the other hand you have those who might think that this book is sacrilegious. All I can say is that if you think you might enjoy this, go into it with an open mind and let it surprise you. This story is about having faith that things will work out in the end. It's about two souls that are destined to be united.

Saftey:

I looked up from the magazine quickly, realizing I couldn’t take my eyes off of her for more than a second. I didn’t want her to leave. I was having eight thousand feelings all at once.

We are in San Francisco with 24 year old Evey.
She's working as a fashion designer for a boss she can't stand.
She dates guys only once because she just knows it won't go anywhere.
But she wants more for her life!

To top off her already less than amazing life, her guardian angel is witnessing all of this AND he is constantly drunk!
And also in love with her.

He's obviously not allowed to love one of his souls, but he can't help himself.
He might also be responsible for Evey's relationships not working out...

What will happen with an almost fallen angel and a girl who lost almost all faith in her happily ever after....

READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT ☺

═════════════════════════════════

description

First of all....this book has two of my reading hard-limits in it.
First the paranormal aspect. I don't read those books much. A sexy vampire here and there, but only once a year or so. The second hard-limit is RELIGION. I'm such an ANTI-EVERYTHING-RELIGIOUS person. I don't even know why I chose a book about an angel and faith and whatnot! But the blurb sounded cute and fun and it was Renée Carlino ... I just had to read it.☺

And I read it.

I kind of liked the drunk Lucian. But he was so much like all the angels you always see on TV. I always saw Nicholas Cage in my head, and that is not something I want to have in my head. Ewww.
Lucian is beautiful - and not the way Meg Ryan claims Nicholas Cage is beautiful in the movie - I almost barfed sitting in the theater when she said that btw.! ☺

Lucian has longish black hair and the most beautiful light blue eyes!
And of course we immediately want him to end up happily ever after with Evelyn.
But it's just not possible without one of them dying or whatever the rules here are....

I really liked the book, but, especially the beginning, was way too rushed. They meet. He tells her the angel thing, she believes him, they move in together. Bam, the end of their courtship. It was way too fast a start for me.

I wish the beginning would've been a bit more like the last third of the book, with lots of action and feelings and tears and interesting stuff. I almost stopped reading a couple of times in the first half of the book, because it just didn't grab me. It was just too weird and too rushed and ridiculous.

But the last 30% made up for the weird beginning.

In the end I really enjoyed reading the book, it just wasn't my kind of thing.

I had lots of problems with it. But I also loved many parts of it. There were some very funny and adorable and sad and moving moments. ♥

Please don't let me scare you away! You will probably fall completely in love with this book! I'm just weird with lots of things. ☺☺☺

LUCIAN DIVINE was a really sweet and moving I'm-in-love-with-my-guardian-angel romance!! Run to your nearest amazon for your own sexy angel!!!!

It pains me very much, but Lucian Divine was not the book for me. I love paranormal romance, I love angels, and I love Renee Carlino. But this time it just didn't work. Despite the hero knowing the heroine her whole life, it was too instalove for me, at least on the heroine's end. I wish we could have seen the process of Lucian falling in love with his charge, I feel I would have connected with this book a lot more than I did. There's more but I don't want to get into it. I was able to read the book all the way through instead of quitting, and I love Carlino's writing style. It really just isn't the book for me.

Others loved this book a lot and wrote wonderful reviews, so if you are on the fence I encourage you to go and read their reviews.

Lucian is a gorgeous guardian angel whose job is to protect a beautiful 24 yr. old woman who lives in San Francisco named Evelyn Casey. Evey is kind and Lucian has always felt this pull towards her. He wants her to be happy, but over time he's found himself wanting to be the one to make her laugh & the one to warm her bed at night. Guardians aren't allowed to reveal themselves to the souls they watch over, & definitely can't fall in love with them. Lucian's personal hell has been having to endure watching Evey date guy after guy. He's insanely jealous. He's already on probation for breaking the rules, but decides to reveal himself to Evey and confess he's her guardian angel.

Evey meets this handsome drunk in a bar one night who acts as if they know each other. He then tells her he's her guardian angel. She goes from thinking this sexy stranger with the heart stopping eyes & smile is the most intoxicating, stunning man she's ever laid eyes on, to thinking he's absolutely crazy! Evey soon learns Lucian is exactly who he claims to be & now has an explanation for this intense connection she feels when they're together. From the moment he touches her it feels magical & right. Nothing compares to the way he makes her feel.

 photo 52FBC2A7-874A-4BBE-BF3A-3C5915382109_zpsfnvfkspo.jpg

-Everything about him was intoxicating.

