This was, for me, just okay. I really, really wanted to like this. Granted, I'm pretty new to cozy mysteries, but compared to what I have previously seen, this one just seemed to lack depth when I needed it. The events and details and certainly the emotions felt pretty superficial. There were opportunities in the narrative to build Ellie's world and her backstory that never happened. If this is a series (48 of them by the looks of it), seems to me that it didn't create the enticement to really invest in the characters.

I also did not find Ellie particularly sympathetic based on what I read. The story starts out with Ellie moving to the home town she had grown up in, but left in high school and hadn't returned to since. She hadn't been close to her grandfather and hadn't seen him in like 25 years when she gets conscripted to start running the family's pizzeria. She had no experience in restaurants and had been working in a sort of high paid financial sector job. Her reaction to starting to run the place seemed like a sense of family entitlement that cropped up instead of genuine interest.

I had also worked out who the killer was since there was really only one motive that made any sense and had a connection to the victim.

But it clipped along, too, which was good. It pleasantly surprised me that for such a short book, this managed to get the murder, some related events, and a solution to the mystery at an efficient pace.

I have been wanting to listen to this series for a long time.. Now is the time.

Ellie is back in her home town. She takes over the running of the family pizzeria. Then she finds a dead body. It all comes to a happy ending😆.

I would recommend this series and others by Patti Benning to readers of family and friends relationships adventure mystery novels. 2024

A really strong start to a tasty new series. Pretty much every time I thought I had something figured out, I was wrong. Seriously, it is twisty enough that I even guessed who the victim was going to be wrong. I do wish it had been a little longer since I would love to know a little more about the characters, but it did manage to pack a whole lot of plot into a fairly small amount of pages. Also – Ellie's Nonna is awesome. Seriously awesome.

Patti Benning is a new to me author. This is this first book in her Papa Pacelli Pizzeria series... and it won't be the last one I read!!!
Usually I am not too happy with shorter mysteries but this one I loved - yes, of course I wish we would get to know the cast better and the story would have had greater detail. But it worked still very well without. It was very good paced and not too hurried and abrupt as I find some of the shorter books. Highly recommended!

Pall Bearers and Pepperoni (Papa Pacelli's Pizzeria Series Book 1

I enjoyed this fast-paced mystery that had just enough twist and turns, dogs, birds and pizza to keep it interesting and leave you hungry for the next book in the series...and maybe a little of Papa's pizza, too.

Turning things around

A quick read and we'll written cozy mystery. Ellie has come home to stay with her Grandmother and restore her late Grandfather's pizzeria. A strong plot and developing characters that are sure to be seen in other books of the series.

Entertaining

Fun, light, and a quick read! Nice opening for a long series of books! I rarely read anymore due to miserable eyesight and usually listen to audiobooks so this was an entertaining little book!

It's highly unlikely that anyone that loves pizza and especially pepperoni pizza could pass by this title and to discover it's a series of 48 to date was all the more inviting to quickly begin reading. Eleanora (Ellie) Pacelli and her little dog named Bunny have returned to Kittiport, Maine after a long absence that initially was fueled years ago by Eleanora's parents' divorce. Now Eleanora has left Chicago far behind hoping to help her grandmother by taking over her grandfather's pizzeria that was his lifelong joy and in the process Eleanora may heal her wounds of both professional and personal nature.

Eleanora has the mixed anxiety of excitement of an opportunity for a fresh start and continuing her grandfather's legacy and the fear of not wanting to disappoint a beloved grandmother if she fails. Anyone that has had to start over can easily understand the swirl of these feelings particularly when loved ones will be affected by the measure of your success or failure. I was cheering for Eleanora from her first look at her grandfather's finances and her first day of return entering the employee entrance of the pizzeria. I loved the vitality of Eleanora's paternal grandmother, Ann Pacelli (also known as Nonna) and also the surprise resident of a macaw named Marlowe.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella cozy and look forward to reading more of the series! My only caution would be to advise not to read this cozy when you're hungry as between the menu offerings at the pizzeria and dinners served by Nonna at home it's difficult not to think about mouth-watering, delicious food.

