Aggravated Momentum

Rate this book
Deadly thriller, twisted plot, shocking, and dark conspiracy hardly scratch the surface to define Aggravated Momentum. Not everything is as it seems in what appears to be an average family. When danger lurks so close to home, skeletons emerge, and the darkest of secrets surface, causing twisted desires to become reality. Aggravated Momentum offers the perspective of some very diverse and unique characters, including fun, witty personalities to fall in love with, along with an intellectual killer to die for. You may be surprised as to whom exactly you can relate. Is it the cold, calculated murderer, who's name is yet to be revealed? Markie or Kam, the independent sisters, guilty of nothing more than getting tangled with the wrong people at the most inopportune times? Or, the cowardly snake curled in a hidden corner? Who are you, exactly? And, more importantly, who are they? The deeper you dig into the psyche of another, the more breath taking are the secrets you will find.

It’s been a while since I read a gory thriller, but when I picked up Aggravated Momentum by Didi Oviatt, I knew I would be thrust in the middle of something deliciously vicious. Did you see that cover? Blood, death and pain. And does this book deliver! Earlier this year I read another one of her thrillers, and while it was definitely an intense ride, this one was even more of a suspenseful punch… probably because we actually hear thoughts occurring in the serial killer’s head a few times. But perhaps my favorite part of this book was sharing it as a buddy read with my friend, Dani, an amazing book reviewer and blogger I love chatting with!

The book starts out a little scary… Markie, a young woman, is hurting over the vicious murder of her best friend from ~18 months earlier, trying to bond with her sister and find her new place in the world. She even goes on a blind date with a setup assembled by her late best friend’s parents who’ve come to think of her as their own daughter now. And it helps, given Markie’s own mother is a bit eccentric. Markie and her sister, Kam, setup a signal code so if the date is going poorly, Markie has an easy out. During the date, the signal goes off and Markie is disappointed, as she liked the guy. But when her sister calls with a fake emergency, it’s not actually fake. Thus, the chase kicks off in the books and we’re treated to a rotation of narrators from the killer, Markie, her family and a few other critical players.

Oviatt is fantastic at delivering the creepy, page-turning horror that pulls you in and kicks you out (from fear!) many times over. Whether it’s a description of the violence, the freakishly lucid yet nonsensical mind of a serial killer, or the palpitating fear readers witness when the main character is being stalked, it’s an intense journey. Casually dropping in the fear factor is a specialty of Oviatt, i.e. her reveal about how the killer is picking off his or her victims somewhere around 20% into the book. And you’re left thinking… yikes, how will anyone survive! But it’s when we learn the final twist that my eyes popped out of their sockets. Are you serious, Oviatt? I will NEVER be alone with you at this point… and I mean that in a you’re awesome, but you’ve got such bubbling creativity in that masterful mind of yours kinda way.

Characters are well drawn. I loved seeing the relationships between all the key players, but that ending! You’ve closed the loops on all the big things, but you’ve left quite a few open in the mid to small range that have us still wondering and thinking about this book. There’s gotta be a sequel in the works… it could still go so many ways. I hope you’ve got some sort of trickery up your sleeve as I want more on this wild adventure. One thing I’ve come to count on with Oviatt’s books is a strong story, crazy and deceitful characters, a massive twisty-turny road, and a realistic setting. It’s a methodical build where she ramps up at just the right pace, then the shock hits when you don’t expect it. But it makes you all the more focused and alert as you can’t help but squint and mistrust everyone at that point. So… how long do we have to wait for the next one?

What You Don't Know About Your Family May Kill You!

This story starts fast and twisty, and continues with surprises, one after another right until the end! We meet Markie, a woman still grieving her best friend who was murdered, and her carefree sister Kam. Kam is trying to get her sister to go out and have some fun, so Markie finally accepts a blind date. While she is actually enjoying herself, Kam calls in a panic begging her to come home. The young lady who lives in the house across from her is murdered, and the scene is so much like her best friend's, Beth. Then she notes the necklace...Is that Beth's, but it was on My mirror!!
What a suspenseful adventure you are drawn right into! I read from start to finish, hooked on the interesting lives of the characters, and waiting to jump at what happens Next! A psychological thriller that will Definitely take your mind off everything around you!!

Aggravated Momentum was probably one of the quickest, raciest reads for me in 2018. It started off with murderous excitement and the momentum not even once fizzled out.

