Fast Lane

Rate this book
Oliver Blackwood is a world-class endurance racer… and he’s in a lot of trouble

At the peak of his career, having won two of out of the three legs of endurance racing’s most prestigious honor--the Triple Crown--Ollie has the world at his feet, immortality within his grasp, and the eye of every other gay man in England. That is, until he gets into a fight with his teammate and personal rival, Gary Fife. The fight lands Gary in the emergency room with a broken nose and Ollie in a police station.

His chance at redemption comes in the form of a rich idiot who wants to compete in a charity endurance race. Ollie’s manager makes it clear: he’s to train the newcomer, shake hands and make up with Gary, and ideally win the charity race for his team, or he’ll be sitting Le Mans out this year, and he’ll lose his best shot at the Crown.

Jack Blythe has also been living in the fast lane

After working from the age of sixteen in his own software company, at twenty-six, Jack thinks it’s high time he got to have a little fun. When the opportunity to go motor racing for charity comes up, he jumps at it--especially as it gives him the chance to meet Ollie Blackwood, gay icon of the moment. As a closeted gay man who’s never really had time for a relationship, the chance to get to know someone who’s out and successful like Ollie is too good to pass up.

The only obstacle in Jack’s way now is learning to drive a manual car. And figuring out how to woo a man whose world couldn’t be more different to his own.

With Ollie’s career at stake, Jack unsure about his future if he comes out, and Gary with a score to settle, winning the race--and each other’s hearts--is anything but simple. Can Ollie and Jack sort out what they want out of life before they part ways forever? Or will Gary’s distaste for his teammate lead to disaster?

Fast Lane is a stand-alone story of approximately 30,000 words, and does not end on a cliffhanger. It does, however, contain a thick Liverpool accent, explicit sex scenes, a lot of swearing, fast cars, pretty boys, and a happily ever after.

Sooooooo...
This book is set in Liverpool England, yet on page 2 the word favour is used. Yeah? So? I hear you say.
Well it's spelt 'favor' which is not how we spell that word in England.
We also have 'apologizing' and 'realize' I could go on and on.
It might seem a small thing but it pulled me out of the story before I'd even had a chance to settle in.
I don't understand why you wouldn't use the spelling of the country the book is set in, it makes a mockery of the whole setting otherwise.
It drove me absolutely bat shit crazy!
Its not even consistent because we have 'arse' used instead of 'ass'

It's such a shame because I actually quite liked the story. I mean, no angst, fast cars and hot men, what's not to like?!

I'm unsure really how to rate this one. Jack and Ollie were likable enough, but this story felt like it was missing a lot. I felt like I was missing background info on both characters half the time, which was frustrating. The story felt like it was missing a lot on top of the background. Chapter changes were the worst for me because I felt like I was fast forwarded too much into the story, and again, I was missing something. Except I wasn't, because it wasn't there.

Overall, it was ok and had a good ending. It just needed more.

As a person who grew up in the English dictate, it was hard flowing into American spelling. Until I found myself straddling the fence. I may have grown up writing realise, but today I sometimes end up writing realize. It is all interchangeable to me. If you spot my reviews, I am all over the place. So when a writer "misses", I cannot just blame that person. Some authors have betas from all over the world and editors can miss certain things. We are not all perfect. With that being said, let's get onto the review.

“I’ve got to teach a trust fund baby how to race a car?”

Assault and retribution. Ollie knew his temper would get him in trouble and lose his spot at Le Mans, the biggest race of his career. If he missed out this year, he’d lose his best shot at racing immortality. In order to redeem himself, he had to teach Jack Blythe, a multi-billionaire geek how to race effectively for his charity. Shy, as Ollie had expected, quick to blush and lower his eyes. But pretty with it, and otherwise put together all right.

Oliver was out and proud, and still successful.

A contradiction at best. Jack had admired the man and endeared to be like him. Not even owning a billion dollar company had given Jack that much confidence. He liked what he saw and hoped the time spent with Oliver would give him the courage to become the same. Their time together was hot, the chemistry they shared hotter.

“I don’t think I could live without you.” -- Ollie

Working with Jack became the highlight of his month with the man. Oliver soon found himself falling slowly for Jake. At some point after meeting him, Jack had become a conquest in Ollie’s mind. A project to work on, the end result of which would be sex. But as time went on, he soon found that Jack was it for him. How could he survive when Jack had to leave? It took a horrifying situation to bring these two closer and as they say, confession is good for the soul.

A one click read that will blow you away with an epilogue that is awe inspiring. My best Sean Ashcroft book ever (even if it's only book two, LOL)

This was funny, cute, sexy and a far more believable plot then what I was expecting. I loved how 'real' the characters were.