Meet Eleanora Pacelli and her dog Bunny as they leave Chicago, a failed relationship and lost job to return to her hometown on the East Coast to help her Grandmother Ann run the family's pizzeria. Finding that that the business has become rundown and been losing money since her grandfather retired two years ago and turned things over to his manager, has Ellie scrambling to clean the place up and find where the money is going. After reconnecting with an old flame for a dinner date, Ellie is shocked to find him dead at the back door of the shop the next morning. I really enjoyed that Ellie is in her 40's and her grandmother is in her 80's but that doesn't stop either of them from doing what needs to be done. The characters are already well developed and interesting. The seaside setting and pizzeria background are well done. The murder plot has several surprising twists that will keep you turning the pages to find out the answers. This debut in a new series is a cozy mystery at its very best. Don't miss out on reading this from the very beginning.

I received this book from the publisher. This is my honest opinion and fair review.

This was s great book to introduce a mystery series.

Ellie (Eleanora) Pacelli, world recently swung upside down with the betrayal of her Fiancé and her loss of job in Chicago, Illinois. So, she heeds her Grandmother's request and goes up to Kittiport, ME to help with Grandpa's love of his career life...Papa Pacelli's Pizzeria. Grandma lives in a large Victorian home with Grandpa's Macaw, Marlowe. Ellie's pet is a tiny Papillion, named Bunny. This will be an adjustment for all.

Grandmother or Nonna, wants the Pizzeria restored to it's former glory. She hands everything over, including a boat, to Ellie, if she will just keep Papa's dream alive.

Ellie dives into the project. And, is shocked at the condition of the books, physical store, and employees. What has happened? However, Ellie is thrilled at reconnecting with her High School sweetheart Ben. This is short-lived as before their next date...Ellie discovers Ben's lifeless body at the back door of the Pizzeria.

This short story did very well at concealing the culprit and keeping suspense. I was impressed. I liked the ending as well since it leads into future tales. Very realistic. Give it a try!

Not long after her grandfather's unexpected death, Eleanora moves back to Kittiport, Maine after a disastrous ending to her engagement and her job in Chicago to take over the family's pizzeria. After reconnecting with Ben, a childhood sweetheart, Eleanora finds him dead behind the pizzeria. Under suspicion, Ellie knows it's up to her to find a killer.

I enjoyed this book, a novella length mystery and the first in the new series. The pizza descriptions made me drool (if I had to read about gooey cheese one more time, I was going to call Dominos!) and the characters were likable and interesting.

I thought the plot had a lot of promise, and it was really getting good when BAM! murderer is caught. The ending was so abrupt, it was like the author suddenly got tired of writing the story and plopped an ending in there. It didn't do the rest of the story justice and diminished my enjoyment.

Overall, a cute read but needs as much time taken on writing the ending as there was writing the rest of the book.

Great start to a new series

What a great start. Glosses over a few areas which needed more detail but having read other Patti Benning books I am sure this series will be a hit. Anyone for pizza?

I enjoyed this book immensely. It was easy to read, with good flow and uncomplicated character development. The story was not predictable and ended with a logical conclusion.

This is a quick mystery set in a pizzeria, and involving a woman who has inherited her grandfather's pizza place. This is a good start to a very promising series.

This was a nice start to a brand new Papa Pacelli's pizzeria mystery series that takes place on the East Coast. My favorite characters were Bunny the papillon and the main character's nonna. This is a grandmother that knows how to hold her own. I really like the Papa Pacelli's Pizzeria setting and enjoyed hearing about all the different ways Eleanora Pacelli wanted to improve sales with all her changes to the restaurant. I hope in later books we get to hear a lot about the town and her yummy pizza creations. This is a good mystery to sink your teeth into, especially if you love pizza, like me.

This book is the great start to a new series. I was immediately drawn in from page one. We meet Ellie as she returns to her hometown and her grandmother after her grandfather dies unexpectedly. Ellie intends to help her grandmother by working at the family pizzeria and then return to her life in the Midwest. Her plans quickly change.
I enjoyed Patti's Deli series, but I loved this book. I can't wait for book 2!

I enjoyed reading a different type of cozy, having never read one about a pizza shop. Eleanora Pacelli comes home after the death of her grandfather to take over running his pizzeria and to look after her Nonna. Things turn bad when she finds the dead body of an old friend outside the pizzeria. This is a great first book in this series.