Markie, a movie theatre manager, has already lost her best friend to a horrific murder when the killer strikes again, right across the street from her home. Needless to say, the detectives and news reporters are aplenty but that doesn’t mean anyone is safe from being the next victim.

Adding another layer of intrigue is Markie’s family- her sister with whom Markie has an interesting and a complex relationship; the mother who probably isn’t worthy of the title ‘mother’ at all… You just know that there’s more to this family than just a little bit of dysfunctional dynamics than what is normal.

Oviatt doesn’t waste time on trying to convince the reader of the authenticity of her characters; instead she skillfully shows their personalities through dialogue and by placing them into situations that more often than not revealed more than just their frayed nerves. This is the thing with Aggravated Momentum– the twists keep on coming and there are plenty of surprises to keep you turning the pages. Personally, I would never have guessed the directions the story went. Brilliant!

I also found Oviatt’s style rather refreshing- she doesn’t pussyfoot around the gory murder detail, nor does she keep her characters on the straight & narrow and politically correct. When a character insults another character- you’ll know it! And I liked that- I felt like the author really used the creative freedom here to create that weirdly seductive murder suspense.

The book started with a great prologue, a murder scene: a girl killed by her lover - this intrigued me, my heart rate jumped higher. I love a good whodunit, don't I?

The story then went on to tell us the lives of 2 sisters Markie and Kam. And soon people around Markie started dropping dead like flies to the point that she was scared to leave home. And soon the killer struck again closer to family...

My first book by Didi Oviatt, the initial 40% of the book had me adorn the role of the investigator and check out clues. I loved that. Didi's writing pulled me in. The sisters Markie and Kam seemed to share a close bond, though I never understood why Markie was so snarky about Kam's boyfriends and their looks, Markie herself was no raving beauty. But the trend of books is unlikable unreliable main characters... So I continued reading with my pulse spiking up.

At 40%, the killer was revealed and that crushed me. My heart flatlined... The book tried very hard to shock my heart to start beating and bring it back to the high interest level. But I am not the ideal reader who loves knowing the identity of the killer before the end.

The book continued with the first person POVs of the sisters, the mother, and the killer. Though their ways of thinking were shocking to say the least, each one more horrible than the other, my interest in the book didn't peak even after knowing the icky twist.

What an addicting ride! Oviatt knows how to deliver any genre of book, I swear! I couldn’t put this twisty page-turner down and I kept needing to know what was going to happen next! This one just may be in my top faves that I’ve read from the author so far!

Aggravated Momentum is the second book by Ms. Oviatt that I’ve read and enjoyed. The story is a dark, psychological thriller that begins with a gruesome murder scene in the shower, revealing insight into the killer’s modus operandi. At the story’s onset, we meet the main characters Markie and her sister Kam, while Markie dresses for a blind date she’s reluctant to attend. Before she truly gets to know Vincent, Markie receives a distressing call from Kam. Leaving the date early, she arrives at her neighborhood, swarming with police and ambulance activity to learn her sister’s murderer has claimed another victim, her friend. Now Markie, her family, and friends are the sadistic stalker’s targets.

"My life has been turned upside down. I’m totally invaded. I feel naked and vulnerable, like a bad dream. Everything personal is going to be laid out in the open for everyone to see."

While Markie collaborates with the police to unearth the killer, her family dynamics unfold. The insensitive mother who possesses a dire secret that could tear the family asunder. The murky relationship between their mother and estranged husband. And Markie and Kam’s close sisterly bond. But will their strong bond survive the looming threat? Ms. Oviatt tosses in another bit of madness with Markie’s dislike of her sister’s clingy boyfriend, Brock, and not to mention his total hatred of Markie. What a mess!

Aggravated Momentum is not a whodunit murder mystery. The author reveals the killer’s identity way before the killer wields another knife or mixes another poisonous drink. But can the author hold the reader’s attention after such a big reveal? Yes, she does. Ms. Oviatt captures the reader’s attention by cleverly thrusting one into the killer’s warped mind, revealing every evil, twisted thought, and reason for his madness. She adds a twist to the mix by defining the weak family dynamics, and a shocking, disgraceful, long-held family secret that allows evil to exist without remorse but with severe consequences. Ms. Oviatt’s story plays on the belief that the killer is always someone the victim knew, perhaps intimately.

Aggravated Momentum is a page-turner with a pace that’s never slow. The suspense keeps building and held my attention to the last horrific, explosive climax. If you’re looking for a book with murder, a warped antagonist, damaged protagonists, suspense, and thrills, then Aggravated Momentum is the perfect concoction of ingredients. Ms. Oviatt, thanks for the thrilling story!