Oliver races cars for a living, after a rough life. Jack is a software titan who wants to have some fun so he signs up for a charity race car event. Oliver has to teach Jack to drive a race car. He does that and teaches Jack some other things in the process. I enjoyed this story.

Fun sweet sexy storey. Loved both Oliver and Jack. I would have liked to see a bit more of the charity work and how the two worked together.

I received this book free for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. Even though it was set near Liverpool I still read it like it was American as this is how the characters read in my head. That was a slight disappointment to me. But it didn't take anything away from the book at all.
This is the first book I have read with an endurance race driver as an MC and I really enjoyed this as a theme for the book. The book was more about the MCs than the car racing which I enjoyed. It fit the fast pace of the book being a short story rather than a full novel. If the book had been a full novel I would have liked more racing.
The relationship happened quickly but you saw it develop and strengthen. I think there was just enough back story of the MCs so you could see where they were from and what made them as they were.
I enjoyed the writing style and the book flowed really well. I liked the MCs even the bad boy of endurance racing was loveable from the start.
Can't wait for more books by this author.

Ollie, an out and proud gay man, and Jack, also gay but in the closet, meet when Jack is supposed to drive in a charity endurance race and Ollie is supposed to teach him how. Ollie is a professional race car driver, who got into an ill advised fight with a team mate and is now having to teach Jack to win the charity race for his team, make nice with Gary and keep himself out of trouble or he will not be allowed to race in the LeMans this year.
Jack is a young progidy who made his fortune in his software company and now wants to do something exciting and unusual. And since he has had fantasies about meeting Ollie, he is more than ready to learn...to drive...and anything else the racecar driver wants to teach him.
The author did a great job in crafting Ollie as a unique and quietly forceful character and Jack as a perfect foil. This story was reallly fun to read and I look forward to more from this author.

I really enjoyed the story of Ollie & Jack. Ollie is an endurance race car driver with a chequered past who is out & proud. Jack's not. Jack enters a charity race & begins lessons with Ollie. They both expect not to like each other but begin to develop a friendship despite themselves.

I really liked both of these men. The story was well written, had great flow & was easy to read. I was kept interested & entertained the whole way through.

I would happily recommend & look forward to more from his author.

Easy to read romance

This is very much a traditional romance, boy meets boy, boy likes boy, boy falls for boy, with nothing particularly new to excite.
However, I liked that it was set in the world of endurance motor racing, I liked the secondary characters and I liked the gentleness and lack of angsty drama.

I've just been reminded of one thing which annoyed me with this book. In the synopsis, it mentions a Liverpool accent but we never actually got one, and throughout the whole book, American spellings were used instead of English and we say arse not ass ;)

Jack and Ollie’s story is a sweet, fast paced romance. I loved the chemistry between them they were sweet, fun and hot together.
Overall an enjoyable book that's well written with enough background story to be interesting.
I will be looking for more book by this author.

Very Enjoyable Read.

As a pernicious reader who has turned her eagle eye to proofreading, I have to say how refreshing it is to read a book without errors. As a bonus, the story was fun and interesting. An enjoyable read and a great way to fill in a couple of hours of your time.

Sweet story

The characters are well developed. One has a good sense of who they are. Some of it was disjointed and clunky. It could've been me, but I had a time trying to follow the main race scene. A good story but not Sean's best.

Author should spend more time with his books and work more on the stories. Every book is very simple and plot is not developed.

The characters in this story are likable enough, but this sort of feels like a first draft. Ollie is a race car driver (although what sort is never actually explained...just "sports cars") who is openly out. That's a nice starting point, since professional athletes rarely are. He's also described as a bit of a live wire. He starts the story in jail for punching a teammate in the nose after the teammate used some sort of gay slur.

Jack Blythe is a computer genius from America (although he lived in England until he was 15) who buys some sort of charity experience to learn how to drive a race car and race at Le Mans. He ends up paired with Ollie, his celebrity crush. While Ollie is teaching him to drive, they fall for each other.

The story itself is fine, a nice, quick read, but if it is set in England, and both MCs are from England, they should sound like they are from England. There are a couple of mentions of cities in England, but aside from that, this story could be taking place in Topeka, Kansas. One of the secondary characters, Mickey, is the only one who sounds like he's from/in Great Britain. Jack gets to race in a celebrity race, and we are brought there and are with him when the race starts, but then the story jumps to after the race, and we never find out how he did. An ok enough read, but seems to miss out on some details or descriptions that could help make the story fuller.