-He watched me with an intensity I had never seen in a person.

-I wanted to feel her so badly.

-Every cell in my body ached for her.

-"We were made for each other, Evey. I believe that."

 photo 1671D1D8-C0C6-43E9-B640-80987C52C287_zpsatp5qltv.jpg

Lucian & Evey are together & very In love. Lucian makes Evey feel safe & loved, and she wants a future with him, but are there consequences for breaking the cosmic laws of the universe? Will Lucian get a happily ever after or will he be banished or reassigned for his actions.

I really enjoyed this book! It was my first by this author & I can't wait to read more of her books. This was a funny, sexy read & I fell hard for this delicious bad boy angel with a heart of gold.

 photo 73AC5F21-1FE6-401B-9BAC-8CB0060343CE_zpszosibljf.gif

-I've loved you forever.

-"I have never felt love for any human the way I feel it for you. You are literally the air in my lungs."

-I didn't know anymore where I ended and he began. We were lost in each other.

-Nothing would ever feel as good as being loved by him.

-I was lost in his eyes, this being who had watched over me, protected me, taught me things, cared for me, comforted me, loved me.

3 Kind of Divine Stars

This is my second Renee Carlino book. The previous book I read, I gave it two stars. I didn’t even realized this was my second Renee Carlino book. I picked up this book because everyone loves this author and I love a good PNR book. I was hooked by the blurb.

I’ve read the reviews, there are the 3, 4 and 5 star reviews. I agree with all of the three star reviews. We share the same issues and likes.

First off, the idea of the book is smashing. I thought it was romantic, even the cover pulls you in. The first 30% of the book was a five star read for me. I really liked the way the characters were getting set-up and the book just clicked with me.

The reminder of the book is where everything kind of fell flat for me.

I should put the disclaimer out there that I like a slow PNR read. I guess I’m use to reading YA PNR and so my NA PNR is kind of lacking. I don’t really mind if there isn’t any steam. I kind of like the angst of the two characters trying to hook up.

The thing that really miss the mark for me was the pace and how suddenly it changed. Lucian is an angel and he has been in love with Evey her whole life. I REALLY liked that and found it cute, but what I didn’t like was that all of sudden Evey was in love with Lucian.

Then, a LOT happens in the book and I’ll steal this from another reviewer because it felt like I got whiplashed. I kind of wanted all of these events to happen between two – three books. It kind of felt like there was no planning in the writing and the writer was just writing whatever she felt that day.

I’m not trying to bash on the author because a lot of people love her, I guess I just keep on trying to figure out what everyone is talking about. A lot of times I wanted to not finish the book because I started to lose the connection with the characters, but I just had to know. I had to feel what everyone was feeling.

Even though two of the books I read by this author wasn’t a major hit for me, I’ll still read her books. I know it’s just a matter of getting the right one in my hands.

As much as I like Renee Carlino, this just wasn't for me. I think the comedy was lost on me, or maybe I wasn't in the right mood. Also, Lucian isn't meant to be endearing initially, but his repeated insults of Evey seem unnecessary and her reactions are unrealistic.
"I'm not gonna sit here and spew facts about every stage of your colorless, insipid, shallow life that I had to so painfully watch."
Anyway, I still look forward to reading more books by Renee.

Renee Carlino is synonymous with romance with heart and in her latest novel, she puts a fun spin on love, hope and sacrifices. Lucian Divine was one of those romance story that had sprinklings of paranormal undertones but mostly I think of this book as an epic love story.

If you read the synopsis, then you can get an idea of what to expect so I will not rehash and spoil anything for the readers because the best part of this book is getting lost in Carlino’s prose, characters and the raw emotions seeping through the pages. Honestly when I think of guardian angels, I imagine just an ordinary person nothing really special but in the case of this book, Renee Carlino did an amazing job luring readers to fall for Lucian as he struggles with his emotions and feelings for Evelyn. So what happens when an angel falls for a human?

“You are everything to me. You’re the dream, the air, the reason, the cause for my whole existence. If I die today right in front of you, it won’t be because I gave up. I’ll never give up. There is no God that can keep me from you. I’d die ten thousand times for you.”

The chemistry. The pull. The excitement. The anticipation. Everything was done in such a beautiful heartfelt manner that I couldn’t help but devour this book in one sitting. The characters were flawlessly incorporated into the story showcasing their depth, vulnerability and emotional struggle. So if you are looking for a story where the writing was full of heart and passion, then I urge you to get lost in a romance where beauty, sacrifice, and love was shown in a visceral manner then Lucian Divine is the book for you.