Well, it’s probably in poor taste to call a book about a serial killer ‘great fun’, but it was! It’s quick, edgy and very twisty. Yes, I said twisty, as in there are many unexpected twists that made it a really fun read, and a good distraction during a rough patch in my personal life (Thanks Didi!).

Aggravated Momentum has all the goodies a thriller should have, and then some. Which in my opinion, separates the cookie-cutter types with the good ones. I highly recommend this one fellow readers, and tell your friends!

Short and sweet today!

Markie is still reeling over her best friend Beth’s death eighteen months prior. Beth was viciously murdered in her home and the perpetrator has never been caught. Little did Markie realize that the killer would strike again closer to home this time and would cause Markie to lose even more people that she loved. The killer has been stalking Markie for a long time and he is not done making her suffer. Will Markie and the police figure out who the killer is before he makes Markie his last and final victim?

I always love a good thriller that is reminiscent of the 80’s slasher horror movies - full of gore and psychopath hell bent on killing. So, judging this book by the cover alone had me extremely interested in reading what this book had to offer. The cover is so bloody and so mysterious all at the same time. The story starts out with a bang and never loses steam all the way through to the end. I found myself horrified yet secretly wanting more bloodshed and more horror. Gasps!

I would say they first half of the book was a remarkable thriller. It kept me on edge, had enough red herrings to throw me off as to who the killer was, but then the killer is slowly revealed about midway through. I will admit to be kinda disappointed at first, but then as I kept reading I realized that even though the identity of the killer is known, there are still some major twists tied in that absolutely blew me away…..and that ending..OMG it took my breath away!

While I did love the story, I am not sure if I ever liked any of the characters, but I also realize that maybe it is also the intention of the author to make the characters unlikeable. I just never really warmed up to Markie or her sister Kam. Although Markie does gets some points from me more towards the end. I just found Markie to be stuck up and judgemental and found myself rolling my eyes as she talked about people.

Oviatt’s writing is outstanding and creepy. She has a knack for drawing you into a scene, blood, guts, gore and all. Oviatt holds nothing back and writes an intense, mind blowing thriller/horror for fans that love a serial killer with an impressive body count. The intensity and the shock factor is real! I read many horror/thriller books, and love slasher flicks and even I felt a bit squeamish at times. Oviatt hits you hard with the shock factor and does not let go.

Aggravated Momentum is a shocking and twisting story that will thrill you and excite you and make you wonder just how messed up in the head you are to like this story so much! This story is definitely well worth the five stars I have given it.

Aggravated Momentum is definitely my kind of story. Suspenseful thrillers will always have a place in my heart and Didi Oviatt has written a really awesome one!

I absolutely loved the character building in this story. Didi Oviatt is clearly talented when creating characters who are intriguing and realistic. I loved how the situations they were put in revealed more about their personalities. I'm a sucker for books with fantastic characters, and this is probably why I loved Aggravated Momentum so much.

The twists and turns are pretty much endless in this story. There are lots of surprises I didn't see coming, and that is what I'm looking for when I read a novel like this. I highly recommend checking this one out!

I received a free review copy of ‘Aggravated Momentum’ by Didi Oviatt in return for an honest review. Okay, first things first, I loved this book. It took me on a real rollercoaster of emotions and the two twists caught me by complete surprise. The pacing of the story and the way certain key plot points are revealed to you make for an exhilarating and fast read.

‘Aggravated Momentum’ is an adult thriller, a ‘murder mystery’ type story that reminded me of ‘Dark Places’ by Gillian Flynn. It’s written from the POVs of multiple characters, including the killer. Markie, the protagonist, is still grieving the death of her best friend Beth, who was murdered a year ago. However when the killer strikes again, it becomes clear that they won’t stop until they’ve destroyed everyone close to Markie. To protect her family and those she loves, Markie must work together with the police to draw the killer out and figure out what they want before it’s too late. But why is she being targeted? And what other dark secrets does the killer have that will change Markie’s life forever?

Adult thriller isn’t my usual genre. I went into this book not knowing what to expect, and was very pleasantly surprised. Markie, the MC, is sharp, witty and independent. Though still obviously a bit traumatised by what happened to her friend Beth, she’s clearly a very capable and intelligent woman who knows how to stay calm during stressful situations. Though sometimes I found her a little cold and unfairly judgemental of the people around her, I liked that she wasn’t a perfect lovable MC. I think the point of this book is that none of the characters are good people, yet they’re intriguing enough that you want to learn more about them.