Kindle Unlimited, used to cozies, and then to cut them slack, BUT...

in the blurb it says temporary move yet in the story it said more or less permanent one, says she is too upset to clean the one day yet she does the next {and the police never really check the pizza place for any evidence either}, then later the day after she talks about the murder while eating pizza one assumes heartbrokenly yeah whatever, one does not send out a neon sign for repairs not when it's just low neon it's just refilled on site and rarely moved because the tubes are fragile, one does not use 'harsh chemicals' to clean in an eating establishment as most of them are toxic if they get in to the food and/or leave too strong of a smell, and why would you have a manager/assistant manager whatever he was there as well as a delivery driver only yet on other days you had at least 2 other people scheduled {wait staff or whatever}, and you're so upset that someone would steal from 'your' family restaurant the one ran by your grandparents that you hadn't bothered to visit or call in years, and how would motion detectors and floodlights stop someone from breaking a window just the same as the time in the story, and with only 1 delivery driver plus grand reopening you would not repeat not have delivery that day only takeout, and never did answer the question of why it was taking hours to deliver pizza in that small of a town and it being cold by that time. By the way, coming up on someone who has been attacked/murdered then going for help and staying there while the helper goes to use a working cellphone while the murderer could still be around is beyond stupid. That's just the WRONG STUPID in the first book, no use detailing the 8 stupids in detail. They're all as bad, and will do with review what the 'writer' did with the books, copy/paste cookie cutter.

Each of these books are beyond stupid, as in stupid plots stupid situations stupid obvious solutions/killers, and no idea about how a food place works {hint, it's called research the book background}.Never could understand how a 'small town' seems to have unlimited number of residents, some thieves some murderers etcetera and people that all grew up together yet no one every suspected uh yeah. Also even for trying for standalone books in a series no one needs that much information about someone, over and over.

Short, cute story. The only thing that irked me was the stupidity she fostered on the Sheriff. Here is a girl who has not been back to his town since she was 16 - 25 years ago - having lived in Chicago all that time. She returns to her Grandmother's house and the next day to the pizzeria. Her high school sweetheart comes in, is surprised to see her asks her out for dinner that night to catch up on the years.. The next morning, he is found dead at the back door of the pizzeria. And, who is the first suspect that comes to the Sheriff's mind, Ellie. Then, when he finds out that Grandma has a gun, it only solidifies his suspicion of Ellie. Doesn't take the gun for comparison or anything, just makes a snap judgment. As Bugs Bunny would say "What a maroon". The lack of any motive in his mind is completely overlooked. Glad I don't live in that town.
Although the story was cute, the author would do herself a favor to put a little more logic and thought into her work.
But, it was cute enough that I will try another in this series.

Many Different Emotions

This book is quite hard to describe. It truly feels like a new author not being willing to trust her talents. There are a lit of things to like about the story, but i have one GIANT ELEPHANT-IN-THE-ROOM complaint. There was too little emotion in the main character after she finds out who the murdered person is, and then throughout the rest of the book. The tale is good; the culprit and the motive believable. But I really had problems dealing with the main character’s shallowness. However, i am looking forward to reading the next in the series. Dear Author, trust your talents! And let your characters be human enough to feel. Your readers deserve that.

I loved the idea of Ellie coming home to take over the family pizzeria and was so sure I knew who killed an old friend of hers. I wasn't too surprised to find out I was wrong, because the author has a good talent for surprises as I've come to find out from some of her other series.

I liked the primary characters a lot and how Ellie was turning the pizza shop around for both profit and better employee dispositions to the public. Ellie's nonna was such a neat lady, and even her grandpa's macaw was starting to warm up to Ellie by the end of the book. I've got a lot go to get caught up with this long-running series!

Ellie was visiting her grandma after 25 years. Her granny runs her recently deceased husband’s pizzeria, but the place was struggling big time. Ellie was going to try to save it.

On the day Ellie was planning to clean the place, she finds her old crush dead at the back entrance. Who could’ve done this?

A simple read. Most of the time, Ellie is trying re-acclimate to her hometown and her old friends while trying to get the pizza place back in shape. There wasn’t too much focus on the mystery.

An okay read.

I love a good cozy mystery. This one fits the bill. It’s a very quick cozy mystery. The story revolves around Ellie who moves in with her grandmother. Ellie had a bad few months with her fiancée cheating on her and she also lost her job the same week. Ellie moves in with her elderly grandmother and take over the family’s failing pizza restaurant. I read this book in a day very quick read and I’ve already downloaded the second book in the series.

beginning of a fun series

Ellie returns home from Chicago after breaking up with her fiancé and loosing her job. Her grandfather had recently died and the family pizzeria was in trouble. She no sooner starts trying to clean it up and turn it around when she finds a dead body on the pizzeria doorstep. The action picks up as she keeps trying to fix the pizzeria and looking out for her grandmother. A fun read and I look forward to reading more books in the series.
