For most women, being newly engaged to the love of your life is a time of celebration. But Sunaya’s happiness is overshadowed by loss. Her friends have not returned from their quest to bring back Noria, and though the Resistance has been beaten back, they are far from vanquished.
When the Minister sends Sunaya and Iannis to destroy an important Resistance stronghold, Sunaya is torn between the desire to help her friends and defend her country. But soon she finds that the two are not as unrelated as she imagined . . . and in order to accomplish both, she must put her trust in a man who has betrayed her.
This one was paced a bit differently and felt a bit short. The Resistance climax happened comparatively early in the story and the rest of the story was more about the MC learning about her previously unknown familial history, her relationship with her friends, and her romantic relationship. It included some adult times, as well.
I didn't care for the next-book non-cliff hanger at the end of the book. These things always feel manipulative to me. It was well enough done, however, that I didn't feel like I was getting hammered to buy the next book.
Sunaya and Iannis are engaged...and as Sunaya learns it's to be a yearlong engagement, according to mage ritual. This leads her back to thinking of her Mage father. He could possibly stand in the way of their marriage. Sunaya decides to find out the truth, enlisting her librarian friend. Meanwhile, Iannis and Sunaya are sent on a mission by the Minister to destroy a Resistance compound. Just before leaving she learns her friends are there. Will she be able to save them in time or will they be killed in the destruction? This book is filled with many twists and turns. It's both thrilling and emotionally charged. I highly recommend the entire series. 5 stars!
I’m a huge fan of Sunaya Baine and the other characters in The Baine Chronicles and was excited to read Betrayed by Magic. Book 4 in the series ended on a high note and I expected this to pick up where we left off. In some ways my expectations were met – – but in others I found this book to be disappointing.
The best way to explain my reaction is to compare this series to Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time. TWOT was well-paced through the first books in the series, and then in the middle Jordan was bogged down with minutiae used to develop characters who were already developed. The books were big on personality and light on events designed to push the characters into new directions. Jordan’s death freed the characters from being mired in themselves and allowed the story trajectory to advance, but many agree that skipping the middle books in the series does not eliminate a reader’s ability to understand what is happening at the beginning and end. Betrayed by Magic appeared to suffer a similar fate to TWOT. The full plot can be summarized in 2 sentences and the character development felt like it was repeating information that I as a reader already knew.
Despite my lackluster response to this installment in the series, I do find The Baine Chronicles as a whole to be outstanding and look forward to future installments. It is my hope that the dramatic tension will reappear in the next book of the series.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Every time I pick this book back up I get frustrated with how compliment this supposedly hard-as-nails, live-on-the-streets enforcer is. She is constantly making absolutely dumb choices that should have gotten her killed and only by being pulled out of the fire continuously by men who are mysteriously attracted to her can she keep going. I just don't believe she could have lived to adulthood in this world with such poor decision making skills.
I cannot finish it. Maybe I'll go back if I run out of other books to read.
Sunaya grows in leaps and bounds in this book and her the identity of her father is revealed. Really exciting stuff. Loved it. I am so looking forward to Book 6. Keep up the great work Jasmine!
I put this one down and picked it up a couple times. It ended up taking me several months to get through it. It just moved so slow. Nothing big happened. Just more of Sunna being a self centered brat and doing exactly what she wants no matter who might get hurt in the process. It happens so often that my anger about is has wore down to do I really care anymore attitude. At this point, I'm not even sure I want to finish the series. Her and Innis had one passionate encounter in a shower. If not for that, I would have been completely turned off to their relationship, which until then was coming across as pretty cold and distant. Like an old married couple that have lost their spark. With that and the lack of action and the bratty MC, I'm losing interest quickly.
Great character development and world building. Sunaya matures more in this book, and she mends her relationship with her cousin Rylan. There is character development for minor characters such as Noria too.
Summary: Great character development Kickass heroine Good plot More world building Great romance between Sunaya and Iannis
Another great adventure! Jam packed with action, suspense and of course so sweet romance! I absolutely love this series and the characters themselves. I enjoy the twists and turns throughout the book I never knew what was going to happen next. I can’t wait to discover more.
Jasmine Walt has written another wonderful book for her series, The Baine Chronicles. Suniya is a half shifter, half mage that has the love of the head mage. This series is about how she isn't supposed to exist and how she not only survives but thrives with the help of her friends and the love of her mage. Excellent adventures, friendships, and a smart savvy heroine make for enjoyable reads!
This is the fifth novel in this amazing urban fantasy series. The novel is very well written and developed. The story flows through flawlessly from the book to book. The world building descriptions are well defined & detailed. This book will keep you captivated from the start & will keep you wanting more. If you haven't started this series you really should give it a try as it is amazing and you will not be disappointed. It is my favourite urban fantasy series.
Loved this addition to the story, and the way it is developing is very interesting and fun. I like ti that the heroine is learning to act differently s well as think differently. There is a nice blend between action and description, getting from one place to another and what happens when you get there. This is a great series and I love following it.