Markie’s younger sister Kam also plays a significant part in the story. Unlike Markie, she’s a bit more frivolous and doesn’t think before she speaks, which makes her seem insensitive a lot of the time. The dynamic between the two sisters is very realistic - though they both clearly have some big flaws, they still care about each other deeply, one of their redeeming qualities.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I think in many ways this book breaks down some of the tropes associated with the thriller/crime genre. I really liked the fact that the killer was revealed so soon and we got to read parts of the story from their POV - even though the big reveal happened early on there were still other surprises in store and I liked the dramatic irony. I found it unsettling to hear the killer’s thought processes; it gave me shivers and reminded me a lot of Clockwork Orange. Though I usually find books with multiple POVs confusing and overly complex, the pacing and the narrative structure here worked well since it all fit into one clear plot arc with a satisfyingly shocking conclusion.

If crime and thriller is your thing, I would highly recommend ‘Aggravated Momentum’ as an exciting, sexy and refreshingly original alternative to the usual staples of the genre.

Reviewed By Deborah Lloyd for Readers’ Favorite

Didi Oviatt, the author of Aggravated Momentum, developed a strong, fascinating cast of characters in this thrilling fictional work. Markie is a young single woman who has been greatly affected by the murder of her best friend, Beth. Her sister, Kam, is supportive, yet challenges her to end the grieving and get back into the world of nightclubbing and dating. As more tragedies occur in Markie’s life, the fear and complications continue to build into an unforgettable crescendo. Soon, it becomes virtually impossible for Markie to trust almost anyone; even her dreams become horrible nightmares. No place, nor any person, seems safe anymore. The enthralling intrigue builds; eventually, many secrets are revealed – and the complicated killer is identified.

A page-turning, enticing thriller keeps the reader guessing, and this novel does exactly that. Aggravated Momentum is an exciting adventure, full of unexpected twists and turns and unforeseen developments. Because the characters are so interesting, the reader is engaged from the first page to the last. Ms. Oviatt’s writing style is clear; scenes and characters are believable. The characters are convincingly portrayed, and one can visualize and hear the voice of each person in the story. There are some love scenes that are not too graphic and reveal the characters’ personalities. In other words, there is a purpose to the love scenes, not just as an addition for the sake of sensationalism. There is an authenticity to Ms. Oviatt’s writing that is refreshing to experience in a thriller-type novel.

I generally don't like first person present for books, but this one works. I'm a huge fan of thrillers and this one definitely sets a good pace. It had just enough violence in it without going over the top. I mean, you can't have a book about a serial killer without some kind of violence right?

One of the biggest things I didn't like was that after a while it starts to switch to different POVs. It would have made a bigger reveal of who the killer was and a few various twists if it hadn't jumped into their heads. Don't get me wrong, I love when you get to see the POV of the killer, I just think giving it away so soon might have taken away from the surprise.

I also think the prologue should have been about the death of Beth and not one of the various people way down the road. That's just my opinion though.

Overall I really enjoyed it. I was a quick, fast paced read that I was able to finish in about a day and two sittings. I normally don't talk about covers, but I have to give it up for this one because it's gorgeous.

I can't wait to see what come's out of this author's head next.

Put on your seatbelt and hold on tight because this novel is one hell of a roller coaster ride! There are more twists and turns I never saw coming.

As you can tell by the gorgeous cover, it is about murder -- a serial murderer at that. It has great pacing and once I started reading it, could not put it down. It was wonderfully unpredictable, I had to know what was going to happen next! Didi did an amazing job building suspense and giving just enough back story that you don't know who to trust.

The book is well written in Didi's unique style. The dialogue is realistic. Yes, people do use swear words. It is an adult thriller.

I love that the point of view changed several times during the story and the reader could get into the head of not only Markie, the main character but also her sister Kam, the killer and even the main character's mother. The reader gets to experience first hand what they are thinking (more surprises!) and discover their own dirty little secrets. And believe me, it seems that every character has them.