Every once in a while, I need a change in what I am reading to reset myself so that I am not reading the same things over and over again. Lucian Divine came at the right time for me because I was in a bit of a book slump. This is a very different book for Renee Carlino - in such a good way!!

Now I will admit that I am a huge believer in God, in Guardian Angels, in Heaven and in my mind, I love the thoughts of the afterlife and where I will go one day to be reunited with the ones I love who have passed on.

Ms. Carlino takes a leap of faith and tells the tale of the unknown - a look into Evelyn Casey's life and the Guardian Angel that watches over her - Lucian.

I think everyone wants to believe in a higher power watching over us, protecting us and I loved this look into Evelyn and Lucian's journey. Ms. Carlino pulls all the stops and gives us not only something emotional that will touch your heart and soul, but will also give readers something to think about long after reading the very last page. This book is indeed divine and was so much fun to read!

Full review to come closer to release date - I LOVED this book!

UPDATE!!!

A love so deep, so strong, one that will melt your heart and have you devouring word after word. Lucian Divine consumed me and I have to say that I am in awe of Renee Carlino's talent and her ability to create a tale that brings this story and these characters to life.

It's important to add that although the synopsis had a paranormal tone, Lucian Divine is more of an incredible, epic love story.

Evelyn Casey is a clothing designer, working for a woman she can't stand, but sticks with it for the money and the experience. She dates casually, but tries to follow her best friend's rules and doesn't get too attached.

Lucian Divine is by far one of the hottest, most mysterious heroes I've ever met. When he and Evey meet, sparks fly. Who knew a guardian angel could be an alcoholic who breaks all the rules? Yes, Evey's guardian angel is a drunk, a beautiful drunk, with mesmerizing blue eyes and a heart of gold.

The banter between Lucian and Evey is hilarious, There's a sprinkle of magic, faith, love, and trust throughout the story. The pair fall in love and try to defy the odds.

But what are the consequences? Can Lucian and Evey have what they both want so desperately? Can they make it work?
"Evey, next time, in the next life we'll be together—that's how this will be corrected. This will be righted. This can't be our forever fate. Next time we'll live together, we'll die together..."

This book will have you laughing, in tears and devouring the pages. Not only can Renee deliver one hell of a love story, she has a wicked sense of humor that shined through the entire book. I loved Lucian Divine and have added it to my top favorites of 2016.
"You are everything to me. You're the dream, the air, the reason, the cause for my whole existence..."

This book.

I love everything about it.

The love, the laughter, the writing, the story, the characters. Renee Carlino is one of my most favorite authors, so I couldn't wait to dive in.

She did not disappoint. So different from anything I've ever read. I also need to add that although it has a "paranormal tone" in the synopsis, it isn't. It's an incredible love story that strengthens your beliefs in love, life and faith.

Full review to come on the blog, but you definitely want to add Lucian Divine to your TBR!!! Loved it!!!

5 Stars!!!

“This book is about faith, love, the unknown, and not taking ourselves so damn seriously all the time.”

This book came to me at the perfect time. I’ve was feeling a little out touch with people, and truth be told, I’ve been a little despondent. So when this little gem landed in my kindle, it lit up my day. I trust Renee to give me a story that always lifts my spirits and this book did exactly that. This book is unique. It’s got a little bit of religion, spiritual elements, love, humor, faith, and fantasy…so basically it’s a beautiful book that inspires hope. Something I need these days.

So we have Evelyn Casey who is living her life, doing all the things a twenty something year old does. Then one day she meets a mysterious yet captivating man who reveals he’s her guardian angel. He’s totally ridiculous, he’s a drunk, and he’s in love with her. Evey doesn’t stand a chance to this gorgeous, angelic drunkard. Evey and Lucian break the rules for love, but there are consequences to their actions. Can Lucian and Evelyn defy God and the plan that was set out for them?
This story really goes on the limb by incorporating many concepts about God, faith, heaven, angels, and what happens when we die. I found it quite hilarious and satirical, but overall, it gave me a feeling of hope about the unknown. Do we have guardian angels? Do we become angels when we die? Are there such things as soul mates?

“I’m not human. I don’t sleep—I can’t. I wish I could because you bore me to tears and I have to watch over you.”