Have sat through the most of this series within a couple of days. The story just hooks you and you want to find out what's going to happen next! It's been absolutely fantastic following Naya's journey from a struggling enforcer all alone in the world to being engaged to the most powerful man in the state. Can't wait to see what they will do next
This never ends! Ok but this was more fun. The mission here was disconcerting to say the least. I just feel like the author could've built the characters' relationships a bit more. Feels like everything happens too fast and there's no depth.
Plenty of action, battles, deception, and an engagement. Sunaya helps track down a rebel camp & free prisoners while also tackling her new role by Iannis's side and her heritage. The story is well developed and provides a lot of entertaining scenes.
[Note: Yesterday, I read [author:Pierce Brown|6474348]'s Morning Star. In this review are some comparisons and my general thoughts on both novels.]
Following Morning Star, I've been brought back to Earth (haha) with a simpler—and conspicuously shorter—novel. (That's interesting, because Jasmine Walt's entire Burned by Magic series is clearly NA, whereas Pierce Brown's remains well within the realm of YA.)
Not as much time, comparatively, has passed since I read the last novel in the series Marked by Magic—just under half a year ago). In a world of supernaturals, I'd forgotten how easy it is to declare magic, and its users, all-powerful and limitless. Even with repeated mention of a need for food as fuel, or tiredness as a result of magic over-use, Sunaya and Iannis remain extraordinarily and unforgettably super-human. Sunaya, in particular, is reduced nearly to the simple trope of the stubborn female, whose loyalty to her friends overshadows all sense of danger; meanwhile, Iannis is so love-struck that he is willing to publicly flaunt convention and exchange insults, despite the political nature of his career. None of these traits are irredeemable flaws, but they make a strong dent in what could otherwise be an empowering novel following in the line of Wonder Woman. At the very least, I suppose I've returned to the series a tad more skeptical than accepting. (To eek out a comparison to Pierce Brown's series Red Rising, which deals strictly with a male lead in a militaristic society, female antagonists are certainly as competent and calculating as their male counterparts.)
The characterization of our protagonist is grating, and simply not believable.
There are few twists and turns throughout the novel. Even the ending—another subplot easily spotted—is without surprise. The personal intrigue, though, may be well worth the wait in the series's following installments.

I wasn’t some fucking princess; I was Sunaya Baine. Half-shifter, half-mage, all warrior.
‘Betrayed by Magic’ focuses on the search for her friends and infiltrating a resistance base with the help of Ryan who had previously betrayed her. The climax is very early on and the book me absolutely AGES to finish. I thought I might actually have to still be reading it on my death bed.
The plot has lost a lot of its driving factor now that the main love interest is paired and I like that there's no conflict in their relationship but it does feel as though its on a bit of a standstill. They don’t seem to get any closer and Iannis seems a bit above it all.
Especially after the last book saw Sunaya really develop (and of course her and Iannis’s relationship develop) I’m disappointed in this one, I think I might have to come back to this series in a while.
Darker and deeper plot. In this one, Sunaya is starting to discover that the power of mages is far greater than humans and shifters ever imagined. Ties and friendships are strained while new ones are uncovered and not all of them apperas to be friendly. In the ending Sunaya understands that her hidden roots and choices may be part of what shapped her in what she is now and she turns an apprehensive look toward the futur. I'm already turning the page to see what's coming.
Jasmine has me hooked. I didn’t not realize just how many books where in this series. I started reading book 5 and realized there are at least 11. I’m halfway through and I love ever single book! Well to be honest it struggled a bit with the first 2. I just wanted things to speed up but now I want them to slow down. I want to finish the series but will be so sad when that happens! I hope there are spin offs of fernis, Annia, Noria or maybe even rylann!
Things keep moving for Sunaya and gang. The romance is alive and it's so fun to read about her and Iannis. She's a take no crap woman and that includes from women who think they are better than her. Iannis is a true man who sticks up for his lady when needed. Rescues are attempted and sentences handed down. A thrilling read!
To me the mark of a great book is one that sucks you in, makes you feel what the characters feel and this one does all that. Parts where I was worried, cried and yes even laughed out loud like a maniac while at work causing everyone to turn and look at me were all in this book. Very much worth your while to read.
I love Sunaya Baine. Make sure you read the books in order or you will be VERY confused. There is a 6th book to come, possibly more.
Chief Mage Iannis, Sunaya's fiancé is taking her on another trip just when she wants to go search for her missing friends.
Iannis is going to destroy a rebel base-- gone far beyond simply being rebellious -- they are developing diseases to kill off all Mages and all Shifters. This genocide would be so only humans would be left in the world.
Then, Sunaya finds out her missing friends are at the same place, at a base where testing of the disease bioweapons takes place--on children as well as adults.
Treason and genocide. The sentencing is sure to be harsh, and for some, deadly equal to their involvement.
I heart this book series. I continue writing reviews and seeing the main characters grow and evolve. This has been my favorite of the series. It would seem Sunaya is coming into her own, and it's a pleasure to see. Can't wait for the next!
I truly can't say enough good things about this series, and I consistently and eagerly am always looking forward to a new installment! Ms. Walt has created a fascinating and yet somehow familiar world, with interesting and well-developed characters.
This is a tremendous series. Jasmine Walt is a superb author. I've read two of her other series and they were great. The Baine series is the best of all of them. I've read most of them in one sitting! You really need to read this series.