I am a big fan of thrillers and mysteries so I had to give this one a try. I'm glad I did because it was a great book. I don't usually like when books are told from multiple (more than 2) points of view but in some instances, like this one, it does help the story line.
The story line itself was great. The book draws you in from the very first few pages and there are no slow parts to let you get bored of reading. It keeps you interested and invested in what happens to the characters. When I got to the end, for some reason I felt like I (personally) needed more resolution to the story. I was wondering what really happened and wish there was some sort of epilogue to satisfy that for me. Other than that, I feel the story was well written and I would be more than happy to read more from Didi in the future! :)

I don't read that many thrillers, since I tend to find them rather formulaic. This book manages to build up great suspense and intrigue while creating an interesting bunch of characters. It reminds me a bit of the classic Scream / I know what you did last summer movies.
By using the first person to tell the story from the point of view of several of the characters, the author really manages to get inside their heads.
Fed up of the run of the mill thrillers churned out by some of the big names in the genre? Give this one a try, and you'll be hooked!

Book Author: Didi Oviatt
Genre: Thriller/ Suspense
Publisher: Creativia
Rating: 5 stars

Okay, so I’m not a fan of thrillers and the only author I read that writes thrillers is Didi so yeah she gets 5 dragon paws from me.

This is a fast-paced, suspenseful book with multiple point of views (all of them are different and perfect). Didi can create really ‘sick’ characters like when I was in the mind of the killer, I wanted to strangle him myself. He was such an ass but very believable.

The main character is Markie and she’s in the middle of it all. What I liked about her was that she was different from other main characters in other books. She felt real, confused, and just totally lost in the events and yet she was strong. Her sister… have a hate and love relationship… speaking of…

I already asked Didi through twitter to send me a prologue to both of her books. I expect it soon! 😉

I highly recommend this thriller for 18 and over. It has some triggers like rape and crazy thoughts so not for everyone.

this is a fast-paced thriller. Brutal and seemingly unrelated murders have one person in common, a young woman named Markie. She and her gorgeous sister Kam must contend with their diva mother who has dark secrets of her own. The killer is revealed fairly early on which was disappointing even though I identified who it was prior to the reveal. It is narrated from assorted povs including Markie, the sister, the mother and the killer. The first part is excellent but the second portion, though exciting is a bit melodramatic and unbelievable. Still fun and exciting read.

Thank you to R&R Book Tours for providing me with a copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book jumps right in with the murder in the prologue. I mean that was probably one of the best prologues I have read in a while and I was immediately hooked. I couldn't read it fast enough.

I loved this book. I had so many emotions while reading it ranging from feeling sorry, to being annoyed, anger, and hatred. It's written in multiple POVs which caught me off guard at first. The book starts out from Markie's POV and then it switched to the killers POV. That switch is actually when you find out who the killer is and I have to say I didn't see that one coming.

There are several characters in this book most of which I couldn't stand for one reason or another. I'm not going to get into details because I don't want to spoil anything but out of all of the main characters there was only one that I really liked and there's one that might be redeemable.

There are so many twists and turns that I never saw coming and that ending. OH MY GOSH!! How many times can I say I hate cliffhangers? Things are pretty much wrapped up but the way Didi ends things has left me with so many more questions. I really hope there is a sequel in the works for this one because I would really like some answers to said questions.

If you like fast paced thrillers that are chalk full of twists I highly recommend you read this one.

The first thing that impressed me about this book was the atmosphere. I found it chilling and creepy. The plot is engaging from the beginning; you are drawn in straight away, and the tension doesn’t drop half-way through as it does in a lot of thrillers. The intensity is carried throughout.
Markie, the main character, lives with her sister, Kam; they have a strange love/dislike relationship and they share feelings about their unfeeling mother – who’s a great character by the way. I enjoyed reading about her.
None of the characters is perfect; they all have their foibles and their secret thoughts; this is, of course, more realistic, and true to life for the reader. Generally, there’s the heroine and the hero, and you like them and want things to work out for them, but I didn’t feel like that about any of these people. However, I liked the huge FBI agent, Reese, very much indeed. I felt the sisters were safe when he was about.
There are many things about this book that I loved, like unusual little details about the killer. I also really liked the different POV chapters – I always love that in a book, and I could have done with larger chunks of it.
The dialogue is terrific; Here’s a little bit of it:
“Tiny beads of sweat grow in my hairline and on the tip of my nose. The walls of my office creep in closer, leaving me suffocated. I’m drowning in my own imagination.”
One of the most impressive things about the book is the shock element. There were moments when I actually gasped and put the book down to think about what had just happened!
I wonder if there will be another book about Markie and Kam; I would definitely read it with anticipation.
