I had a bit of a slow start getting into Haunted, because I'm a fan of urban fantasy but YA isn't usually my bag and my taste tends to run more towards elves and unicorns than wizards. That said, the book hooked me with Paige - one of our protagonists and our filter character for the majority of the work.
Paige is a busy teenager struggling to figure out who she is and what she wants. She's passionate and smart, funny, frequently in over her head and left asea in a wash of new emotional and social situations. Man did I identify with this girl. I felt for her while she handled the consequences of decisions that put her in the middle of sometimes temperamental strangers and a super dangerous situation.
There's a host of other compelling characters in Haunted, from wizard-in-training Jeremy (see: temperamental), still grieving his older brother and feeling more separated from his family by the day; Paige's buddy Eddie, descendant from a line of strong mediums and just discovering his sensitivity to the paranormal (and it's not all it's cracked up to be, trust me); and more. The story deepens and takes a dark turn as Paige, Jeremy and company try to contact the supernatural. About three quarters of the way through this book, I was burning through pages and staying up late just to figure out where it was going! The ending is satisfying and still leaves things open for more stories - which I'm looking forward to! Me, absolutely not a fan of YA fantasy lit.
If you enjoy YA fantasy, or you're a fan of shows like Supernatural and books like The Dresden Files, I recommend checking this one out.