First off, I loved Lucian. He has this sarcastic humor that I just got. He’s probably the worst Angel I have ever read…quite terrible at his job and has an alcohol addiction. He obviously needs more to his Angel life. I loved him and I loved how inherently good he is…well, he’s an angel so I suppose I should expect nothing less. But his character really was very human. Although an angel, he was very flawed, but also full of kindness and love. The depth to which he loves Evey is beyond words. It’s all consuming and very palpable. SWOON.

I would describe the love between Lucian and Evey a contemporary romance with some magic and faith. Both Evey and Lucian jump in feet first and never look back. They are devoted to each other and so sure of their love that they risk it all. The story has a good amount dedicated to portraying their everyday life, how they are a normal couple. Their relationship was ordinary with ups and downs, but their love was extraordinary; it was real and deep.

“When we lie, there are consequences here on Earth with the humans we love.”

I was on edge at about 50% of the book. I knew there would be consequences to their defiance, but I was scared and I wanted God to just forgive. No spoiler, but let’s just say in the end, I feel hopeful that God does value love above all else and that our greatest gifts is our ability to love.
Overall, this book delivers on so many levels. It questions but also reaffirms faiths. It makes you love harder and sends a hopeful message. It’ll make you laugh and think about how silly life can be and how hard it can be. I think this is a must read! Happy reading!

4 "Faith & True Love" Stars!

A truly unique read. Although this story does have an undercurrent of religion and paranormal elements, it is not a traditional paranormal or Christian romance by any means, and therefore can be equally enjoyed by both PNR/Christian romance lovers and non-PNR or Christian romance enthusiasts alike.

Evelyn Casey's love life and career leave a lot to be desired. Stuck in a job designing denim fashion designs for a boss who lacks imagination, and having failed to meet anyone even remotely close to Mr. Right by her mid-twenties, she's not sure where her life is headed--that is until she quite literally bumps into her guardian angel (Lucian).

She's not supposed to remember him, even though Lucian has been there from her day 1 (in fact he's been around for a long time before that, at least a couple thousand years). Yet, in all those years, Lucian has never met someone who makes him feel like Evie. He is convinced it is true love--a feeling she clearly shares from the forbidden moments they have stolen together (even though she has seen his flaws--yes, even angels have their demons)--but does such a thing as true love really exist? Moreover, any interactions that are not immediately erased from the human's memory are clearly forbidden between a guardian angel and any human. So could an angel ever have a real relationship with a human?

All in all, what I enjoyed the most about Lucian Divine was that the plot requires the reader to contemplate certain existential questions, such as:
What is faith?
Is there such a thing as fate?
Is there such a thing as luck or karma?
Do bad things happen as a form of cosmic retribution for failing to follow the rules?
Does true love exist?
The depths that the two main characters will go to for their love is truly inspirational. If you're looking for something fresh that pushes you to consider some concepts outside of the traditional romance world but still is layered into the familiar romantic landscape, then Lucian Divine may just be the next book you're looking for.

Renee Carlino delivers something incredibly refreshing in her latest release, Lucian Divine.

Evey Casey is in her mid twenties and growing tired of the dating scene. The constant hopping from one double date to another with her relationship hating best friend, Brooklyn.
Until one night, after another failed attempt at dating, she meets Lucian. Lucian is a gorgeous drunk who is over watching Evey meet guy after guy and having to intervene. Why's that? Well, Lucian is an angel. Not just any angel. He's Evey's guardian angel.

Sarcastic, drunk, sweet and utterly devoted to Evey in ways she'll soon learn about, Lucian is a unique, yet easy character to fall in love with. He had me in tears, the very best kind, from laughing so much. Evey was a kind hearted, easy to relate to, character. Her initial reaction to Lucian telling her what he was was amazing and simply hilarious.

Even though this book had me laughing out loud more times than I can count, there is so much more to it. So much beauty, heartache, wonder and love. With faith being the recurring theme intertwined throughout, Lucian and Evey's story had me holding my breath in hopes of seeing them get their happy ever after, which seemed to be growing further out of reach with every page turned.

“I started to think maybe heaven was on Earth. Maybe being an angel was like being in hell.”

While this book reads wonderfully for lovers of contemporary romance and Renee's other books, it also reads as a paranormal romance for me. Now, anyone who knows me will know that I'm a huge fan of paranormal reads. This genre is where my love for reading took hold and never let go. Lucian Divine takes place in our world, with the romance including a human and her guardian angel. A majestic, beautiful man with wings, a bunch of guardian angel friends and colleagues. So although his character seems so very human at times, it was clearly evident that he was not. If paranormal isn't your jam, I highly urge you to give this book a chance anyway.

Renee's writing never ceases to amaze. Eloquent and fluent with gripping dialogue that will absorb you into any world she creates. Fast paced, romantic, thought provoking and intensely touching, Lucian Divine is a story that's bound to capture many readers hearts.

“This book is about faith, love, the unknown, and not taking ourselves so damn seriously all the time.”

If anybody's listening out there, can somebody please, please get me my own version of Lucian as a guardian angel? This book, most especially Lucian, was indeed the ultimate epitome of DIVINE. I wasn't able to put it down once I started. It gutted me. It gave me the chills. It gave me butterflies in my stomach. It made my heart sing. It even brought tears to my eyes. But most of all, it made me feel that if only you have faith that's strong enough, if you never give up on God and His plans, anything really is possible. I know this book is just a fantasy, but it truly reminded me of how much having faith and being optimistic is important.

I won't get into the story here. I don't want to give anything away and ruin it all. You'll have to read it to experience it. Just know that Lucian is Evelyn Casey's guardian angel. He was assigned to protect her soul the moment she was born. She wasn't meant to see him. He wasn't meant to fall in love with her. But it happened. And their love just defied all the odds.

Some people might find this book on warp speed because it seriously just hits the ground running, getting into the core of Lucian and Evelyn's story immediately. But to me, it was actually perfect. It was the message, the things they went through together that really got to me. I'm not even sure if it has anything to do with religion, but I felt such a strong connection with this tale. Lucian and Evey's love for each other was out of this world; it was so powerful and unrelenting. Their bond was unbreakable and infinite. I loved every single moment of it, even those parts where I just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry my eyes out.

Just like any other novel written by Renee Carlino, Lucian Divine was no different in giving me a lasting impression, the goosebumps and all the feels. Regardless if this was a paranormal romance—which, by the way, I'm so damn glad Carlino took the chance to venture and publish—it still gave me that blissful rush I always crave for in a phenomenal book. I still experienced that hard pull and squeeze in my chest, that powerful tug at my heartstrings, that I only feel whenever I read a book penned by this particular author. Her characters once again took me in a journey that was just utterly beautiful, eye-opening and absolutely surreal. I definitely wouldn't mind reading another paranormal romance written by her.

Renee Carlino is an amazing writer. That is a fact.
She is creative, never disappoints and her books are usually in my top three reads of the year.
I never miss an opportunity to read anything written by her, so when I received my ARC, I literally left everything and started reading.
I usually don't like paranormal romance but I gave it ago any way, just because it's Renee's book.
And let me tell you, this book does have a paranormal aspect to it, but it is not your typical dystopian/paranormal read.

So, this time Renee went with something completely different. It was a breath of fresh air. Unique. Different. You can't find books like this one every day.
I can tell you right away that this is not my favourite Renee Carlino book, but it was refreshing and it surprised me big time. I mean, you can't miss a chance to read about a gorgeous guardian angel with black hair and blue eyes! He is mysterious, hot and guess what? He falls in love with girl he is supposed to keep an eye on.
I will not tell you what this book is mainly about, because there are are hundreds of reviews below, but I will say that I really enjoyed this one. It was a mix of funny, emotional, sad and in the end hopeful. Basically, a beautiful love story you don't want to miss out on.

I don't know why, but i found this story really heartwarming :)

First of all, that cover is just everything.
Second, Renee Carlino is one of my favorite authors.
Third, this was just so intriguing.

It's been such a long time since I read a paranormal romance (if this is considered one), ever since Twilight i think. It was kind of hard to visualize this angel yknow, like this drunk, sorrowful and broken angel. Yet, somehow when you read his POV's, you can see that he has loved this girl (his soul he was assigned to) for so long. This took on a very interesting approach on guardian angels and dare i say religion. :)

I really love the idea that a guardian angel fell in love with a human that he was supposed to guard. It's like a forbidden fairytale matched made in heaven. It was absolutely heartbreaking and also, beautiful.

I believe in everything that happened in this book,
Love has no bounds
Love doesn't choose
Love happens
and
Love always get second chances...<3

I absolutely loved this book :) I postponed my gaming needs just to finish this lol XD

I had this ridiculous moment when i was reading though...i know this was a work of fiction but reading that we have guardian angels watching over us made me believe because I believe those things.
There was a point when i was reading and i shouted "Hello?" XD XD

Yup, I'm dumb! But! I'll still be open minded :)

I ADORE Renee Carlino and I think that all of her other books are beautifully written. 'Not in This Life' is one my top favorite books! 'Lucian Divine' did not have the depth that I expect from this writer's work. There was plenty of "tell" but not enough show. This lack of detail led to me not really feeling the bond between the main characters.

Without spoiling the plot, there are just too many open questions in this book. The ending felt rushed. There are elements of romance, sex and even humor here, but I never "felt" the love between Evey and Lucian. I like that the author wrote a story that is certainly different and unexpected. Some readers may enjoy this type of book, but it was just not for me. I loved the Epilogue and the ending for these characters was perfect. Definitely try this one and judge for yourself!

"Angels can be obnoxiously self-righteous.”

We love our ‘Angel’ books….LOVE them! So, we started Lucian Divine with excitement and a girly giddiness. We immediately fell in love with the humour, the writing and the characters. But then again, we love Renee Carlino’s work, always have done. Whilst we didn’t find it particularly unique we fell in love with everything it stood for and the quirkiness of it. Who doesn’t love a cheeky bad boy Angel who loses his heart to the one he’s meant to watch over?!

‘I’m on the other side of life, Evey, existing where death belongs and yearning to be with you. Yearning in brief moments to bring you here, into the darkness. When my thoughts are so painfully selfish, I cannot breathe you in at all. I cannot love you when I hate myself. Don’t say my name. Don’t think about me. Don’t imagine how we can be together.’

Lucian, our guardian Angel is not only super swoony, he’s funny, caring and a ‘man’ with a big heart. He loves and loves hard to the point of no return. He looks controversy and rules straight in the eye and shows it his middle finger, because he wants and craves Evey. The connection was strong and believable and we swooned alongside our beautiful and sweet heroine who’s had a run of bad luck in boyfriends….until her Angel.

“You do not get to leave me, Lucien.”

“We were made for each other, Evey. I believe that.”

‘It never felt wrong to me.’

Halfway through we started wondering where this story was going as it felt as if it had almost lost its momentum, despite us loving the beginning, but let us tell you it suddenly completely pulled the rug from under our feet. We have to admit we found it a tad slow and stilted in the middle until it became very fast paced and changed in atmosphere entirely. Partly, this caused us to feel like this was two separate books as one half had such a different feel in comparison to the other. Yet we were once again utterly riveted and spellbound. We had tears threatening and we began to pray that love would conquer all, no matter what. We felt it, we believed in it and wow did we need to see Lucian and Evey get their much deserved happiness. How it all came to be in the latter part completely turned everything around and we ended up undeniably loving it once again.

“Did I not make it clear? I’m in love with her. The crazy kind of love that you and I have seen over and over…in them, not us. It’s the rip-your-bleeding-heart-out-and-step-in-front-of-a-speeding-train kind of love.”

Release Date: January 9, 2017
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Lucian Divine is one of the most unique romances that I have read in a long time. Renee Carlino mixes the paranormal with an epic tale of soulmates that will leave you not only shedding tears but believing that everything that this book depicts is real. Normally, I try and stay away from books where religion plays a big part in the storyline; this one for instance mentions god, the afterlife, and guardian angels, but is don’t subtly in this novel so I had no problem reading it. The biggest aspect of religion here really is the fact that our hero is a guardian angel. And in all honesty? It works. With that being said, if you’re looking to preorder any book in 2017, this is it.

Overall, this is well written and impressive novel that takes paranormal to a whole new level. The author uses her imagination and sparks a whole lot of interest in the tale of a guardian angel and the woman he falls in love with. I have personally never read a book like this before which made it more special to me as a reader. It gets very tiresome to read the same plot line over and over again, and because this book is so different it’s like a breath of fresh air. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely.

Another DNF for this book - I've noticed quite a few and i agree with those reviews.

It's started off badly and i picked holes in it straight away, i'm not usually one for over-criticizing a book but i started scrunching my nose up at the characters and the way the start unfolds. For eg,

✤ Heroine believes her date went badly because she may have had lettuce in her teeth. Errrr. ✤ Heroine's bestie is a slut, vapid, vein; If that's her best friend, then it totally makes me question her. ✤ Hero apparently is in love with heroine from the start yet propositions someone else. He doesn't act like a thousand's of years old being, he acts like a child. ✤ Then there was the whole revelation that he's an Angel; It was rushed, anti-climatic, explained like a textbook. ✤ Within five minutes of meeting the heroine he tells her that he does have a penis and able to fornicate with the other Angels when they get their daily break.

Not for me, with a start like that it left me criticizing every thing that happened thereafter with a sour taste in my mouth.
